Tyler please never doubt yourself! The fact that you have grabbed life by the horns and got this far on your epic adventure is testament to the incredible person you are.
Everyday you will grow a little stronger and be more confident in yourself and what you can achieve if you just let yourself go for it. Never be afraid to make mistakes because you learn from the mistakes and that is part of your growth.
I do so much enjoy your videos and have to very honest with you, I have a lot of financial commitments to reach every month and this is the way I justify not going forward and living life to the fullest like you. So for now I sit back and live vicariously through you.
All the very best to you, and so very proud of you for keeping going no matter what life throws at you. 🥇

When you decide to make your raised garden beds make sure to build a fence system around them to keep the deer and other wildlife out if you don’t you won’t have any food for yourself.

SUGGESTION nice vids. Just subbed and binged. If you have any mold get rid of it and whatever its on. Dont risk it. 2ndly.i know you dont have gutters but digging a sloping trench and putting rock in it along the perimeter of your home will work better than the mulch. Dont put wood mulch or shredded bark around your home as youll attract more ants, termites, bugs etc. Dig the trenches, line with weed fabric or textile fabric and roc all the way around the perimeter of your home. Starting higher in the back and lower as it goes around your house so it drains down your hill and drains and flows around your house when it rains and falls off the roof. Youre basically making a dry creekbed around your home with rock. You can still walk on it bc you level it out but the water will migrate through the rock when it rains, into the trench and follow the slope away from your house. Also, you can place your gardens in the area below where you direct the water flowing downhill from your shower and from around your house. Every bit of water getting to your garden helps

oh boy without a shadow of a doubt you will become a real pro at this lifestyle you have embarked on...I have gone thru a lot of comments and I agree with a lot of them....save whatever you can on that property, you will become more creative as time goes by and you will say dang I wish I did not throw that away....my goodness you are so young and have a lot of spunk in you to get this place into top shape...I did say at least 50 apple trees because when you said a lot I figured the deer's probably pooped out the seeds all around that beautiful property you own...It is yours and there is no time to look back just forward with love in your heart and smile on your face and be ready for whatever it is that needs to get done.....

At 12.14, are you standing on the remnants of a stone wall? And if so, are there any flat stones you could use as the ‘base’ for the timber under supports of the cabin? Really enjoying your adventure. And as for apples, I think cider. Or scrumpy. Rough cider. And dried apples. Glad you kept the metal bed frame. If it doesn’t work out for a wood store, then use it for climbing frame for veggies., inside a fence, I guess, if you have deer around.

    • @Janmification
      @Janmification ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, the two large hoops are buggy/wagon wheel rims. Which tells you the property is old. Predates the cabin. So, wonder what was there before?

I think during your search - you will find a strong determined person who is content with who he is and where he is in his surroundings!
Just be cautious when wandering around the woods of your property!! Make lots of noise and if Dobby is with you, have him on a leash. You don’t want to startle a bear! They are very active as they prepare to hibernate and always searching for food. They may see Dobby as a threat and try and attack or be very aggressive...... not to scare you.....but be woods wise! You look to be pretty remote. As a great chunk of the island is. Used to be one of my favourite things to do - head out into the woods with my dog and explore, never really giving wildlife a thought- older and I guess wiser now......moose would be another one that could be very dangerous coming across one.....

Those round things you found by the creek looks like the metal parts to a wagon wheel. It goes around the wheel to stop rocks and hard stuff from damaging the wood structure of the wagon wheel. I helped restore a couple wagon wheels when I was 17, my Dad was into restoring things way back then. (over 50 years ago) Just a thought ;)

Your vids showed up in my feed and I'm so much enjoying them! Your doing great and learning a bunch.
Yes, the round metal hoops are off wagon wheels. Vinegar is great to kill off ants. Look at what you have there before you trash it, might have a use. I have used bleach straight on mold with good success. A few cinder blocks under the cabin with the jack should do it. But make sure jack is good. Floor jacks are what they use here. Not hard to put in wood stove. Make sure stove is air tight and have an extra gasket for the winter. Use good pipe, whatever you can afford. You have to cart so much stuff in, I feel for you. For mice and other pests and ants, maybe look at planting peppermint or other greens to repeal. My Amish Neighbor told me red pepper flakes for ants works. It does.
Just wanting to give you kuddos, your doing great!

That's a great idea to use that metal bed frame for wood storage. I went back to the video, it says that it was from 3 weeks ago titked Clearing Out an AbandonedOff Grid Cabin, when you were cleaning the cabin and separating the "to keep and to burn" piles (2::22 14:38 time) The camera showed that the wall was damaged. I was thinking that if someone was trying to shoulder push the door, the wood frame could've been damage. I have to tell you, the changes you are making in your property are wonderful. Is hard work, I know, but that's your piece of paradise, your serenity place. Nothing wrong about talking to the ones we've lost. I do that all the time with my mom that passed in June 2017 and two brothers that passed in November 2017. Yes, 5 months after mom and just a little over 3 months, I lost a beloved nephew. It hurts, I missed them every day, but we have to keep on going. Don't let anything pull you down, otherwise you will have to answer to Dobby! 😊 Stay safe, stay strong, stay focused, and please keep making these amazing videos, dear heart! May God continue blessing in all kind of way!!

