  • This is the forty-fourth in a series of videos I’m going to produce to document the building of my Trumpeter 1:200 model Titanic. In this episode I cover the following elements:
    - Assembling, painting, and fitting the main mast.
    - Solving several light bleed issues from the last episode.
    If you want to see more regular updates have a look at my Instagram page (same name as the channel). I post photos as I'm building there so you don't have to wait for the videos to be edited!
    List of parts used:

    If you're doing rigging, you could theoretically run a wire with the marconi lines to the foremast for the nav light

    I've been binging this series for two days. So inspiring and fascinating. I'm torn because now I really want to work on a big, detailed model like this, but on the other hand, I don't think I have the patience or steady hand required for something even one tenth of this.

      In fact it has the same scale (1:200) like the model in the video. So at least Lego said so.

      Yeah I saw that, it’s the same scale but I think really I’ll have to pass on it! Don’t have the space for 2 1:200 scale Titanics around my house 😛

    Could always use the wire for the navigation light on the foremast as one of the Marconi lines along the top, pretty sure it also ran back down to the ship around a third of the way down so there’s the way to complete the circuit

    Looking forward to you doing the rigging. That was one of the most interesting parts on the 1/400 Academy version I built a few years ago. I know from other peoples vids that the Trumpeter surprisingly doesn't include any rigging, which is actually fine, as I didn't use the rigging that came with the Academy version either, but I'm really anticipating seeing what you come up with for it. I'm sure it will be INSANELY time consuming, and look astounding. 😃

      Hi, yes I’m looking forward to rigging the ship to a point! It’s going to be tricky to work out how to keep decks removable whilst getting a decent amount of rigging on the ship.
      I doubt I’ll be able to get all the rigging but hopefully enough to give the right effect.

    • @Krommer1000
      @Krommer1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheModelBoatGuy - Ya, not having access to the decks will certainly make it challenging. I've seen some of the Trumpeter builds use stiff wire, rather than actual rigging like material, and some of those have worked out very well. That way, you don't need to worry about tensioning the rigging by actually running it under the deck. What ever you come up with I'm 100% sure it'll look fantastic.

    Hi Rob, I can imagine how frustrating the light problem is. Mine will be ok for the hull but the superstructure stuff will present some issues! I will be using fibre O for my crane lights and similar. Easier for me I guess as once the thing is together that will be it for me, job done. The masts look lethal. Watch your eyes on those whilst you are working close in on the deck details! Perhaps a blob of temporary blue tack stuck on the end will give a little protection. I intend to cut a thin slot up the back of the forward mast and embed a very fine fibre o .....well that's the plan!!! 😁. BTW hoping for a delivery this week so I may be getting back to you. Watch out for a comment! 😉 3c here now so plenty of modelling!! Great video on the light bleed solving. Regards JH

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Evening, yes I think fibre optics do just keep the light exactly where you want it, where as LEDs just spew it everywhere!
      The masts are mighty sharp, I am going to pop some of those foam balls on top of them as I will almost certainly damage something, be it myself or otherwise.
      Yes I think your mast idea is a bit better really, I have just bought some mighty fine enamelled copper wire and might use that, then use the actual mast as a return path for my mast head light, but not sure yet. As it’s such a thin wire the resistance will be rather large.
      Sounds intriguing on your delivery, ok I’ll await a message! It’s nippy here now too, and I am working on Christmas presents too so finding time for the model is challenging but hey ho! It’s too cold to do much outside.
      Keep well,
      Robbie

    Shame the mast sections are not ‘threaded’ to make perpendicularity a certainty rather than guessing at it 🤔

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree with that, I thought it was a wee bit curious. I mean just by applying pressure it’s quite easy to get the sections aligned but I agree a thread would make the entire structure a lot stronger and robust!

