    Incubator Underquilt....www.hammockgear...
I have been wanting to do a video on how to adjust and fit a full length Hammockgear Incubator underquilt. So, I finally got a custom one made so now I can show. It pains me when folks struggle to get the proper fit on a UQ.
Hammock camping has a lot of moving pieces and insulation underneath is where most folks fail.
My opinion is that UQs are the most difficult part of a hammock system for most people.
Hope this gives some helpful insight.

Hi Shug, just wanted to say how invaluable your video was to a newbie like me. I was struggling with my underquilt the first night of hammock camping and your video taught me so much in 10 minutes. Warmness galore!

Took my 40F incubator down to 29F this past weekend and was a-ok. Just ordered a 0F incubator and can't wait for the cooler temps. Great video and great stuff from HG. Also have their down pillow for my head and neck. Love it!

Shug I wanted to thank you for inspiring this old guy, 56yo, for getting out and off the couch and hike the Linville gorge with my Marine son. You and hickory have truly been such a inspiration I can't thank you enough. You have taught me so much on ur videos and converted me from tents to hammocks. Again thank you both and God bless.

Hey Shug , been a fan for years . Just wanted to thank you for going over the incubator adjustment. Been hammocking up here in the far northeast sector (not sure on the number) . Hanging the other day and notice my uq was not up to my expectations . Quick watch with you and bingo !
    Noticeable difference immediately .. thanks.

Just picked up my Econ incubator and burrow with sewn foot box off the front step! Got them both in 20 and had them overstuffed by 2 ounces. I knew just the video to watch when I was a little confused by the primary and secondary suspension. You cleared it right up for me. Thanks for that!
Even though it’s the Econ models, the material quality and craftsmanship is still outstanding. I have 0 regrets about spending the $400+ on the set. I found ONE feather when I pulled them out of the box. Only one, single, downy little feather. Barely 1/4” long. Outstanding. And there is no bad smell like I’ve seen some people complain of with some other down gear.
We’re starting to come in to warmer weather here in Virginia, but it will still be nice on the cooler nights we still have this time of year. I told my wife she can have the bed to herself this weekend cause I gotta try these bad boys out!!
Now off to re-watch your video on storing your down gear! I think you have one or two of those anyway.

Thank you Shug!!! Did tons of prepping for w/e in Jones Gap, SC and you had so many helpful videos, even back to 2007! My 20° HG quilts were excellent. 31° and gusty high winds to 25 mph first night was comfy with 1 layer and hat. Second night 24° but only single digit wind left me barefoot, no hat, and open TQ. HG stock quilts exceeded my expectations - thanks to your help with proper set up with all the gear in a hammock system!!! Now looking to do Shortoff in Linville Gorge; researching hammock or tent for that beauty. All the best for your days Shug!!!!

Great Video Shug. Love your work! I have been using the Phoenix underquilts, most often the 40 F and not over tightening the ends is a really big deal. I froze at 45 F with my 20 F quilt and then learned how to adjust. Took my 40 F quilts down to almost 30 F and was toasty!

Well, your video completely fixed the problems I've been having adjusting my underquilt. My primary suspension hadn't been attached to the biners, and I honestly hadn't known what to do with this apparently random loose loop of shock cord. I'd been treating (what I now know is) the secondary suspension as the primary suspension, which sort of worked after a fashion except that I couldn't adjust it so that it fit well - either my shoulders or my feet were always cold - one end of me or the other always popped off the edge of the quilt, and if I tried to pull it up/down, the other end would get cold. Given that I'm 5'5", it seemed ridiculous that I couldn't seem to cover all of me with the underquilt. Simply clipping the primary suspension to the biners and then using the secondary suspension to make fine adjustments completely solved the issue. Thank you so much! I'd been regretting my choice of switching from a bridge hammock to a gathered-end, because I couldn't seem to have a comfortable night. It seems completely obvious now, but up until an hour ago it had been a frustrating mystery.

I am guessing that I will watch this video several times in the time forward :) I'd like to thank you for your great spirit and humour in addition to all the knowledge you provide us all with. I think we all need it in these strange times. I have been going back and forth on an underquilt, and your superiorgear video threw me of for a while, but after some thinking I decided to go for the hammockgear instead. I contacted them in relation to a couple of questions I had about overfill and such, and the swiftness and service they provided in their answer resulted in an order for two economy incubator 10F for me and my wife. Again, thanks, and greetings from Norway :)

I started backpacking 3 years ago and my first tent was a hammock. I’m so glad i took that chance because it’s luxury. I’ve been in friends tents and they’ve been ehhh. Finally got my first under quilt. It’s the Econ short because I’m 5 feet short so I don’t see a reason for the longer one. I’m hopping it all works out. I really love backpacking, everyone is just so generous to a stranger. During one of my trips in May i was out there and another group showed up and one had a hammock but he had the long one. He let me try it for that night and he used my foam pad. Being a poor college kid, it was nice to test before buying.

I watch a lot of TH-cam videos, (mostly makeup, I have to admit.)
    You make EXCELLENT videos.
You put the "ham" into hammocking! (And "mock" 😉.)
I'm planning a 100 day backpacking trip and I have been looking into hammocking on the cheap. Hoping to get a light system together for under $200. Purchased some down feathers and took apart an old sleeping bag. Going to reuse the fabric, baffle and stuff it for a top quilt. This video really helped me with the concept of what an underquilt needs to do. That's the next project, so thanks!

