Now this is a scan tool video. I'm a DIYer but like a lot of DIYers I somehow became a reference point for friends and family without tools so I'm more of an unpaid fleet mechanic with a 9-5
I myself have three subarus, and most of my friends have at least one and they consult me before going to the dealer most times. This is an invaluable video for someone like myself. Been trying to justify getting a scan tool for a while and I think I'll be picking up the Phoenix Lite II.
Hey my friend I was wondering if I could ask you a question .. I was driving the brz I just bought when I noticed my windshield wipers weren't working. I stopped to check fuses and after not finding any blown returned to my car. When i went to start it it was in limp mode and barely even at that. I had it towed home and after looking I noticed that squirrels had chewed through part of my wiring harness. I reconnected the ones I saw and thought I fixed it but then found more chewed wires that were laying down in the car below the harness that I need to figure out where they came from. Do you think it's gonna be more of a headache than that and the squirrels made more of a mess of things than I'm aware of or do you think I should be able to handle this with my dad alone at our house ?? This sucks lol
Been watching you a while and now I myself am a dealer tech. This is good insight for what I can buy for myself when the other techs are using the factory scan tools. Never heard of topdon till now.
In the uk local shops (the decent ones) are taking on franchises, 1 has a kwikfit franchise and has been given EVERY scan and computer tool known to be able to change exhausts, brakes, tyres etc. Same with another who's a mr clutch franchise and been given every computer tool known to man. The big manufacturers give a huge discount to companies like halfords & kwikfit etc for there computer & scan equipment so it's a smart move imo
All of this may be designed to force out the mom and pop. The mom and pop will likely knuckle under and buy the scan tools to stay in business and the consumer is going to pay and pay either at the dealer or the mom and pop.
I bought a phenix smart 2 years ago, don't use it much, but when I do need it, it's cheaper than going to the dealer for a 1 hour diagnostic fee for them to say there is nothing wrong. I've used it to fix an evap leak problem on my new 2020 compass, bleed brakes on gmc pickups, graph and find the bad crank sensors on my other jeeps and reset my brother's maintenence reminders on his john Cooper mini... its paid for itself withing a year and it costed me 2200 bucks.
I have an Autel Maxipro MP808 which is between the prices of the tools you mentioned. I don’t know how it compares but so far it’s done everything I’ve needed on a base model 2013 Outback without Eyesight. At the time it was the cheapest bidirectional scanner I could find. Before I bought that I bought a Bluedriver Bluetooth code reader which I still get plenty of use from since I leave it plugged in at all times and if a light comes on I can scan with my phone immediately, I’ve also used it before to monitor coolant temps on a steep mountain road.
There exists some nice opensource alternatives, which work with a 10$ adapter: - FreeSSM, very good for older cars but lacks newer features like CVT diagnostic - RombRaider, also for new Subarus
Thanks for the reviews. I just bought a ThinkDiag 2 (Phone/Tablet based app driven bluetooth dongle device) that seems to be almost identical to the TopDon interface/function in many of it's features. I have only briefly used it to date, but it seems to offer a lot of features for the price especially for most DIY mechanic stuff. I got mine for $125, which is more in line with my limited use for such a tool.
@@bobschroedterI don't have a CVT so I can't verify that particular feature. I was able to program in new tire pressure sensors on my 08 Outback, and release the e-brake on a 2012 Legacy.
Just passing this on as I’m looking into a good DIY user scanner. I’ve just got a response from Topdon on the subscription costs for the Phoenix Lite 2. 1 year $495 and 2 year is $795.

I bought a XTOOL D8 and a Thinkcar Thinktool PROS last year. I returned the Thinkcar because it did not support certain features that they guaranteed (I emailed them directly) would be supported. I chose the D8 because $700 is a reasonable entry cost, you get 3 years of free updates (vs. 2 with others), and the yearly cost after the free period is less than it's competitors. The main reason is that their customer support is top notch - I would email them a question and often times I will get a response in 1-3 days, whereas Thinkcar and other manufacturers would take at least 1.5 to twice as long. The one thing that people need to know is that if a manufacturer states their tool supports a particular feature, it may not support that feature for all makes/models. Also, if that feature is not part of your car's capabilities, that tool can not support that feature (e.g. I can not bleed the ABS on my '03 WRX because it does not have that capability to begin with).