  • @polygonalmasonary
    @polygonalmasonary 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As there are only two purposeful masts this could also be a ‘mizzenmast’ as on sailing vessels the ‘main mast was always the middle mast and the aft or rear mast was called the ‘mizzenmast’ 🤔

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I had thought there was some sort of rule that the foremost last couldn’t be the mainmast? But this really isn’t my field so I will defer to you on this 😛

    Hi modelboatguy. started doing the led lighting on the kit and having mixed results but seems to be working. All the lights are woking so far. Just one question if you can advice me....in the instruction book for the lighting it says to glue and fix the welding points. Is there a special glue /adhesive i can use that wont interfere with the electric current and still hold the wires in place ? Tried looking at various sites but they are not really clear on this. Thanks in advance. Love the videos !

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there,
      I actually didn't create the interior on B deck, (at least not that far forward). The only interiors on B deck that I have done are:
      - Private promenades
      - Grand staircase (forward, I haven't done this yet)
      - A la carte restaurant
      - Café Parisien
      - Second class smoking room.
      - Second class staircase.
      I decided because you just can't see any interior detail in the forward areas because the windows are so small there wasn't really much point in doing it!

    Hi just planning my new trumpeter kit build is there a guide to the colour paints you have used in particular the forward deck light tan around the crane bases etc

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, if you look in the descriptions I tend to put the paints I have used in that episode in there.
      When I finish the model I think I will make a spreadsheet with paint details.
      I have researched these as well as I can but there are a few colours that might be a little inaccurate

    hi modelboat guy. just recieved my 1/200 scale titanic. One big issue with it .....no rigging!! how can a such detailed model have no provision for the rigging ? Any thoughts ? Really like your videos. Will be referring to them a lot !!!

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am going to be using an elasticated product for my rigging. Although to be clear, because of my need to access inside the hull I won’t be doing all the rigging, but will do some.
      The add on sets tend to add a good bit of provision for rigging. The KA set I’m using for example provides quite a few eyes and cleats to attach rigging into.
      Watch out for future episodes, I’m not far off starting rigging on some areas 🙂

      Thank you for the comment, the bit of kit is called a PE bender. I mean they are ok, with some of the parts I find the PE is so small it’s easier to use tweezers but for the bigger bits like the ladders they are great.

    • @TheModelBoatGuy

      Hi there, yes once the build is finished this will make a little more sense. There is a square box section that joins to the mast at this point which connects to the boat deck. I’m not certain what it was for yet but I suspect it might be a cable trunking or something to that effect

    if titanic had a searchlight similar to anti aircraft ,on its forward deck the disaster could have been averted

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect it would still have happened. Maybe not to the titanic but I think the industry at that point was sleepwalking towards a disaster. Not enough lifeboats on most ships, bizarre logic about moving quickly through ice fields to put danger behind as quickly as possible!
      There’s a good video on TH-cam about whether a search light or binoculars would actually have helped, which seems to suggest they wouldn’t but it’s an interesting point

      Don’t be silly matey. This isn’t a quick build for sure. I mean I’ve been going on mine for two years now!
      I think for a model of this size you have to get pleasure from the building process though. I think anyone will struggle if your enjoyment comes from the finished result, because that will take ages! So you have to find pleasure and satisfaction from each little step of the build. And if you can do that you’ll be fine. Just little bits every so often.
      Where are you up to with yours now??

      Decking and lighting. Studying the parts and making sure I don't mess up. It's very overwhelming for me..

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@THiSGuYJeFFeRY I do understand that. It’s overwhelming when you look at the model as a whole. And it’s overwhelming for anyone not just a new modeller.
      The thing I do to cope with that is to break it down into little bits. Today I’m going to do xyz. Nothing too big, the rest of the model can stay in a cupboard out the way so you can’t see it and that helps me.
      I focussed on doing the forward well deck, and that took a few weeks. Then the forecastle etc, another few months, etc.
      For what it’s worth from your videos I think you’ve made a cracking start. There’s no rush, and there’s no issue with taking a break either!

      The issue I’m finding is they arnt white strong enough. There will be a way somehow but finding it is tricky! I think for some areas where there will always be gaps the way to go is to put a false floor underneath, that way light never has a chance to get there
