Just run across this and I will say that this is going to be a beautiful model, especially if your going to that level of detail to actually make some of the rooms.
Great work! I've been building the kit for a couple months, and have been using these videos as a guide/inspiration. By coincidence, I just reached A deck myself. The one thing I am dreading the most is all of those KA handrails. Just the 6 that there were on B deck made me want to pull my hair out from frustration haha. So tiny, and so hard to glue neatly while balancing on its edge. Also one thing that helped me alot with the fact that the boat deck sat a bit proud is sanding off the top lip of the A deck bulkheads. Plus those bulkheads are very hard to sit flush when they aren't glued down. Notice that even in your video when you say that the deck is sticking up, those bulkheads are riding equally high above where they will eventually be glued down.
Hi, thanks. Yes I’m not looking forward to the handrails either. Absolute pain. One of those things that if they get fitted well they will look great, but I reckon if they are a bit wonky they will look a bit dodgey! You are correct the back section wasn’t sitting quite flush with the deck below it which rather exaggerated the boat decks elevation, but even when firmly in place the boat deck still sits almost exactly 1mm proud
@@TheModelBoatGuy Well I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all works out. And if you don't know what to do with all of that spare styrene, could I suggest marketing a line of "ModelBoatGuy's Accurate Titanic Boat Decks"?
Hi Rob! Great video as usual. I am finding you being light years ahead of my bumbling's very useful. Spotting even more errors and stuff to put right! I now have the heads up in advance of what I end up having to do. I will have massive amounts of issues to overcome with the Olympic but it's all part of the fun, but how much fun can I handle!! I am still chugging away at the shell plating, so many different sizes and shapes to do. There is very little mass production that I can do to speed things up. However it looks ok at the moment which is encouraging. Putting off the outer prop shaft modifications just until I have the perfect cunning plan. Just got some perfect scale 3D printed funnels which are excellent with fantastic rivet counter detail. (Model Monkey). Anyway you are doing a great job with problem solving and I will take account of the thinner deck idea as I am bound to run into that problem sooner or later! All good here. Apparently summer will be for three days in June this year! Stay safe. Regards JH ;-)
Hi Johnny, Glad you are finding solutions to problems. I have also benefitted from other peoples models so it seems to be a good technique to delay ones work! Will you be publicising any of your Olympic build? I’d be very interested to see how you over come the obstacles of working with a titanic model? Good to hear you’re getting the 3D printed funnels, I’m still flirting with the idea of getting them. I did set a budget for this model but that is being tested! Hope all is well, all the best Rob
@@TheModelBoatGuyHi Rob yes the 3D funnels are certainly advanced in detail and are so much better than the basic kit version. They are quite robust so could be okay for RC should you wish to go down that path. A considered purchase of course, like most things connected with this project! I didn't have a set budget for this model which has crept up quite a bit over the months! I wont be publicly displaying my efforts as I simply work too slowly for any of that. I do other stuff too. However, I will be putting together a photo build diary which I may release to a very few interested folks perhaps in emails! All good here at the moment. Regards JH ;-)
Hi, yes so you are correct in the video I didn’t fit the deck houses on A deck very well down, so they arnt very flush with the wooden decks they sit on. But even when they are the boat deck sits about 1mm too high, so by reducing the height of the boat deck piece from 2mm to 1mm largely solves the problem. This might add other issues later, like light bleed etc but for now it is working!
It's looking really good! One question: at 20:00 the expansion joint seems to run up to a doorway in the superstructure. I was thinking that it would run to a blank wall / gap instead, which would be covered by a leather gaitor. What have I missed?
Aah yes, good spot! I noticed this as I was editing and didn’t re film the clip. So the reason is because as yet nothing is glued down, and there are two pieces (B19 and B20) one for the port side corridor and one for the starboard, I had them swapped accidentally for this shoot so that’s why the expansion joint crosses a door. That said, there are some issues between the the scaledecks and the expansion joints on the boat deck where one crosses a window, which I haven’t come up with a solution for yet! Edit: from doing a bit of reading the issue on the boat deck looks like an issue with the trumpeter windows not scaledecks
How is it exactly that the thinner sheet of plastic solved your problem with height where the overall height of the buildings on the deck below never changed the thickness of the deck wouldn’t have been the problem or at least it didn’t look like it in the video it would’ve been the hight of everything below yes? In the video there was a large gap between the two decks bottom of the top piece and the top of the buildings it was resting on below so how did the thinner sheet make such a difference?
hello I just wanted to introduce myself to you my name is Rocky and I'm a standing member of all the Titanic groups on facebook, I noticed that Gene Davis was introducing you to the Titanic model China 3D prints 1/200- 1/350 group, so I also wanted to welcome you as well, I have a question concerning the expansion joint that you mentioned in your video, you said that the joints on the walls were leather......my question is are you going to be putting real leather on those joints to show where they are or what are you going to do for those, again welcome to all the Titanic facebook groups its a pleasure having you as a member, maybe you and I and talk on messenger sometime.
Hi, thanks for the welcome, they are really useful groups for research! Re the expansion joints, they were covered in leather yeah, it formed a slight convex shape to allow for expansion. My intention would be to put a small bit of plastic to represent that slight convex shape on the walls. Using a separate part also allow painting before install which I tend to find makes for a neater job. The tricky thing is the colour, I’m not sure if the leather was black or brown. Small issue but I’d like to try and get right if I can!
Great upload as always. How are you doing your Windows are you putting clear plastic behind the frames or you going to try some resin. I have been testing out some uv resin on some spare pe frames and they have been coming out quite good. Just need to make sure they set hard tho as they are easly scratched. Food for thought like your giving us 😀
Not sure yet. On the tiny windows on B deck I actually didn’t bother because they are just so small i found it practically impossible to tell. Larger windows further up, tricky. I need to do a bit of experimenting. I prefer Uv resin because it looks more like genuine panes of glass, but I don’t want it to refract the look of the interior too much. I’ll do a bit of testing and see!
@@TheModelBoatGuy I did find on my uv resin test that it magnifies a bit. It's easly scratched aswel. Apart from that it looks awsome. Cant wait to see what you come up with
It will be quite close for sure (stability wise). I have done some calcs and am reasonably confident that she will work but I need to be careful to minimise weight high up on the ship otherwise she will inevitably capsize, which as you say, not good!
I admire your tenacity when faced with a kit issue.. Looks great so far. The expansion joints looked perfect.
Doesn't matter what type of work you do on this kit, its all very impressive and always lovely to watch. Keep it up!
I'm so looking forward to seeing you complete this. Making your own boat deck to eliminate the problem...Brilliant! Never thought about doing that.
I've been following this for so long its so close i cant wait for it to be done

Wouldn't it be so much easier and authentic if the piece of plastic was just already a piece of real actual wood instead?
I feel this would sink which wouldn’t be good
