Of course I get winded a lot quicker these days. Just running back and fourth about 20ft and the planting and going back the other way. Trying to get the feel of horizontal planting.

I've watched dozens and dozens of instructional DG videos and this is the first time anyone's told me to keep the body weight behind the plant foot and not have the upper body drift forward. Still not sure how to actually do this in real life but looking forward to some field work on this point soon.
Yeah, there's so many bad videos out there. I would think this should be the basics but it's never explained and it hurts so many people that don't know it.
I've been trying to figure out how to get the heel rotation for a long time now. I tried what your video is about and it just came naturally. Turned out the problem is that is was planting vertically rather than horizontally. I hope I can transfer this knowledge into my game thanks

This is exactly what I've been working on this week, this video actually really helped understand the why. I would also say, for myself, and this may help some people, shorten the length of your slide step into the brace, I almost instantly saw 30-50 feet of improvement by just slowing down and shortening the last step a few inches.

Hello again, I watched about 5 minutes in and thought it was fair to give you some things to ponder as you are figuring out how the biometric machine works. Explore “weight transfer” in golf or baseball swing. The dynamic balance being back during the stride allows the back knee-to-toe extension to fuel the front hip just as the stride toe is landing. That triggers the beginning of weight moving to the front leg, to allow the body to rotate on the “swing axis” from heel-to-head. You can feel weight transfer with a baseball bat by trying to swing with weight back, then do it while up on front leg. The axis will light up with crispy fast rotation.
Here is another thing to ponder. By suggesting the body’s momentum stop hard against a braced leg, is asking for inevitable injury. Kinetic energy moving through body never stops it just gets amplified with gravity-fueled balance movements. By learning about “weight transfer” you will learned that the knee never has to take all that force because the body is instead centering more on hip area to boost the rotational forces. And if what I am saying is triggering curiosity, explore the way golf and baseball swings use shoulder tilt to rotate at shoulders while head and hips stayed dynamically centered. A throw is a balance:counter-balance movement using gravity strategically to transfer weight transfer and engage rotational forces. Happy discing!

Thank you Ben! This is one side step closer me to a better snap, I've been playing disc golf for around 20 years and can power pull around 260ft-280ft but I'm working on a good lagging shot with snap and this is hopefully the last thing needed in my form to get me to or over 350ft!

This is a great video. I understand bracing now.. Trying to correct my form - I can. move forward and stop myself and feel the brace, I can do a stand still and rotate. Now I need a drill on how to transfer the energy - a drill of combining the brace, the stop and how to get the brace to move my arm around. I don't have it yet so I am just stopping and the energy is not flowing into twisting my torso and arm back around? any advice or seen any drill for this out there? Thanks!
I’ll try this out. I knew I had some sort of problem with brace because I kept running of the tee pad after the shot and I knew that power could transfer that power to my disc.

THIS. In my now (slightly over) one year of regular disc golf, I've had about 3 different 'epiphany' moments that were all the same - "slow EVERYTHING down and make sure you plant on the inside edge of the ball of your right foot". And, honestly, it's helped me immensely every time I commit to it - it forces me to plant horizontally, and I inevitably discover that my backhands have 20+ more feet of distance while also feeling like I'm only putting 80% of my power into the throw, so they come out more consistently on the right angle/line as well... now I just gotta figure out how to avoid having to have this 'epiphany' a fourth time...
A mental image that's helped me is pretending there's a 'block' on the tee pad where I want my plant to be, then making my whole run up just a slow, deliberate motion that ends with 'sliding' my plant foot into the side of that imaginary 'block'

