      Good video Franny. I'm set up with a Carter 60430 with this regulator into a singe Weber .40 carb. I put a 0-5 PSI mechanical gauge on the other output and it works pretty well. I tried a Marshall liquid filled 1.5 inch gauge initially and that gauge had me chasing my tail trying to get the 3 psi I was looking for. What I do notice is that my pressure goes immediately to zero when I shut down. Is that normal for an electrical rotary style pump?

    Now you know why the dial in fuel regulators are junk. I'm glad you went with a better regulator. If I were you I would mount the new regulator to the fan shroud. The location where you have the regulator now is a fire hazard on standby.

      Buck Gill that can be frustrating, but the good thing about working on your beetle is that every job you do is a job fixed. And to top it off, it’s not a new car that you need a science degree to wrench on. Also, I recently discovered through my own experience that new VWs use plastic engine parts. Oil pan, plastic. Intake, plastic. Water pump assembly, plastic. Luckily it cracked under warranty. But I’m not confident that a meticulously maintained Golf had a mechanical failure in such a short time with such few kilometres. I’m selling it and going back to a beetle.

    Another way to adjust the fuel pressure is to grind the flat end of the fuel pump pushrod in small increments until the desired pressure is reached .. Keep in mind that the Generator push rod is not the same length as the Alternator push rod ..

    Love your videos, but you really need to pay more attention to safety. Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to work on moving machinery with long, loose hair? Rewatch this video right after you have installed the new regulator as you are showing the line routing. At one point, with your head right in front to the (moving) fan belt, you turned to face the camera and your ponytail swung around right in front of it and I swear, I jumped in my seat because I was sure your head was gonna get pulled into the motor. You should know better.

      Home Built By Jeff I was too! I ground down the old pin to just shy of 3psi and I thought I would just touch it the tiniest bit more... Put it back together and no pressure at all! That's what convinced me! Jerry (the owner) has been driving the car daily and says it is running great. I hope he isn't just saying that, but that holly seems quite a bit better than the old one... I used permatex on the threads of the couplers and that worked well... Love your 911 work. I need to keep going... Did you get the bent ring sorted? F

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet the Holly would have enough flow. Just use the pressure gauge and look for a pressure drop at WOT. If it holds you should be just fine... The Holly should have a spec on flow rate. It might be harder to find for your carbs...

  • @secoff1
    @secoff1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Frannie-here is my humble .02: the best thing you can do is dispense altogether with the mechanical fuel pump. Electric fuel pumps work great-install in front of car below tank level and you can get them 3psi right out the box.Solex carbs do great with 3 psi.In this case no need for regulator. I have used them as T set set up for dual carbs and the Holley works fine.You are correct the other is one scheisse. Advantage of electric is no more vapor lock ever. Of course you would need to install a safety fuel shut off relay as well if you go the electric route. Anyway cheers.

    • @TacoTabascoFresh

      Had a few questions:
      I'm installing a Carter electric fuel pump to my Ghia. Im installing it in the front, right as it takes off from the gas tank.The Carter electric fuel pump comes with a filter. Do u need to install another fuel filter in the rear? ( I would say yes, right?).
      Second question:
      I'm removing my old fuel and capping it off with a fuel pump block off. Should I remove the plastic base along with the pin? (Once again, I believe I should). I'm I right?

  • @hansjorgensen9241
    @hansjorgensen9241 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Franny, I put a Fuel regulator on my 74' supper beetle and it corrected my problem per you video. my pump was flooding the carburetor/engine. all engines should hove this installed. However, when engine cooled down I could not start, no fuel, or I should say it drained from the fuel filter. Engine would start with start fluid then stop. So, I'm on suspicion I damaged the pump because {if the pump produces 4 lbs. of fuel and I regulate to 2 lbs. the remaining 2lbs. had nowhere to go} I'm thinking of a bypass valve to redirect. your thoughts. Hans

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm... something doesn't sound quite right. Check the pressure after the pump and then after the regulator (or simply bypass the regulator). Just confirm the pump has pooped out. It shouldn't hurt the pump but if it is old and needs a rebuild it might be time... F

      Well, it is more about the type of carburetor you have. Just search for the specs and that will tell you. As a rule of thumb, stay below 3.2 psi and watch the pressure meter when you shut off the car. It should hold steady.

