That's amazing, one of my first DG tutorial movies I've seen and I'm coming back after 6 months of learning and it turns out that's the proper method which not many are talking about on YT - including brace, rotation, etc. thank you.
Just wanted to drop a comment saying how much this helped my drive! I’m still so new to the sport but just not picking my head up really helps keep my drives on a straight line. Really appreciate the advice in this video and wanted to let you know 👌
Interesting take! I also played a lot of ball (softball), hitting lefthanded. I also throw a ball lefthanded but use my right hand back hand for most everything else (tennis, ping pong, disc golf ). Up until last year I only threw RHBH shots in disc golf for 30 years! I then messed around with a LHFH with my power arm and after a month was throwing over 300 ft with the forehand and out distancing my RHBH by 50 ft. I'm trying to close the gap with my RHBH so as to not get tennis elbow again with my left elbow from too many forehands.
this makes total sense. I'm a righty so I naturally started throwing righty. I started playing 2 months ago and have practiced form and it has always felt awkward. throwing "lefty" didn't make sense but when you compared it to playing baseball and I tried it I felt like it was more powerful and more natural!! Now I have to go practice it and see if there is any difference. TY
I took a lesson from dan-o about a year ago he made me break my drive back down to a standstill and I recently added that little step to my throw. And I started getting a better distance your video just solidified what I'm doing right thank you very much. and on the topic of tri-tip if you find yourself anywhere near Santa Barbara county you need to go to Cold springs tavern on a Sunday they make a really good tri-tip sandwich.
Joe Hand Dan-o basically does a stand still anyways 😂😂😂 I love hanging with him out at Vista. On the topic of Tri-Tip, I believe my wife’s uncle’s dad “Fritz” was the creator of Santa Maria style tri-tip. We had some friends-tip on that trip that blew my mind... 🤯
This video was made for me. Been playing for 10+ years, have never been able to throw over 250 even though all my buddies can. I'm a bigger dude though, and I usually wear boots so knowing that it's more motion and speed and less power and perfect X form that I should be focusing on. Thank you!!
Much appreciated. Regardless of how well this translates to the course for me, I appreciate your sincerity. You seem very genuine with a true desire to be helpful. It’s noticeable.
loginusername7 thank you so much. That is definitely my intention and I struggled/struggle with this stuff a lot. I’m just trying to put things out there that helped me a lot and hope it helps others too.
Just wanted to give you a huge THANKS for making this video! I've been playing for 6 years and have become more of a student of the game as the years have gone by. I throw RHBP and decided it was time to "learn" how to throw properly. I don't have a funky throw or anything, but wanted to learn how to throw further with less effort. I watched a ton of videos, picked up a lot of good info, but at the end of the day i just couldn't figure out what a proper RHBH throw feels like. Something about what i was doing just didn't feel right. Then i watched your video. I used to play baseball so i figured as silly as it seems, i'll try throwing the disc left hand back hand, the same way i would swing a bat. I immediately had a come to Jesus moment. I could feel the weight transfer in my throw and i finally "got" what everyone has been talking about in terms of throwing with your body. You're right, a right handed batter throwing a disc RHBP is basically like learning to hit a baseball as a lefty. So while i have a lot of rewiring to do in order to transfer my weight properly for RHBP, at least now i finally know what feels right :)
Very good, you almost got it. The power, like in baseball, comes from the separation in movement from upper body to lower body. It's like a rubber band. Also, accuracy has more to do with timing. By turning your head you change the angle of your shoulder to body. Your arm gets ahead of your body which causes the pull. There are many things that can cause it, not just your head. Good job, your analysis of the throw is the best I've seen yet.
Love the emphasis on the brace, it's literally where all the power is coming from. People quickly glaze over the brace, and high level say "if you step forward after the throw, that's energy that's not being transferred to the disc", but rarely go into a detailed explanation of HOW to do that, or drills to practice. I've recently been trying to create a mind body connection with a left handed baseball swing to engage my lower body, hip turn, and brace, but like you said, since I'm a righty, it's been harder to translate into my backhand throw, but it's much better. Another thing is balance. You see Paul McBeth with this super wide pyramid stance when throwing, like an Albert Pujols baseball stance. It's so stable and balanced, it's incredible. To see them throw full force, and still end up balancing on the plant leg, it's so much harder than it looks. Disc golf door frame drill, and a Dave Feldberg vlog on his website from like 2013 are also applicable to this concept.
