    Another great vid! Here's what I did to get my sweet spot... sounds a lil crazy but it worked well since I was alone and didn't want to keep getting in / out and re-tying the ridge line. I placed two small carbiners on the continuous loops. Then hooked a ratcheting "Motorcycle strap" (Cargo strap) to the carabiners. I layed in the hammock and just tightened it a click at a time until I found my spot, them marked it on the Amsteel.

    My Dear Shug,
    I follow you and your videos for quite some time now. And I felt ya right in the beginning of this video, when you mentioned that you talked about ridgelines already (I watched, liked, an LOVED that video as well as this one).
    But I realy want to thank you for this special video, because you reminded me of thaat 83% starting point to find the sweetspot.
    So tihs is what I'm doing with my freetime tomorrow in this Covid19-Sh*t we're in (jepp, back here in germany as well as in the US of A), I'll take my hammocks out to my backyard and give them a ridgeline made of paracord, since I have pleanty of that, with the knots you recommended. And I'll set my homemade (and all-time-favorite one) up first to find my sweetspot and konw the percentage of the lenght of the hammock.
    So, my (wohoooo) buddy, thank you for reminding me of the important basics of hamocking, and very king regards from germany,
    Yours Sascha

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe that would work. I have never tried to do what you are asking so I can't say for sure. But more than likely will work to a degree for the hammock.
      The tarp will work but prepare for tarp sag.

    I noticed you could bend your Ridgeline like 45 degrees maybe? When I hang my chameleon my, non-adjustable, ridgeline is tight and won't bend while I'm in it. Does that mean the suspension is too tight or something else? Is it ok if it's tight or will something maybe break? I'm brand new to hammock camping and it feels like there's a lot to learn coming from the ease of tent set-up where it's readily apparent if you set the tent up right or not.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try sliding your suspension up the tree more. Usually loosens the ridgeline. I have had mine too tight many a time and it has never broken. Hammocks do have a learning curve. Worth it for me for the good sleep I get.

  • @DannyB-cs9vx
    @DannyB-cs9vx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My Hennessy Leaf, (basic hammock, no screen), came with a sewn in ridge line. I am thinking about cutting it somewhere near one end and tying a figure 8 knot to both cut ends. I can then use a separate line between the two for adjustment. In my case I would like to try a bit longer than stock.
    One thing I found is placing something under my knees makes the lay more comfortable. Inflatable pillow, Sack of clothes, Waterproof bag inflated, whatever. Laying in a end gathered hammock makes my knees over extend. When in bed at home even laying on my back, my knees are bent a bit. I never heard anyone suggest this, so maybe give it a try and see what you think.

    So, if the ridgeline is too tight where you can't turn it 90° when loaded, does that mean the suspension is too tight or what? Just trying to figure out where to start troubleshooting. Thanks!

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty right. Usually the fix is sliding the suspension higher up the tree. Believe me..sometimes mine is too tight or too loose on a trip. Won't be perfect everytime.

    Hey Shug thanks for all the great videos. On ridge line lengths what do look or feel for on adjustment how do you know you have it in the sweet spot. Is it when you bend it and its not to tight or to loose i am new to hammocks and dont fell any difference in the lay just how tight or loose the ridge line gets the 83% for the hammock i have is 104 inches and i have tried all the way to 90 inches not sure what better any suggestions i would be very great full thanks

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sweet spot is what feels good to you. Don't get to caught up on exact ridgeline lengths. Depending on tree spacing...sometimes the ridgeline is tighter of looser. If too tight then just slide your suspension up the tree.

    When I first got my Warbonnet Eldorado I would sometimes have calf-ridge and sometimes not. I think I eventually learned that setting my ridgeline too tight was the cause of the calf-ridge, meaning my ridgeline was too long -- when I didn't get calf-ridge the line was WAY too slack. I temporarily used your carabiner method of shortening the ridgeline (the one you use to shorten the ridgeline to keep it out of your face in bench-seat mode). After I got a good and consistent lay with no calf-ridge I took a measurement and made a new shorter ridgeline out of 1.75mm Zing-It (since there's a rule of a slightly slack ridgeline I knew the heavier Amsteel that comes stock was overkill). I made four soft-shackles out of the original ridgeline, two of which I wear as bracelets all the time now! The carabiner method of taking up excess line length worked great for finding my ideal ridgeline length.
    For anyone that reads this and doesn't know the carabiner trick I'm talking about, you just loop the line around the backbone of a carabiner and through the gate. Each loop around the carabiner takes up about an inch if you use what I would call a 'normal' hammocking carabiner. It's very easy to undo and adjust.
