FINALLY! Someone who breaks down the amounts and proportions clearly. That's all I've been trying to find! Thank you so much and I wish I had found your video first. That would have saved me hours of frustration.
I used these measurements for my adult red tailed shark who was floating at the top of the tank, I believed it to be swim bladder I must say THANKS for the advice a day later he is back to normal. GREAT ADVICE
For anyone watching unsure of what to do, I felt the same way. I tried using the Epsom salt bath though, and so far I can say it worked well. Its a pretty inexpensive treatment compared to medicine. I pretty much did the 1 tablespoon (I only have one-half teaspoon measurements, so 6 of those) and probably went a little under. I mixed it well with a quarter of the water, then again at half, and finally at full. After that I left my 2 corydoras in there for 10 minutes freaking out every time they stopped moving for too long. I put them in a breeder pen in their normal tank for the night, and in the morning they were very happy. I used it because they kept floating to the surface. Their symptoms only showed up a few hours before I gave them the bath. I am still monitoring them to see if it happens again. This comment isn't to act like the video doesn't have good information. Everything I did was based off of the video and adjusted for the size of my tank (10 gallons). I just wanted to post good results and a little story because I know I was nervous and scared trying it for the first time yesterday. Just be confident and if you don't have precise measurements, it wont harm them if you put a little less like if would if you put too much. Good luck to you all and thanks for the video.
@Maria Diep I don't think you should. It also depends on the size of your tank and why you're using it. The best method to use is giving them a salt bath that way they're only exposed to it for a short period of time and then they can relax in their normal habitat. I checked some online sources and some of them agree that you should avoid putting 1/8 of a tablespoon (a teaspoon is 1/3) for every 5 gallons. If you have a 10 gallon tank then 2 teaspoon could pass but you should do a water change after a few hours and then another one the next day. Too much exposure can lead to other issues like irritation. This is why it's better to have a bath in a separate bowl or have a separate "hospital tank" because you really don't want to overexpose them to these types of things. Make sure you monitor your water parameters regularly when you are making changes to your tank. If you already added the salt then I'd suggest getting a few tests done then changing the water just in case. The fish won't show signs of sickness until they're too sick.

@@carolgurley8354 you can do it once or twice a day, but make sure to monitor her and make sure she isn’t too stressed. Personally I would only do it once a day. 2 treatments was enough for my corydoras, but if you need to do more then that is fine.

1/8 of a teaspoon per 5gallons So 1/4 of a teaspoon per 10gallons For long term passive treatment 1 tablespoon per gallon (in a separate tank) for 10 minutes for aggressive treatment.
@@jasminebegay2380 long term passive is 1/4 tsp every 10 gals. I did mine with water changes as salt doesn’t evaporate, the only way to get rid of it is to do a water change. So you don’t want to add more until you do at-least a 25% water change. (I did water changes weekly but mine wasn’t for dropsy it was for constipation and ich treatment and it worked great)
That's was such an awesome informative, detailed , clear video. I loved the fact that you mentioned the dosage in grams and as well as spoon measures. That's very thoughtful I must say ! Cheers to you and happy fish keeping .
I haven't seen anyone ask this question yet so I was wondering if one bath is all you should do and how long before I should expect a difference for popeye from trauma? After a couple days if I don't see improvement should I do another bath or just stop because there was no improvement?
I think Epsom salt increases tank PH, so just be careful if adding it to the tank itself on the lower dose method. Also, I think people need to know they must use Food Grade Epsom salt. Hope I got that right!
1 tablespoon is defined as 3 teaspoons. So your plastic measures might be slightly off, but not so much that it is a major impact. For myself, I just assume 1tsp = 5g and 1tbsp = 15g.
How long after you do the quick bath treatment and put it back in the tank, should you wait to see any difference? And what do you do after that, treat it again? Thank you.
