Tarp guy here. I have setup cheap tents covered by a cheap, large, rectangular tarp tied at diagonal corners, easy peasy…for years…no leaks, plenty of porch room when the rain comes. I’ve even parked the truck under the same large tarp. Thanks from…east Tennessee.
Back in the day when my kids were little our outfit included two 16' x 22' tarps: one over our cabin tent, and the other over our campsite "living area" including the picnic table. Often there was room to use half of that tarp as a carport. Many an occasion presented itself when poorly prepared campground neighbors took refuge under our tarps during intense downpours.
This should be the future of tents. Using a tarp as your fly is the easiest way to prevent leaks or to fix them. Look at the bonuses, tents sold with attachment points for a tarp/pole and with no fly would be cheaper, you would be confident of staying dry, you would have a LARGE vestibule/porch. Companies would start making tent based tarps, a buy once cry once item. The only downside I see is extra weight versus a factory fly. Imagine a defender tarp on all of your tents...even the WORST leaky tent would be usable.
If you're out in the sun in the summer, a tarp protects the fabric and makes the tent stay a lot cooler. Something I noticed on some Australian tents is there's usually a tent on top of the tent, just to keep the sun off, with air able to pass freely between the shade tarp and the tent, below. One of the things "wrong" about tent market is all the backpackers wanting to keep the weight down so they can carry the darn thing! Then there are families with kids on a tight budget who want low prices. Most guys like me just want something sturdy that will last. $1000 is no big deal if it'll be around for many years to come.
I stayed in a different kind of two layered tent in the hot desert. After 11 days when it was time to leave I was removing the tent pegs and when it collapsed I heard that unmistakable loud hissing noise of a sand viper angered by the disturbance. It slithered away and I thanked my stars that I was safe all the time I spent in the tent.
There are Tons of Japanese camping vids on youtube. And EVERY TIME I watch one I think...They have some of the coolest camping gear I have Ever seen. So different from our gear.
I do motorcycle camping and have spent years trying to find the holy grail of a tent and every tent has fallen short in some way. I've been looking for a tent that stores compact, easy to setup and tare down, breathable in hot climates and water proof. It's been so frustrating watching your videos and you show a new tent that looks perfect (Instant Pop up for example) but then has major problems (extremely hot, leaks, expensive or small). I just wanted to raise awareness for the small group of motorcycle campers and hope you keep us in the back of your mind when picking tents to review. I'm currently using is the Sierra clip flashlight 2. Keep up the great work
I’m also looking for a perfect moto camping tent but for two people on two bikes. I think it needs two doors and two vestibules but pack small and be light. Maybe a three person. Closest tent on paper that works is a Big Agnes copper spur UL3 bike packing tent but haven’t bought it yet as I’m still researching what else there is. It’s a lot of money.
I recommend the Mountain Hardwear "Aspect 3". Fits 2 people comfortably with a vestibule on either side to keep gear out of the elements. Only 4lbs, sets up fast & packs small. Love it. Good luck.
Since this obviously isn't a backpacking tent, I'd say calling it a 1 person tent is accurate. If you're car camping with this tent, you're going to be bringing along more creature comfort items than you would while backpacking, necessitating the need for more room. Plus, you're going to want more room overall to change clothes, get out of any rain that rolls through, etc. It's not uncommon to see 2 people at a campground using a 4-6 person tent. If weights and size aren't a concern, why not go bigger.
Yeah, this tent is far too heavy for anything other then car camping. A light tent plus a tarp makes for light weight solution that can also be cheap as you can get some cheap light tents, but they tend to be sensitive to extreme weather, but a tarp solves that problem.
Yep. This is featured in most desert survival training vids and manuals - I've been told about 1ft/30cm between layers is optimal for this. Air force personal have been taught this shelter technique since WW2 - Some of the WW2 training vids on youtube show these shelter types in action made out of parachute silk. 👍
This tent is about £180 in the UK in two colours brown or Ivory. Thanks for the video I love out of the normal tents which are actually good and not gimmicky.
I feel like you could get a better deal with a similar setup by picking up a killer aquaquest tarp and a onetigris bug net. The whole doors and ceiling thing on the inner is really nice to see though!
The thing is that the materials are of a much higher denier so it's much more unlikely to puncture or rip, which brings both the weight and price up, but may also seem like overkill.
