Bob was my dad's best friend and my god father. I know exactly where in the old Brown rd. yard that VW thing sat. I always wanted to buy it off him myself but never had the time for another project. He's still going strong and " you know what that's worth?" Is still his favorite saying. So glad you had the time to spend with him.

Very interesting, and thanks for sharing. I have bought parts from many salvage yard owners cut from the same cloth, it seems. They are special and part of the American car scene that Bob gives us an eye into. I'm so glad Bob gave us this opportunity.

Always a pleasure, Jerry. It's a rare thing, what you're doing. The combination of your own
and your friends' knowledge, coupled with the digging you all get into, yields not only
entertainment but genuine education as well.

I dealt with Bob some years back, looking for an oil pan for my boys 351 ford p.u. He scratched his head for a minute, went out to an old station wagon in the middle of the yard and opened the tailgate and there it was. Of course he took the old one in trade, hole in all, said he would bang it out and weld it up and resell it. That yard was something else when it was full .

I mean, there’s so many things you can do with that kind of money. In this particular video episode, the old white haired junkman definitely looks like an old greedy profiting bastard. That’s all he is to me...! Some people would have to work their ass off, throughout a whole entire week, before they could lay their hands on that kind of money. Thank you. They always say oh that's worth a lot of money but they still have it after years and years sitting there or they want to much money for a rust bucket and it will sit there till dooms day and never get sold. Take the money while you can i say let people buy them and restore them. Quit hanging on to cars that will never get restored or sold. Ughhh it kills me to watch these videos when they won't budge on price and it will sit there and rust away.

I used to buy many car parts from auto junk yards, I built a few motorcycles from parts motorcycle junk yards using parts from any bike part that I thought would look good. My last build was from parts from Harley ,Triump, Honda, Suzuki, and a few other parts that I thought I could use. The bike wouldn’t win any bike shows for beauty, but it was fast enough that I was able to win enough street racing in only India weekend to pay cash for a Ranchero to haul my bikes and parts around... I found a nice set of Chevy bucket seats in a junk yard to fit my Ranchero and a wooden steering wheel. I really enjoyed rummaging through auto junk yards. Even ended up managing one for a short time after I retired from the Army.

An active military member can get your title.
It's very simple: if the military member has a home of record in a state which will register without title, you sell him the car. He gets the car registered and licensed in his state, then sells the car back to you at a tidy profit.
Now you have a registered car, you take it to your DMV and they will register it no hassle, and some states (Colorado for sure) will cut you a new title.

My son works on guys farm in winter. I will have him get picture of it and send. We live in Marysvale UT. It's ATV tourism town in mountains. Paiute trail is here, 100s of miles old mining roads. I know where all the old cars are. Had a guy in Richfield don't know if he's still there he was from CA had a small warehouse stuffed with movie cars he would rent to movies. Doubt he's still around, I traveled his yard 20 years ago.

We had a junk yard in Sussex County nj named after it's owner Gordy. It was operational from probably the 1950s up till the turn of the century. You could bring your own tools and remove any parts you wanted. You would walk around and find what you wanted. Those days are gone , at least in the woke state of nj

  • @Jrr1976

Fun times in NM! But, modern televised auctions have made POS cars worth a mint because of idiots with too much money that know nothing about cars. Artificial prices are ruining the old car hobby.

    • @thewriter2549
      @thewriter2549  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I've heard this many times. However, think about it. Low prices offer no incentive to save old cars. High prices offer a huge incentive to save old cars, which creates growth for the hobby. Passion drives prices higher, leaving those of us who cannot afford the cars of our dreams to the blame game. I feel your pain. It is my pain, too. It is the pain of many.

@@thewriter2549 I feel no pain. I am in the business of automotive restoration in Texas. I know every aspect needed to survivive where 99% fail in this profession. I am an astute observer of the trends and hobby. I have a completely new early 20's age group that thinks an old Pinto or Vega is worth $10k not running, but they wouldn't give $5k for a restorable Duesenberg. THAT is painful to watch. The other group is inheriting Daddy's money. They don't care a damn thing about cars. They just want to be seen driving something OTHER people think is cool. They won't wait to get their own, they want something now, so they pay huge sums of money being selfish. They pay huge stupid amounts of money because they think that if everyone else is bidding on it, it must be COOL to have. Thus, making everyone with a Ford Grenada think that their car must be worth a fortune because it is original, with patina. I call bullshit!

Let's be real, say he was giving all this away for free, who is going get up off their arse and go to this place with a trailer, spend a day dragging out a rusty heap that would cost thousands of dollars to restore? I thought so, not many takers, so who the f**k in their right mind would be willing to pay to do it? Lol This collection is doomed.

Most of the time almost all of it got scrapped.

@@iknklst I often clear out yards like this, been doing it for years. It's the same story every time. This is the "crazy uncle" that lives out in the sticks with vultures for family just waiting for him to pass on. When he does, the next of kin has no interest whatsoever in the contents, only what the land is worth. A few months later you see a housing development. I can tell you from experience that every one of these places that gets built on, the land is of extremely poor quality and never gets cleaned up properly. The ground is so contaminated that nothing ever grows properly. The chemicals from decades of scrap cars are deep in the ground, it actually rots the foundations of the buildings and their excuse is, "well, you got to expect a little movement in new builds" Well, expect to see that movement for as long as you live there! So good luck to anyone who decides to buy one of those overpriced sardine tins where a yard used to be.

You know it pisses me off sometimes. How the older generation Acts. The guy is apparently in his late 70s or in his early eighties. I'll be 50 next year. And and the older generations got to realize somethingyou have to start letting this stuff go and educate the younger generation because you can't take this stuff with you when you die. I have a lot of stuff and I've been teaching newer generation and I've been selling. I hope us older guys teach the younger generation. And to all your old farts we can't take those parts with us and most of our family members are that are not interested in it they just think it's junk and they will let it go for peanuts. So sell to the younger generation and let them restore their cars .because when you get up there in age . You get attached to everything.
