How To Keep Your Goldfish Alive For 15 Years

  • The longest-living goldfish on record was 43 years old. But while they're supposed to live at least 15 years on average, yours might not have made it to its 5th birthday. The major problem is often toxin accumulation in the tank from fish poop. By seeding the tank with special bacteria, you can break these chemicals down and make the aquarium a safer home for your pet.
Following is a transcript of the video:
The longest-living goldfish on record was 43 years old. But chances are your goldfish didn't even live a quarter that long. In fact, most goldfish don't survive past their fifth birthday, and that's a major problem since they're supposed to live for about as long as your cat. So why are goldfish dying so young?
The usual culprit behind your goldfish's untimely demise is, well, poop. You see, goldfish waste contains toxins like ammonia that can burn gills and even damage the brain. In the wild, this isn't a problem. Freshwater lakes and ponds are home to armies of bacteria that break it down into less harmful chemicals. But in your home tank, there's no bacteria to be found. You have to introduce it, and that's where a lot of goldfish owners slip up because you can't just buy a fish the same day you get your tank. The process of growing bacteria takes patience.
First, you'll need to remove chlorine from your tank water using a conditioner. Chlorinated tap water is fine for you to drink since it kills off germs, but it's not so great for the bacteria you want to cultivate. Once you've created a safe space for the bacteria to grow, they'll come from all over: the air, the outside of the tank, and any rocks or plants you stick in the tank for decoration. You can also buy commercially sold bacteria cultures grown in labs. After that, all they need is dinner. Fish food will do. As the food breaks down, it releases ammonia for the bacteria to eat, and finally, you wait for a while. Depending on how much bacteria you start with, the process can take about two months. That's right, two months. But then there should be enough bacteria. You can double-check with a simple water test kit.
But here's the thing, all the bacteria in the world won't keep your fish alive if the tank is too small. You see, as these bacteria gobble up goldfish poop, they produce some waste of their own, and if it's not sufficiently diluted, it can kill your goldfish. A dinky, single-gallon bowl is much too small, and even the 10-gallon tank you see in every pet store won't cut it. A single adult goldfish needs at least twice that much water to thrive. That's almost 40 kilograms of water, 2000 times heavier than your goldfish, and even with a huge tank, you'll still need to replace about 30% of the water every two weeks because besides poop, goldfish release hormones and pheromones into their environment, which, if left unchecked, can stunt their growth. That might help explain why goldfish in healthy environments can reach the size of an American football, while your last goldfish wasn't much bigger than your index finger.
Once you have a big, detoxified tank, Goldie just needs one more thing: your attention. Because you're not swimming in the tank with her, it's hard to notice if something's wrong with, say, the water quality. So oftentimes new goldfish owners don't realize anything's amiss until it's too late, and common diseases like fin rot, white spot disease, and fungal infections have already taken hold. So it's a good idea to pay careful attention to how the water looks and smells, and anyway, spending time with your goldfish will be worth it since you can teach Goldie to swim through hoops and eat from your hand.

I hate people like that. I have 6 goldfish in three different tanks. The 2 youngest, less than a year old, are in a 30 gallon tank. The middle 2, a year and a half, are in a 54 gallon corner tank, and the 2 oldest, about 10 years, are in a 150 gallon tank. The elder two sets, recognize us. When it is feeding time, they love to be petted. In fact, all you really have to do is stick your hand in the water and they will come up immediately and rub along your fingers. They aren't just decoration. They have their own little personalities, and they are as much a part of the family as the cats, the dogs, or the dragon.

I work at a Petsmart and I will refuse to sell you a gold fish right now if you're trying to purchase it with a bowl. Generally anything less than 20 gallons I'd refuse that sale and even 20 gallons is pushing it... I know it's cliche to say don't listen to the pet store guy, but hell, don't listen to anybody. If you plan on taking on the privilege of caring for any kind of live creature do the research on your own so you yourself becomes the expert because in the end the only person you can really rely on is yourself. There's plenty of factual and well written reading material out there, especially about fish. There's no need to try to rely on some random stranger at the pet stores info.

Then we got two betta fish, one for my brother and one for me and got a divider for them. They are happy now.

    Simple tips
-Change 25% of the water about every two weeks
-Keep the temperature stable but on the lower side like 72
-Feed a pellet food and some frozen spinach once monthly
    - BIG ONE- have a good filter- goldfish are dirty and big urinators- a canister filter or something that moves 3x your aquarium volume per hour - so if you aquarium is 20 gallons the filter should move 60 gallons an hour-
    - Finally- a good size tank- I say 20 - 40 gallons minimum and be ready to get a bigger tank as they grow

Get a water filter, I look after my disabled neighbour's fish tank, and the most important thing I find, is to have the sponge water filter, clean it every 2 weeks, and add some little stones, that add good bacteria. I bought a little sachet, I put the black litte stones in it, squash them into the water filter compartment, next to the sponge. And occasionally I put real plants, so they can eat fresh greens. They are 5 years now, and look healthy. The sponge filter cleans the fish poo, it gets stuck in there, so as long as you clean it at least every 2 weeks, it'll be ok.