Wow! I think you nailed it, Ben. Thank you! I can’t wait to try this out. I would love to hear more from you on the spinning of the foot mechanics to release the braced tension. In the past I have struggled with meniscus tears in my right knee, so any advise would be appreciated.
Thank you so much for saying that John!! The rotation of the front foot to release tension is very important, but it will also happen naturally if your front hip is firing correctly and you’re rotating around your center. To rotate your hips in a powerful way, you have to bring that heel down to the ground when your front hip rotates, and that’ll make it easy to spin on this heel. Learn about hip rotation first, and try this from a one step drill and GO SLOW. Be really careful as you go into this and make sure you’ve got the release down before you try it at even half speed!
@@BensBigDrive Thanks, Ben. I'll definitely go slow from now on, as I've locked up my knee too many times in the past! So if I understand correctly, it sounds like you're saying that the mechanical timing of the front foot during the brace goes like this: 1) inner ball of foot / big toe touches first during initial brace; 2) rolls across ball of foot / toes to outer edge of foot during the start of the spin; 3) heel drops to complete the spin and release tension. If the above is correct, this would also mean that there's a crucial micro-spin that happens at the base of the foot as the pivot point for the entire body - all of which happens in milliseconds - but is critical to getting correct for the rest of the body to pivot around.
Yes John, I would encourage you to focus on hip rotation, because all of those things are happening within such a small time frame that there's no way you could consciously make all of those happen, you have to be doing the big things right and those little things will fall into place. You seem to be on the right track, just take those tiny things you've seen and ask "what bigger, conscious thing could I do that would make all of those things happen?" I hope that helps!

How do you account for the "Brinster Hop" adding distance for people like Scott Stokely (in his my form is not perfect video)? I personally find that adding that jump gets my body into the right place, but I am interested in what you think is happening.
I really like this question because it made me think, but as it pertains to this video, Steve and Scott are still keeping that over their middle and bracing when they do they hop, I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone because you’re inviting in that up and down motion which could cause you to lose balance and throw off of your heels, but what you do in your x-step is way more flexible than how you plant so if it works for you it’s likely a rhythm thing and that’s great!

Man, I am a perfect example of someone who doesn’t keep their weight on their back foot when they plant. It just causes the hips to initiate/ rotate early causing rounding. If you need an example of what not to do, I can send you some videos 😢. I remember a video from a few years ago that the lower body is the same as hitting a baseball. Thanks for the video! Going to work on keeping the weigh on the back foot when I land.
Dude! Relating the plant to a cut or fake maneuver in sports totally changes my way of thinking about the plant. If you just looked at my foot when I plant, I plant correctly, horizontally, but it's not really. I have a really really long plant stride to compensate for the fact that I'd otherwise fall over my plant because it's actually vertical. It sounds like I need to actually push back like the cut maneuver and I won't have to take as long a stride and therefore will be able to rotate my hips better. I cannot wait to get out to a field to try this.
That’s a great way to think about it, it really is all about setting up your feet for a strong hip rotation! I hope you find some success in the field!
It's taken me like two or three "laps" of overloading my brain with technique information online to finally understand the brace by experiencing it in the easiest possible way - Check out Loopghost video of the one leg drill, push your foot into the ground (basically bouncing) as the disc is coming into the power pocket and voilá. Feels like power out of nowhere! Great video, Ben!
Ben, Your disc golf advice and analysis seem to be better than almost anything else I've seen. I guess my only question would be how you've figured out so much useful info at a young age? It's one thing to know how to do something, and a different skill set to know how to teach it, and you seem to excel on the teaching side too. If you keep teachin' I'll keep watchin'.

Seems like a lot of guys with good forehands have spent some time playing baseball, and already understand that there's a lot more than an arm involved in throwing.

I have always felt my plant foot was one of my biggest issues but have never really seen any content covering it. This video makes total sense. The X-step was a little odd to me as I played baseball my whole life but the "load" concepts are similar as far as exploding by keeping your weight back like when you're hitting. Flipping the direction of that loading has been a weird feeling to me haha Great vid! Needed it.

