Thank you for making this very informative video. I find the biggest issue with researching scan tools is most companies market all their tools as if they're the best tool on the market, with vague claims about scanning all codes and erasing codes, but they never tell us the limitations of each device. Most of the time they imply that each device can do everything that's possible to do with any scan tool. I've researched dozens upon dozens of scan tools, over the past two years, and none of them give us a full list of their possibilities. Most only list half a dozen or so functions, at best.
@@jublywubly that’s exactly what makes it hard for me too. They never say what they can’t do, but they scream really loud about the things that they can do. I own a Autel MX808 which I purchased in 2018 that as autel stated wasn't bidirectional but I could do injectors, abs, E-brake, DPF, and several other functions. In 2020 I believe they unlocked the MX 808 to become "bidirectional" and could do headlights, vin and sum other hot features.
Can the Thinkdiag 2 read Mercedes models from 2006 and up? including directional like headlights, ABS ...etc, and module ECU programing like key fobs? Thank you.
If a scan tool cannot take a vehicle out of limp mode it is no good. This tool can be purchased on Amazon for roughly $170. It Can reset the timer in the ECU and synchronize the cam to the crank. This is how you unlock a vehicle from limp mode. Mechanics will not tell you this they will charge you for all those fault codes that are not correct. You must reset the timer in the PCM and synchronize the cam to the crank then fix the next fault code that shows up that is the original problem. This fault code can be as simple as changing the transmission fluid or changing a will speed sensor.. PC m's do not commonly go bad. And it is very unlikely you need a new transmission rebuild just because your fluid went low. When fault codes pop-up if they are not taking care of a timer starts counting and when it runs out it puts your vehicle in limp mode and usually won't let it shift out of second gear. You can simply reset the timer in the PCM with a bi directional scanner which can be purchased for as low as $170 on Amazon. Simply email the company and ask them if their scanner will perform this task. If they say it will only erase codes it is not the correct scanner.

Does the ThinkDiag2 scantool do Range Rover Sports? I've heard its very difficult, unless you pay about $400 or more for bespoke Range Rover diags, AND you have to lock your VIN to it?
@8:17 The Launch x431 CReader Elite is the truth. It can (almost) do everything the OEM scanner can. You can buy it for a specific manufacturer and its subsidiaries with lifetime software support. And you can always buy other programs for other OEMs for a yearly subscription. One of the top 5 buys of 2024.
I checked a 2018 E class. It has Xenon lights coding. For a 2018 BMW 5 series it has a function called ‘reset starter lock’ could be that? And also has fuel pump data and active tests.

It basically tells the car that the key is still with the owner and it syncs it again to enable the immobilizer functionality again... Isn't that what is implied by this feature?

With a couple of software changes, the device could be a lot faster and user friendly.
The ThinkDiag 2 has so many pages of functions for your Audi, it’s crazy. More than I’ve seen for any car. It’s gotta be enough to scan for Adblue faults.
Awesome video Steve. I love the break down. Thank you for sharing. I really like the fact that you can buy a very capable scan tool for a very low price. You may have some things that you have to get used to like short cable etc. But having that option without spending $1000's.
The orange LAUNCH tool should allow you to add additional car brands through the Mall. I have a Benz specific one that I was able to add Honda/Acura software to. They do come at a cost to add and I believe they require yearly subscriptions for the add-on vehicle brands.
Can you explain how required the subscription is? Is the tool totally useless on old models even without it? So if you rarely use one you still have to pay subscription even if you don't use it? That's crap if so. I can see paying to update to newer models but paying just to use the tool you already bought is crap if that's what's required. If I use it twice in 5 years I just paid $650 to read my car twice if it's $100 a year. Can't believe so many companies scam people like that.