Jonny Tse I think the biggest thing about going into detail is the HOW as well! I could not wrap my mind around it for the longest time. I also think we have less pros that are trying to teach proper form online and prefer to do it one on one but the time is coming for explosive growth in the disc golf world and hopefully there will be some really good teachers that emerge! The balance and weight stop I have a practical how video I will be coming out with soon. In our sport since we use one hand to throw the disc the other hand/arm can be used (and is used by most of the big distance throwers with a strong brace) to discontinue the rotation of the left shoulder and weight from continuing around your brace and pushing up into it ;) Happy frisbeeing 🤙🤙🤙
🤯 blew my mind all adds up. Baseball and Golf for years explains why I only shoot forehand except putting and been trying to figure it out, and why backhand feels so off insane something so small yet HUGE and right in front of me arrrrgg I am a Grass Valley semi native kind of bounced around but but condon park is my home course very first round I ever played need to go back just to play it.
Finally, someone else who can use baseball as a method to show the weight transfer. BTW, I just throw left handed as I played baseball. It took me a while to learn right handed.
Very nice video ! I will try those things today on the course! I have seen a lot of videos about throwing techniques, but this is one of the better videos hands down. Everybody always talks about "keep the disc on one level and reach back and turn the hips and pull through, but in my opinion the plant foot is so crucial to throw disc far and how you generate the power to the disc. Hit point and release point is also crucial when we talk about accuracy and power. If you don't have plant foot in Place you will automaticly throw disc only with your hand and then accuracy will be so bad, because then you have such a big "sector" to where the disc going to go from your hand. I hope that you understand what I'm trying to say :'D Thanks man!
SamStoneFIN definitely get it my man! This is literally the stuff that I had to learn the hard way after doing it wrong for years! If someone told me it was baseball but batting switch years ago I probably would have been throwing 500+ but now I am slowly inching up to the 450+ zone. Timing and bracing is everything!
I think I finally understand about useing the hips. Just standing in my livingroom swinging my arm, it felt a lot more explosive with a little bit of hip movement. Thanks a lot, keep up the good work :)
Shayne good to see you on videos again. Very informative. My problem is timing on forehands. i can throw forehand easily. I seem to be way early on my weightshift . To the leftside very early lose my acceleration. Hope to see you at Vista,. HELP
I just stumbled upon this video and thought “He looks familiar.” Then it hit me, warming up the morning of the Mesa City Championship. It was great practicing with you and a great video here! Hopefully I can learn how to use my lower body better.
Re: Wrist Curl - If you hold the disc anhyzer like that and your wrist is loose, then gravity and the weight of the disc will pull the wrist into curl/flexion. Otherwise you are fighting gravity to not curl/flex the wrist. Many other top players don't hold the disc anhyzer, so their wrist remains uncurled until the lower arm is accelerated/changing direction and the weight of the disc lags the wrist back or curled.
But you can also prime the wrist. Seppo does that on some of his shots (specially upshots - driver is harder to see): Priming it to the back swing, loosen up, forward to power pocket/ prime/release point. Simon also seem doing this: "wide elbow out" disc into stomach, arm and elbow out, loose wrist , disc to stomach (while keeping elbow out), and there is an explotion.. But I guess you were talking about wrist tension thru the entire swing? Does it change, or is it a preassure/feeling of the disc/weight all the way? Or a pause in all of this mechanics?
@@johnkjetil The pre-curl in the backswing Seppo does, I think is just a loose wrist. He says he doesn't try to curl his wrist like that. The wrist will fluidly change tension to react to the changes in accelerations of the elbow(flexion and extension) during the forward swing to create a spring like loading and unloading of the wrist to transfer energy from the body thru the wrist.
