Before i begin, let me tell you that you are the MVP of the year in my book, just for showing how to shut off that aweful beeping!!!! I never knew this!!! THANK YOU!!!!! Literally just went through this on a friend's 04 international box truck, had to give it a spritz of the ole magic in a can on any cold start, no matter the temperature. I also noticed the RPM's dropping out on my scantool, so out came my DVOM, powers and grounds check, found the entire ECM system to be lower voltage than battery voltage, so i found that fuse, which had the holder replaced with crimp on female spade connectors and they disintegrated upon moving it. An inline fuse holder, some solder, self sealing heat shrink, and tape in a can later, that thing runs SO much better, starts every time, and now get 8mpg over the 5 it was getting!
if i was smarter, i would have picked up on the issue in the first crank with the scanner on. after reviewing, it was right there in front of me. live and learn.
@@j.c.smithprojects There's many ways to get to 10, and it doesn't matter how you get there, as long as you do. 5 possible things wrong, 4 things checked, 1 middle of the night idea equals 10, you got there, and that's what matters!
I admire your ability to diagnose and remedy tough problems. I hate electrical issues. I have seen you say you like them because they can lead to getting a good deal on an easy-to-fix truck. TRUE!
Excellent explanation and fixing of a problem and bringing us along multiple days. I knew there was a fuse in the battery box that would burn out for a no start but didn’t know that fuse was for the ecm.
First step in diagnosis is understanding how it's supposed to work when it works properly. Without understanding that first any diagnosis is a uphill Battle. Iv seen that same issue on freightliners a few times battery box is a prime place for corrosion.
I have two of these trucks. An 03 and an 05. The power you're getting from the battery to the ECM and the IDM is referred to as clean power. It is power that is distributed pre-fuse box. The connection you found is critical. Also check your ground connections. They run from the battery, to the starter and from the starter ground lug to the engine block and the frame. Corrosion will corrupt the continuity and give you the same type issue that corrode fuse connection did. A steel brush clean up goes far on those connections.
At the dealer, we found lots of problems with that ECM power/ground harness. We got in the habit of hardwiring the three plus connectors that international put throughout the whole length of the harness making it essentially one whole fused harness running directly from the battery box to where it needed to go. I believe there were connectors at the battery box, the flywheel housing, and the engine bay and all were prone to corrosion, poor pin fitment, general damage, and bad crimps leading to all sorts of weird issues.
Great video J.C.Smith really enjoy your way of troubleshooting problems with this truck and the fix to make it start. Thanks for sharing stay safe J.C.Smith.
Hello from the Netherlands . I like the video with your diagnostics and troubleshooting. simple and effective without a lot of hassle or expensive tool i like that very much . thanks for the video JC . Sincerely, Hollandduck
Thanks for this very educational video. Tomorrow I will check my ECM power supply connections. My truck can’t stay running. It starts but I feel the ECM keeps losing power then resets turning the engine off. Even the fuel lift pump registers 2.4v. I will check that harness nest😂
Thanks for the informative video, I’ve had this issue since I bought my project truck, i just happened to check the fuses like you did they were fine, but the previous owner put the fuse back into the connector wrong I just happened to catch it. If I wouldn’t have paid extra attention to it I would still be looking for the problem. Thanks so much you saved me thousands.
I sure miss the days when all you needed was to turn the crank and it started. No electronics except a shutoff solenoid. Fuel, compression and rotation. LOL! Showing my age aren't I? Nice job tracking down the problem. Cheers Terry
Just goes to show that it doesn’t have to be worst case scenario every time a vehicle doesn’t start up. I’m sure a lot of repair shops (myself included🤣) who wouldn’t know any better would recommend replacing the HPOP, Injectors, etc. etc. Glad it was a cheap and easy fix, can’t beat that!! Great work J.C👍

Amazing a crusty little fuse like that was able to cause a cold-no-start. Surprised it had any connection at all looking like that. Least it was something simple
In my experience if the engine is warm and won't start but will when cold it would most likely be the high pressure oil pump. The corroded fuse and cables in the battery box has caused a few headaches for me. I would imagine it is more common for truck that live in colder climates that use salt.
Dear J.C. Smith projects. 👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always. Congrats for finding and fixing the problem. 2) Please kindly allow me to suggest to not have so many keys on your keychain. The weight pulling on the ignition switch is able to wear the lock out respectively destroy the ignition switch. Even more more if it is one of the newer infrared keys/switches/locks (please don't ask me why I know, sigh). Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you.
the keys you saw were on a carabiner. there are keys for multiple properties and multiple trucks that i drive on a regular basis. i use the carabiner so i can remove the keys im using at the time and lay the rest to the side. i dont like hearing all those keys jingling as i drive. since i wasnt actually driving in this video, i didnt remove them.

Really enjoy your videos JC. I am in the market for a Class 6 or 7 truck for trailer towing. I see quite a few International trucks for sale and remember a comment in one of your older videos about Max Force engines being problematic. Looks like International got in some hot water a while ago with how they were going to attempt to meet the emission requirements. Are there years of International trucks you would recommend I avoid? Keep up the great work!!
I absolutely hated the DT466E in my first beverage truck. Wouldn’t start for nothin under 50 degrees. Many cans of ether were used because, well, it was being phased out and nobody cared about it 😂
Where the fuse is where you clean it the pigtail itself. Could you take like a ziplock bag or something similar to cover it and use a zip tie to close it up to protect it from the outside elements Do you think that would help it from corrosion problem some. Just wondering if that would help from getting corrosion as much?
Have you by chance had a dt466 not turn off with the key? All gauges shut down and powers off but truck keeps running. Changed both relays under the hood a few in the fuse box on pass side. Still doing it. It’s an 09 Durastar MaxxForce
either the ecm isnt shutting down or its running of of oil instead of fuel. i would start with a pinout of the ecm. check powers AND grounds. find out if the pins that supply power are still energized with the key off. i would have to look at the schematic to be more helpful.
everything expands and contracts due to temperature. the load put on that fuse and terminals along with ambient temperature was enough to cause it make and break connection because of that expansion.