@mytreesloth Glad it works for you. For me as a retired person that raised my kids in Scouts and camping. Now with grandchildren on the same path. I've collected enough gear to last. Enjoy your new tent post a video maybe I'll give it a thumbs up 👍
“You won’t have seen anything like this before”, except when luke reviewed this many years ago. Still a lovely tent tarp combo and I have fancied owning this since I saw it reviewed last time but I normally camp with my wife so not really appropriate for my needs currently.
Glad you have all dimensions, weight, and price. This a design I've been working on using mil surp 2 man USMC tent with dual doors and small vestibules,an undetermined large tarp, and tent poles, appropriate guys and ties. Watch your videos often. Good work.

For that price I can add another cool piece of gear that my camping buddies don’t have . They’ll be drooling at the next camp out . I think my dog will like all the shade !
BRILLIANT! Absolutely brilliant. Can be just a tarp, just a tent, or a complete package. Tons of room for gear and living outside, plenty of room inside. No need for a huge tent. And provides the tarp you would normally have to set up separately. Really great thinking and execution. 👍👍
Luke, im watching you videos for almostt 5 years now and I really want to share love to your awesome work. I don't know how but you manage it to create some awesome videos with atmosphere and great professionally and credibility
Snow Peak tarps are the closest thing to the vintage MSR Parawing 19' I own. The MSR Parawing is based on the Moss Parawing as MSR bought Moss 20+yrs ago. Some of the biggest MSR and Moss collectors are Japanese. The MSR and Moss tarps were nylon, and the Snow Peak tarps are polyester. Moss tarps were 70d nylon, and my MSR is 210d nylon, the strongest tarp I have ever seen
Always love your videos. I may be one of the few who watches japanese camping videos. Not only have I seen this tent but this is just the tip of the iceberg for the crazy setups they have. They take camping (glamping) to a whole new level. I'd love to see you get your hands on some more jdm tent setups
Oh golly gee whiz! What a unique idea!! Putting a tarp over your tent!!! No leaks, a nice vestibule over the entrance, great ventilation!! Shade! Come on. Viewers have asked for years why Luke doesn't just put a tarp over even a cheap leaking tent. I ve submitted multiple comments about this. Geez.
I have had a similar setup for years. A Eureka! Spitfire 2.5 and 12' or 16' Noah's tarp. An advantage of this is the ability to use the tent without the tarp if desired. I salvaged the front pole from an old canvas wall tent that a neighbor had thrown out. Finding durable, tall adjustable tent/tarp poles that are reasonably priced has been difficult for me.
Luke … My friend, EXCELLENT review. Hit all the points and called it correct. That is why I both enjoy your channel and TRUST your judgment!!! Please send Susie my warmest regards!!! Until your next video and beyond, me and mine wish you and yours all things great and good; God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Atascocita (Houston), Texas. ✝️🎣👨🌾🦌🙏
I love Snow Peak! I’ve got the amenity dome medium and the mesh shelter and some other bits and pieces and they are all bomb proof. I recently had the dome out on a very windy cliff top camp and it was the only tent left standing. All others had to bail, or were broken.
If it was $120 - $140 cheaper. I love the design especially the inner with it's roominess. But my favorite part was the tarp arrangement. Very cool! Another home run! Thanks Luke 😎
The inner reminds my of my Eureka Timberline 2. It also has that Taffeta material across the top, and with the rain fly installed I don't have condensation inside. As a matter of fact, I'll dry my towel on a rope attached across the inside of the top, even if it's raining. I've used that style now for at least 30 years. It's smaller than this one, but that's because I'm always on my motorcycle, and packing lite is important.
what a cool and interesting tent! Yup seems like a really nice 'Drem Tent" for an SO and pet. And a nice little porch for cooking a bit, shade, and to just chill with a chair. Awee man! haha Good travels everyone!
What a great review! I'm just going to add one consideration.... Space. Those poles are what, 20 feet apart. Can't drop that in a closed space. I love the design tho!
