    Something I did to stay warm while hanging in the winter was I found an electric 12v blanket at a flee market and a outside lounge cushion. I use a $1 space blanket as a underquilt which hangs at about 1inch below my hammock. I know that it sounds silly but for about $25 I have a winter setup which has aloud me to sleep down to around a zero temperature that includes the wind chill. Anything colder than that my battery pack wont last the night. Found that out the hard way lol. Although I have upgraded to the Amok with a Big Agnes Q-core insulated pad. With that setup and my winter bag I haven't found my limit. Sorry for the rambling I just wanted to share that it can be done cheaply. God bless and stay safe . ( Water in any form and electricity is not conducive to long life. For those who don't know and may want to try this)

    This video is so timely for me. I just got a full length Klymit none insulated pad. I hammock camp and use a 30 degree under quilt, a 20 degree top quilt. These with the pad Is so comfortable. I also use a sleeping bag liner to go over my pad along with the top quilt strap for the pad, this keeps the pad so comfortable. The pad doesn't slide around and I don't have heel pressure or calf ridge any more. I lay so much flatter. I've been sleeping in my hammock for the past 5 days, in the house and two days of camping. I'm enjoying this set up a lot.

      @@shugemery I tried the pad but got cold. The problem is, the underquilt will hold the heat of the body in but with a pad you are insulated from the underquilt so it wont hold the body heat.I tried it again without the pad and was warm as toast. This was done with the same temps. My pad was non insulated so the air was colder in the pad.

    Hey Shug. I have a silicone treated (on the backside) reindeer skin. I use it to reenforce my UQs in various temperatures. It is a reactor. I recommend you try it. The silicone on the backside makes it more water resistant from the underside, and as an added bonus in a hammock it acts as an anti slide. Keep it secure in sector seven , buddy!

    Great video, Shug! Just got back from 2 days and 2 hours on the Ozark Higlands Trail crushing 18 miles of the worst that the Ozarks had to offer. This video really hits home because of the second night on the trail. We went from 75 degrees one night to 40 degrees the next and a wind that was gusting to 25 mph. It gusted so hard that it blew my hammock and got me rocking even with the rain fly blocking that side! I said all of that to say this. I was prepared. I had purchased a 0 degree sleeping bag/under quilt that has the versatility to be 3 things in one. A top "blanket", a sleeping bag, and an under quilt. I was using a 15 degree under quilt but the wind was blowing hard enough that I was losing the insulation power. I got up, zipped my "blanket" into a rectangular sleeping bag and went back for that needed rest. Your example of preparedness and versatility has been priceless. We talk about you all of the time on the trail and really look forward to your videos. We even do the early (EARLY) thing too. Haha! Keep on trekking, Shug!! Whooooooo buddy! (Which we said every time we scaled an incline.)

    Thanks Shug - after looking at your last video I was thinking about those questions as I am new to brrr weather hammocking. So I put up the hammock in the garage. Did my under and over quilts AND added my pad in my hammock. I knew I should be good to 35/40 but it was gonna get that 30 mark or lower so wanted to find out. I stayed warm. I stayed asleep. I stayed HAPPY - don't have to buy any more gear right now to do some brr camping! AND I figure with my mummy bag - which I didn't use but could use as another underquilt/overquilt or even as a 'sleeping bag' I could get even lower. So thanks for verifying and really do enjoy you expertise on this stuff.

    Even though I have not done cold weather hammock camping . I have done a lot of cold weather tent camping . I find for the weight . A window Sun reflective screen , as one puts in their front window of a car , works great to reflect heat and add warm & R value . Gubs ain't gonna try and warm up that way . Would be good bye beard at the minimum ! Now for some IMPORTANT shit ... Where is CAPPY ??? Another nice one Mr E .. gb

    Another perfectly timed video! Got to watch it hangin' in me 'ammock at camp again!! I'm still hoping for colder weather to come down to Texas soon. I had to have my .55 ounce phone fan blowing on me while I watched this. If the skeeters weren't so bad I'd pop my Wooki off to the side, but the danged ole skeeters would feast on me through my permethrin treated hammock. The permethrin certainly helps, but I must have really tasty blood since so many of them choose me as their last meal. Maybe I should feel honored? I can't wait for a few 30°F nights so the skeeters mellow out some.
    Thanks for teaching me about the Wooki, which led me to the Eldorado, and I definitely appreciate the permethrin advice - It's been a game-changer. The skeeters still annoy me, but they don't ruin trips anymore.

    For the last week I have been sleeping outside in a Warbonnet RidgeRunner Bridge hammock. I have the double layer bottom and I am using a Klymit 30" wide mattress, (R 4.4) . You don't need or want much air in the mattress. I am also sleeping in a -20 degree sleeping bag. It is synthetic insulation so does not compress under me as much as Down would. as an option I am also considering cutting up a wool blanket to the shape of the hammock and possibly sewing some radiant reflective material to it, or between two layers of blanket. I camp where there are no trees so the hammock will becomes a Bivy bag to keep bugs out. Having something under me that compresses like an under quilt may not work.

      Reflectix is great especially when first figuring to insulate a hammock.

  • @better.better
    @better.better 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    sounds correct to me, although, you didn't discuss the difference between reflective vs insulatve... for example, a reflective emergency blanket won't prevent conductive great transfer from your skin through the blanket to the outside air. reflectors are best used away from your skin. for example if you look at the instructions on reflectix for use in radiant floor heating, you're supposed to staple it at least 2 inches below the tubing in each bay between the floor joists. when I use it in my hammock I put it underneath my under-quilt with enough slack so that after I get out the condensation can dry. and when it's cold enough that the condensation freezes I can take the whole reflectex pad out and knock the ice off

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wanted to keep it simple. Maybe a subject for anther video.
      The question a lot lately was the UQ and add a pad subject so that is what I tried to stay on.
      Reflectix always kept me warm at the expense of moisture. Warm but damp.

Still haven't tried my mylar blanket underneath yet, but that's the idea with that as well. Especially to get that gap I need with mylar.
