    A perfect video all around! Great photography, editing, and of course, great subject matter! This was very enjoyable to watch.The most satisfying part of the whole video was watching the lifters slide down into their bores in s.l.o.w. motion :) A well oiled part in a perfectly fitted bore! I hope your New Year is filled with glorious noise from those pipes!

      Thank you very much Tommy, glad you enjoyed the video, we thought it was a fitting end to the project to re-cap the engine build from 2yrs ago. I used specially saved footage to create an end-to-end upload from approx. 3 months at the start of the project... happy with how it turned out and it also helps to realise how much better the bike looks now after a full restoration. Have a Happy New Year and thanks for your support!

      3 weeks?!?! I did a complete S&S 509 cam chest in my '02 Super Glide in like a day and a half. You'll hear 3 hrs, 4hrs. Not when you do all the cleaning on the motor that S&S tells you to do for their warranty. Your dealer is either really backed up or slower than shit.

    10:47 going back to the stock clutch with spring plate. upgraded to screamin eagle clutch pack without spring plate. the pull was insane, so i used the old stock diaphragm spring … of course it doesnt work well with screamin eagle pack but im waiting until it wears out before replacing with all new stock clutch. yes, it will fail in about five years of regular use, but just replace it again … screw performance clutches, i’m 62 years old, i just need a little bar hopper.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont hold a lot of regard for "performance" or competition clutches.. they're a lot about bravado and bragging rights.. largely pointless in a road bike, way too heavy, (as you found) and simply not required unless you're drag racing or hill climbing etc.. just fresh new TRW plates, two extra steels and one extra fiber, and throw out the grenade plate..(which i did) and of course, using the right primary oil make a difference too!

    Thank you for another excellent video. I think I've gotten my self in a pickle and need your advice. Changed the rocker gaskets on the rear cylinder on my '09 Sportster without any real issues. On to the front cylinder and everything was going great . . . until I was torquing down the four main 12 point bolts (1/2 inch, black) in the lower rocker box, when the last one snapped (front cylinder, left side, toward rear). It broke only about 1/16 inch (or less) above surface of head. Nothing to grab on to. Wouldn't be able to drill down straight into it due to frame being in the way. What options do I have? What would you recommend?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hi there, sorry to hear this.. pretty frustrating im sure.. not sure what equipment or skills you have access to, but you could maybe weld a nut on top of the stud and that can act as a bolt head.. if not then you may have to just release the engine mounts and lift the top of the engine across to the left just enough to cleat the frame and get a drill down it from above ! couple of possibilities there maybe ?

    • @bernardlesperance742
      @bernardlesperance742 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Moonfleet41 Thank you. Maybe moving the engine a bit would be an option for me. I'll have to figure out what it would involve in terms of dismantling parts attached to it - how involved it would be. No previous engine work experience and just the tools I needed for the job. Will look around and see what kind of quotes I can get for the job - starting with H-D dealerships as a baseline (which I'm sure will be much higher than I can pay). I did the gasket change myself to save money (obviously) but now it will probably end up costing me a lot more. Wouldn't want the same thing to happen by trying to now do this myself, especially since it sounds pretty involved. Maybe I can find an independent mechanic/machinist that could do it at reasonable cost. Thanks a lot for your suggestions, appreciate it.

    My wife has the same bike, same year, that she purchased in an estate sale. The original owner had the screaming eagle enhancements, and her bike seems really fast. Is there a reasonably simple way to determine if the 1200 conversion was done? A mechanic said he'd have to disassemble the motor to find out, and to me it seemed like if you could remove the spark, put something to measure the cylinder head down-stroke air intake pulled through the spark plug hole that it might tell you within a margin of error if it is 883 or 1200. Just curious if there's a simple way.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That won't work buddy as the length of the stroke is unaffected by changing the pistons, the crank hasn't been changed, so the stroke should be identical... The best way is, perhaps, with a Dyno Run if you have that facility anywhere, an 883 should be making about 45 ft.lbs. of torque and a 1200 should more like 65 ft.lbs. - there's a big difference, that will be conculsive proof!

    • @samking73

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's pretty easy mate, if you're in the UK I'm presuming, just go online and check the MOT history and it'll tell you what engine size it was at first MOT at 3yrs old... also, DVLA will have a record of the change if it's recorded on the V5 as a 1200 and was previously 883, and if you're not in the UK, then you could check the engine number, am sure there's plenty of online information, perhaps even with your local main dealer to find out what it is... just a case of doing a bit of research mate.

  • @throckmorton3705
    @throckmorton3705 ปีที่แล้ว

    how does the 1200 bore kit work with the 833 engine? is the gearbox, crank etc the same as the stock 1200s? seems like you would be adding undue stress to the rest of the engine, but maybe im wrong. i know all those upgrades to the M8 wind up chewing up the stock gearboxes etc.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only difference between the 883 and 1200 engines other than the pistons and pots.. was the front primary sprocket.. they're smaller on the 883 to give lower gearing to help it pull away with so much less power...Other then that, it's the same bottom end! and this then gives a lower geared 1200, making it a lot of fun to ride. (which incidentally, is what the factory decided to do on the XR1200, by using the 883 crank sprocket, they made the better performance figures they wanted for that model.!

    What’s the difference between the hk for the 883 and 1200? I think the 883 has something like 54 hk or something? I’m looking for my first bike atm, I was going to buy a adventure touring bike but I tried a 883 sportster (2006) yesterday and I fell in love with it, I love the smaller frame of it but I felt it was lacking some power! They wanted €4.4k for it and it had only 20k kilometers on it.
    I’ve found a 2004 883 that has had a conversion to 1200 and it only has 12k kilometers on it for €5.5k but it’s a 3 hour drive there so I need to read up on it before I’m going there (and most likely end up buying it) but if it has a little more omph to it than the 883 then I’m sold!

I even saw a vid from lowbrow that changes the cams with an S&S Hooligan kit...they mention that since they have a 2003 sportster they don't have to change the pinion gear. Seems like it would be a pain to change that. Anyway, do I need to change cams with a 1200 upgrade for this 1995 883? What year is the sportster in this vid? Thanks in advance!

      @@Moonfleet41 I have a 1986 1st year Evo Sportster, that was converted by 50 year Certified H-D Tech, his personal bike! It has been lowered, lighten, 140 rear tire, 4 speed chain, S&S carb, it has all 1998 tin, Sun Wheels, etc. I've owned flatheads, panheads, 76 KZ 900, 78 Z1R 1000, & the 86 Sporty is my favorite! I bought this bike in 1998, when I was 48, rode it to Laconia a week later? I am now 75, & I still have the bike? I've ridden a few XLCH Strokers over the years, I think my Bike is more peppy?
      My understanding is when the 883 & 1200 come down the assembly line, the engines do not get balanced? When you take your 883 to a reputable engine builder, He balances everything, to make your 1200 smooth?? Just Sayin??

      Hi Gary, it was a lot of work to carry out the conversion and almost as long to edit it in to one movie! I imagine it gives a fair few more horsepower, but that means more revs and it won't rev any faster, but it is around 25% more torque and makes a noticeable difference on low down grunt. Happy New Year buddy.