I recently used Epsom salt on my betta fish, he is lethargic and I believe he has some fin rot ( my husband bought some treatment for this today). Hope this helped my beta fish yesterday! 🙏
Not sure if you were videoing with a mobile phone but if so that will be what's causing your scales to waver. Keep the phone further away and use zoom or use another form of device for videoing when using scales, they are sensitive to the signals the phone gives out evenwiththe phone not on a call. Put your phone near the scales with them switched on, go to make a call and see what happens!
I use half a cup of Epsom Salts in the fish tank. (6ft tank 570 litres) For a individual fish bath. (30 litre bucket) a third of a cup, aerator in the water and heater. And 30 minutes. On a count down timer.
Thank you so much for your video. My veil tail swordtail female is acting paralyzed from the tail. Can't really swim up to the surface so I am adopting your dosage and bathing her in one hour or so. I hope I am not too late.
I f folks would just use litres, then we'd all be on the same page. And as for the U.S. version of that most noble measure, The Pint......dear , oh dear ! I have tried a bath at 3-ish tablespoons per - real - gallon for one hour and I 'm about to re-do this for my Angel . who isn't eating, but otherwise acting fine, even lunging at food, just stopping short of eating it. He/she ate like a trooper until recently , and has a little pot belly now. I would treat the tank , but have Kuhlis , so still a bit unsure wheter Epsoms would harm them , being scaleless . Again , lots of inconclusive info out there on this.. The video gives clear guidance on dosage , beyond doubt , good work !
Would be good to mention that there is epsom salt and epsom salt, one is food grade and the one which should be used, the other is for bath only and should not be taken as the fish tKes it inside the body with the water through the gills.
Very helpful video. I placed my fish in the epsom bath for 5 mins. I then placed him back in the tank. He looks very stressed. Breathing very quickly, laying on the bottom of the tank. What should I do next?
1 tbsp/gallon is what I used for the bath. Just tried it last night for unintentional floating, and I'd say it turned out well so far. Going to keep monitoring them for a few days though.
this is a great break down of how much to use. i had a question though. If you are going to treat the whole tank how often do you have to add the Epson Salt.
Thank you! I have been trying to find out how much and how long to cure my female bettas. they are bloated and I was so worried. I really appreciate this video.
@@leledolphin They can become what's call "egg-bound." But that is very rare and is usually not going to kill your female betta. If they can't or don't lay their eggs, they typically absorb them back into their bodies.
Very well spoken and informative, makes easy listening and easy to take on the advice. My Oranda loves to eat but the last 2 days has not been eating, nor has he pooped. Just got him into a hospital tank with 2 teaspoons per 5 litres. Let’s see if he 💩s. Thanks
@Everyday Aquarist, thank you very much for the video. It cured my Goldfish yuan bao and short tail ryukin. I put them in the hospital tank of 5 litres + 25 grams of Epsom Salt for 10 minutes. I have added 5 grams into 162 litres aquarium tank. Is this enough? When I do weekly change water of 30% - 40%, how many grams of Epsom Salt shall I add in ? Please advise. Thank you.
Mine are only modestly constipated (new tank, more fish and overestimated the feeding!) and will do the 1/8 per 5USG alongside peas and broccoli. I regard the bath thing as a last resort tactic.
I know this is an old video but I am just finding it my question is will this hurt my plants if I dose in the main tank to avoid stressing the fish that needs the help? Thank you for this video it has been very helpful

My koi developed a bloated tummy just this week, noticed it within a couple days. I followed this yesterday and again just now. No change yet, I didn't feed today, not noticing any poo from him, but noticing that the bloat is larger on the right side. No signs of injury, normal coloring, eyes not bulging, scales not really sticking up, but on the right side, I can see where they would if it gets any worse. Super worried, how many times can I do this bath and is there anything else I can do? I'm worried about my scaley kid. Help?