Good video and, as always, timely. I'm currently keeping a couple of elderly Gen4 Outbacks alive (they've been excellent vehicles, one at 180k miles and the other at 108k) but my only "diagnostic tool" is a lowly Innova code reader - requires lots of intuition and thought process to link a code to the problem without merely unloading the parts cannon. A scan tool surely would have helped me with my evap system woes. Thanks, man. You've convinced me to get off my wallet and find a scan tool. My '19 F350 6.2 gasser is out of warranty and I'll have something to help if, God forbid, it starts having issues. EDIT: Got my Topdon Phoenix Pro (between the Phoenix Elite and the Phoenix Lite).
Great video. I just changed out the lock-out solenoid on the CTV body valve. I spent $480 on an Autel Maxicon mk808s to clear and AT relearn. The 2023 versions have bi-directional functions, best value for my DIY needs to keep my 14 Forester XT alive. But the TOPDON you referenced has a free 2 year upgrade, which autel does not🤔, now I got buyer’s remorse.
I'm a DIY guy who also helps his friends I've been using the think diag it's a Bluetooth OBD2 sensor that works with an app on your phone and it's able to do diagnostic information for specific vehicles $40 a year for that make model brand ie Toyota Lexus or Honda Acura. My most recent example of use was to bleed the brakes of my accurate TL I was able to choose which caliper I wanted to Auto bleed and I was able to use my phone to keep hitting the bleed button and it was able to Auto bleed until it came out clear no bubbles on each one

Great video. I was looking into the TOPDON features coverage. I wanted to see if I could make an adjustment to VDC on my 2008 Outback with 2015 STi steering rack. The steering angle vs G-sensor discrepancy causes VDC to come on sometimes so I have to disable it every time I drive. Having the ability to program this would possibly solve the problem.
I use the VXDiag interface with my ssm3 ssm4, its about $400, there is just an extra step you have to load drivers in the ssm program file folder. Also use a pirated version of SSM, but have to change your laptop date back to 2020 ahahahahaha. Shhhhh, I don't feel like paying 2 grand a year for DIY stuff on my 2020 STI. ahahaha, don't hate me MrSuabru for cheaping out!!!😇😇😇😇
Thank you Mr. Subaru, as usual you give a great explanation. I am a DIY guy with a 2013 Crosstrek. Have changed my CVT fluid out twice, {drained it, dropped the pan cleaned it; installed new strainer, new fluid BUT NO way to check the CVT fluid temperature. Would the Topdon AD500 meet THAT need for me please? {CVT fluid temp, in addition the water temperature?}. Thank you in advance. I just replaced my 10 year old coolant hoses, (Yes all 11, and the two thermostats AND the two cvt cooler/heater hoses.}. What a pain; but don't have to worry about any getting dry rot or bursting on me for another 10 years. Used Gates hoses except for the two CVT fluid hoses to the cooler HAD to go to Subaru for those.
I have a question do any of these off-the-shelf scan tools allow you to go into the body control module and turn on or off functions such as switching the daytime running lights to the fog lights?
Does Subaru have a master mechanic manual for specify shop repairs? Or a manual for step-by-step how to install a short block and turbocharger after rod bearing failure and turbocharge failure. For a 2016 WRX and where can I get one? thank you.
I have an AUTEL MaxiCheck MX808 for my 2016 outback and 2008 ram diesel and so far so good. Mr Subaru….. What do you think about this one for a DIYer ?
Does the 2016 outback have a "dealer" or "test mode"? Seems like all older models and newer models have it but this particular model doesn't. And no green connectors under the dash
Well my ABS light turned on but no engine codes on my ‘18 Forester. I’ve bought two different OBD2 BLE code readers hoping to be able to scan the ABS codes. Both did not work. The two I tried were BlueDriver and OBDLink MX+ just so others know even though lots of people online say these can do it. If anyone out there knows what can do it in the $100-200 price range please let me know, thanks!
I am a complete and utter novice when it comes to car terminology, maintenance, and all things car related. Unfortunately, this left me at risk of sharks at the dealership service center. I've learned my lesson the hard way through my wallet, which left me disillusioned. I want to ensure I'm taking the right steps to keep my 2021crosstrek sport in functioning shape. Thanks for the information breakdown! Any recommendation on basic diagnostic tools for intro level 101 troubleshooting?