Great video! I’ve been struggling for years with weight shift and using hips. It still hasn’t clicked for me but I think I’m starting to understand it with this!
Tri-tip is the BOMB especially cooked over Red Oak Wood pit, so I know the feeling. Looking forward to work on increasing my power and accuracy of my back-hand. Need to watch your forehand mechanics since I have had difficulty implementing that throw into my game over the past 25 years. Thanks for the vid. Enjoy that tri-tip. It is especially good in tacos.
What a great video! Playing since 2004, but learned technique the wrong way. I understand bracing, but failing big time slinging my forearm in syncronitation with body pivot. How to get it close to the body, when golf, baseball etc. do not have the arm closing in, but swing wide? It feels like a lot of power, moving it in to the chest/powe pocket, get lost. How to keep that momentum, feeling the weight of the disc all the way? JK, 41. from Norway. Thanks again.
Hello! Great question. So I would say the comment about other sports swinging wide is only really seen after extension and into follow through in most sports. Let’s take a pure rotational sport into account like ice skating. You would never swing your arms away from your body to gain speed in a turn when spinning on ice and you can’t do that here. Sorry if I misunderstood that. However, I would suggest that if you want to really practice how to get your body in the correct position for a powerful pocket that is close to your body and explodes out to extension that you practice everything incredibly slow. I’m talking pain-stakingly slow. Just try and feel those change of events from a stand-still and really try and perfect that timing going really slow. Then gradually move up the pace to get a good mix of power and accuracy! Hope that helps? Shayne
@@TheAnglePickleball Thanks for your answer! What I meant to say, was that when I bring my arm in to the body/power pocket, I lose the feeling of the weight of the disc, and from there it's just a blurr. I will take your advice and try going as slow as I can. Thank's again!
Okay got it! My advice would be the same-ish. I would say with great timing from power pocket to full extension you will feel the weight of it. The beato drill part in super slow mo will help and also your front foot should not pivot before you release! Head down disc pushes to full extension from power pocket not looking at where it’s going and only when your left side is all the way through do you rotate your heel and bring your head up to follow through. Happy Slow Mo Practice!
@@TheAnglePickleball If it's okay with you, can I upload a video for you to comment? I'll try doing it in the end of the week, as I do not have a proper camera at the moment. I have with sucsess kept my head down, and hitting my lines much cleaner. I belive this is a part of not opening the shoulders too early. I also have problems with putters/mids vs, drivers. No problem driving putters 250+ and mids close to 300 on golf lines, but drivers end up sky high. Talk to you later, Mr. Angle :)
So out of curiosity.. how far can you normally throw? I appreciate the break down with the " I can throw further flick vs backhand".. that's my issue and I used to play baseball . It's just a left handed swing For rhbh
Bradley Allred so a little while ago I would have said I can throw about 400 max backhand and about 500 max side arm, but recently that has shifted to about even backhand and forehand at 500ish. But golf shots versus max distance I have a much easier time getting a backhand to 400-450 on a golf shot versus forehand about 375-400. It’s really about speed and weight transferring into the disc. I have also picked up some new things about the non-throwing hand that I want to do a video on soon!
@@TheAnglePickleball great!! Would appreciate it... I assume alot of field work and recording yourself helps alot as well. I am stuck at the 325ish mark.. but when I record myself I see what I am doing wrong and I just need to as you mentioned " rewire" my brain to get in sync
Yes lots of field work and filming but I had the same problem of knowing what I’m doing and thinking I fixed it every time for years! It’s hard to rewrite your body once you’ve learned it wrong! Haha but keep at it and it will “click” one day!
I'm going to try this swinging a bat lefty. This is my problem, and I know it, I just couldn't figure out to rewire my brain, as you said. I did get a good hip rotation once, but my brace leg didn't rotate and I twisted my knee. Can anyone give me any tips, beside swinging lefty, to help me rotate the leg. Thanks for the video.