@@tsutamorisan yeah there would be 0 brace if it's the bottom. I think the important language here is plant with your toe, and brace on your heel using the stomping motion and not just "don"t stomp".
Ben, you're on to something...I saw your other video about plant foot and this is my problem and your suggestion there about a one step until it feels natural I will try. For me personally because I have been planting vertically since I started playing when I correct (in slow mo) and make sure plant foot is horizontal it feels like almost like plant foot is so horizontal its backwards...and this feeling throws everything off (my disc going up and nowhere) man I thought learning ball golf was hard...frustrating too because Im a tennis player who was lauded for his one-handed backhand so I thought this backhand thing would be easy...not. Anyway my short game, putting is above average for 1 1/2 years into it but lacking distance when I know I should at least have 300-350 consistently. I also have an issue with rotating on my heal, my knee hurts which tells me Im doing it wrong.
THIS is the stuff I have been missing! Trying to hit 400 feet and got stuck at 350 with all upper body and full sending every time. Had to start back from the bottom and figure out that dang footwork!
the basketball analogy where when they crossover a guy they do it horizontally with their feet so the feet and the floor is really what gives them that extra boost etc..

I'm sure you've seen the whole "crush the can" drill. I've always had trouble squaring what I see pros doing coming in horizontal, and what the smart folks advocating crush the can are saying.
Yes, that's the easiest way to do it, especially because if you're rotating that front hip, that will straighten your leg and put that heel in the ground!

Having your feet too wide can make it harder to rotate your hips which might be why you saw extra distance! Thanks so much for watching!

This is a great video. I understand bracing now.. Trying to correct my form - I can. move forward and stop myself and feel the brace, I can do a stand still and rotate. Now I need a drill on how to transfer the energy - a drill of combining the brace, the stop and how to get the brace to move my arm around. I don't have it yet so I am just stopping and the energy is not flowing into twisting my torso and arm back around? any advice or seen any drill for this out there? Thanks!
I’ll try this out. I knew I had some sort of problem with brace because I kept running of the tee pad after the shot and I knew that power could transfer that power to my disc.

THIS. In my now (slightly over) one year of regular disc golf, I've had about 3 different 'epiphany' moments that were all the same - "slow EVERYTHING down and make sure you plant on the inside edge of the ball of your right foot". And, honestly, it's helped me immensely every time I commit to it - it forces me to plant horizontally, and I inevitably discover that my backhands have 20+ more feet of distance while also feeling like I'm only putting 80% of my power into the throw, so they come out more consistently on the right angle/line as well... now I just gotta figure out how to avoid having to have this 'epiphany' a fourth time...
A mental image that's helped me is pretending there's a 'block' on the tee pad where I want my plant to be, then making my whole run up just a slow, deliberate motion that ends with 'sliding' my plant foot into the side of that imaginary 'block'

Wow! I think you nailed it, Ben. Thank you! I can’t wait to try this out. I would love to hear more from you on the spinning of the foot mechanics to release the braced tension. In the past I have struggled with meniscus tears in my right knee, so any advise would be appreciated.
Thank you so much for saying that John!! The rotation of the front foot to release tension is very important, but it will also happen naturally if your front hip is firing correctly and you’re rotating around your center. To rotate your hips in a powerful way, you have to bring that heel down to the ground when your front hip rotates, and that’ll make it easy to spin on this heel. Learn about hip rotation first, and try this from a one step drill and GO SLOW. Be really careful as you go into this and make sure you’ve got the release down before you try it at even half speed!
@@BensBigDrive Thanks, Ben. I'll definitely go slow from now on, as I've locked up my knee too many times in the past! So if I understand correctly, it sounds like you're saying that the mechanical timing of the front foot during the brace goes like this: 1) inner ball of foot / big toe touches first during initial brace; 2) rolls across ball of foot / toes to outer edge of foot during the start of the spin; 3) heel drops to complete the spin and release tension. If the above is correct, this would also mean that there's a crucial micro-spin that happens at the base of the foot as the pivot point for the entire body - all of which happens in milliseconds - but is critical to getting correct for the rest of the body to pivot around.
Yes John, I would encourage you to focus on hip rotation, because all of those things are happening within such a small time frame that there's no way you could consciously make all of those happen, you have to be doing the big things right and those little things will fall into place. You seem to be on the right track, just take those tiny things you've seen and ask "what bigger, conscious thing could I do that would make all of those things happen?" I hope that helps!