I’m slightly obsessed with Japanese craftsmanship and culture, but, I set up a decent tarp over any tent, can be super cheap, makes for a bomb proof setup and I’ve used it in Arizona monsoons multiple times with perfect results, I have that gold armor 10x12 tarp from Amazon, price has gone up but it’s less than $40, a cheap rain fly will handle anything that blows in or even if your tarp develops drips, I always give my stuff a silicone spray and check it out with a hose but… Save your money, put a tarp over your cheap tent, take the rain fly off for ventilation and you’re still covered, boom!
Condescensation is usually the problem in winter. I like how this works. Plus enough room under the ( porch for a small stove of sorts ) wouldn't try a fire under there. Just saying.
I don't think saying Snow Peak is unknown in the U.S. is accurate. Their cookware and stoves are pretty ubiquitous premium products at retailers and online. It would be more appropriate to say anything else they make is relatively unknown.
Doesn't offer much above what I already use with the OneTigris net inner I have, plus the Aqua tarp and 2 Green Elephant poles, which in total maybe cost $180USD when I got all of it. Biggest thing this offers is sealable door flaps, but If I broke down and just carried another 6x6 tarp to act as a wind break, or even my poncho, I should be fine from misting rain. Does look really nice though and I like how it's a complete system, but, just not enough to replace what I have.
Everything from Snow Peak is top quality! A little 'Boujee' for some but a cornerstone brandname in the world of 'Glamping'. Their Large size Takibi fire pit and grill is considered a 'must have' for all serious Glampers and the titanium cups are something of a status symbol.
I have a 750 mm titanium cup and a solo cookset made by Snow Peak. Their titanium cookware is innovative and meticulously manufactured. I like a cookpot with a flat bottom that I can fry and pop corn in, and, for that, I had to go to Evernew. They use the thinnest titanium of any company that I am aware of. It's stupid light!
Or just buy a $50 mesh tent and a quality $100 tarp and some lightweight poles. Any mesh tent of your choosing and any tarp of choice, customised too for half the price.
At this point, it's really just for people who want an all in one system with a single purchase and that specific look. A good tarp will always be technically better and more versatile, but not necessarily as streamlined. To make it more worthwhile, they should have added multiple configurations of setting up the tarp, so for example, you could use it as a more domed and closer outer shell to have an extra layer of insulation around the tent, making it less open and more compact. In the end, all it really is, is a complex tarp that can only be setup in a specific way. They could have made the tarp more like how a hoodie has strings to tighten the hood. They could have designed it with the same principles, allowing you to tighten the tarp more around the tent with a pull string if you wanted that configuration, giving the possibility for a nice second layer around the tent, and could have also been utilized to make the tent easier to setup, since the pull string would allow you to not have to set it up so specifically, you could just tighten up any slack with the pull strings.
nice review, i love japanese quality , they put love in what they make. my only issue with this design is wind. if you get wind coming in the front side its like a scoop on a hot rod. you can run ropes left and right to stabilize for side wind. for a summer , spring, fall, long term stay at one site, i like it.
Great review, this looks like a cool tent! I would prefer it was available in the color blue, but otherwise I can see why the setup process and price point are negatives. Overall, I do like the design and functionality of this tent. I do like other Snow Peak products, they seem to be quite high quality.
New subscriber here! I’ve enjoyed binge watching your channel today. A bunch of the stuff you review can translate over to the trucking industry. My wife and I drive a rig and cook our own meals in the rig. We’ve already ordered some of the stuff you have recommended. So happy I accidentally found your channel. God bless you and yours. 31B out.
Maybe in Japan, they use the inside of the tent for more activities, so there's room for a small kitchen inside, maybe. I wonder if you can pitch the front porch lower for bad weather. It doesn't look like it. It would be nice to have different height settings. That's why I'm kind of a cobble-it-together with tarps guy. Seems like a great summer tent. It will capture every breeze when it's wide open. Very airy design. Makes sense the Japanese would come up with this with their climate.
Luke and I have differing opinions about tenet occupancy capacity. I am guessing he assumes occupants, dog, and gear all processed through a woodchipper prior to camping? My general rule is divide the recommended occupancy by 2 and round down for actual use (a 1-person tent has an actual occupancy of 0).