I've found if you're not actually hitting a ball, you don't have to worry with swapping your grip. I grip right handed and swing left handed to improve disc golf dexterity only and it helps tremendously
If I would say that currently I am able to throw around 280ft but I am basically using all arm and trying to force the distance with my upper body, how much more distance can I expect when I get my hips and legs activated fully during my throw? And yeah I can tell that I am using my arm as most of the time I really feel my upper back, rear deltoid and tricep when I throw but I don't feel my legs at all.
It depends a lot on nose angle and off axis rotation as well, but I would say you should be able to throw 350 while engaging your lower body and core. If you went to a batting cage 2 times a week and switch hit and then went to a field you would probably immediately throw that far or even push past it depending on grip/nose angle/off axis rotation.
@@TheAnglePickleball Yeah I have been trying to get my nose angle down also in the last few practice sessions that I've had, and if by off axis rotation you mean the wobble when the disc is in the air, that is not a problem for me as my release seems to be quite clean. I'm also a pretty strong guy (5'11 and 240 pounds with a decent amount of muscle) so it has been quite frustrating to see that it does not matter how hard I throw the disc and I just can't get it to 300 feet, then after watching a few videos of yours and some other guys I realised that I just don't use my hips at all and I noticed that I can pretty much throw 220 feet with a standstill basically only using my upper body so the grind continues. I hope that one day I could reach 500 feet but that will take a long time most likely. Also I want to say thank you for these videos! I can't wait to get back to the course and field to practice getting the real power from the legs. Hopefully I can get that "aha" moment about getting the griplock to go where you want it. I have gotten a really powerful griplock a few times but the disc has always went to the right of target by a mile but the power that those throws have had was incredible. Those felt like they would go forever if the throws would have had the room so at least I know kind of what feeling to aim for. Thank you for the great tips and I will try to incorporate those tips into my technique as soon as I can!
@@TheAnglePickleball yeah I've been trying to gain distance and I think this is holding me back. My throw is all upper body because my lower body doesn't engage no matter what I try
I feel ya. I did it for years and just couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t throw as far! Most of it comes from people being told to rotate and them losing all their power by turning their body around their plant instead of pushing into it. Best visualization is BOWLING! The foot goes to the right of the braced leg.
great video man! wish I saw this when I started instead trying to understand my friends kinda hollow explainations "Just do like this blalblalbalbla" :'D
Vista Disc Golf so it depends if you want to go budget on the net. You can make one out of pvc pipe from Home Depot and just buy netting. Otherwise a soccer style net will work. Then a Pocket Radar baseball radar gun is best but they are pretty expensive unfortunately.
I just started playing, I played baseball when I was a kid, I bat lefty and throw righty, so I try to tell myself the backhand is a swing and the forehand is a submarine throw.
Yeah I'm open to a bunch of things, but I want to throw discs. I left the video at 3 minutes in when he tried showing people how to swing a damn bat. I'm not a top ranked pro but throwing a disc and swinging a bat use different muscles and it's a different movement entirely.
LostLandsLife thank you for taking the time to comment and providing me with your watch minutes. I would love to see a video showing how disc golf body mechanics are different from baseball or golf or tennis or any other sport that uses your body to propel an object. Post a link here and I can’t wait to learn from you.
RHBH weight transfer and brace are essentially identical to a lefty swing from your cross step. The upper body is much different, but sit down on the ground and tell me how far you can throw a disc. The game is ground up if you want to break that 400 feet wall, avoid injury, and improve your game.
Good thing I was a right handed thrower and and left stance hitter in baseball, pretty much had forehand/backhand weight shifts imbedded in my memory. Lol
I wish this was the case for me. When I started trying to break down my form, I noticed my hips don't fire nowhere near as well, as if I were throwing left handed. I've thought about trying to try to learn lefty, lol.
Vista Disc Golf learning lefty would be interesting! lol I still have balance trouble throwing R hand backhand because of my L leg usually being my stance or plant foot when kicking a ball instead of R leg in disc golf. so I’ve had to work on that quite a bit.
Glenn Carter my max was 400 for a while but recently I have been able to get to 475 pretty consistently. That has enabled me to throw 375-400 foot golf shots with pretty good accuracy and ease!