I think I would call your "compromise" tools something else, like "cross-over" or "hybrid" since they seem to offer the better traits of the low price and advanced functionality. "Compromise" sounds like, well, compromise.
I like the ‘hybrid’ description, but maybe for an intermediate (between 2 and 3). I say that, because I’ve been testing one that you’ll get to see in the next video. June 10th.
To answer your question about which I like better, the ThinkDiag or the Xtool - I have to tell you what I don’t like about the Xtool. First: they have an interesting subscription idea where you can just buy the cars that you want, but nowhere on their website or on Amazon or on the App Store does it tell you what the subscription prices are. It’s always been my thought that when a company won’t tell you the price or it’s very hard to find, you’re usually not going to like it. Second: check out the App Store and look at the ratings on the app. They are terrible. It seems like that tool is very buggy. It would be very frustrating to use. Hope that helps.
You try getting a smart key cut lately? Nobody wants to do the job without selling you a key, programming it to your car, and then cutting the key blank. You also need an adapter to program smart keys, so that feature isn’t 100% ready out of the box.

I haven't purchased, but I didn't see my vehicle as supported but looking again it might be. The data link is good but I don't have a bi-directional scanner..@@ToolDemos
Will it work on a 2014 Dodge Ram and a Nissan Pathfinder 2013.
Yes it will.
I am looking for a Lotus scan tool, impossible to find, can I use a Toyota one?
Even if you have the Toyota engine, I doubt the scanner will connect to your car. Does Lotus have a dealership scanner that is available aftermarket?
Thanks for the video! Having the ability to program my own keys is something I hadn't considered up till now. I could have purchased an excellent DYI'er scan tool for the money I spent on a locksmith's emergency service for a replacement key.
It’s great to have a whole set of new abilities.
Will Thinkcar 689bt work on a C8 Corvette....
Yes, I looked and 2024 is the latest model year Vette covered. It can access 24 modules on that car and can bi-directionally control 12 of them.
You say in the video that this tool can program a new key, how do you get the PIN number for programming? I cannot find any info or videos that show a successful key program because the tool will not supply the PIN.
Something like that will require a specific key programming tool. This one is limited to cars with less security.
hi, I am looking for a scan tool that will work for a 2020 Nissan 370Z and a 2010 Toyota Corolla S 1.8 L with the least amount of compromise? Thanks DRM

