Permethrin Fact Sheet: Did you know?
Download the Permethrin Fact Sheet PDF
    What is permethrin?
It is a stable (synthetic) form of an insecticidal compound produced by the chrysanthemum flower.
It is commonly used to treat lice (Nix 1% shampoo) and scabies infections (5% cream).
It biodegrades quickly in contact with soil and water.
It is odorless and will not stain clothing.
    How well does it work?
It has been used as a clothing treatment to prevent bites from ticks, flies, and mosquitoes since the 1970s, and used by the military since the 1990s.
It provides a quick tick knock-down effect - both repels and kills.
A URI study found that people wearing permethrin-treated sneakers and socks were 73.6 times less likely to have a tick bite than those wearing untreated footwear.
Each at-home treatment lasts for roughly 3-4 weeks (with washing!).
Commercially-treated clothes can last up to 70 washes.
Should I be concerned about using this chemical?
Permethrin is over 2,250 times more toxic to ticks than humans.
Put directly on the skin, typically less than 1% of active ingredient is absorbed into the body; DEET can be absorbed at over 20 times that rate.
Exposure risk of permethrin-treated clothing to toddlers is 27 times below the EPA's Level of Concern (LOC).
A 140-pound person would have no adverse health effects if exposed to 32 grams of permethrin/day. There is less than 1 gram of permethrin in an entire bottle of clothing treatment.
Permethrin is pregnancy category B (showing no evidence of harm to fertility or fetus).
**Caution: Permethrin won’t hurt humans or dogs but it is harmful to bees, fish, and aquatic insects - do not spray clothing near flowers or water sources. Do not allow cats near permethrin-treated clothing until it has fully dried.

You are a hoot! I especially enjoyed the natural insect repellent segment. I've been watching for about five years and just about everything I now know about hammocks I learned from you. It's your fault a 67 year old, overweight, out-of-shape woman took her first ever backpacking trip this year and did 60 miles solo on the AT., packing a hammock and portable CPAP (the CPAP isn't your fault). You make it all seem so accessible. Thank you!
I had some equipment failures early on (now resolved), then got bitten by a brown recluse which cut the trip short, but plan to return to the AT again in Feb. I'm off-the-boat Irish and enjoy all your Irish references, and I nearly fell over when you started spouting Japanese, as I speak it. You are so much fun to watch, and I learn so much from you. Thank you!

I got tired of the skeeters biting me through my hammock at night and finally got some of the Gordon's Permethrin 10% Livestock & Premise Spray. I diluted it down to the 0.5% recommendation after doing LOTS of research. I dumped my hammock, long sleep pants, a couple long sleeve 'fishing' shirts, a few pairs of socks, and my Frogg Toggs rain jacket into a trash bag with a gallon of the 0.5% solution. I let it soak everything through and then hung everything out to dry.
THE BUGS DIDN'T EAT ME ALIVE LAST NIGHT!!
I did the math on the stuff I bought compared to the Sawyer brand stuff at Walmart and I got about $500.00 worth of solution for $16.00!! I now have enough to treat my camp gear every spring for the next four years, plus my first treatment.
This stuff is going to really improve my happiness at camp in bug country and save me money on stinky skeeter spray. 👍

Ok I know this video is from last year but I just wanted to let everyone know who finds this my story with Permethrin. Anyway I'm from Australia and I work in the bush five days a week (I spend more time in the bush then I do at home). Two years ago my company got some Permethrin I soaked all my work clothes actully the day before I got 14 ticks. Since soaking twice in two years I havn't had any ticks on me they still drop onto my clothes but they get off very quickly it's like I have a tick sheild :) anyway thats my story and Permethrin works.

Great tips, definitely some new things to try. Never underestimate the power of a little campfire smoke. If I'm alone or with my kids and having a brief fire around or after dinner, I'll try to set up our tent or hammock downwind of the fire. Letting the smoke drift and permeate the tent and hammock while we eat. Once the fire's out, crawl into bed and no bugs. Sure, you and your stuff smell like a house fire when you get home, but it doesn't bother you on the trail.

You tossed in some really great advice at the end of this video. A few years back we were camping in a mature forest during some wet weather. Really light rain that was off and on all day for three days. On the morning of day three, it started. One loud crash after another as rain soaked rotten branches started falling all around us. They soaked up the rain and became so heavy they just broke off. It was a very unnerving experience. Great advice and a really good reminder Shug. Thank you.