    The fuel leaking out of the top is so, you can use it as a lamp to work on your engine....Just light the fuel on fire and presto...you will be able to see to replace your fuel filter and adjust your sawmill distributor.
    If it says EMPI, walk away. Probably when you opened the blister pack you could smell the Chinesium.
    However it was chrome! Whats the deal with EVERY aftermarket part for VW's being chrome? Kawabunga dude!
    Sorry...I had to do that!
    When I was younger I went into a VW salvage yard and saw a 55 gal. drum of original fuel pumps... (I saw 2 - 55 gal drums of original distributors) and I thought Gee!....everybody is getting new fuel pumps. Well, my car at the time had one of these cheap fuel pumps. And I had endless trouble out of it. You would think aftermarket companies would make good fuel pumps...not so.
    What I did to fix this was this.
    I accepted my brothers (Yoda) mantra of original parts only. ''When you add or take away original designs and parts from a VW you are gargling trouble''.
    So, I found out what kind of engine I had, more importantly what kind of distributor drive I had. Because the fuel pump rod works in conjunction with the cam profile on the distributor drive. Got used ORIGINAL parts, cleaned and put new diaphragms in the fuel pump (you can still get good rebuild kits)
    Got out the Bentley book found the correct parameters and adjusted them with zero...extra gaskets (see mantra above) Put every thing together and it worked flawlessly.
    Also I removed my engine fire ( fuel filter) above all that white hot metal and my then ,wildly sparking/arcing sawmill distributor. Because VW never put a fuel filter in there (see Yoda above) The original design was a fuel filter in the tank, and there is a brass bolt on the front of the original fuel pump....behind that is (DISCO!) the secondary fuel filter.
    So VW fixed all the problems for you...yeaaaayyy!
    From :
    having ''pea shooters'' correct depth in your original exhaust (NO HEADERS) so that correct back pressure is obtained to push exhaust gas into the preheat tube on your intake. Allowing the carb to be warmed atomizing the mixture properly so the engine runs proper and doesn't foul plugs.
    To:
    Running the correct distributor to help keep #3 cylinder cooler (retarded cam lobe, single port engines)
    To:
    Having EVERY piece of tin
    To:
    Running dual port engines in cars with (SLOTS IN THE DECK LID FOR COOLING!)
    Its all in the Bently......Not Climer, Hayes bla, bla, bla books...Bently book. If its all original (as close as you can get) it will last longer, and give you less trouble.
    Now I will climb off my soap box.
    Great channel, love your work, love VW's...keep on buggin!

    I found your troubleshooting technique pretty thorough when "Lemon Drop" died on it's way back from your shop with it's owner. Very clever use of the vacuum line cap to extend the fuel pump rod. I had a 72 "Super Beetle" purchased used overseas in Spain while I was stationed there with the US Navy. I brought the car back to VT once I got out of the USN. That 72 Super Beetle of mine had a number of problems over the 6 or 7 years I owned it, but I wouldn't go into that extensive list. Poor design, lousy manufacturing, etc..., still didn't take everything away from it being my 1st car and I enjoyed it a lot. Of course, I swore I'd never to own another VW vehicle, and never have. My hat's off to you for your shop, and your work on these cars. I learned a lot about regular maintenance on vehicles with that bug.
    Your videos are very informative, fun to watch, and I enjoy them. (I've even learned a thing or two :-) . Maybe a small bucket, or coffee can, etc..., when you think you'll have to pull off a fuel line, or fuel pump on your next road side house call ;-). Great site, and well done to you both.

    Todo está bien pero lo que si no debe de ser es instalar un filtro de gasolina dónde está la bobina de encendido es peligroso debe de ir la manguera directa hasta el carburador el filtro de gas debe de ir ya sea donde está el tanque de combustible o muy por detrás de la tolva "doghouse" felicidades por sus videos y saludos!