Hi there thanks for nice video. I have discus fish and they look ok , but I want to use Epsom salt along with preis coly as protection is that ok, and how much do I use for 240 L tank .thank you
Your scales are playing around because you're recording on your phone so the signal from your phone makes them play around. I've got the same scales and my phone near them does the same thing
Can I ask please, I have put a carefully measured amount into my aquarium as I don't want to remove the fish. Is that the only dose I can put in or can I add more later? Or, if it is going to help does it only need one dose? Thanks
Thinking ... For US 10 gallons of water use 1/4 teaspoon of Epson Salt. For small concentrate solution about (300ml) for 10-15 minutes bathing and adding to aquarium. 1/4 teaspoon Epson Salt bath 1 US gallon = 3785.45 : 3 : 4 = 315.45 ml. (1 Tbs = 3 Tsp, so divide by 3, then divide by 4 (1/4 tsp). After bathing return fish and solution to aquarium.
I almost kill my fish, because I put one tea spoon to about 300 ml water and put my fish on it as he looked dropsy, luckly I saw your video and take him out in 5 mins, he's safe by the way
Great video! I was having trouble finding the correct dosage. I moved my two afflicted fish into a quarantine tank, as the swelling is not incredibly advanced just yet - would I better off with giving baths or the in-tank treatment?
Hi! I’m trying to figure out if my fish has dropsy or is just bloated. I’ve given him two epsom salt baths once a week for the last two weeks. How long should I keep giving him epsom salt baths till I’m supposed to see a difference? Trying to figure out how long I should go before I move onto medicine.
May be too late but I just used 1 tbspn in 1.8 litres for 10 min and placed back in the pond.. Haven't seen it come up and float yet. Will repeat if I see it floating again.
I have a small goldfish that’s 10 years old. It bloats after eating and looks miserable. After about 12 hours +/- it no longer is bloated. Is there a special food I can feed it to eliminate what appears to be extreme gas from the food. Thanks...
This is not a good idea depending on the symptoms of the fish if the fish is some furring from buoyancy issues the aquarium salt will not help and we make it worse because aquarium salt helps fish keep moisture in and Epsom salt helps them relieve some moisture and the constipation they kind of fight against each other if used at the same time
Hi... So OK I followed this video because it relates to my exact same problem, my goldfish has Dropsy-bloated-pineconing... I gave him a 'Short Term Bath' following your instructions..the question is "is that it?".... what about any more baths / treatments, and how long for? the treatment?...Other treatment vids on here are saying 2 weeks, 8 days, 2 days etc. Can you advise more on this please. Thanks
I added a 1/16 teaspoon to my 2.5 gallon fish take for my Beta fish who seems verrrry uncomfortable. I can't get him to eat peas and I feel he's not going to make it. How long after adding the Epsom salt to his tank would it be for him to be different if it's going to work?
Just to the Math, do you have a 26 1/2 gallon tank which means if you are going to treat your whole tank 26.5 tablespoons if teaspoons are like he said about 5 g 26×5 130 g of salt
I have a green spotted puffer, i beleive hes swallowed a peice of a shell or a rock, he still eats, not as much and swims around. would this help him releive what ever is stuck inside of him.
I have a roughly 6-8 inch comet goldfish with dropsy in a 10k+ gallon pond. None of the other 40 or so fish in there have any problems but this one has dropsy. It has bloated slowly over several months, i originally thought it was eggs until the scales started to pinecone. I do not believe the problem is anything other than bad genetics because it's a comet based on none of the other fish being affected for several months. But I want to relieve the bloating with salt. Once I remove him from the pond and put him in a quarantine tank what kind and how much salt should I use to suck the water out that is swelling him?
I have a new guppy in my 5g quarantine tank and used 1/8 tsp to help with some bloating, think where I got her from might have overfed her. But wondered if you could use any meds with the epsom salt or should you wait until the salt is cleared from the tank. I wanna use paraguard on her before i transfer her to my 10g guppy display tank?
