Initially conceived during a period of great competition in the first-person shooter space, Red Faction had its work cut out for it long before entering the spotlight. Developer Volition Inc. harbored dreams that ventured far beyond simply adding another Quake-like shooter to the pile, though. Advanced destructible environments and intense vehicular combat were positioned as the differentiating factors between Red Faction and nearly everything else available for PC and console. And despite launching in 2001 to tepid reception, the Volition-developed FPS title set quite the precedent.
Commercially, Red Faction secured its place as publisher THQ’s top-selling franchise until another Volition property, Saints Row, stole the crown. Such success begat a few sequels, spinoffs, and even a TV movie. Improved technology along with the open-world structure of Red Faction: Guerrilla introduced a new level of destruction and reinvigorated excitement for the brand. But victories of this caliber were squandered two years later when a shocking case of regression engendered a return to linearity in Armageddon that few wanted.
All in all, Red Faction sits atop a lengthy list of PS2-era franchises that never found their footing. It didn’t help that Volition’s parent company long struggled to keep itself afloat amid financial woes and industry changes, ultimately culminating in bankruptcy. Still, the road that led to Red Faction fading into obscurity may not be as straightforward as it once seemed.

Saints Row 1 and 2 along with Guerilla gave me some of the most unforgettable gaming times of my life. mad respect to those teams who made those super fun games.

I had an absolute blast playing Guerilla. There was nothing like driving to a HQ, stocking up with tons of ammunition, driving to an EDF base and unleashing chaos on buildings, soldiers, vehicles, planes and everything in between. I played this on PS3 / 360 several times. I had fun with the MP also. Armageddon on the other hand was such a let down. I played through the campaign once and have completely forgotten what it was about.
I moved Guerilla as a teenager , i had no idea people didnt like it.
I accidentally bought Armageddon on accident thinking it was gorilla....ya fuck that pos game
I lost count of how many times I played the original Red Faction game. It had a crazy amount of things cramed into it from cars, ships, submarines, mining vehicles and so many types of enemies from all kinds of soldiers to muntans, robots and even people with powers. God it was fun.
rf1 was the best, but to be fair i didnt play any of the others after playing RF2 demo and saying to myself what did they do, this isnt red faction
@@ClumsyCarsHey, Guerrilla is great, but I can agree with Armageddon and II being lackluster.
One thing my friend and I would do is load up mp with the max amount of bots. Both of us would then rush to the rockets and then shoot all round into the air so when they ran out of fuel they would come back down and bombard the area. We would also tunneled on some maps to get to the other side.
They should do a remastered or a reboot taking the roots of rf1

I played Red Faction 2 as a kid and I still remember how amazed I was by the destruction. Played through it a couple of times and remember it as such a great and fun game!
Red Faction 1 was the first PC shooter I got *really* into as a kid, and it was incredible. The dynamic terrain deforming aspect was more than just a gimmick, a few maps really had unique strategies like digging a tunnel with explosives through the outer wall of the map to make a shortcut between the flags, which totally changed the game as the fight was for control of the new tunnel path.
Loved the original, 2 was a miss, but Guerilla was fun too. Sad to see the series fall from grace.
Geo-Mod destruction was so far ahead of It's time It's crazy , they were Implementing organic non-set peice almost fully modifiable environment destruction all the way back In *2001* ,
most devs rarely even properly Implement this In 2023. OG Red Faction was the multiplayer successor to 007 for me for a few years , and I still listen to the classic soundtrack.

I loved Red Faction 2's bots and how they leveled up the more you used them. It was such a neat concept and added flavor to them. Miss games with bots
Yes me and my cousin spent some time levelling up those bots and then fighting them! Loads of fun!
Red Faction Guerilla was an amazing and unique open world game set in Mars, while Armageddon was okay enough, channeling a mix between Gears of War and Dead Space.
A pity Armageddon is another jump-the-shark installment that shouldn't be referred to again.
The first Red Faction followed by Guerrilla where highlights of my childhood and late teenage years respectively. The original is lost but still have Guerilla and it still holds it's own even now.
Good news, Red Faction I can still be gotten from Steam/GOG.

My friend Jason worked on this title (and many others) from Volition. I played HOURS of Red Faction with friends at LAN Parties. Man those were awesome times...
Red Faction was the reason I fell in love with Volition (which I didn't know was a renamed Parallax at the time). I loved the entire series... Armageddon included. RIP Volition...
Both Red Faction's Geomod and Soldier of Fortune's GHOUL engine brought unparalleled realism to geometry and body destruction respectively that hasn't been matched since. Even today, shooting a rocket into a wooden door that doesn't even creek, or has a black decal at most, feels incredibly bad. I wish more games would take the Geomod idea as seriously as RF:G did.

@@purebaldnessgames peaked with Jagged Alliance 2, but in all seriousness, the 2000's was something else, Gothic, Morrowind, Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock, Fallout 1 and 2 (those 4 in the end of 90's), and heck, at the end of the decade we had GTA IV, Far Cry 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Crysis, it was mind blogging to see how much raw potential the industry had and it's pretty sad to see only a handful of modern titles lived up to that expectation, it's such a shame that games focused more on the graphics fidelity, instead of physics simulations, non linearity and sandbox elements.
It's ridiculous to compare Far Cry 6 to the Far Cry 2 and see that the second one was way more realistic.