So, came on this video since my '06 Forester is tossing a air bag light. Its got other issues and I have been looking for a low cost code reader for the air bag codes. Seems to be a problem to find.... I am not going to spend $$$$ for a diagnostic to fix a $2500 car. Could be a $50 part that I would be OK with but not if it takes me $500 tool to find it.
What is the cheapest option that allows one to disable the evaporative system running/buzzing for quite a long duration (15 minutes) even though the vehicle is off. I think this might be contributing to the battery drain issues with newer Subarus.
I need a tool that can clone a 2013 Subaru WRX STI ECM mine is intermittent and I have a replacement but need to program in the VIN so the car will run.
Now I got an Ancel FX4000 tool and that has been pretty good. Could have some better features on it. I do think you can get software updates for it as well.
I doubt I can open and close the windows, but I think it can read and write almost everything I'd ever need with Autel MaxiAP AP200 OBD2 scanner with bluetooth to my cellphone for $50 at Amazon.
I have a Xtool D8 and I unable to connect to ODS on a Subaru Forester 2009-2011. But I have no trouble to connect to ECM,BCM Airbag but ODS always say fail communication. I want to know which scan tool can access that?
Bought mine on a black friday deal. 🤪. I love it but kind of dont know what to do with it of hand. Health check says i have a couple of things wrong, not sure if they are legit.
Hello, this is a random question , but can you point me in a direction for my WRX STI 2017 2.5 code P2101. It has TGV deletes, deleted 2nd air, deleted evap, deleted pvc. Added cobb flex fuel. I have followed the instructions trying to find wiring issues but no luck. Any recommendation will instantly be appreciated.
Mr Subaru, my forester is about 10 years old. Could you make a video on diagnosing common problems at the 10 year mark? Or, what preventive maintenance to make on a decade old Subaru?
Over the years as a technician ive been......um...persuaded to become the main electrical and diagnostic technician and I have been through a few different scan tools and I used to have that same snap on scan tool but I just found it didnt cover alot of what I needed but I always was using the scope functions...but I ended up selling it to the shop and I bought a autel maxisys elite and a picoscope and still had money left to put in my pocket but I truly can not be happier with it and I was worried about taking that chance but it was the best 6k(for scanner scope leads and any available accessories for both and a cart to store everything in also) I have spent in a very long time.... I'd love to hear your thoughts on one if you have a chance to try one out note I work on mainly Subarus Porsche and Vw/audi vehicles and I can do 99% of everything I could do with the OEM tool including module coding key programming even on the European cars dsg transmission duel clutch adaptation and you name it.. I'd really like to see what you think of it if you get your hands on one to try I'd bet money that you would be impressed and really like it
Does the topdon change timing and the speed sensors? My subbie is 5 miles off under so it’s adding mileage that Isint real so I’m not happy about that. Ppl have said put larger tires on it but that’s just silly I know it can be fixed I’m just unsure how. Scan tools change everything in the ECU and that’s the way I think it should be fixed
What would be the cheapest way to get an OBD-I scanner (or Subaru Select Monitor), for a 1997 European Subaru Forester SF. (All OBD-II can't communicate with the "ECU").
Hello, I love you for a long time, thank you. You provided technical information in a practical and professional way. I have a technical question. I own a 2012 Tribeca, and I have a problem with the transmission.
I need a cheap scanner that can access the VDC system on my car. I have code C0071 which is the steering angle sensor, and it's not sending a signal. I know that much for sure. I don't have the funds to pay my mechanic to repair the SAS, and it's the only thing my car needs for a safety. It's a 2007 Legacy Spec.B. I am looking at the Autel AP200 since it says it can calibrate the SAS, but I'm not sure if that's the right tool for me. Thanks in advance!
Mr. Subaru I have watched several of your videos recently, however not come across any which state your Mechanics Qualifications or experience. Your coveralls look great but are you a genuinely qualified Subaru Mechanic ? Would really be interested in your reply.
How about a video on a 2017 wrx with code p0018. my scan tool shows the cam phaser not returning to zero as commanded( takes longer than it should but eventually does return to zero). swapped ocv and sensors and no help. I saw a article about the 2018 wrx has updated phaser due to sludge accumulation in them and causing problems. I'm a aircraft and ex diesel mechanic so I can tackle a phaser change if needed. I was wondering if there was a way to safely clean them out in place or something to help the situation. The Subaru trouble shooting points to a problem with the ECM also. My local Subaru dealer is absolutely no help and says they cannot tell me if there is a service bulletin concerning updated phasers. Help.