Adding too much salt can kill the good bacteria. It just depends on how much you end up adding. I added half a teaspoon into my fish tank yesterday (using the 1/8 teaspoon per 5 gallons rule) and the parameters seem to be a little off but overall normal. The main reason my ammonia is about 0.25 is because I added 4 new corydoras over the past few days.
It is very confusing. I have found if I just use a lil bit in a betta keeper the .7 to a gallon. I use a spoon that came with some live powdered bacteria I bought a bit ago to measure alot of meds with it. I have also found that the recommended dose of freshwater Aquarium salt is harmful to alot of fish. This spoon measurs ruffly a ¹/16 of a teas spoon. It workers great for me. I did find this educational thank you. I have a sick betta idk why and he looks like he hurts all over. He is sitting in medicated water with a bit of this salt. I was thinking of a bath for him just not sure the dose to use
My betta has dropsy...she is in a 3.5 gallon tank. Is 1/4 of teaspoon too much? I feel so bad, she is really bloated and there wasn't anyplace in my small town that had fish antibiotics. I can see tomorrow if the local pet shop has any but they were closed when I got home and discovered she was in bad shape.

1 tablespoon per gallon (in a separate tank) for 10 minutes for aggressive treatment.
for a passive treatment how often do I put the salt in. I have 2 tetras that's have dropsy for sure and 3 others that might be in early stages. 😢
@@jasminebegay2380 long term passive is 1/4 tsp every 10 gals. I did mine with water changes as salt doesn’t evaporate, the only way to get rid of it is to do a water change. So you don’t want to add more until you do at-least a 25% water change. (I did water changes weekly but mine wasn’t for dropsy it was for constipation and ich treatment and it worked great)
Ty
That's was such an awesome informative, detailed , clear video.
I loved the fact that you mentioned the dosage in grams and as well as spoon measures. That's very thoughtful I must say !
Cheers to you and happy fish keeping .
How long until you know if it works for dropsy? Re; when will the bloating go down? Thanks
Can I add the epsom salt to the tank as a passive treatment as well as the 10 minute bath? Or is that too much too soon?
i was wondering the same thing..i hope they answer
Yes. Been doing it for years with many fish.
In many cases adding the the tank alone will work and bath isn't needed but for severe cases I always do bath first
I haven't seen anyone ask this question yet so I was wondering if one bath is all you should do and how long before I should expect a difference for popeye from trauma? After a couple days if I don't see improvement should I do another bath or just stop because there was no improvement?
Wondering this myself
I think Epsom salt increases tank PH, so just be careful if adding it to the tank itself on the lower dose method.
Also, I think people need to know they must use Food Grade Epsom salt.
Hope I got that right!
why would people use gallon and tablespoon
Liter and gram are more precise
1 tablespoon is defined as 3 teaspoons. So your plastic measures might be slightly off, but not so much that it is a major impact. For myself, I just assume 1tsp = 5g and 1tbsp = 15g.
How long after you do the quick bath treatment and put it back in the tank, should you wait to see any difference? And what do you do after that, treat it again? Thank you.
This is years too late for some fish victims of dropsey. But good thing there is a cure now! 😊
I recently used Epsom salt on my betta fish, he is lethargic and I believe he has some fin rot ( my husband bought some treatment for this today). Hope this helped my beta fish yesterday! 🙏
Bathed my Goldfish twice and what a difference bravo Sir what a result 😀
Peter Madden I’m glad you had success. Did you bathe once a day for two consecutive days, you said you bathed twice?
Works for humans, too! Read the package! 😎
Im mostly scared that im using the wrong kind of salt but this helped me out
Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate
Do you know if dr teals is ok
@@Crash_Tv. its fine as long as it doesn't have any fragrances and is 100% natural.
(6ft tank 570 litres)
For a individual fish bath. (30 litre bucket) a third of a cup, aerator in the water and heater. And 30 minutes. On a count down timer.
