  • Fish Veterinarian Dr Loh shows you how to identify, treat and avoid white spot disease.
There are a number of ways to tackle white spot and Dr Loh explains the pros and cons of the various remedies. We also show you the difference between white spot and a common viral disease Lymphocystis which can sometimes be mistaken for white spot.
The formalin dosage we used for this particular aquarium was 0.0125ml/L. Before treating your animals please always consult a professional to ensure the medications and dosages used are suitable for your aquatic species and tank or pond setup.

The only reason dogs and cats and other land animals are less "complicated" is because they breathe air directly like us. Try keeping a human in a bubble underwater and you would have to change the air and purify the air just like you change the water and keep the water clean for fishes kept in a tank. In nature water takes care of itself.

Salt can be in a small dosis helpfull but not perse for white spot only. If your calcium is not to high there is no lose to use a small amount. But for myself i never used more then 3 grams on 100l so it wouldnt make that big of a difference. A salt bath is in no way efficient tho, especially compared with the methods mentioned in this video. Its just nice to know the ins and outs from it but its not a solution

these are excellent videos i enjoy them immensely .
if i can make one comment , could you superimpose the names of the diseases and medications on the screen , a lot of people can not understand the names because they are not familiar with them , when they are on the screen , you can pause and write it down to learn and use .
i noticed that the treatment is not always in the description .

Note that the "white spot disease" in fishes, are different from the "white spot disease" in crustacea. Those in fish are caused by a protozoa, and those in crustacea are caused by a virus. Fish can't catch the shrimp kind, and crustacea can't catch the fish kind. The crustacean white spot disease is a reportable disease in many countries.

Dear Dr Loh, My tank has Zebra Danios which can't go above 26°C. I have Zebra Loaches and Pristella Tetras which means I can't use aquarium salt or malachite green. Will formalin by itself be OK to use on my large tank? I also have Cherry Barbs, Platys (who are the white spot recipients), Guppies (three of which are new and probably brought it with them), Harlequin Rasboras, 2 Honey Dwarf Gouramis and a Golden Ram. Ammonia, nitrate and nitrite all at 0.

Come see my Discus being treated for Ich. High temps are supposed to protect Discus from getting Ich and yet here you can clearly see mine are covered with it. Do you think this Protozoa has become more heat tolerant? My community tank had two heaters and the temp was always a consistent 83 degrees. How did the Protozoa survive? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Formalin is recommended as a treatment for aquaponics and aquaculture. It's approved by the FDA. However, I'm confused by this. It's a fairly toxic substance and possible carcinagine. Does it fully break down in the environment after the withholding period? I've read that bacteria consume it but also that it should not be discharged into waterways.

I have loaches, so some chemicals are out.. and have read that raising temps is not advised with levamisole .. i am at 78F currently. I have aquarium salt and Kordon Ich Attach on hand .. can I use either with the levamisole in the tank ? I have been keeping these set of guppies for the past 2-3 years and never have I had any real complications. Today however, I went to feed them and saw one of my females resting in the corner of the tank and only swimming near the bottom. She has little white spots on her back (about five spots) and will lie on her side and is showing no interest in her food. I have quarentined her but am unsure of what to do to help her. She's being kinda sluggish instead of her usual energetic personality. I would appreciate any help as I am still not sure it is ich.

I have four fish tanks. The reason I’m here is because I saw my newest fish rubbing itself on the decor in the tank. But I did know that that could mean external parasites. I don’t have an extra tank for quarantine, so I put him directly in the tank when I got him. I regret it. Now I have two sick goldies. Luckily, I noticed before it became severe, and I could barely see the spots on them.

As for the light, do you mean whenever the tank is on? Or to do my best to replicate the hours of sundown and sunrise to trigger night time envirornment for the protozoan to come out? The reason i ask is my tank is in my living room and although i do have sun blocking curtains, minimal sunlight still comes through, or is that amount of light negligible? Or is it inconsequential since i need to replicate sunrise and sundown with my tank lights? Im at 1048 in the video and i wish i could have asked that question live shortly ago. It seems when they swarm at sundown its key to its effectivness. You just stated that after medicating turn the light off.. im wondering if that means for the duration of those 3 to 4 treatment cycles or just implying after each treatment.

I have a tank that is ick contaminated from a dead fish cause by whitespot... now I have changed the water 2 days when the fish died. now I bought a new fish to be place on the same tank. now I put the new fish on the tank and day after, it started to show symptoms like gliding his fin on the bottom glass. my plan is to transfer the fish on the new tank with a conditioned water (just provided after when the new fish shows symptoms of ick.
The new tank was conditioned of
    Mety blue
    anti chroline
    rocksalt.
    1 day water stock.
is it okay to transfer it while on treatment from the old tank into new tank?

    Good day Fish Doctor
I added a baby fish to my community tank and the little guy seems to have now picked up ich.
I do not want to add any chemicals to the tank so am I right in increasing temperature to 30 degrees and this will help prevent ich from spreading as none of my other fish have any symptoms? Looking forward to receiving your feedback

I am treating a wild caught Texas cichlid in quarantine. For some reason these Texas cichlids stress from catch transport to aquarium and start to get large cottony white growth on fins and scales. I think it is Fungus and I have been giving him methalyne blue dips and using melafix for 4 days now and it is starting to go away am i treating this right?

Can't you use Copper as well?