Yeh 20 degree best all round eh....I am on same latitude as you but on other side of the Great Lakes, so same temperature fluctuations , winter weather and have been toiling with the choices i.e... 20 or 10 vs zero and just ordered an HG Ecubator Zero without any bells and whistles yesterday rather than fooling around with overstuffing of the twenty or ten etc and fingers cross that I can vent without much trouble in warmer temperatures. Realistically at 69 years young , not likely to be out hammocking below the zero temperature In any event but never know with weather in fall Ie hunting or just to get the old folks whispering about the crazy old bastard across the street. Thanks for hints, overview, easy to watch presentations you provide the hammock community as really helps reduce the learning curve. You and others who own these things has helped influence my decision. Worst case scenario if too warm for my use, I can a lighter Phoenix in addition. Keep them tips coming as never to old to teach an old dog new tricks. Cheers ..

Been snug as a bug to -4C/25F and could have been significantly colder I figure, thanks to the overstuffing. I have had many "high-end" down bags and garments and my Hammock gear products puts them all to shame. I only wish I had purchased from HG back in 1967 when I began backpacking yet I believe they had not been born yet. . It is VERY good stuff. I’m late to the game, but thanks so much for this video. I’m new to the hammock world. I got the Wanderlust kit from HG and took it out for the first time this wknd. I struggled the first night. Turns out I didn’t have that primary suspension connected. Night two was much better. Primary suspension in place and I stayed warm. After that, my problem was when I tried to lie at an angle I kept slipping out of my underquilt. Can’t figure out what I was doing wrong.

To me, his video said "adjusting", and that's what I wanted to see. For pack sizes, he absolutely does videos that show different gear and how it packs down, how much it weighs, etc. You have to be careful what you put in each video or the video becomes too long. You wanted weights and sizes, the next guy wanted details on the fabrics, the next guy wants to discuss baffles, next wants to discuss the different types of insulation, next wants to cover temperatures for different climates, etc, etc. That's why you put a descriptive title on a video, and I think there was no confusion as to what was in this. Overall if you want to see a video dedicated to weights and sizes, I would recommend that on a persons main channel or email them. Some channels even have a bucket just for comments and suggestions.Perhaps a format, you would suggest for Shug is that he does a review of this under quilt and top quilt. A review would have specs and details such you are requesting. But really, what Shug does better than anyone in my opinion, is to cover the usage, help you weigh the pro's and con's, help you get more enjoyment from hammocking, oh and every once in awhile he's mildly entertaining LOL....All clear in sector 7

Thanks for the vid Mr. Shug! The "King of snooze" approves haha. I finally made the switch from a ridge runner to a Chamaeleon. Interesting that some people think a bridge hammock is better for side sleepers. That's why I purchased The RR in the first place. Definitely not in my case. I hooked up my new hammock gear incubator on my chameleon for the first time today. It's really not that tough. Thanks primarily for your videos I had the concepts, which is what it's all about. It's not rocket surgeon stuff 🤗😜 carry-on wayward son 🤘

Shuuuuuuuuuug! Nice video...I plan on in the next year purchasing a zero degree full length UQ...am circling the wagons a bit considering options...I bought in the fall a "3 season wooki" from warbonnett and my initial backyard testing has been very promising...this is I think a similar design to the "snug fit" by ed speer in ways as well as sheltowee's "intregrated hammock"...the attachment of the head and foot end of the quilt as a sort of continuous extension or as a "2nd hammock" pretty much seems to me so far to be a wonderful design..there is no issue with how you go about cinching up the head and foot ends...
I just have yet to find time to get out and do a TRIP in my new quilt (tentative overnight trip planned for 2nd weekend in Jan)...so frustrating...well...at least I can sit around in my underwear on the couch and watch your trips shug....vicarious breeeeakfast from the hammock.
    Happy Trails!!

Shug, I'm a hammock newbie. Backpacker for life. Santa's bringing me an ENO doublenest, and 2 costco quilts I'm going to DIY into a modular top/bottom quilt combo. I've noticed most experienced guys like you don't use much ENO. Something I should know? Best I can tell they make some good stuff. Just not many bug net options, tho. I'll DIY that before summer hits. Just wondered why you use the brands you do. Cause we all know not to do what you do... at least when putting a stove on our heads...

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

ENOs are just fine. Maybe on the heavy side but I just don't own one as I prefer hammocks from cottage industry guys. Enjoy the comfort quest.

My Hennessey hammock has the bug net sewn to one side, plus I like using its asymmetrical guy line widening anchor points. Both of those features seem to be making it even more difficult for this hammocking n00b to get the UQ situated snug as a Shug in a rug. (And feeling like I should've shopped around to other hammock and underquilt makers more before buying my first setup, which cost me about $700 - significantly more than I spent on the Marmot 2.5p tent and 15 degree F XL XW bag setup I've been loving for a full decade.) So far, of all the tutorial vids I've been watching, yours has been the most enjoyable and educational to watch, so thank you! Do you think your lil' suggestion of using an extra piece of shock cord to wrap around under my quilt and over my ridgeline will solve this problem?

OK shug preference time. if you had to choose 1 under quilt for cold weather hanging would it be the Loco Libre that you have, or this one. if both where set to the same temp rating ? I'm finally going to order one for myself and both makers make great quilts from reviews and such that I've seen.

    • @shugemery

If it does then dont use them. I really never use tie outs other than Warbonnet bugnet but that does not interfere with UQ. All UQs are cut a wee different.

  • @CC-pi6gm

Many do it, so I read. Should be fine. Not a side sleeper myself. Best call Hammockgear and talk to them about though if really interested.
