how does the weight impact on the slider? isn't it the spring pushing down in the same way? I think that the 55g saving is negligeable especially on a ton HD :D
Got to say I do like the old how-to videos with a bit of chat. Love the fab work, but it's always learning and understanding the rational behind things that keeps me interested.
My current 2005 Sportster 1200 that I just did this on today had always had cold natured ways. Even on hot temperature days I would have to pull the choke to start the bike and run for a mile or two before I could unchoke it. And I had an irritating decel popping, not to mention that while running at a steady speed I would have stuttering occasionally when the weather is cold out. My previous 2005 Sportster was the exact same way and I should have done this to that one as well. Now I can choke the bike to start it and immediately unshoken and she is at idle and there is no decel popping or cool weather stuttering and she is just smooth... I would and will recommend a dynojet thunder slide kit for any bike you may ever own from this point forward. Hands down DynoJet is the cat's meow.....
I just did this to my 1200 a few days ago. Great tutorial & I agree with DJ’s suggestion on the 170 main jet. On a side note, I was able to do this w/o completely removing the carb.
Hi Del , great video as always and of particular interest to me as I did the 883 to 1200 upgrade on my Sporty a number of years ago and still like to see how other people approach the job. I know I'm a bit late to the party with this but I noticed on the clutch install that you stayed with the standard clutch spring plate with the blue paint identifier on it , as I did , despite reports from different places that a stronger plate was needed to cope with the extra power. Long story short , it slipped when under heavy load going uphill and I ended up installing the upgraded spring plate which fixed the problem. Granted this was a 2008 Sportster , so fuel injected and maybe more power involved but I just thought I'd let you know my experience with it. Great series and excellent presentation from you and ace camerawoman Penny.
Thanks mate, I have heard this, but with a new set of clutch plates and eliminating the damper ring (which gives one extra friction plate), I should be all good, but of course it's pretty easy, if I get any slippage whatsoever, I can swop the spring over in the future! Carbs are so underappreciated, No powercommander needed. easy to service, make the bike sound so much better and smell much better. Damn i miss my old sporty.
carbs used to scare me but as you've shown, they aren't so bad! Nice to see that the screws on yours weren't made of butter and previously installed with what must have been an impact gun HAHA
Ha ha, had my fair share of those.. why o why do people swing on carb screws, they don't shake loose and don't leak.. just makes drama for the next poor guy trying to strip it.!

Another top quality video, is it me but the ‘ sounds’ or cracking threads, squeaking rubber, metal on metal joints tap as they come together, the rattle as a screw is put on a metal surface along with superb close ups video that just makes this channel head and feet above anything else. The self tapping screw to remove the adjustment cap, is it a left hand thread like a stud exractor, also known as "easy out`s"?. The reason i ask is that you screwed it in til it stopped the same as a standard right handed thread?. If it is a right handed thread, it just sounds like some may have difficulty using it?.
It's not threaded mate, the brass plug is just pushed in with a slight interference fit, the screw's just a regular self tapper, you drill a hole in the middle of the cap, lock the screw in to it, and pull the plug out with pliers... the top 5mm of the hole is un-threaded.
I'm definitely curious about the benefits of the thunderslide and jet kit compared to stock carb set up properly jetted. I will be fine tuning mine when it's properly broken in. I'm at 150 miles on my hammer 1275 cylinders and currently using their recommendations for break in period. I'm just looking for maximum acceleration when I feel like ripping it to 60 and passing power.
The condition of this Sporty is pretty amazing. Props to the previous owner for keeping her well maintained, Now the bike finds itself in your shop. That is one very lucky motorcycle. 😄 Thank you Del and Penney for another awesome video. 👍👍
hey del, i noticed you didn’t install the dynojet “thunder nozzle” and the check ball with brass weight, is there a reason for this? i recently installed this same kit in my 00’ sportster 1200, with a 170 main, and i cannot get it to run right no matter what. the instructions also said to install on needle groove #4? please help. thank you

Not an expert on carburation, very far from it! However, from my understanding of how a CV carb works, I can't see how a much lighter slide will help. Their kit obviously compensates for the light slide, by providing a different spring. As an 'old fart', I can still remember SU and Stromberg CV carbs, as used extensively on UK cars. These had an oil-filled damper on the slide, in order to stop it from rising too quickly. Love the video's D&P. Hope the tank pads are still firmly affixed to the Triumph! Hip is now fully mended. New shed arriving tomorrow! Just looking for a project to get my teeth into. Maybe I'll even put it on TH-cam - lol. Much love to you both.
Hey Gary, i guess there is lots of theoretical logic about the light slide.. but they do clearly state that it provides quicker throttle response and more reliable launches off idle, and i guess they should know having developed it.! The tank pads are still stuck fast even after regular washing, or so the new owner tells me.. You should certainly get a project going, even if you just have it off line for you to enjoy.. Go for it mate and keep us posted.!

Well these carbs are made for Harley by Mikuni...and every slide in every Japanese bike carbs has been plastic for the last 25 years, and never had a single problem due to slide wear... i think it's just Harley are behind the times.! plus this bike is 20 years old !