Doesn't really help the fish in any way. The fish without swim bladder problems poop easily (within 2 to 5 minutes)
Did he get better? Did his stress go awa too?
that means your fish is very stressed you should lower the dosage of epsom salt
I’ve seen people say 1 TBSP/gallon,,, glad I found this!
1 tbsp/gallon is what I used for the bath. Just tried it last night for unintentional floating, and I'd say it turned out well so far. Going to keep monitoring them for a few days though.
1 tablespoon per gallon of AQUARIUM SALT not Epsom salt. 1 TEASPOON per gal. of Epsom salt for the bath.
Just what I needed. Thank You!
this is a great break down of how much to use. i had a question though. If you are going to treat the whole tank how often do you have to add the Epson Salt.
How often can I give my molly a epsom salt bath? I have her one today and notice a difference in her color already.
Clear and well founded presentation ...
Thank you! I have been trying to find out how much and how long to cure my female bettas. they are bloated and I was so worried. I really appreciate this video.
Hi did it work for you? Im trying to get my female betta to lay her eggs because I am not breeding her.
My girls fasted for 2 days and bloat went away. They still eat everything in sight. I haven't tried it yet. But I'm glad my girls didn't need it yet.
@@jenxu2 i really just need her to lay her eggs without the help of the male. I heard they die when they dont get to lay their eggs😔
@@leledolphin I have not heard that.
Thanks
My cichlid is doing it now got him in a hospital tank... did this work for your fish?
How often can you give a betta an epsom salt bath?
@Everyday Aquarist, thank you very much for the video. It cured my Goldfish yuan bao and short tail ryukin. I put them in the hospital tank of 5 litres + 25 grams of Epsom Salt for 10 minutes. I have added 5 grams into 162 litres aquarium tank. Is this enough? When I do weekly change water of 30% - 40%, how many grams of Epsom Salt shall I add in ? Please advise. Thank you.
TY for video! How often can you the the epsom bath for a fish ?
What would be helpful is to give us the conversion of US gallons to litres. Great having the conversion from spoons to grams.
question here. when using epsom salt in a hospital tank with other medication, do you do waterchange on next dose or just add salt daily?
Mine are only modestly constipated (new tank, more fish and overestimated the feeding!) and will do the 1/8 per 5USG alongside peas and broccoli.
I regard the bath thing as a last resort tactic.
thank you for crunching the numbers for us all.
Oh god I am really scared my fish stopped eating two days ago and his chest is inflated I don't know how much longer he will survive
Tacomaster2006 did it die?
Well?
I know this is an old video but I am just finding it my question is will this hurt my plants if I dose in the main tank to avoid stressing the fish that needs the help? Thank you for this video it has been very helpful
Good video that finally explains it!!
Your video was very informative and helpful to all of us with sick fish. It’s hard to know what is the best advice out there so thank you.
However, could you please take the time to answer people’s questions about their fish in the comments? It will not only help the person and possibly save their fish but help countless other people trying treat their ill fish. Thank you.
How often should the process be repeated( .65 for ever 5 gallons)
I have a question.....if I use the bath method in a bucket of 1 gallon of tank water to 1 tbsp of Epsom salts, how often should I use this method to ensure they get better? Is it a one time treatment?
It worked within a second.❤️ Thank you
Great video of a jar of epson salts
How frequently should the treatment be given
My koi developed a bloated tummy just this week, noticed it within a couple days.
This was super helpful!! Thank you!!!
Nice video! So how many times do I dose the whole tank?.
Epsom salt bath for 10 mins
1 tbspn per us gallon
17.5 grams to 3.75litres
Can I ask please, I have put a carefully measured amount into my aquarium as I don't want to remove the fish. Is that the only dose I can put in or can I add more later? Or, if it is going to help does it only need one dose? Thanks
Great clarity in the instruction , Thanks
Thinking ...
