I'm one of those weirdos whose favourite Red Faction game is Armageddon. It might be very linear especially compared to Guerrilla but the stupid guns were just so much fun to use.
Same here. It wasnt well advertised but getting rid of the open world to be a more arena oriented destruction shooter with fun weapon was the best decision they took. It was fun, action packed and not to long. One of the best 5€ sales i've had. And it has an unicorn that fart deadly rainbows as a gun.
I vividly remember this one moment from the game when i played it when it came out. I got my hands on one of the mechs, the smallest one, the one that can jump, and i saw this low pedestrian bridge in the fancy resedential area. So i walked under it and just jumped up, made a clean round hole and in the flight moved forward and landed on the bridge, the npc''s started panicing and running away like i was some mole man invading surface).
This is one of my all-time favorite games, and it's for the exact same reason everyone else likes this game. The destruction physics. They're still the best in the industry, and they were implemented into the gameplay very well. The open world story missions + activities + freeform destruction worked really well, and I'd like to make a special mention to the little challenges everywhere. The little missions that did stuff like "destroy this building with only two charges" or "destroy this building by playing golf with explosive barrels". And personally, I played the absolute pants off the hotseat mode. I'd have friends over a couple of times a week to watch movies and stuff, we gave it a try and ended up loving it. You really begin to appreciate the destruction physics when you need to take down a building in a minute flat, and the singularity charge can yeet support beams into your neck from across the map. Man, now I want to replay it again. I absolutely love this game, and if there's one game I'd have to point to that deserves a modern (spiritual) sequel, it's this one.
Literally the second after I placed this comment the other video I was watching lamented the fact that Guerilla was the last game with this kind of destruction. Yeah, I'd say it's time for this mechanic to return already.
6:21 The buildings even have physics and they creek and groan when they're pretty much gutted. It's SO satisfying to drop a building on top of someone, or blow up a bridge and have it collapse in a grand spectacle of utter destruction.
6:47 I'm so glad I was there live to see you absolutely liquify that person's entire skeleton. Also, I picked the game back up myself after seeing you play it, and i've been having a blast again. I forgot myself how hilarious the ragdolls were.
When is whoever that owns the Red Faction IP gonna quick dicking around and give us Red Faction Guerrilla 2? I've been waiting 14 years for fuck's sake.
That guard got hit so hard his physics broke! I've only played the demo way back on the Xbox 360. I've seen this game on sale for dirt cheap. Will pick it up next time I see one of those sales.
Guerrilla is great in the fact that it knows what you want, and gives it to you in spades. Explosions everywhere, out the ass. It’s also one of the only games Ive played with a focus on guerrilla fighter gameplay.
It's sad that we will never get another proper Red Faction game, after Armageddon in 2011. Instead we get a handful of "Saints Row" games after SR4 that nobody asked for
I have this vivid memory of playing the multiplayer on 360, capture the flag, and me running back to our side with their flag while ours was out. Smashed a hole in a crate, got in, teammate used the repair gun to seal it back up again. Laughing hysterically while the enemy scoured the base looking for the flag carrier
red faction guerilla is a little rough graphically but definitely not rough for its time. That anisotropic velvety cloth material still looks comfy as hell
The graphics are to fine to me, I didn't mind the redness. I think Far Cry 2, CoD Ghosts, Saints Row 2, and GTA TLaD are the games that I wasn't so fond of the art direction for.
@@MerlautJones I'd really like to ask what specifically about TLaD's art style you didn't like. It was done in the same graphics engine as the main game & gay tony, it was just another way to experience LC. I think GT aged more just because it's embarrassingly cringe to sit through most of its story. TLaD arguably has the same problem with aging jokes, but it is just GT but biker theming instead.
The story in guerilla just did not grab me. His brother dies, okay, but we've known this guy for like 3 seconds, i do not care about these characters at all.
I remember renting this when it came out and being like, "Yeah, it's neat... but I'm not sold." Personally, the OG Red Faction is my favorite, but I fully realize that it's only due to nostalgia and unlike games like MoHAA, Max Payne, or RTCW I never have the urge to go back and replay it even though I own it on both GOG and Steam.
