I haven’t tried the mono loop to the fly but I will give that a try. I guess I could run mono loop on both flys when running two by leaving enough tag end for the second fly.
Great Q, typically it depends on the depth of the water I am fishing. Example being 20’ of water and pegging 1’ off bottom, I will have approx 19’ of 3x and 24” of swivel, creating a leader that is a total of 21’. If I have to peg more than 50% down the leader, I will cut my butt section down shorter to make it easier to cast and fish.
Great and very helpful video. The Chironomid setup works well in the alpine lakes of California! Being new to fishing Chironomids I had a quick question, what size swivel do you use? I really like the idea of a swivel somewhat helping the flies get down. I saw SA has micro swivels are those ok or too small?
@@flyfishuniversity111gotcha. I was thinking of making some up and putting them in my leader wallet but I guess it is best to just set it up on the spot. Thanks!
Great videos! I've been using a sage foundation 9ft 5 weight and I'm looking to get a new chironomid specific rod for my small pontoon boat. Could you recommend anything? Are faster rods better? I've only ever owned the sage and a 9ft 6 weight winston vapor. Thanks!
Thank you Kevin, if you are looking for a chironomid fishing in specific (especially from a float tube or pontoon), lean more in the direction of a 9'6" or 10' rod. I do not fish super fast rods for chironomid fishing, or lake fishing in general, because I like to be able to a) protect light tippet with the back end of the rod and b) open up my loop a bit when I'm throwing long leaders. Hope this helps!
Amazing and informative video thanks so much for posting this learned a lot!!
Thanks so much for watching!!

So do you move the bobber up and down to change the depth of where you want the fly to sit?
Absolutely!
@@flyfishuniversity111 ten four! How long of 3X leader will you typically run?

Of course!! Thanks for watching!
Good information. Thanks! How long do you make the leader sections above and below the swivel?
Thanks Matt, it all depends on the depth of water you're fishing! Usually I will make it approximately as long as the depth of water I'm fishing!

4 perfection knots on the 3X leader? Or a small piece of mono 15lb with 4 knots and then tie the 3X leader to that?
great video!
Thank you!
Thanks for the good info. What reel do you recommend as a substitute for the Ross Cimarron 2 since it has been discontinued?
Great question, I'd highly suggest the Animas II, it is a beast! That, or the Evolution R.
@@flyfishuniversity111 I appreciate your help.