    Excellent video - I recently bought a new carb for my stock 1200 and was having no success in getting the idle & mixture screws to respond appropriately! I picked up a fuel pressure gauge based on your last video and tested the fuel pump pressure - 4.2psi !! I now have a new regulator on the way ( I definitely would have went for the cheaper EMPI ). Really appreciate the content THANK YOU!

    I have the same issue, I’m loosing pressure after the car is shut off. But mine won’t even start. It was working fine was starting it every week 2-3 times. After I replaced the front brakes, shite rod coupler and bushing it started to have issues now won’t start. Unless I put gas down the carb. I replaced the fuel pump and it is putting out about 5psi. You said that was high so a regulator is in the future installation plans. But it won’t start at all without gas been poured on the carb. Any ideas?

      Sounds like your choke isn't operating... Is the step cam rotating down when the car is cold? It also needs to be plugged in so that it can retract as the car warms up.

    I have a question and thank you if someone answers it, in this video it was spoken of making sure the pressure was being held even with the car off, I just installed the same regulator, adjust it to 2.1-2.2 on a dual Kadron 44's for a 1915 motor, but when motor is off pressure goes up to 3.1 on the needle... Is this a problem or?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn't be. You just don't want the pressure to exceed what the float valve (needle and seat) can hold. just let it sit after the engine has stopped for a few minutes and re-check the pressure. If it holds you are good.

    Hi Franny, I have not gotten a 73 beetle yet.. I do like to work on cars. I will get that super toolkit that you meantioned. I liked the lemon drop video. That was amazing how you pin pointed the problem so quickly. I will get that John Muir book. I have never owned a classic beetle yet. I hope it is a ton easier that working on a 2000 vw Passat v6. My previous car. Thanks again

    Hi Franny. Would you trust a vw beetle to do a coast to coast drive? I am thinking about buying a 73 super beetle to drive from east coast to west coast and back. I always wanted to do this. Am I asking for trouble?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dwayne, are you a person who likes to tinker? John Muir has the book ‘How to keep your Volkswagon Alive’, and that is how he would sort his car. You will probably need a super toolkit and there may even be a network of people available for parts along the way. You just really need to be prepared. So, asking for trouble is a tough question. How sorted is the car? How do you feel about working on it? What did you think of the Lemon Drop ‘stranded’ video?

    Do you think running an electric fuel pump is ok or are you against them. Just want to get your opinion. Thanks

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brent, I think they are just fine. Unless you have an bone stock car, it is a great option and can even blow through the stock pump, but be careful that the mechanical pump has a good diaphragm or it will dump gas into the engine! Probably best to remove the old pump and cap off the hole. Be sure that the pump you install is for carburetors and puts out no more than 3.5psi.

    can high fuel pressure affect idle speed/adjustment.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can... If it is blowing past the needle and seat then it will lower the idle by making the engine run rich.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Shawn, that is a great question! I had done a bit of research on that and looks like any type of pipe tape could break off and clog something downstream. I used some Permatex #2 on the threads and that worked really well. Franny

    In the links, the 90 degree hose barb you have listed is 3/8” with 1/8 barb. In the video you said you were using 3/8” with 3/8 barb. Did you make a mistake in the links or decide to go with the smaller barb? Thank you so much for all of your videos. Saved me countless times!

    • @HeidiandFranny

      Probably! Just use the correct size for your fuel line. The original is metric and kinda in between those two sizes...

    You don't need a regulator for that engine they never came with one, you can just shim the fuel pump if needed . And that non stock 009 distributor isnt helping either

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is true for a stock pump, but not the aftermarket pumps, unfortunately. You can't shim the pump (or grind the rod)... If you get the pressure into the 2.5psi range, the flow is so low that you will run lean at speed which could be the end of your engine. I tried all that first with the gauge hooked up. Agreed on the 009. I'm not a fan...
