    UPDATE: Well, that EMPI 9092 fuel pressure regulator FAILED! I'm removing it from the description. It started to leak very badly. I have ordered a Holly regulator ( Holly 12-804 1-4psi regulator: goo.gl/Q8wbKr) as a replacement. I'll update again after I've had a chance to review it. -- Franny
    We have Miss Lemon Drop back in the garage for a fuel pump replacement. You may remember that she pooped out on the way home and Heidi and I got her running again. The owner (Jerry) purchased a new pump “kit” with the pump, rod, spacer, and gaskets. I go through the installation of the pump, and also a check of the fuel pressure. That was a big surprise! At 5psi, it was twice what the carburetor specs. VW says to add a gasket or two to raise the pump and thereby limit the rod throw to lower the pressure. The problem with these aftermarket pumps is that if you go the route, you will have to grind the rod so much to get the pressure down, the flow will be too low to support the needs of the engine at running RPMs. The only real solution is to install a pressure regulator to meet the requirements of the float bowl needle and seat in the carburetor while still maintain adequate flow.

      @@rodolfogomez382 ....When was anything said about modifying the engine? If you are reffering to the fuel regulator it is a necessary part of the new fuel system. The high pressure replacement pump requires it. This is very common on many aftermarket fuel pump replacements.

      I love you so much Franny and Heidi you made my whole life better . I've been ripped off time and time again and started working on my bug's myself .

      When I saw you using that regulator, I was about to comment and say I almost burnt my car to the ground using one of those because it failed. Can't believe businesses still stock these things.

    I never thought fuel pressure could play any role in proper running of the engine. I don't know how many things we simply ignore thinking they do not matter. The fact of the matter is, the people who build it must have put a lot of time and energy to come up with the final product so nothing can be ignored. Everything is there food a reason. Thank you for another video understandable by amateurs.

    Franny I’ve seen many different videos on working on my 1971 super beetle. I want to say you really take that extra second to explain what ur doing and why while conducting your work. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart! Ive had problems as a kid now grownup understandings what I have read my comprehension is cylinders short! Viva! VW ✌️

    Hi Franny and Heidi,
    In the last few weeks I have overhauled most of the fuel system on my 55’ 356. Thanks for the great video about changing the fuel cock on the C. I ended up rebuilding mine and having enough parts for the later one that would fit on Miss Eva. My son and I rebuilt the 36 hp type VW fuel pump with a rebuild kit. The “ bake a light” or phenolic spacer was cracked around the metal inserts. I ended up drilling holes down each crack cleaning out with brake cleaner, blowing dry the holes and cracks and then injecting in J B weld till it came oozing up from all the holes and metal inserts and cracks. After letting it sit overnight I then flattened the surface with a dental grinder to be perfectly smooth checking it against a flat glass plate. The right carburetor was not metering fuel correctly( overly rich) so I ended up rebuilding it. It ran really strong after that. (I will be rebuilding the left one after getting home from my Colorado vacation.) The questions I have for Franny are, what fuel pressure should I be looking for with the old Solex 32 PBJ’s and should I take some old wine bottle corks and plug off either side of the balance tube when I am balancing the carburetors?

      Hi James, I believe the fuel pressure is 2.6 PSI. Getting a good needle and seat can be difficult, but I believe 356 Carburetor Rescue sells a good set. I'd have to brush up a bit on the Solex for tuning. That is a good question. I think 356 CR has a good reference on that as well.

    Heidi, I followed your excellent instructions to install a Holley fuel pressure regulator on my 1969 VW Bus. The reduced pressure makes the engine run a lot smoother. It now starts first time - I believe the needle valve in the carburetor was flooding the float chamber under the higher pressure.

    I had a 1973 1300 Beetle for nearly 30 years and did most of the stuff in your video so watching brought back great memories.     Hi Franny. Just want to say thank you for taking the time and making this video. I know that it's been five years
    since you did this video that I just came across while surfing for answer to the problem I was having with my 55
    Beetle with carburation. After watching your video I saw that I had installed my pressure meter and regulator on
    the wrong side and of course it wasn't working. Funny thing is that not even my mechanic spotted the mistake.
    Thanks to your video I got it all corrected and my car is running better then ever. Again much love and thanks from
    me and June Bug. Yeah, that's what my wife and granddaughter call it.

    Great, great video. I bought a 73 type 1 in December that had not been started or driven since 1995. I got it started but the fuel pump was spitting gas like a little boy making truck noises. This video is exactly what I needed to confidently replace the gaskets. Thank you so much.

    I dont believe it. I discovered your channel about 24 hrs ago and I have learned tons already! Fuel pressure, to me, was never a thing to even be considered an issue! Im gonna get me a gauge and regulator for sure (not the empi one). Maybe this is the reason why my car is so damn hard to start sometimes.