    1. replace the insulation, it will be lead to a lot less problems down the road vs using nasty chemicals you'll breathe in
    2. use the drywall from the inner walls you are removing for that insulation wall, save yourself some money (you probably already figured that one though)
    3. if you are storing garbage on site, separate your organics, flatten your cans into one pile, put your glass into another pile, reuse what you can before it ends up in the pile to rust. Remember glass jars are great for storing nails, screws, etc (The way it used to be done was to nail the lid up to the underside of a shelf and then screw the glass jar up., you've probably seen this before). As you mentioned, dig a hole for each pile and put a little fence around it.
    4. get your No Trespassing / Private Property signs up on the access road, and remember that anyone who comes along isn't intentionally invading your space they probably drove ATVs on the property for years without anyone saying anything to them
    5. Keep your wood pile off your porch unless you want to create a home for bugs, termites, ticks and snakes right next to your cabin wall and door.
    6. flagging tape on the trees to count was a great idea, I thought of it too the first time you mentioned the trees
    7. rather than endlessly spraying chemicals to get rid of ants, try vinegar/water
    8. mulch around the foundation, out from it about a metre, will help to keep ticks away from your cabin
    9. get the GPS coordinates for your property line and mark it out with tape and signs, this helps you in the future to remember where the line is and to discourage visitors
    10. you'll constantly be fighting to keep the grass growth cut down around your cabin, figure out what you definitely want short and let the outer fringes grow
great work so far, I just started following your channel today and I hope to see a lot more videos from the cabin in the future ~Kevin

I am one of the ones that found you in the last week. I am loving watching your journey! As far as the creek area I have a suggestion. Personally I would clear out the smaller younger ones and for sure the ones that look like they are already dead. The dead ones you can cut down and up for firewood you will for sure need this winter. The younger one down will let the older ones grow healthier/stronger. Plus it will open everything up visually and maybe hear the water from the cabin. I know the apple trees have been doing well naturally but now that you are there you can shape them to what you want/need by cutting off some of the ones that are hanging downward and in your pathways. All just suggestions. Definitely not trying to tell you what to do.

There is some stuff called. Killz. You paint on your walls to get rid of mildew and then you get paint to paint over it once the Killz has dried.

I love fix-up videos and I just found you on this journey! It looks like many honest people will support you along the way. My mom used to tell me, "Look for the good you'll find it!" And she was always right! It's awesome you think of talking to your grandmother about your life. We all need to remember the people who loved us and we have a deep connection with! You are stronger than you know! Take good care of yourself Tyler and your sweet Dobby! 🥰🤗

Ive watched all of these cabin videos this morning. Take that piping and as much of a pain in the rear its gonna be, dig a ditch and put them in it in some insulation and run them to the cabin with a pump and get you running water to the cabin. It can be done a couple of ways. Research and figure out what would work best for you.

Tyler don't beat yourself up on what you have achieved or not. What you have done in 5 weeks is phenomenal. At least your driving the bus and relizing your dreams, and healing yourself. Enjoy the drive. Ok here is a thought with what looks to be wooden barrel straps at the creek, the barrels, wapples and water maybe a old still site. I doubt it but let the mind wander. I know I mentioned it before but with that many apple trees there may be a source of revenue there.

Hey Tyler, just wanted to share a couple of ideas that my make your adventure better. Concerning the out house, you might give some thought to a style of outhouse called a moldering privy. Just do a little research and I believe you’ll appreciate this design. As for your heat source you it might take some effort but a rocket mass heater would make life a lot easier when cold weather hits. Just some thoughts. Good luck on your journey son, be safe and God speed.

Stovepipe is simple. Joints slip together. Use four sheet metal screws to secure each joint. If you want to move the stove near the wall, apply some noncombustible material to the wall and keep the stove at least 24 inches from the wall. If you decide to move it you will need 2 elbows. Most elbows are adjustable from 90° to 0° so you can make the angles you need. I would not recommend moving the stove with the current chimney location. Using elbows to move the stove would possible overheat the ceiling and risk a fire. Use dry hardwood for your fires. Dry wood produces much more heat and less creosote. Creosote causes chimney fires. Clean chimney at least once per year.

Hey get video! Dobby is so cute. About the mold- in my opinion as a Katrina survivor, the moldy insulation needs to come out. Maybe all the insulation in the cabin needs to come out. You will not be able to rehab that safely. The wood beneath the mold could be salvaged with the mold spray from Lowe’s but using regular bleach instead tends to scatter the mold spores and is not as effective. Nothing will work if you still have leaks or rotted wood. I would not sleep in the cabin or work in the cabin without a respirator as long as the mold is present. It is a real health hazard that will catch up with you. (Same goes for Dobby!) Take care!

Those apple trees will look amazing when they bloom in the spring! I would build a bench for under one of them, it will be like Heaven! That sink down by the creek will be perfect for cleaning veggies n apples from the garden, next to a potting bench near the cabin! 🩵

Apple cider, Apple juice, apple pie, apple sauce, you can water bath can a lot of those apples for the winter... Any large pot with a (even jar bands work as extra bottom) just so long as jars do not sit directly on the pot bottom.. and use nice clean jars with lids, Ball jars or Mason jars you choice pint or quart... fill jars with cooked apples or juice and add water or juice to 1" away of the top (add sugar, cinnamon or not), wipe top area for cleanliness, place lids on, then finger tight the bands , cover in large pot with 2" of water, place on cover and bring to boil ...boil at medium bubble for 20 minutes, turn off stove and let sit in canner another 15 minutes, then lift out and place on cloths on the counter. next morning check to make sure lids have sealed by pressing center of the top, should not move and , remove bands, wipe clean jars and mark them to be eaten within 2 years (1 year is best, but they do last longer) Keep in cool dark place.....free and yummy!

You could make a gravity fed water system using some clean barrels and the roof gutters . I saw it on a port protection episode , you might want to look that one up . I enjoy watching your videos , you're doing a great job . In your situation you have to go with whatever works .

For the hoses down by the creek, google "ram pump" I'd be willing the bet the dude used the creek to water his trees and stuff. It's super cheap, when the flow of the creek gets a little higher you can definitely use one to move that water up the hill for storage, active watering, whatever you want.