I never thought I'd say this, but....an advantage of automobile's running on electric motors....the scan tool monopoly will end.....as we'll as the Billy Bob part changer, tacking on parts not broke.
Great video. I've been having issues with both my Autel and Launch bidirectional scanners to control various EVAP and variable valve timing solenoids on pre-2010 Subarus. Topdon's website says that the Phoenix Plus is compatible, but do you have experience with their bidirectional capabilities with older Subarus? It looks like Topdon uses some of the Launch software. Thanks
As someone who does not know much about using a Diagnostic Scan Tool, I am curious to how these compare to just using the obd2 bluetooth adapter and the Adroid/IOS software for phones or tablets.
@@pfunklife9379 So the mobile app would more or less just read the data. I can see the bi-directional control make a big difference. I wonder if there is any mobile app with the bi-directional control. He mentions that the one scan tool is running off of android. I wonder if it would ever be available to just buy the phoenix software and run it on your own android device.
Great video, Thanks! Love the Phoenix Elite it's my go to scanner! Would the Subaru factory tool work with a J2534 pass thru or you need the Denso tool for 3K?
YIKES !!!,,,In the past year I bought a 2008 Impreza.......In order to monitor the cooling system...with the Subaru expected manufacturer defect / head gasket....I have been watching COOLANT TEMP as I drive because the Impreza dash has an idiot light......with a BLUE DRIVER.....that does a bluetooth connection to my phone.......FYI the blue cold light goes out at 122 degrees.....the high temp red light comes on at around 230........Even though the heater no longer works.... after adding not one but two Subaru "Cooling System Conditioners".......it probably clogged the heater core. As I look for a local mechanic who can diagnose and probably R & R the engine.......I did exclude the dealerships....Blue Driver around $100.00..... joe
If you get one for your personal car will all the functions you currently have access to still work after the 2 years of free updates? Another way of putting it is are 'updates' just another word for 'subscription'?
from my understanding, thats how most of these platforms work. So if you bought it today and it expires in 2025, you should be able to perform diagnostics on any make pre February 2025. Other than that, your tool would still work, but no more updates. Subscription is about $400~ $500 so take that into consideration if needed. Im thinking of getting the LITE 2 or something similar, but since my vehicles are pre 2019, i wont be looking into renewing subscription.

VXDIAG interface goes for about $260 and it's SSM3 and SSM4 compatible.
DST-i is no longer in production. DST-010 is only compatible down to 2014 Forester and cannot interface via SSM3
Great video man! You could do voice overs for so many things! 😂 you explain things very well too great job
I hate using pirated software but ssm3 and 4 are amazing, ssm4 can support pasthrough without the denso interface supports tectrick cables
I have a question do any of these off-the-shelf scan tools allow you to go into the body control module and turn on or off functions such as switching the daytime running lights to the fog lights?
Great video great information and research!
Good video. Are there any diagnostic scan tools for suburu Sambar.
Well, I don't think one can beat BTSSM (Bluetooth Subaru Select Monitor) and OBDLink2-combination in affordability.
TOPDON c'est les meilleurs !
Does Subaru have a master mechanic manual for specify shop repairs? Or a manual for step-by-step how to install a short block and turbocharger after rod bearing failure and turbocharge failure. For a 2016 WRX and where can I get one? thank you.
Just wondering if the top Don will do some of the bi directional functions that the snap on will not. Also keys?
Which scan tool for a DIYer to thoroughly test CAN Bus errors? Seems to be relatively common with Subaru?
Hi, how can I avoid that the fog lights shut off with the high lights??, It can be modify with a scaner?, For a 2017 Subaru Impreza
Have you done an oil line replacement tutorial on the legacy gt?
I need to swap a BIU on my 2007 Legacy will a Phoenix Lite 2 do the reprogram
I need some help deciding what to buy
-Launch CRP919
-Topdon ArtiDiag Pro
-Otofix D1 Lite
Any suggestions ?