Bryan Robinson Van Devender so I’m basically trying to get people to realize that they don’t need to focus on the follow through as much. Your body will naturally follow through. But theoretically once you have braced, pulled through, released the disc at full extension and your head hasn’t moved, then you would follow through with the left side of your body that would bring the head up and your left leg around to the side of your body. Watch slow motion drives of Eagle. He crushes and almost never goes through or around his brace.
This is the one thing I struggle with. All the guys I play with tell me if I can get it down I will be throwing out to 400 plus. I'm all arm at the moment when I throw and I average 300 to 320 feet. I can't wait for this to click for me.
seabas22 this is funny to me. That’s like saying Matsuyama has the most prestige form ever and nothing can deviate. Of course in any sport there will be those at the top that do not have exact “traditional” form but are the sport’s greatest. Every great sport the top athletes have unique and fantastic ways of reaching new heights. This is for the masses.
@@TheAnglePickleball Is it not a myth? Not everybody tries to keep the head down. Some do like Feldberg and he now has a fused spine, and Will Schusterick has a shoulder injury. I also injured my back from that advice. Golf studies have shown that keeping the head slows club head speed thru impact and restricts range of motion. Here is David Wiggins saying to keep the head up! His head only appears to stay down as a byproduct of throwing on hyzer and being in dynamic upright balance to the G-forces pulling on his body. Keeping the head down is not an intention, keeping yourself in dynamic upright balance to the shot should be your intention. Avery Jenkins also says to keep the chin up. th-cam.com/video/ywEyfD1zTtQ/w-d-xo.htmlm45s
It matters not. I am trying to instruct people for them to get over certain distance limitations and misconceptions. Feldberg and Schusterick may or may not have injuries and you may have tried to implement something into your form that hurt your back. Regardless in the grand scheme of sports instruction keeping a head centered over the hit zone is sound advice for basics of form. As you proceed with speed and timing your head may or may not continue with your body but again, the vast majority is leading with their head and upper body and they need to leave those in a more steady position to correct their form misconceptions. Thanks for the comments.
You know what's funny about this? If you could imagine practicing your throw in public. Who was it...Seinfeld, that made the comparison of the public acceptance of the imaginary practice of golf vs, say, bowling?

Not only that, but the forehand is almost identical to the top hand in a normal baseball swing. The similarities between the sports are crazy.

If someone told me it was baseball but batting switch years ago I probably would have been throwing 500+ but now I am slowly inching up to the 450+ zone. Timing and bracing is everything!
Just when you think this sport can't get any more geeky . . .. !! Well done. Thank-you.
Suzanne Wharton that’s right! I’m geekin it up over here 🤟
This confirms my theory of why I am RHBH and LHFH. Left handed baseball player. Tried learning LHBH and RHFH with minimal success so far.
im a lefty that plays golf and bats righty....this is perfect....im jacked up!!!!
I think I finally understand about useing the hips. Just standing in my livingroom swinging my arm, it felt a lot more explosive with a little bit of hip movement. Thanks a lot, keep up the good work :)
Aedan Hill that’s great! I am often caught in my house doing this because switch hitting is hard 😂😂😂
Shayne good to see you on videos again. Very informative. My problem is timing on forehands. i can throw forehand easily. I seem to be way early on my weightshift . To the leftside very early lose my acceleration. Hope to see you at Vista,. HELP
Cool tutorial, this was actually really helpful to see the link between a baseball-style motion and throwing a disc.
This is a great video ... more helpful to me than even the famed beto drill ! Thanks !
Jaime Perry so glad it helped!
I just stumbled upon this video and thought “He looks familiar.” Then it hit me, warming up the morning of the Mesa City Championship. It was great practicing with you and a great video here! Hopefully I can learn how to use my lower body better.
Flyin Tanner haha yes dude! Hopefully you can because it’s much easier than all arm muscling it! 😂😂😂
I just wanna hang out at your grandma's house. Tri tip and corn!
Super good and easy to understand! Great feed to work with on the field. Thanks for the video! very appreciated
Tobias Schulz #79288 thanks man! Field work is my favorite!
My and my wife started to practis your tutorials forhand and backand. And we started to get disc to fly.
