- Dropsy is a clinical sign indicating loss of fluid balance where there is a net influx of water. This is most commonly due to damage to kidney, gills and skin, from a variety of infectious and non-infectious causes. The prognosis for survival is poor.
In this video Dr Loh visits a pond where the owner is experiencing loss of fish that are developing bloated bodies. Dr Loh examines one of the goldfish showing signs of dropsy to see what is causing the problem
To reach a diagnosis we do a full water quality analysis and microscopic examination of skin mucus scrapes and gill biopsies to exclude any underlying disease issues (e.g. ectoparasites). We also perform blood tests and bacterial cultures to help with making a diagnosis. These findings are essential to formulate a treatment regimen to prevent the problem occurring in the remaining fish population.

For people up-in-arms about euthanising the fish: Dropsy is severe and difficult to treat, and the fish would never be 100% again. When the scales stick out it's late stage Dropsy, aka organ failure, euthanasia is the humane thing. It would have died a slow, painful death otherwise, it would have already been in agony.
Also seeing people getting all riled up saying it was still alive. It wasn't. The fins moved because of nerves. To the "the heart was still beating" guy: a beating heart does not equal life, brain activity does. The fish is truly dead.

Oh my gosh, I'm impressed as well! When I was 10 years old, I knew I wanted to be a vet, but I wasn't sure what I would specialize in - if anything. I didn't discover a love for aquatic critters until I was a senior in college! Still planning to apply to vet school some day, but until then maybe I can find work with zebra danios in a lab or something. I have a lot of basic husbandry knowledge to catch up on with this hobby. I lost a koi fish today to dropsy... I did what I could with stuff I had but I felt absolutely useless. It was at a similar stage so I feel a bit better knowing I couldn't do much more for the poor guy. Thank you

One of my guppies had that, i tried to help the fish with meds and keep the water as clean as I can. The fish is now healthy and is doing well.

i think youtube knew i was having a dropsy problem in one of my tanks and brought this video to my attention.
I’ve had a goldfish that was showing dropsy signs and had the pine cone appearance. The fish was still active and eating (though not as active) I gave supportive care with melafix and fast then gave peas... turned out it was a genetic issue and with grounded up food and more fiber diet, the fish swelling went down and was happily swimming with her tankmates again

@@maurajayne2717 I think my post was pretty clear what I did. Basically I think grounding up the food helped the most along with melafix and peas. I still have her and she’s bigger so I no longer have to ground up her food and she’s doing well.
Dropsy make me panic.... I check all my fish multiple times a day at different angles because I'm so paranoid. I've lost 2 fish to dropsy

My betta died from dropsy a few days ago :/ it was really weird because he would get bloated, so I separated him off and I came back from a 1 day field trip and his stomach went down but the whole time I've owned him I've never seen him poop

Not so hot for the fish, either...
Although we know she is not completely out of the woods yet, it appears that our very bloated pond goldfish (whose symptoms included bloated, scales sticking out/ protruding (pine cone effect), bulging eyes, black smudges on her fins and tail, stringy white poop, isolating from other fish) is on her way to a full recovery. We purchased a 10 gallon fish tank, filled it with the pond water, warmed it to 78 degrees, then added 1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt (to decrease bloating)-- everything I read said to only use "epsom" b/c other types of salts could cause her to retain even more fluid, plus 1 teaspoon of melafix (to heal black smudges/areas)........then added a combo of kanaplex and metroplex to the water (to treat either the bacterial infection or parasites that may be causing her illness)...once the water was all ready for her, we transferred her carefully from the pond to the tank. Over the next 7 days, she got better each day. We saw a huge decrease in the bloating by the 2nd day. We didn't feed her for the 1st 2 days to be safe until some of the bloating went away, but then started giving her a few pre-soaked food pellets each day (and a shelled pea here and there). We also checked the water several times a day to be sure it was clean and safe (testing for ammonia, nitrates, ph, etc). After one week, all symptoms are gone! She is back in the pond with her friends looking fantastic! Her scales went down, she is no longer bloated and her poop is back to looking normal. We are hopeful the kidneys repaired themselves and all is well .