For US 10 gallons of water use
1/4 teaspoon of Epson Salt.
For small concentrate solution about
(300ml) for 10-15 minutes bathing
and adding to aquarium.
1/4 teaspoon Epson Salt bath
1 US gallon = 3785.45 : 3 : 4 = 315.45 ml.
(1 Tbs = 3 Tsp, so divide by 3,
then divide by 4 (1/4 tsp).
After bathing return fish and
solution to aquarium.
❤ I needed this confirmation at this time. Thank you from me and Meep, my lionhead oranda in the pic ↩
Great redo and great info!
Epson salt is also used to kill black beard algae in pools. I wonder if it is possible to use it to kill black algae in aquariums?
I almost kill my fish, because I put one tea spoon to about 300 ml water and put my fish on it as he looked dropsy, luckly I saw your video and take him out in 5 mins, he's safe by the way
Depends on the material you take in the spoon, it gives the volume but different compounds have different weight for same volume.
Great video! I was having trouble finding the correct dosage. I moved my two afflicted fish into a quarantine tank, as the swelling is not incredibly advanced just yet - would I better off with giving baths or the in-tank treatment?
Can i use epsom a salt solution several time which has already been used for bath?
Hi! I’m trying to figure out if my fish has dropsy or is just bloated. I’ve given him two epsom salt baths once a week for the last two weeks. How long should I keep giving him epsom salt baths till I’m supposed to see a difference? Trying to figure out how long I should go before I move onto medicine.
hi .. how much added in 1 ltr. i have 20-25 ltr tank. so how much i can add. do i keep in that epsom salt added water so long./pls reply
May be too late but I just used 1 tbspn in 1.8 litres for 10 min and placed back in the pond.. Haven't seen it come up and float yet. Will repeat if I see it floating again.
PLEASE HELP.
Can I return my goldfish directly back into the main tank after a salt bath?
Thank you so much for your help.
Yes you can
My krib is bloated and I put it in a small container and added salt hopefully it will recover 😔
How much is the dosage per liter?
How often do you treat the whole tank?
I have a small goldfish that’s 10 years old. It bloats after eating and looks miserable. After about 12 hours +/- it no longer is bloated. Is there a special food I can feed it to eliminate what appears to be extreme gas from the food. Thanks...
can i use epsom and aquarium salt in the hospital tank together?
Following. Same issue
If it is constipation it should be fairly fast acting. For dropsy it will be gradual, however not all dropsy will respond to this treatment
Hi Sir... pls advice me how many gram of Epsom Salt to put to 100litre aquarium water? tq
I have a bag of Epson salt that can be use for a bath or treating human constipation can I use that for the fish
I have a new guppy in my 5g quarantine tank and used 1/8 tsp to help with some bloating, think where I got her from might have overfed her. But wondered if you could use any meds with the epsom salt or should you wait until the salt is cleared from the tank. I wanna use paraguard on her before i transfer her to my 10g guppy display tank?
would it not be better to convert to litres than us gals
should i take my filter out? will it filter out the salt or will the salt stay in tank?
It won’t effect your filter. The only way to get rid of the salt is by doing water changes.
INFINIITY Thank you
Adding too much salt can kill the good bacteria.
If the betta is living in the .7 gallon, that’s your problem.
Just take a. Small pinch and put it in. U can vac it out the next day. And please get your fish a bigger tank
I tried this technique for my platy, she still is nose down tail up, do I give her a salt bath every day? also is it best to miss out a days feed?
My betta has dropsy...she is in a 3.5 gallon tank. Is 1/4 of teaspoon too much? I feel so bad, she is really bloated and there wasn't anyplace in my small town that had fish antibiotics. I can see tomorrow if the local pet shop has any but they were closed when I got home and discovered she was in bad shape.
Did the treatment work?
Can we add epsom salt in planted tank
How about if you have live plants, in a 76 gallon tank