Dude, tremendous video. Its really starting to put some pieces together for me. Now I need to check out your forehand video cuz mine sux.
TwoBuck Chuck I’m glad it helped! Forehands are my favorite for sure :D
Great video! I’ve been struggling for years with weight shift and using hips. It still hasn’t clicked for me but I think I’m starting to understand it with this!
Great thoughts. Always knew my timing was a bit off. I think this should really help
Proud Infidel stop. You’re making my mouth water! Sam’s Club is sold out!
Great explanation...
Angle :)
Fantastic instruction! Thank you so much....
Thanks for warching! Hope it helps!
Shout out to Grass Valley! I grew up there but now live in Maryland. How is Condon park going these days?
I haven’t been back in about a year but last time I was there it had a lot of trees taken down due to bark beetles! There’s no place like home though!
Such a good video. Thanks bro.
Thanks I enjoy my NEW discgolf playing
I'm so happy : )
It helps so much
This tutorial helps me a lot !! Thank you for that video.
Great content, very helpful.
"Oops my grandma is going to kill me" 😂😂 Awesome Video Keep It Up!
CoppFunk 12 😂😂😂 I may be 30 but my grandma is still scary!
I can here to see if someone made the comment first, lol.
Now I had to listed for it...lol
This is exactly what I needed!
Drake Langston glad to hear it and hope it helps!
Same problem I have my lower body is so quiet because I'm used to moving on the opposite side from baseball and golf
Manuel Loza it sucks doesn’t it!? Haha. It takes a huge commitment to get it down but it is possible.
The foot goes to the right of the braced leg.
great video man! wish I saw this when I started instead trying to understand my friends kinda hollow explainations "Just do like this blalblalbalbla" :'D
fifthfloorwanker right!? Me too :/ I wish I could go back and tell myself all this on the first day I started playing!
thanks for this explanation
Nice work, Shane
Wesley Warren thanks man!
Nice video. Curious as to your recommendations for a speed gun and I guess a net to use to work on the quicker throw? Thanks!
Vista Disc Golf so it depends if you want to go budget on the net. You can make one out of pvc pipe from Home Depot and just buy netting. Otherwise a soccer style net will work. Then a Pocket Radar baseball radar gun is best but they are pretty expensive unfortunately.
The Angle Disc Golf Thanks for the info. I’ll check that out.
Where do I get one of those big sticks you're swinging??
Ebpham4 hardware store! It’s just a pole from a rake without a rake attached.
@@TheAnglePickleball thank you!! Your videos are super helpful!
Thank you so much! I’m glad they are helpful!
Lol
Bryson Cook I wish everyone was so fortunate... Myself included!
How far do you throw?
Thanks for the video.
Glenn Carter my max was 400 for a while but recently I have been able to get to 475 pretty consistently. That has enabled me to throw 375-400 foot golf shots with pretty good accuracy and ease!
Thank you! Keep up the good work.
John H you know it! Thanks for watching.
The 270 degree rotation was a good note , not really highlighted on other instruction videos.
Great vid. #saved.
Hope y'all are ok in GV right now, btw. 🙏🏿
Thx!!
You need to sell shirts with "It's a CHAIN OF EVENTS" printed over an image of a basket.
BillFromAZ i can actually make that a thing... 😂😂😂
@@TheAnglePickleball please do and let me know if you do... I would buy one.
thx very nice vid =)
Thank You !!
Harri Pekkonen you’re welcome!
What about follow through?
Justin, send me a video at theanglediscgolf@gmail.com and I will point to some things that you specifically can work on! :)
@@TheAnglePickleball as soon as I can get back out I will try to get something together.
Sounds good!
I promise I will try. I,m 51...
Keeping the Head Down is Myth: www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133759
seabas22 this is funny to me.
@@TheAnglePickleball The head and upper body can only lead the throw if they were sent or tipped over off balance that way from the ground up.

You know what's funny about this? If you could imagine practicing your throw in public. Who was it...Seinfeld, that made the comparison of the public acceptance of the imaginary practice of golf vs, say, bowling?
