  • Are the super rare, Super Cobra Jet , Drag Pack 428 Mustang convertibles of 1969-71 headed in the direction of the multi million dollar Hemi 'Cuda convertibles of 1970-71? Kirt Fryer has reason to believe so. He recently acquired this triple black 1969 Drag Pack Mustang convertible with original paint and matching-numbers big block.

It wasn’t a Mustang but my brother found a 1969 Torino Cobra 428 CJ. 52,000 original miles and Dan original paint car. No modifications or anything cut or painted.
Interior, black and perfect. Exterior, no debts, a few paint chips and had a good shine after cleaning.
Once we cleaned all the fuel lines, tank, the 735 dual line from the factory carb, and the brakes we got it going right away.
Decided to keep it as is original. Worth more never painted or modified. It’s parked in southern Ohio.
It’s brother was found in much the same way. In an old barn.
A 1970 Mercury Spoiler with a 429 SCJ w/drag pack. This one a 4 speed car, all the gauges, the louver on the back window, and checkered seats! Black and white checks. This one like the 69 has original paint. Dulled in some areas, rock chips. No rust. We got this one going and it is a fast car and fun to drive. They sit side by side in his garage. I think he likes the 69 better. I’d damn sure be happy with either.
Wonder what kind of money those are bringing?

The old cars are from a day I grew up in. My oldest brother had a 68 roadrunner 383 4speed Hurst. But my best was
69 Olds 442 with his/her's shift in it, best of all I got to drive it. Fast is not the word for it.
My hot rod was 72 Plymouth Sport Fury black with buckets green.
    Good times!!
Thanks for the memories of Good Times ! 🇺🇸

The owner emailed me when he found the car in Canada, which is where and when it was a barn find. I finally got the chance to go by and see the car. He had taken pictures for my Rare Finds column so I could do a story and he has not restored the car. When most people find a treasure they buy it first then tell others later, so being on the spot for a find is rare.

They came with a special C6 that was used behind Cobra Jet cars and even the police cars cars used the special C6. Big servo. Wide ratio trans gears. And extra clutch packs e.t.c. The wide ratio gear box is what really made the cars come off the line alot faster than standard C6's First gear was really short. Made the car have excellent torque from a dead stop.

It doesn't have a battery, so I'll have to put a battery in it." Seriously! If I take the time to come look at one of your cars, you better have it ready to fire up! I see why he didn't want to start it... It needs a Tune Up.

Why should the owner be obligated to start the car just because you show up to look at it? If it was for sale and you were a buyer serious about purchasing the vehicle I understand. But I mean really, how arrogant of an attitude is it to expect the owner to start and run the car just because you show up and want to look at it. If you came to me with that attitude I would tell you to pound sand, and so what it needs a tune up. Really dude what the hell?

Who would put an automatic in that car? No, you gotta have a four speed to appreciate it. My buddy had a 69 fastback and it was super fast. We used to cruise all over Ohio and Michigan in that car, racing Camaro's and Super Bee's along the way. What a time it was to be alive back in the 60s. Everybody drove a fast car if you were young. I remember my mom bought a MGB for $2199.

It primed by the starter when he was cold cranking forever and not tapping the gas, then he added the gas down the throat and sparked it off. The battery was right there next to it on the floor and they've recently gone through the entire fuel system so pretty sure it's been run more than a few times since he got it so it's fine.

A fellow I worked with in the 80's had a 71 or 72 Big block Mustang with the drag package he ordered from overseas and had it delivered to his local dealer when he discharged from the service, his dad some how or the other knew a bunch of the NASCAR people, he took the car to Daytona back when they had an open track day or something like that back then and got his clock cleaned by a big block Corvette, being a Ford man this did not sit well with him, on the way back to PA they stopped in at Hollom&Moody in NC I think he said is where it was, they had one of those huge engines that had recently been outlawed by NASCAR sitting in the corner with a hole in the block, his dad knew the owners (don't ask me how an old guy from PA with a small garage knew them but he did) and got them to sell the engine to his son, it took a couple of years for him to buy a new block and rod, get the engine in the car and get everything working correctly but he did and that thing was a monster, I guess at one point he had to send the car to H&M to get the front modified cause he couldn't get the engine to fit in it, one of the monster trucks, I think The Virginian, came to a local Ford dealership on a promotional tour and someone who saw the engine mentioned to the owners that he knew a guy who had an engine like that, at which time they said "Not like this one", a call was made and the owners of the truck were amazed to see one in a car, I guess they pulled their checkbooks out for the engine but he said no way, he'll never part with it, the car used to run out of Brownsville PA, I haven't seen that guy in years and have often wondered what happened to him and the engine.

Out of the three motors unless that motor was taken out and made into a stroker then indeed it would be a contender if it had a 427 side Oiler in it or 429 you would have Mega bidders on that car

This guy has some nice Mustangs. I'm convinced that it is a rare drag pack car and it is a convertible. But to compare it to a HEMI powered Cuda convertible, he's missing the HEMI part of the equation. This would be comparable to a 440 automatic cuda convertible.

    • @sixpacksandsrts9122

Daniel Scott or as he said. A 440 hemi cuda. If you caught that in the video. Lmao

His main argument was production numbers, which if you compare that angle, it might work.
But yeah, a hemi cuda convert is much more desirable and valuable.

Ya he's got a nice collection but, I think that black convertible has had an engine trans plant because, as the owner of 5 Mustang's 3 of them are 69's a 72 & 73, 3 are also Mach 1's. I also have several big block 60's Galaxie's. Whenever I seen a big block Mustang 390-428 the factory original exhaust manifold bolt pattern is horizontal on the head's to clear the shock tower's, witch are different head casting's also. A lot of guy's will transplant a block big engine from other Ford product's only to find out that the engine verticle manifold bolt pattern hit's the shock tower's. This car may indeed be an original big block car but with the drag pack option somebodies lead foot probably blew the original engine & installed a trans plant. Also big block hi po engines usually came with factory cast iron header's. Some of the head's also had a dual bolt pattern for different application's. Also in the 60's most all hi po optioned car's from Ford were shipped from the factory with the hi-performance part's in the trunk & were dealer installed ie Tri-power & dual 4 barrel set up's. Which make's wonder what ever happened to all of the stock manifold's & 4 barrel carb's & intake's the mechanic's removed, along with the stock exhaust manifold's. Gee if we only knew as car collector's back then where all this was going, I was somewhat lucky & got my 18 or so car's way before the craziness took off, I don't suffer from the 20-20 hindsight issue! but that's another story.

please, please learn how to use apostrophes - they are not meant for plural nouns/verbs (5 mustangs not 5 mustang's).
"mustang's" means belonging to the mustang (ex. "my mustang's rims got bent when i ran over that crowd of orphans").
you, on the other hand, stick them on every word you want to make plural and make them look as possessives instead.