I only ever got to play the multiplayer on Xbox Live once, and I'll never forget it. After several sessions' worth of attempts, I finally found a lobby to join, and within half an hour I'd partied up with everyone in the lobby, abandoned the competitive multiplayer, and just spent three hours playing glorified hide and seek.
Funnily enough I think I like Armageddon slightly better than this one -- but it's definitely close. I think to me it really comes down to the slight boost in enemy variety AND THE MAGNET GUN. Maybe aside from the Pyro GX, that's probably the most fun piece of equipment I've ever gotten to use in a game. If you do play that game make sure you use the magnets. Being able to weaponize everything from explosives to other enemies to buildings to... everything... turns the game from a mediocre tunnel shooter into something else entirely. :) Like a gravity gun on steroids.
@@dan_loeb It doesn't really, but once the magnet gun was firmly ensconced in my arsenal I didn't really mind :) There's plenty of structures around to throw at enemies and the repair function means that if you run out of "ammo" you can make more.
It's the type of game like Just Cause that just gives you random reasons to blow some stuff up. Love these and I'm sad there's no more games like these using modern tech. In terms of destruction only Teardown and BeamNG (soft body physics of vehicles) can match RF Guerilla... and I still think Guerilla looks better than Teardown.
RFG is definitely the best RF game. You didn't even mention the multiplayer which is one of my fave if all time. 😁 How the backpacks effect gameplay and the meta is amazing. Sadly due to this being a bit of a golden era in games it didn't get the spotlight it deserved and only stayed reasonably populated for a year or so. Just to boast a little...I believe I'm the first player in the world to get the Ostrich Sledgehammer unlocked in the ReMARStered edition 🤩👍🏻🥒
A really overlooked aspect of Guerilla (at least on it's original release) was the multiplayer. The support backpacks and sledgehammers made it a pretty singularly fun game. Most of the backpacks that gave you mobility options like the rhino charge, sprint pack, and jetpack led to some pretty fun games.
Loved this game to bits. but I wish it had a post-game sandbox mode. a lot of buildings stay broken and you can destroy them again. Also beating the game fully brings the EDF back to all zones. stopping just before the final mission keeps the EDF locked to one zone
Not to mention the multiplayer versus modes are a lot of fun, even playing just by yourself, figuring out how to most efficiently take down large structures with weird loadouts Also the nanogun, you didn't talk about the nanogun
I had lofty dreams for the future of the series once I'd played this magnificent game (like a whole EDF city to destroy, sky scrapers and everything) and mannnnn, Armageddon could not have possibly been more of a let down if it tried. I'll never feel as blue balled as I did after the tutorial for Armageddon where they give you a whole-ass base to destroy... only to follow this up with endless cave corridors with the smallest amount of destructible environments thereafter... like what?? THE most baffling decision I can possibly imagine in all of sequeldom. But yeah, Guerilla is an all time classic for me and a shining example of a game released during one of the least fun or experimental gaming generations imo.
was this the game where the dev had to redesign some of the buildings because the physic they made to run the whole thing would collapse the building because the dev could not design semi realistic buildings. like one building had glass on the first floor and a concreat slab as the secound floor and the game would intantly crush the first floor glass walls whit the concreat wall because the glass could not hold up the concert.
There are only 2 Red Factions. The first one and this one. The other two have nothing linked with the franchise except the title and an odd reference here and there.
As much as I love Teardown it just doesn't do what Guerrilla does. Teardown being more of a puzzler than "I'm going to avoid shooting these people by instead just destroying the entire building instead"
This game is absolutely amazing. One of my all time favourites and I would play it all the time back in 2010. I thought it looked really good too, but they was probably because the destruction was so impressive that I didn't notice how bare the game ACTUALLY looks. But still, a fun game nonetheless!
It will be interesting to see what you think of Armageddon. I like Guerilla more but Armageddon is IMO much better then Red Faction II so at least its not the worst in the series.