I feel guilty, not being super interested when the old dudes were talking about their bikes of the 50's/60's/70's. I'm their age and older now, and having my fav 80's/90's/00's bikes be the ancient relics of the past, gets tougher every year. I'm sorry, but I'm infinitely more interested in watching a carb rebuild versus a computer software download, so I'm a big hypocrite, dammit. Hee hee :/
ha ha.. as long as it keeps an audience then people will always remember carbs with romance and passion.. Downloads are easy i guess, but just not the same aye. !
Nice video, very useful to me. I've just put a rebuild kit in my CV but haven't changed the slide. Does Dynojet recommend 31/2 turns out on fuel mix, cos mine runs good at 21/2. Just wondering maybe another turn on mine may be even better. Cheers Del. 👊
Hi Simon.. yes the instruction clearly stated 3 1/2 turns out for mixture on my setup, and as it's just a screw turn you can make almost on the fly, then why not give it a try and check the plugs, see what results it gives you.? be interested to know mate..keep me posted.

Over my years turning wrenches (that is a spanner to y'all) I have installed more Dynojet kits than I care to remember. Never a "Dynojet Thunderslide Kit" though. Interesting. The light plastic slide is a good idea, they have been OEM on most Japanese bikes for at least a quarter century. It looks like maybe Mikuni stiffed HD to get rid of a some of their surplus aluminum slides. :) One caveat though, the plastic will wear out sooner than the aluminum, so hang on to the old one. That looks incredibly similar to the Keihin carb on my Kawasaki ZRX! 🤔I would have thought HD would have used their own ones instead of buying them in from Japan! This is a fantastic video though. I had to rejet my own carbs a few weeks back and it's definitely a daunting task. Wish I'd had a video like this one to boost my confidence (though the one you did on the Triumph a while back was definitely a great help). 🙂
Hi David. Whilst this carb does have the HD logo and 'Harley Davidson" actually cast into it, looking at the castings, i'd say it is indeed a Keihin carb made for them under licence, after all, that has to he way cheaper than making your own production line for that one component. ! Yes i imagine it will quaff a little more nectar now, 40% more capacity tends to do that ! but im planing to chop off a fair bit of weight, so maybe that'll compensate a bit..lol!
I went with the CVP Emulsion tube and needle And also a vductor Also shimmed the needle .050 thousands And used the cvp slide spring On the buell its in i went with a 185 main jet And a 46 pilot It works about as well as a Cv carb possibly can
You have got to stop this!! I'm Jonesin' for a Sporty and my wife would not be happy. Not with the three other bikes in my one car garage which can't hold a car :)

There is still a spring pushing down but I believe the spring that comes with the kit is a weaker spring and the lighter slide makes it rise faster

Why didn't you up the pilot jet to a #45 or #48 depending on stock setting?? Three and a half out on the air screw is a lot.

Always prefer carbs, possibly more for nostalgia, but the slow revving old school charm just makes you feel more involved!

@@Butterfly07949 I got mine from the Harley dealer mate, and they import them direct from the USA, the kit was just over £150... perhaps your local Harley dealer has an account with them and can order you one in for your bike??

Over my years turning wrenches (that is a spanner to y'all) I have installed more Dynojet kits than I care to remember. Never a "Dynojet Thunderslide Kit" though. Interesting. The light plastic slide is a good idea, they have been OEM on most Japanese bikes for at least a quarter century. It looks like maybe Mikuni stiffed HD to get rid of a some of their surplus aluminum slides. :) One caveat though, the plastic will wear out sooner than the aluminum, so hang on to the old one.

brought back memories of rebuilding a carb somewhat. I did my quadrajet carb on my 1973 covette years ago. good times.
That looks incredibly similar to the Keihin carb on my Kawasaki ZRX! 🤔I would have thought HD would have used their own ones instead of buying them in from Japan! This is a fantastic video though. I had to rejet my own carbs a few weeks back and it's definitely a daunting task. Wish I'd had a video like this one to boost my confidence (though the one you did on the Triumph a while back was definitely a great help). 🙂
Hi David. Whilst this carb does have the HD logo and 'Harley Davidson" actually cast into it, looking at the castings, i'd say it is indeed a Keihin carb made for them under licence, after all, that has to he way cheaper than making your own production line for that one component. ! Ok...looking good. Wow, a Dyna-Jet kit. Haven't dealt with those since my '99 FXSTC and also working for a HD dealer in parts. I was hoping you'd fire that thing up in this video, but I guess we have to wait! Lol! Look forward to your next video.

I had a Dyno Jet kit installed on my Harley Road King some 18 years ago along with the Vance and Hines and an S&S filter. Thanks to this video I can explain to my wife why....wonderful work, thank you for that!!👍

I went with the CVP Emulsion tube and needle
And also a vductor
Also shimmed the needle .050 thousands
And used the cvp slide spring
On the buell its in i went with a 185 main jet
And a 46 pilot
It works about as well as a Cv carb possibly can