Do you know if VW or any car trouble codes are recorded by the vehicle ?
Yes. They stay in memory until you erase them.
@@ToolDemos Thanks
Thinking of buying this to chase down some SRS lights on my 2012 nissan armada, also need to program a remote for a 2012 dodge caravan. What limitations would the thinkdiag2 have for these vehicles?
It’ll do what you need with the Nissan SRS, but not the key fobs in your van.
hi,
will this work for volvo s60 2002 ??
Seems great, super interested. Does this or any tool do a/c diagnostic? My wife’s 07 v4 Camry has an issue that I suspect is one of the pressure switches, one of which is located inside the dash and it would be great to be able to check this without having to take the whole dash apart.
Thanks!
I just checked on a 2006 Corolla. It did not have any pressure data.
@@ToolDemos thank you for looking, seems great so I ordered it anyway!
Thoughts on Innova CarScan Pro Model 5610?
They offered to send me one, I might review it soon.
Does the ThinkDiag2 scantool do Range Rover Sports? I've heard its very difficult, unless you pay about $400 or more for bespoke Range Rover diags, AND you have to lock your VIN to it?
Yup Range Rover Sport 2005-2022
Does this do regen on a 2022 Dodge 6.7 diesel
They have a function called ‘Stationary Desoot’ on a ‘22 Ram 3500. I’m sure that’s it.
Wouldn't a J2534 pass through tool be the best bet cause you can scan, run test, and reflash ECU's and other modules?
You would be able to do more, yes. But, you gotta pay thousands to get that.
problem is both bluetooth scanners asks for payment after 1 year which doesnt make sense
True
If you don't keep the subscription for the Topdon OBDII dongle, will it not work at all? I assume it would still work just not have any new cars.
It works as a code reader from what I hear. Mine is expired now, I should take a look.
Very true. If you do your own repairs, buy one for that car.
Will this code Mercedes headlight modules? Also will it do after collision engine start disable/non disable for bmw Mercedes? Will it read fuel pump?
I checked a 2018 E class. It has Xenon lights coding. For a 2018 BMW 5 series it has a function called ‘reset starter lock’ could be that? And also has fuel pump data and active tests.
Yes I have 2018 Mercedes cla250 I changed headlight now module needs coding from what it looks like it stays on no signals no high beam . And wired noise from headlight motor
@@ToolDemoshey and I also need to know if it will scan a 2023 Nissan pathfinder
@@33hilaae weird.
@@33hilaae yes, it has pages of functions for 2023 Pathfinder
It doesn’t program your key, to the car but it programs the car to accept the key , as a valid and accepted device to start etc. The key is not programmable.
As long as it saves the 350 key charge the 150 tow charge to the dealer and the 100 over charge as they bend you over, I'll take the key that turns the engine over! No other scan tool gives you that huge key saving$$$.
It basically tells the car that the key is still with the owner and it syncs it again to enable the immobilizer functionality again... Isn't that what is implied by this feature?
At which price level can I get abs and steering graphing. So I can analyze which wheel sensor. Or electric steering function? 2011 Toyota venza.
The ThinkDiag2 will give you live data from both of those modules.
Probably a long shot here but does it list any Ford Falcons (Australia) Great informative video too mate.
It lists Ford North America, Europe, and Australia. I couldn’t get the Australia list to work, but European Ford coverage does have Falcon up to 2014.
@@ToolDemos legend thanks
Did you actually test the key copy feature? Found a video claiming that feature doesn't work.
No, I didn’t.
If I have a 03 toyota matrix. I need to change the abs controller and reprogram it. You are saying there is no way to reprogram that module without the 5-10k oem tool?
Right. Assuming you do need to reprogram it, that must be done with a J2534 passthrough device and access to Toyota Techstream.
With the thinkdiag2 program the immobiliser/key for nissan pathfinder TI 2011?
No. It can’t do immobilizer programming for that car. The closest it can do is remote fob registering.
Will the tool you recommended work for programming 2014 SUBARU Brz push to start remote. I lost my key fob a month ago and had a locksmith come to my house and make one it cost me 1400$ now it worked for a few weeks now my cars not recognizing it. I have 2 Subarus and I am upgrading a lot in the brz and don't want to pay another locksmith for his year in upgraded software.
No, it doesn’t. But… if you are willing to take a risk, it does register keys in Toyota 86s.
I am a diyer but I want a bidirectional with topology mapping. Any ideas best bang for the back
Yes, you’ll see that next week on this channel.
The key saving just sold me buy one of these just for making keys way cheaper.

Yup. Great feature!
what about the xtool D7 scan tool bi directional
I’ve seen them, but haven’t tested one yet. I know someone that has one, he likes it.
What do you recommend for Toyota Hybrid?
I really like the Launch Toyota scanner. If you only want it for that, give it a try: amzn.to/3OyROGf
Thanks for the informative video 👍
Glad it was helpful, I appreciate ya.
Thanks for the information. BTW, you had to work to get that oil filter out. On my Mercedes Benz, it's right on the top, front of the engine, and comes off with one 32mm wrench.
Yeah, that’s one of my least favorite parts of the Tundra.
It works with Honda?
Yes it does
@@ToolDemos THANKS A LOT!🔧
What tablet you use please thank you
For the ThinkDiag 2, I use an Apple iPad Air (4th gen)
Is that compatible with the gen 2 Toyota Prius?
It has coverage for 8 Prius sub-models from 2001-2024.
@@ToolDemos Oh, thanks. Question; does it analyse the traction battery cells too? (if you know). And I have a parasitic draw on the 12 volt battery too. Could it identify that???
@@alext8828 it can read live data and trouble codes and do active testing on the HVB. As far as draw testing goes, that’s not typically done with a scanner.
Good day to you. Does this code reader program replacement parts like cam shaft sensors to a vehicle that it is going on? I had replaced a faulty part on a Hyundai Sante Fe & still had an issue.
It can do some coding and recalibrations but no programming.
The "iLink 400 vivent" is $156 brand new and works great for doing crank shaft relearn procedure on the GM vehicles.
I have a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Sportback
Will the think diag 2 work on my vehicle ?
I just checked for the Lancer CS and CT for 2011 there are tons of active tests and live data for that car.