    "It has a smell that brings up lots of memories" So true. For me that's transmission oil. Unmistakable, unforgettable smell. I ruined a friends leather toolbelt just by it sitting the same garage while I did transmission work. When he brought it home it stunk up his garage so bad he had to toss it. lol.

      I'm *guessing* this is an issue with these new aftermarket pumps... Porsche says that the fuel pressure on a 356 is adjusted the same way VW says - add or remove spacers on the pump mount... I suppose after 60 years or so there can be some rod wear. Honestly the most important bit for the 356 is to grease the base of the pump!

    Back in the day we would put the fuel pump "stand/riser" on a grinder or sand paper on lower it.(sand down where the "stand/riser" meets the bottom of the pump), ergo allowing the rod to rise higher into the pump if it ever appeared to have worn down the push rod and prevented flow.
    I'm not being critical, I love your videos. I bought my 72 convertible when I was 15 and I still have it 41 years later.

      Hi Steve, Try using that fuel pressure gauge and see if the pump is doing its thing. The trick is to get good flow at the correct pressure.

      Remember you have to use the proper rod! The short rod, 100mm is for alternator style, longer rod for Generator style.

    It almost seems like it would be easier for companies to make a thicker aluminum spacer to replace the phenolic spacer. That way it would keep the pressure correct with the new design pumps. Also if it was to tall then it would be easier to machine a little off the spacer to bring it in to spec. Good information about the ALT/GEN pump differences. Happy New Year!     Hi Franny, I just found your channel and love it. Just to let you know, I am getting my daughter's 1973 Super Beetle back in original running condition....unscrewing what the previous owner screwed up or "upgraded"....original VW tinware, doghouse thermostat and linkage (was missing), and an original Pierburg VW7 (correct for Type 1) fuel pump, which I rebuilt. At some point, the P.O. replaced the original generator with an alternator.
    I noticed in this episode you mention that the original tall pump won't fit, if you have an alternator, and I've read this in several other places as well. The Pierburg fuel pump I got clears the alternator with about 1/8" to spare, so I would say it's worth it to get a Pierburg and see if it fits, because the advantage is that you can rebuild it vs dealing with the cheap aftermarket pumps and it might allow you to avoid having to add a regulator.
    One last note, depending on the engine serial number and per original VW literature I found online (images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1530631.jpg ), fuel pressure specs ranged from 1.8psi to 2.8psi.

    Bought a 64 with a 1200/40, a 30 pict-1, and a cheap universal electric fuel pump. Doing the same pressure test you did, it's at about 3psi. But it holds the pressure after the engine is off, so i guess the carb can stand that slightly higher pressure. It's 12v converted so the pump is proper for the voltage of the car.
    And as a side note, I have that style pressure regulator on a 6.9L diesel, where it's been for almost three years and it's still working fine. It's just a repackaged regulator that is sold under many brands. Mine was sold as Mr Gasket.

    I’m a newbie, so this video is very helpful! I removed my rid out of my 71 super beetle and it is filed down on the top, not rounded, but also filed down in the middle making a waist lol. Is that okay or should I get a new one and the regulator too?

    The solution I used for pressure is to buy a new Pierburg pump, it was almost $100, but puts out the right pressure, and I like not having to add a regulator and additional hoses and clamps. It’s the later alternator style pump, and has a built in filter. If I had a generator I would get an original pierburg rebuildable pump and use that. Wolfsburg west has the rebuild kits.

    Franny I am restoring a 1964 convertible type 1, pan off restoration. The original copper fuel line was corroded and kinked and needs replacement. I just purchased a Cohline 6mm copper fuel line from Germany, which came coiled in a box. I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a video where the original fuel line is removed and a new one installed. I would supply the tunnel stripped of everything that would make life easier. More importantly done the right way. I would also enjoy meeting someone who enjoys Volkswagens as much as i do and is easy on the eyes. 😁

      Hi James, on your "C" you should be able to use spaces to increase or decrease the fuel pressure if you have an original pump on your car. I believe they respond well to that. I need to give this a go on our A as well. Thanks! Franny

    wish i saw this before i tried to replace the fuel pump only. i just ordered a complete matching kit, I'm gonna
    try first without a regulator. also many people sand the outside of the pump stem mount so it falls into block, this is to stop rod from jamming if motor extremely hot. THANKS!

    Your videos are just superb. You explain things really good and back it up with videos. I’ve been having Fuel problems with my 73 Super Beatle. I don’t think that rod that activates the fuel pump is going up and down. I’m thinking of putting a small electric fuel pump on it to avoid taking the engine apart. The car has an alternator which I put on a few years ago. Any thoughts? Right now there is a short rod on it.

      Ya know, I should check that too actually. That is something you would fix with spacers if you are using the original pump.