This is exactly why no fish should be put down... a reverse can happen with the right treatment.... I have seen plenty of youtube videos that the fish did get better with treatment from dropsy symptom. This pond had multiple sick fish with dropsy which is only common sense it’s not generic. Being all the fish are not related it was clearly a disease that started from organisms. The kidneys may of recovered if at least tried to treat. As the doctor said there was new kidney growth trying to recover the kidneys. I don’t think the fish in this video should of been put down, I think it should of been treated and at least tried to nurse it back to health, just my opinion.
Just because 1 out of a 100 fish with dropsy can be saved doesn't mean it's humane to try and save all of them, regardless of your good intentions. All your doing is causing unnecessary suffering.
OK Ed next time you get sick with something that maybe treatable your wishes are to be euthanize. right? so you are not unnecessary suffering. Right? or No? You want to be saved and try to get better, right? Thats what you're saying about fish that have ONLY a symptom of Dropsy. By the way Dropsy is only one symptom of what could be many diseases that are NOT fatal and can be cured, kidneys can heal! Lets face it some fish keeps don’t want to bother trying to help the fish and would rather kill it and make up excuses just to get rid of the problem..I also find it funny when people think they know if a fish is suffering or not. Do you people know that living beings do everything they can to STAY ALIVE even when sick or being hunted. There is a time when animals are on their death bed and need to be put down because they are no longer fighting to survive but the symptom of Dropsy is not one of them. Fish with Dropsy are still swimming and eating and has a chance to get better with the right medicine. I read people are giving the WRONG antibiotic gram positive which will not work. it needs gram negative to cure it, Dropsy is caused by gram negative bacteria. If that fish stops eating and just lays on the bottom of the tank and you did everything you could to help that fish THEN it’s time to help it’s journey along, other then that YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO KILL THE FISH until you have tried everything and if that fish is on it’s death bed or not. There are 100’s of videos and information on how to cure Dropsy. Don't kill your fish until you try.

Wow really interesting! I've had a couple of fish with dropsy tried different things but all ended up having to put them to sleep. It was strange that water was good and lots of other fish were fine so seeing this and you saying could be genetic makes sense thankful great video.

I am not a doctor but this was explained so well for the every day person. I have been reluctant to pock My fish with a needle like most channels are saying to do. This video shows that you should not do this without knowledge.I just decided to let nature take its course but it has been more de 20 days and this fish still alive.

This was a great video, very informative. Your explanations are good - you're a good teacher! The dissection was interesting to watch, too. It's been too many years since I dissected a fetal shark in biology class. We've lost goldfish to dropsy though the years, but never knew the underlying causes. None of our pond goldfish have presented with it (knock on wood!), but our aquarium fish were another story, no matter how careful we were with changes and everything else. We stick to pondfish now, various comets and shubunkins!
I've got trypophobia and do not do well watching fish with scales that look like this. But I watch it for educational purposes. The scales really get through me.

I had a Betta who was sick with bloating like this several times....He survived each time-it almost seemed as though he was prone to it and I almost put him down one time because the vet said there was nothing we could do, but he suddenly turned around. He lived for over 6 years (I don't know how old he was when I got him) and was a great fish! I wonder if it was dropsy-I honestly forgot what the vet said-its been years! Great video:)

As someone who occasionally fillets fish I catch, I literally thought I was smelling the fish dissection. The power of the mind!!!
So that's what happened to my dad's Goldfish. We were woefully unprepared to deal with dropsy, and the poor thing passed away. This was certainly helpful, and when I'm better I'll sit down and show him this video.

In my experience, dropsy is one fish illness/disease that seems irreversible. I've dealt with dropsy on several different species of fish in my nature aquarium and all treatment plans have failed and the fish eventually died 😢. Thanks for showing us the exactly what the fish is going through as dropsy occurs.
Great Video. Lots to learn here. One suggestion about showing the microscope details. It would be helpful if you could use some kind of pointer or circle/arrow while talking about a particular area. Would make it easier to match up the visuals with what you are saying. But yeah.. great content. Perfect. One question, how would one go about locating a fish vet in their area?