How do you account for the "Brinster Hop" adding distance for people like Scott Stokely (in his my form is not perfect video)? I personally find that adding that jump gets my body into the right place, but I am interested in what you think is happening.
I really like this question because it made me think, but as it pertains to this video, Steve and Scott are still keeping that over their middle and bracing when they do they hop, I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone because you’re inviting in that up and down motion which could cause you to lose balance and throw off of your heels, but what you do in your x-step is way more flexible than how you plant so if it works for you it’s likely a rhythm thing and that’s great!

Man, I am a perfect example of someone who doesn’t keep their weight on their back foot when they plant. It just causes the hips to initiate/ rotate early causing rounding. If you need an example of what not to do, I can send you some videos 😢. I remember a video from a few years ago that the lower body is the same as hitting a baseball.

Dude! Relating the plant to a cut or fake maneuver in sports totally changes my way of thinking about the plant. If you just looked at my foot when I plant, I plant correctly, horizontally, but it's not really. I have a really really long plant stride to compensate for the fact that I'd otherwise fall over my plant because it's actually vertical. It sounds like I need to actually push back like the cut maneuver and I won't have to take as long a stride and therefore will be able to rotate my hips better. I cannot wait to get out to a field to try this.
That’s a great way to think about it, it really is all about setting up your feet for a strong hip rotation! I hope you find some success in the field!

It's taken me like two or three "laps" of overloading my brain with technique information online to finally understand the brace by experiencing it in the easiest possible way - Check out Loopghost video of the one leg drill, push your foot into the ground (basically bouncing) as the disc is coming into the power pocket and voilá. Feels like power out of nowhere! Great video, Ben!

Ben, Your disc golf advice and analysis seem to be better than almost anything else I've seen. I guess my only question would be how you've figured out so much useful info at a young age? Seems like a lot of guys with good forehands have spent some time playing baseball, and already understand that there's a lot more than an arm involved in throwing.

I love it. This was a definite " ah-ha" moment for me.
I have always felt my plant foot was one of my biggest issues but have never really seen any content covering it. This video makes total sense. The X-step was a little odd to me as I played baseball my whole life but the "load" concepts are similar as far as exploding by keeping your weight back like when you're hitting. Flipping the direction of that loading has been a weird feeling to me haha Great vid! Needed it.

That stomp motion is actually pretty important. Drew literally does it lol.
The motion is a stomp, but where are his shoes worn out? On the bottom or on the outside?
@@tsutamorisan yeah there would be 0 brace if it's the bottom. I think the important language here is plant with your toe, and brace on your heel using the stomping motion and not just "don"t stomp".

Ben, you're on to something...I saw your other video about plant foot and this is my problem and your suggestion there about a one step until it feels natural I will try. For me personally because I have been planting vertically since I started playing when I correct (in slow mo) and make sure plant foot is horizontal it feels like almost like plant foot is so horizontal its backwards...and this feeling throws everything off (my disc going up and nowhere) man I thought learning ball golf was hard...frustrating too because Im a tennis player who was lauded for his one-handed backhand so I thought this backhand thing would be easy...not. Anyway my short game, putting is above average for 1 1/2 years into it but lacking distance when I know I should at least have 300-350 consistently. I also have an issue with rotating on my heal, my knee hurts which tells me Im doing it wrong.

When you spin your plant foot in your follow through, you should be spinning on your heel correct?
Yes, that's the easiest way to do it, especially because if you're rotating that front hip, that will straighten your leg and put that heel in the ground!
