Hi JC, you're well down the path of hot rod hauler, but I suspect your good lady has her heart on a toterhome. So I suggest: Finish the hot rod hauler as planned, Buy yourself a good or repairable pusher schoolie like your parts bus from 3 years ago, Flip the drivetrain, so relocate drive axle to very rear of chassis, reverse the diff, put the motor and gearbox forward of the drive axle under the floor, Relocate cooler pack further forward or to front of bus if it's not already there, Shorten the rear of the body to clear space over the back axle for a gooseneck coupling, expose rear of chassis for hitch plate etc, The rest of the body is a standard schoolie to RV conversion. Put a fixed divan over the motor like the pusher RV's (toastie in winter, kills the noise, easy access for maintenance, and brownie points from Mrs JC for not having to make up beds every day). You can raise the roof, step the chassis, or both for more headroom, and you could make the front into a truck style toterhome by moving the bus door further back and replacing the bus body drivers compartment with a cabover cab unit.

Clean it up and use it for a boat anchor.

Toter home with a garage would be interesting. Would be interesting how you would do it if you wanted a pass through from cab to rear.

Detroit Series 50 out of a city public transit bus. Straight 4 cyl that you can turn up quite a bit! That cmshiuld fit right up under that cab!!!

J C I like your wife's idea too .Put the engine back where it was at to create less headaches with reliability of engine due too not being in TBE weather all the time .

Hard choice. Any way you can make tge mechanical straight 6 engine work, and make the wife happy? I like the totorhome idea, it just the driveline to sort out. Second choice would be the 6.7 powerstroke with few mods, depending on year.

I like the toterhome idea, but IMO the decision will be much easier once the rear axle is in and you start looking at your potential engine locations, driveshaft orientations, and crossmember/ carrier bearing needs. I hope I'm wrong because THIS as a toterhome would be awesome! Edit: I forgot about the engine question. Cummins. Reliable, long lasting, and better to have low in a frame than a V-anything. I like the DT466 too, but it's a lot heavier without much advantage. Definitely keeping my eye on this project!

7.3 powerstroke. Parts are very available. Id do a hybrid. Add a sleeper on the back with generator and mini split. Maybe something like a green apu and then use the back for a hot rod hauler.

Once you removed the bed, there is a subframe under it that has a rubber bushing. You did not know what that was for. The subframe is there to protect the bed from being ripped apart from the stress the truck would put on it. Monroe says not to operate the truck with the tailgate down to prevent the bed coming apart.

You just needed one part J.C and and you took it all apart LOL. I can see why from what you said. Not too many usable parts left.

I would do a modern common rail Cummins 6.7, plenty of power, quiet, fuel efficient, and easy to work on.

I would make sure that cab is nice and comfortable before going for the toterhome idea. Would suck to put in all that work for something that’s not fun on long drives. But either build will be great!

I also vote for DT466 ! Would be perfect for your application

NOT a toterhome if you ever plan to sell it. The ad sites are littered with toterhomes ranging from projects to ready to go. None of them are selling even though everybody says they want one. If it's finished, it won't be exactly what a buyer with money wants. If it's left unfinished, like most JC projects are, nobody will want to put in the money/effort into completing it. That leaves a customer base of broke people who want it for less than the cost of parts. (See project ex-haul for example)

JC i say go with the toter home, you and your wife work extremely hard an do a lot of good in your community behind the scenes. You both deserve a above average hot rod tiny house on wheels.

Dt360. It’s the best of every world. Lighter weight, sleeved engine, dime a dozen in junkyards, so easy to find parts.

i think the toterhome would be an awesome idea. im torn between the 7.3 & 6.7 but i would choose either of the two.

I wouldn't put any power stroke in anything... if you're doing a v8 diesel its gotta be a duramax

I’ve learnt late in life build what has kept you happy in the past. If you go with a tote home have you got a box you can use and modify. Awesome build

this video demonstrates the Absolute Justification of a tele handler.. lining up on the chassis from the back and extending forward to set the cab... omg.. that same job from the side or front would have been a pain.. I need, I need... nice work brother.
