What is loch style stillwater fly fishing?

- After our last several stillwater videos, we had a lot of requests for us to do video introducing loch style fly fishing. In this video we do just that. You will learn about setting up drifts and using drogues. In the last half of the video, Connor and I put it into practice and catch a bunch of fish along the way.

Loved your book and thanks for the video. One minor suggestion: gunwale is pronounced like “gunnel”. It’s one of those crazy nautical terms. Also look up boatswain. It’s pronounced “bo’son.” Keep up your great work.

That was a good quality, information packed production. Really enjoyed seeing you guys fishing like this. I`m Scottish and fish our lochs in that exact way. I only use a drogue if its unavoidable, as they can be a pain if a fish takes you behind the boat.
The Scottish term to describe the hang is `on the dangle` as its like dangling a carrot in front of a Donkey.

Excellent! I need to look into this more as I do stillwater fishing from my kayak.
You could probably use a smaller cone shaped drift sock and place it on the stern of your kayak. You would just need to rig up a rope at your side that is tied to the back of the drogue so you can easily pull the drogue out without needing to twist around to pull it from the water.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 Thanks for the reply! I have a trolly system install on it for an anchor, but it is also designed for rigging kayak sized drift socks as well. I just need to buy a drift sock and try out this lock style of drifting. I'm looking forward to you tying up some go to stillwater flies.

Great info, thanks for that. Wondering if as a rule of thumb when starting the day with this style if you're typically fishing a larger fly like a streamer or leech on the point, along with a smaller dropper up the leader like a soft-hackle or other stillwater wet fly? Really helps to see on video how fast you're retrieving too. Thanks.
Gary, I choose my flies based more on insect activity, season, the type of stillwater I’m fishing, and the wind, which also helps dictate the method. I sometimes mix fly type but I’m more likely to focus only on nymphs or only on streamer/lure patterns as I tend to fish them at different speeds.

Great video and information. What size boat and motor do you recommend for this type of fishing and in the windy conditions like in your video? Would a john boat work or would you need a v hull?
I used to have a 10’ pram with a 4 hp outboard that I fished in a lot of crazy conditions. Now I have the 16’ v hull with a 25 hp. It is definitely a safer and better drifting boat. Typically v hulls will be better loch style boats than a flat bottom but you can usually make most boats work.

Just a small note to avoid pissing off any ancient mariners: its not pronounced "gun-whales", they're "gun-uls."

Devin, in the last shot of the video it looks like you were fishing a tandem rig. Is there any difference in the rigging of the flies when comparing loch style fishing to stillwater fishing? i.e. difference between flies etc?
You can fish the same rigs you would elsewhere. We did a leader video two videos ago. That video shows you how I was rigged. A lot of the flies I use have UK or European influence but the same flies you have success with here would work as well.
Hey Devin, I really want to try this style this spring. I was fortunate enough to have my wife buy me the Lamson Liquid 3 pack reel and spool set. I want to get them rigged up specifically for loch style fishing. I don't have any lake or sinking lines. Just some floating stuff for my other gear. What three lines would you recommend I purchase for those spools?
I have about 2 dozen lines in my bag so it’s hard to pick but if I had to I’d probably say fast intermediate, type 3, type 7, midge tip, type 5 in that order. I know that’s five but if you get more that’s probably the sequence I’d follow assuming you already have a floating line.

@@skylarholliman1982 the Cortland lines are a good place to start as are the SA Sonar lines we have as well.
Two questions: from a float tube or single person pontoon boat would you still but the boat crosswise to the wind or put your back to the wind? Would you deploy a drogue from either type of personal craft?
Gary, you would still use a drogue. You may want to slightly downsize it if it slows the boat down too much for the winds you experience locally. The drogue would simply go behind you and the pontoons would be parallel to the wind instead of perpendicular as with a boat.

What type of fish finder would you recommend for loch style fishing?
I have a hummingbird helix 7. It’s pretty feature intense. Really most will take care of you. I use it for depth and temperature more than actual fish finding.
so how were you rig up 1 fly 2-or 3? distance in leader lengths, if you don't mind sharing or is this on one of the cd's

Hey Devin, what reel were you using in this video?
It's an Airflo Switch. We have an Orvis cassette reel that is very similar in the shop and we will also be adding cassette reels from Hardy and Greys as we receive them.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 do you personally use cassettes when competing in loch sessions? The Hardy ASR looks like the best I’ve seen so far, I think it’s Howard Croston designed as well.
@@devonbustard1623 Yes. I use cassette reels for all my lake fishing in or out of competition.

I plan on covering it in more detail in a future video. It’s just glo brite floss wrapped around the fly line and superglued in place. You can whip finish it by wrapping over a tippet loop and then threading the end of the thread through the loop.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 Thanks--that's helpful. I'm also interested in the placement of the marker...it sounds like it is related to the length of line you need to make the next cast? (I'm used to the term "hang" when using streamers in a river....)... I enjoy river fishing much more than stillwater---this could change things!
@@brucegreenwood2634 The hang marker is 15' away from the tip of the line on all my lines. It doesn't have to do with the length of line for the cast. The marker tells me when I'm nearing the end of the fly line so that I can lift the flies toward the surface and "hang" or stall them near the surface before making my next cast. The lift and hang incites a lot of grabs from reticent fish. I talked a bit more about it and some other stillwater topics in the previous two videos we did as well. Glo brite floss wrapped around the line and superglued.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 sorry to bother you. Quick question. I have the FL Chartreuse #12 in my cart. Can the floss be used to tie bobber stops as well?? I want to tie the sliding adjustable dry dropper rigs as well. If I can have a multi use thread it would be just one less thing to carry & keep track of. Thank you
@@badneed It is thick so I'm guessing you could probably use it for bobber stops though I haven't tried that myself.