    Very helpful and useful information!
    But a couple notes
One, there are a couple clips of blood parrots, which are cichlids, not goldfish, but have a similar look
The other thing is that goldfish are social creatures and should be kept in at least a pair of trio, with around 20 to 30 gallons of water volume for each fish to help dilute their waste. A 40- or 55-gallon tank would be a good minimum for them
It's also worth noting that this *only* applies to fancy goldfish, those with rounded bodies and long fins, as common goldfish and other long-bodied types tend to do best in large outdoor ponds due to their larger size and activity level
Edit: Oh yeah, and here’s a bonus tip!
Goldfish have very high oxygen demands, so having an airstone to help oxygenate the tank will be a great benefit for them

He always knew when it was time to feed him. Whenever my family and I would go on long trips I would take him with us because I didn't trust anyone to take care of him properly. I had him for 8 or 9 years. I love him very much and I miss him a lot.

Like for example at 03:35 in the video. They require different things. I did not know Goldies could live so long. Mine mostly made it to like 5 to 6 years. I did buy bacterial additives for the water though to help supplement tank changes/cleanings.

Goldfish are supposed to be "cheap, easy, starter pets for beginners and little kids", but they're actually a huge commitment and much harder to keep alive than other pets. One thing I learned with my (now deceased) guinea pigs and (alive) cats is that bigger animals like cats and dogs are actually much easier to keep alive than small "easy starter pets" because the vets can do so much more for them. When my guinea pigs got sick, the vets weren't able to figure out exactly what was wrong and the only treatments they could do were an oxygen tank and syringe food mush. I'm assuming the same applies to goldfish-- a vet can mostly likely do surgery on your dog, but they're unlikely to be able to do surgery on your goldfish.

    Thank you SO SO much.
Fish have personalities.. They can feel emotions; however they are different from ours, they can feel sadness at some extent. A lot of people wonder why their fish die, and, here's the answer:
    1. People are not willing to do any research; for example, a mother might go to the store with her child to get some dog food, the child sees a betta that's only 5.99, and after convincing, the mom agrees to buy it.
    2. Then they go home with some cheap gravel and fish food. Without even rinsing the gravel of dust, they pour some gravel into a wine glass. After all, don't bettas get "stressed" in big tanks?
    3. They pour cold tapwater into the vase and put the betta in immediately.
    4. The fish lasts one week before dying. Many kids wonder why they couldn't keep that betta alive since it was sold in a cup at the pet store:
Those cups for bettas in pet stores are supposed to be water-changed 3x a day to keep ammonia from piling up. Therefore, in the wine glass, the betta was slowly dying because no one even knew what a water change was. The water was also way to cold and had toxic chemicals from the tapwater.
BETTAS NEED A MINIMUM OF 5 GALLONS, A HEATER, AND FILTER.
GOLDFISH NEED *30* GALLONS EACH. THEY DO NOT GROW TO THE SIZE OF THEIR TANK; THAT"S CALLED STUNTING.

Try getting a Betta! They’re super great beginner fish that require significantly less work than goldfish! They ideally only need 5 gallons (you can go as small as you want but I seriously would say ABSOLUTE MINIMUM 1 gallon) and they don’t produce as much waste as goldfish!

    • @burebistta1923
      @burebistta1923 3 ปีที่แล้ว +97

@@mikennasmith you definitely need at LEAST 5 gallons for a single betta. One gallon is way too little. Also, for a betta it’s best if you put natural plants and gravel/sand instead of artificial. Bettas can jump out of the tank so use a lid but if you can’t get a lid use floating plants. Also, make sure you don’t have any sharp decorations because they can tear and damage the large fins of the betta. So, in conclusion, bettas aren’t that easy either.

@@burebistta1923 they’re a lot easier than goldfish! And yeah, ik they need 5 gallons but people INSIST on going small so I make them get at least a gallon. Besides that, silk plants are easy to come by and a lot of tanks come with lids :). Trust me, I work in a pet store (NOT pet smart, f*ck them) and I know what I’m talking about. Agree different animals need different filtration levels. Ironically too much filtration can be just as bad as not enough. Turtles are often the first to go for this since you need to filter them with a filter rated for 2 TIMES the tank's capacity. Regardless how much is actually filled AND requires DAILY cleanings of half hours. Yea I doubt 99% of "turtle owners" knows about this/cares to do this.

Our goldfish Garfield is over 10 years old now and going strong. My Mum never wanted fish, and then my brother got given one so she got stuck with him haha And now she's really attached.
Honestly, think that is just because he's a hardy guy. He survived some terrible conditions for a while because we didn't really know what we were doing and the tank was way too small. Sad to say some of his friends perished as a result.
But he now is absolutely living it up. Really big tank. Plants. Bubbles. Daily pea feeding to get his fibre. We did have another fish Odie that was around for a while in the big tank. Unfortunately, he was a Blackmore and kept getting sick all the time. But he was a sweetheart. He would feed out of our hands. :(