    Thanks for sharing, Shug,
I recently purchased the Thermacell MR-BP, and used it for a week camping (7/2-8) with my sons' boy scout troop. I slept in my hammock and didn't use a bug net. I had no bug issues, other than moths when I turned on my headlamp.
I sprayed my hammock and clothing with Permethrin, used Picaridin on my skin, and used the Thermacell near my hammock. I lit the Thermacell about 15 minutes before getting in to my hammock (10 PM). I let it burn for a couple of hours and turned it off when nature called. In the morning, just before getting up (5am), I lit it again. All three seemed to do the trick.
I did see lots of ticks, but they didn't want to stay on me and my clothing. Mosquitoes were nowhere to be found near my hanging spot. Flys and moths seemed to stay away too. I did have a battery powered fan over my head and that seem to keep flys away.
I'll have to try the sticks and see how well they work. Thanks again!

Packed everything up, informed the camp office, and shifted sites immediately.

Hey Shug, well done. Did you know: You can get concentrated Permetherin and dilute it to 5% as this is the % that is effective and is what Sawyer uses. Any more concentrated than 5% is no more effective than higher concentrations. There is also a company that does what is called a lifetime treatment at 70 washings. It is suggested that after doing a Sawyer Permetherin Treatment (and drying), that you store your Permetherized clothing in a black plastic bag as Permetherin degrades in air and in sunlight. Sawyer is said to last 6 weeks or 6 washings before retreatment is necessary. Some use a mosquito netting instead of a no-see-um as the mosquito netting offers more ventilation. If there are no-see-ums, use your Permetherin on your mosquito head net. Enjoy your buggy summer.

To fend off chiggers I use sublimed sulfur powder on my lower legs, socks & boot tops or shoe at the ankle. I also sprinkle & spread it on the groin area, waist, armpits & neck. Some folks object to the slight sulfur smell if they are hunters. Before I learned about the sublimed sulfur I used all sorts of insect sprays but I was once hospitalized for a large severe chigger bites infection of the lower legs. Using the sublimed sulfur keeps chiggers off.

For what you pay for that Sawyer's bottle i can get a gallon jug from the farm supply in the livestock fly spray section and dilute it down to the same .5% solution as the Sawyers. I mix it by the gallon in a garden sprayer and after I soak my clothes and gear and leave em to dry i use the rest around the outside of the house and we dont have ants, spiders, etc.

Allethrin is a synthetic duplicate of a component of pyrethrum. Pyrethrum is a botanical insecticide extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Allethrin, the first synthetic pyrethroid, was introduced in 1949, and is a mixture of several isomeric forms. The most common form is a 4:1 mixture of the trans- and cis-isomers.
Pyrethrum was a genus of several Old World plants now classified as Chrysanthemum or Tanacetum (e.g., C. coccineum) which are cultivated as ornamentals for their showy flower heads. Pyrethrum continues to be used as a common name for plants formerly included in the genus Pyrethrum. Pyrethrum is also the name of a natural insecticide made from the dried flower heads of Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium and Chrysanthemum coccineum.

good info Shug as usual. I discovered the Off fan thingy a few years ago and I won't be without it when I'm in camp. I soak everything in farm grade Permethrin (good for livestock and dogs) and it works like a charm. I also have used that all natural stuff, but just isn't as effective as the Picaridin or DEET (which I've read in past studies can be carcinogenic if used too often @ 100%). Gonna have to try that Japanese product now. Thanks for the info! Cheers! DonP

  • @wondermonkeyoutdoors

I'm another that uses Permethrin. I go to a farm store and get the kind where you mix it yourself. I mix it properly and put my items in a trash bag and pour it in. I turn it over here and there and leave it overnight. The next day I wring it all out and hang it to dry. Done.

I'm a red head, too, and I also have found that mosquitoes like everyone else better than me. Watching a movie in Viet Nam on the side of a whitewashed barracks, with the occasional gekko running across the leading lady's face, I would gradually become aware of motion all around me, and when it broke through to my consciousness, I looked around. It was only then I realized everybody but me waving and swatting at mosquitoes that had not bothered me a bit. Sitting on a cabin porch in Maine I only noticed them after every one else went inside, and I felt a sting on my wrist. A mossy that looked more like a mayfly
had nailed me through my flannel shirt.

I've used the Thermacell for years. Nearly all repellents will destroy the coatings on optics, and when we set up our telescopes for an all night imaging session, the only thing that works, and surprisingly works extremely well, is the Thermacell. We use the butane powered ones, and the butane is good for two wafers of Thermacell repellent. In calm nights, it creates a 10 foot circle of protection. If it's windy, it loses all effect.

Thermacells are really good, they've saved me much blood all over the world, from the mozzie-heavy swamps of eastern Europe to the Belizian jungle. They're quite expensive as far as refills go, but you CAN refill the gas cartridges if you're handy. There are Many TH-cam videos on the subject.

NOTE NOTE NOTE... once the permethrin has dried completely you _should_ rinse the clothing. It was explained to me that the permethrin bonds with the fabric. But there are leftovers which need to be rinsed or you MIGHT develop a rash. I did when I accidentally wore the shirt inside out after a fresh treatment.