Well my ABS light turned on but no engine codes on my ‘18 Forester. I’ve bought two different OBD2 BLE code readers hoping to be able to scan the ABS codes. Both did not work. The two I tried were BlueDriver and OBDLink MX+ just so others know even though lots of people online say these can do it. If anyone out there knows what can do it in the $100-200 price range please let me know, thanks!
Can the artidiag set the control valve to 55 degrees?
I need a scanner or tool to reset my maintenance light on my Subaru Impreza .. cat finds video that’ll show me how
i want to correct the odometer in my subaru forester 2003 what device should I buy?
With the AD500 can you use it to replace rear brakes on a Subaru with the newer models to engage and disengage the break
Lol I've been waiting for this video
Have seen the Autel tools, if so do you have an opinion especially concerning subaru work?
What is the cheapest option that allows one to disable the evaporative system running/buzzing for quite a long duration (15 minutes) even though the vehicle is off. I think this might be contributing to the battery drain issues with newer Subarus.
I need a tool that can clone a 2013 Subaru WRX STI ECM mine is intermittent and I have a replacement but need to program in the VIN so the car will run.
I need a way to re-program a gauge cluster to start the engine.
I have a P2122 code on a 2020 Subaru Forester. Any suggestions on how to fix or clear? Should I just take to the dealership? Thanks.
Now I got an Ancel FX4000 tool and that has been pretty good. Could have some better features on it. I do think you can get software updates for it as well.
What is the biggest difference between the Phoenix Elite and the Phoenix Lite 2 for servicing Subaru vehicles? Great video.
sounds like all hardware (screen size, specs, etc), no software. so you're paying about a half a grand-a grand so to speek for some hardware.
Can the Phoenix elite program keys or fobs? Also can it reprogram the TPMS sensors?
I doubt I can open and close the windows, but I think it can read and write almost everything I'd ever need with Autel MaxiAP AP200 OBD2 scanner with bluetooth to my cellphone for $50 at Amazon.
MaxiAP AP200 did not make any support for Subaru after 2018+ , from the day it came out
I have a Xtool D8 and I unable to connect to ODS on a Subaru Forester 2009-2011. But I have no trouble to connect to ECM,BCM Airbag but ODS always say fail communication. I want to know which scan tool can access that?
The manual in brz can it be change for a t56 double overdrive tran
What’s your opinion on the verus pro?
Solid machine. Only upgraded to the ZUES for speed, smaller scan module, and battery power.
Thanks for the info! Any thoughts on say an Innova 5160? That is more along my budget. I am an occasional DIYer.
Chrysler and Ford, have to pay for computer information on top of the purchase of the the scan tools.Chrysler started this in 2019
What would be the cheapest way to get an OBD-I scanner (or Subaru Select Monitor), for a 1997 European Subaru Forester SF. (All OBD-II can't communicate with the "ECU").
Great video!
Can the Xtool D8 cove Subaru?
The scan tools in this video and scan tools costing more than $600(?) have bi-directional control.
As I look for a local mechanic who can diagnose and probably R & R the engine.......I did exclude the dealerships....Blue Driver around $100.00..... joe
Are foxwell scanners like the NT301 ok to use on my 2008 outback?
anyone has suggestion on a diag tool that can do GPF regen ?
is there a code to imput to make the navigation/radio stop asking if I agree each time I start to travel in my other touring subaru ?
No
@@MrSubaru1387 bummer
It's a liability issue. Because someone somewhere got hurt sometime, they cover their butts with an unavoidable warning.
I have a JDM 2000 Subaru Legacy B4 twin Turbo with check engine light on...anyone knows which scan tool works???
Are any of these scan tools made in America?
If you get one for your personal car will all the functions you currently have access to still work after the 2 years of free updates? Another way of putting it is are 'updates' just another word for 'subscription'?
Good question. I was wondering about that myself.
from my understanding, thats how most of these platforms work.
HEY, MR, SUBARU, I NEED TO CHAT WITH YOU ABOUT MY SUBARU ABOUT SOME ISSUES, IT IS POSSIBLE TO DO THAT?
Hey MrSubaru1387 long long time follower and have had many talks before, I was wondering what that online manual was you had given me years ago was? It had all Subarus just put in the year and model and it gave you every torque spec and outline for every part of the car, thank you for all you do your a real blessing for when I'm in a pinch 👍
Mainly need it for case halve torque specs and so on
Great video.