Hi Luke hope your doing well I’ll be buying this tent looks really good also hope you and susie are planning another van camp looking forward to seeing you you both see on the next adventure Gary Liverpool
personally if i am camping near my vehicle i'd just use a cabin tent. i can stand up in it. i can furnish it like an apartment: oversized cot, table, tent air conditioner system, portable power system or vehicle inverter. Not worried about pack weight or bulk near my vehicle either. 🤪
You could potentially set it up to create a wind tunnel if you desired too.. Though the price tag is very Steep for what they consider a one person tent and polyester material.. We could get a tent and a separate tarp for much cheaper & make one ourselves.
I wish we could get some of their gear. The Korean tents and gear always seem top notch compared to the Coleman stuff or similar gear we see here in NA.
Snow Peak makes some great tents, at least conceptually. I don't know about their quality -- they seem to get good feedback on that account too -- but their designs/layouts are something to behold.
I really enjoy watching your videos you are very informative, about the products you use but I have one question where did you get your pop-up fire pit? That is a coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
I've watched a lot of Japanese camping video's they seem to love their camping trinketry and novelties. I would guess it's a one-man tent for them after they get everything set up.
I purchased this tent after watching this video. As it's on offer. Couple of this to note. Yes 2 people can fit in it. But it's tight.if you make the inside a rectangle it's actually only 85cm deep. 140cm to the rear point.making it impossible to buy the right size mat or airbed for 2 people. To get the biggest possible tarp fully extended all the guide ropes and nail the pegs as far out as possible. Tightening the guide ropes makes the tarp foot print smaller inside.im guess Luke is about 5.2" because the tent looks much bigger in his video than it really is.quailty seems good tho
Man I am a Japanese camping product fan. I been buying most of my gear from Amazon Japan and Japanese websites. My brother is a snowpeak fanatic .I know the Alpha breeze which he has you can stand in it but the footprint is rather small for my liking. I'm different I like to stand in my tents with room to take a couple of stepts in. So I buy Coleman Japanese tents which I have a few of. Its like on the level of snowpeak , totally different that what Coleman here in the USA offers. Hoping one day you can review Coleman Japan tents and gear.
Hi Luke! This is a really fascinating tent concept! I have some questions, though. Is the front pole that holds the front of the tarp up a fixed length or can it be adjusted? It seems like if it were adjustable, you could lower it in really bad weather for extra protection from some wind and wind-blown rain. Do you think that would work? It would probably be necessary to re-adjust the guy-lines, but I think that would be a useful option. The only problem with this tent system is the inflated price.
Like the configuration; can be set up in forest using trees, in a field as you showed, or desert with using poles. Nice design, too bad involved to set up.
Question: if you have a family of 3 or 4 people, could you use 2 of these tents and use a shared poll for the pitch and angle the sides of the tarp to make like a communal area?
Quick Correction : I called the color of this shelter Ivory but it is in fact Sand. There is an Ivory (lighter) colored version available as well.
Please excuse the mistake.

They discontinued this tent last week! Buy it while you can. Also, you did a review of this same tent like 4 years ago!
What's the shortest the poles will collapse to? As of writing this Snow Peak has a 30% off sale; 08/22/24
For me, this tent is way too much in packaging dimension - but I know Snow Peak for the Fork and Spoon Set (is really worthy and a recommendation).
This tent is down to $349 as of 11-10-24
Why on earth would I want a dog in the tent ?

A tent with a tarp is the best setup. From backpacking with a hammock to family car camping, it can change a shitty trip to a good time.

Maybe the reason they are calling it a one person tent is because they are selling it to Americas and they are playing it safe?
Since this obviously isn't a backpacking tent, I'd say calling it a 1 person tent is accurate. Perhaps they’re accommodating the Sumo wrestler campers as well. 1 person only in that case.
American has a lot of fats, that’s a safe bet
I think it has to do with confined space oxygen levels.
I would want that room to spread out myself. Two would be a little cramped to me.

I'm with the company on this one, I don't want to share a tent with anyone, no matter the size. 😊
Yup
Condescensation is usually the problem in winter. I like how this works. Plus enough room under the ( porch for a small stove of sorts ) wouldn't try a fire under there. Just saying.
I don't think saying Snow Peak is unknown in the U.S. is accurate. Their cookware and stoves are pretty ubiquitous premium products at retailers and online. It would be more appropriate to say anything else they make is relatively unknown.
This is the coolest tent I've seen!
I love the esthetics of this tent.