@@ToolDemos Thank you! Much appreciated!
@@ToolDemos I bought the Honda X431 Elite. It was a few dollars less than the Thinkdiag. Has lifetime free updates, and $45 to add another manufacturer. The device is a tad slow, but for home use it's fine. Definitely has a lot of capabilities. I've already done a couple new keys that only cost $50 including the keys and cutting, so like you stated it was with it just for that.
With a couple of software changes, the device could be a lot faster and user friendly.
Which scanner for an Audi A4 2017 with an Adblue fault. Thanks
You’re always appreciated, Tony. I agree, these capabilities on an affordable tool were unheard of 10 years ago.
subscribtion is one time payment only?
@@alexpetrut09 the first year is included when you purchase the scanner. After that, you have to purchase another one year subscription.
Got a recommendation for a bi-directional scanner for a '97 XJ Cherokee Sport? It has the 4.0l inline 6 and AX15 manual trnasmission.
No, sorry. This one only goes back to 2014 on the Cherokee. Grand Cherokee back to the ‘90’s.
Does the thinkdiag 2 work for 2011 Mazda 3?
Yes it does, including bi-directional control of PCM, ABS, and TCM
Thx for doing this! Greatly needed and appreciated!❤

The orange LAUNCH tool should allow you to add additional car brands through the Mall. I have a Benz specific one that I was able to add Honda/Acura software to. They do come at a cost to add and I believe they require yearly subscriptions for the add-on vehicle brands.
Yes, it does. Pretty cool idea.
Please send me the information about that scan tool thank you very very much very informative thank you for being there
Lots of info on their site: shrsl.com/4dmxp
Can you explain how required the subscription is? Is the tool totally useless on old models even without it? So if you rarely use one you still have to pay subscription even if you don't use it? That's crap if so. I can see paying to update to newer models but paying just to use the tool you already bought is crap if that's what's required. If I use it twice in 5 years I just paid $650 to read my car twice if it's $100 a year. Can't believe so many companies scam people like that.
That’s right. It is time based, not usage based. Also, even older models get shut off when the subscription expires.
@@ToolDemos guess I'm not interested in one then. Most DIY that work on their own vehicle needs usage based. Ridiculous the scams they pull after you already paid a premium for the device because of the software
@@ToolDemos you think you could make a video comparing the best you've tried that have no recurring subscriptions required to continue using them? You'd think be a lot of diyers that work on their own car when it's down that would be interested. Thanks for the videos
@@jackle842000 thanks, and yes I’ve thought about it. I think I found a tool that fits that description. If I like it, you’ll see it before the end of the year.
@@ToolDemos that's good, needing to order one this week though. Would you mind telling me which one it is you're testing so I can add it to my options to consider? So far I've only found a Toyota specific launch but rather pay more and use on my other cars too. I got a bluedriver without looking into anything because all those raving reviews claiming it does so much. It didn't do much at all to me. I was hoping to be able to program an extra key and other functions but at a min read the transmission temp to be able to accurately change my fluid in the 2018 Camry. Bluedriver can't even read transmission temp on the car. They're offering to return it I think but I'm nervous. They contacted me based on my Google Play review and wondering how I'll know for sure I'm getting my $ back. I get nervous cause so many scammers these days.

Where can I buy the fill hose for transmission? ty
At WalMart. Made in USA, Hyper Tough brand. They put ‘em next to the oil.
June 10th.

I have a 2010 Honda Accord EXL V6, would the thinkdiag 2 work good with capabilities like live data info, active testing and everything else...etc?
Which scan tool is better in your opinion, Thinkdiag 2 or Xtool A30M?
Thanks
I checked out the ratings n it wasnt really good, maybe a few were ok but overall negative feedback. Thank You!!!👍

You try getting a smart key cut lately? Nobody wants to do the job without selling you a key, programming it to your car, and then cutting the key blank. You also need an adapter to program smart keys, so that feature isn’t 100% ready out of the box.