Their Gigapower stove was my first experience with an amazingly tiny backpacking stove
I love the snowpeak Li stove on tripod legs. It has a ring burner and internal burner. Not suitable for Ul camping tho
People like stuff.
Exactly
Absolutely a great idea, love it Luke
Wow that is one massive tarp. It gives you a nice covered patio area. I really like the design but the price point I truly understand what you mean.
Thank You Again Luke Great Info. And Tent Does Look Good❤
looks great for rainy camp trips! .
Interesting tent. We would definitely consider purchasing one. The price is like $100 too high though. Thanks Luke.
🧂
It take time to setup, but while finished it is so beautiful.
Little overweight for backpacker, good for car camping.
Great review, this looks like a cool tent! I would prefer it was available in the color blue, but otherwise I can see why the setup process and price point are negatives. Overall, I do like the design and functionality of this tent. I do like other Snow Peak products, they seem to be quite high quality.
Great video!! Very interesting tent indeed. Love the content!
Looks very much like my Hilleberg Anaris. Lovely type o tent!
31B out.
Looks like a great tent of excellent quality, reminds me of products that America used to produce a long time ago.
I'm going to do that with my OneTigris Cosmito 2, smart idea and I need just 2 telescopic poles... And a Proteus OneTigris tarp 😊
I like it on first viewing. I haven’t seen a system like this ever. That’s a big canopy with the tarp.
Now THAT is a great system!!
now thats a cool tent! solves a similar problem to the big agnes wyoming trail 2 but goes about it differently
I figured you pitched the tent and slept inside the carry case.
Another great review, Luke. Neat tarp-tent set-up. I can see the appeal. Greetings from up North.
😊interesting set up, thanks for sharing 👍
Looks like they gave it some thought when developing this system. Looks goog .🙂
Luke and I have differing opinions about tenet occupancy capacity. I am guessing he assumes occupants, dog, and gear all processed through a woodchipper prior to camping? My general rule is divide the recommended occupancy by 2 and round down for actual use (a 1-person tent has an actual occupancy of 0).
the anti- claustrophobic tent 🤙😎🤙
Oh that looks so lovely
Hi Luke hope your doing well I’ll be buying this tent looks really good also hope you and susie are planning another van camp looking forward to seeing you you both see on the next adventure Gary Liverpool
personally if i am camping near my vehicle i'd just use a cabin tent. i can stand up in it. i can furnish it like an apartment: oversized cot, table, tent air conditioner system, portable power system or vehicle inverter. Not worried about pack weight or bulk near my vehicle either. 🤪
Looks like a great tent for motorcyclists.
You could potentially set it up to create a wind tunnel if you desired too.. Though the price tag is very Steep for what they consider a one person tent and polyester material.. We could get a tent and a separate tarp for much cheaper & make one ourselves.
It’s a cool concept. Wish it came in a backpacking version
Funny thing???? I did the same thing with an old tent over a dome tent. It makes a wind rain and shade protected.
You should check out the Korean women "glampers" and some of the tents they use, as well as camping accessories.
Ok, now we know. Thanks for that info!
Amazing. I had an almost identical tent 40 years ago. The tarp is longer.
I really enjoy watching your videos you are very informative, about the products you use but I have one question where did you get your pop-up fire pit? That is a coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
Niiice! Really like this one!
Luv the Japanese outdoor gear.
I like this concept.
Good review Luke. Interesting setup. Price , not so good 🙃
Always good to see something that is not from Temu. Has to actually watch the video.
Always brilliant video
That is a nice looking tent and ty
Like the configuration; can be set up in forest using trees, in a field as you showed, or desert with using poles.
Nice design, too bad involved to set up.
The tent intrigued me and I looked on the website. Right now they have them for $350.
Question: if you have a family of 3 or 4 people, could you use 2 of these tents and use a shared poll for the pitch and angle the sides of the tarp to make like a communal area?
It is a nice concept like a mesh tent with a tarp, like the Thru-Hiker Mesh House 2 Trekking Pole Shelter but bigger!
Love this. Could park the bike nose (or rear) forward under the tarp while minimizing risk if bike falls over.
$344 USD on Amazon US today (Nov. 3, 204). Much more palatable price then the 400 plus mentioned in the video.