All these years later and it still feels like the Red Faction games destructive environments level haven't been matched, graphical quality notwithstanding. Talk about ahead of its time!
Played RF:Armageddon earlier this year again after many years, and I was actually surprised how good fun it was, and got the impression that it was nowhere near as bad game as reviews say. Sure, it's odd to step back from open world to linear level structure on sequel, especially since the previous game was such a blast. But as I played it, I felt that it really was a great, if little generic, 3rd person shooter with cool weapons and level designs, some of the later levels had excellent artstyle and graphics. Volition was one of those teams that suffered from not growing big enough to beef up some of the games they put out more, they always felt like an underdog studio with some great concepts, but never made it big time.
It is good...and lots of fun.
Generic third person shooters were the "WW2 FPS" of the time. The genre was saturated which made Armageddon unable to stand out.
People tend to forget that Red Faction didn't even start as an open world series. It never was one.
the lead engine designers for Red Faction Guerilla are absolute geniuses since it was built around the 360's hardware. At one point Volition entertained the idea of using Geo-Mod 2 in Saints Row 2

Red Faction 1 was the game I decided to pick up a PS2 for. Was one of the first games to really show off what it could do.
Almost the same with me, but with the PC.
I played RF Armageddon recently for the first time.
It's not bad. It's kinda like if Resident Evil was a Red Faction game and the physics engine is really fun and destruction is used pretty well. Using the magnet gun to hurl half a building to crush aliens doesn't stop being fun. I wouldn't mind a successor to it.
the summer red faction released was a good summer for gaming for myself and my brothers. We played this day and night for about 5 months straight. One of my fondest gaming memories.

Eh subjective. By the time Guerrilla came out a large portion of the old school players that played RF 1 and 2 had moved on, especially since Gears of War 1 was still the superior 3rd person shooter compared to gurrilla@@michaelandreipalon359

Red Faction Guerilla was amazing IMO, if they could just make that game but better it'd be a good comeback. The problem wasn't that the game was bad, the problem was that Volition was poorly managed.
No matter what happens in the future with Red Faction, Volition will always be remembered for how bloody awesome Red Faction Guerrilla is. Timeless gem with super fun and amazingly gloomy atmosphere, in no small part thanks to the wonderful soundtrack too 😊

Red faction 1 and Guerilla were 2 of my favorite games back in the day on pc. I still occasionally play Guerilla, and love the mods that have extended its life.

One of my all time favorite game franchises! RF 1 & 2 being some of the most memorable games from my childhood and when Guerrilla came out one of my biggest gaming wishes came true - which was true and utter destruction and chaos with realistic physics. I ran through and completed RF 1, 2 and Guerrilla more than 7-8 times each, which was on par with how many times I completed Half-Life 1 & 2, F.E.A.R., Deus Ex, Quake 2, Silent Hill 1 & 2 and many others from that golden age of video games. I know many people don't like RF2 but to me it's better than Armageddon.

That song from the Quake 2 soundtrack used in this video's intro is one of the best soundtracks ever made. "Liked" as soon as I heard it.
Endless matches in RF2. Regime was the favorite amongst my friends and I. Catching people mid air was so satisfying.

Guarilla and Armageddon destruction is game changing. It’s the type of technical innovation in video games that I’m looking for. I cannot believe no other games followed up with it in terms of destruction. It would literally make any game more fun

Awaiting this for a very long time such an underrated franchise. Sadly, it fade away in early 2010s and never to be revive again.
Just keep the first game and Guerrilla live on the likes of the PC and other platforms, and I'll stay content. Games sorely need to stop depending on unnecessary sequels.

I enjoyed Armageddon for what it was worth. Some fun game play with the gravity gun and rebuild mechanic, and its story harkened back to the first game in a lot of ways. Guerilla is undeniably cool all around tho.

Personally... I really enjoyed every single entry of the Red Faction series. Played them all in order back to back once upon a time and it was just... a fun ride the whole time.
I played the demo of red faction ages ago. Then RFG a loooott, loved it. Good times.
I remember being very excited about rf guerilla and just cause 2. Both felt fun for a couple of hours and then turned into awful grind. Both game featured open worlds and destruction as their selling points and both forget to add the rest of the gameplay to help destruction thrive.
Helps that they're even better and surprisingly improved sequels to their respective last games (RF II and JC1), though it hurts that their sequels can't compare (Armageddon and JC3 and 4 really feel lackluster).
Except Gureilla was repetitive as hell after a few hours compared to RF 2 which is why the series died so much after afterwards@@michaelandreipalon359

Other than that, very well made. Guerilla will always be my favorite with RF2 in second place.

Red Faction was one of those games that fell in the “It’s not Halo, Call of Duty, or Gears of War, so I’m just gonna forget it exists” category of games for me
Granted, the fact that it's neither of those does help its refreshingly unique feel.
So who else remembers the nightmare of fighting enemies with railguns while your stuck on a train on hard difficulty😅
Red faction 2 single player was absolutely fantastic. Character'sal and gameplay was great
I still remember getting hyped for Guerilla after the demos of the new destruction engine. Once i got my hands on it, it was a really fun game
Red faction series is one of my all time favorites, I replayed them several times and to this day very few games achieve this level of destruction and complete sense of mayhem. I cant understand why they're not more well regarded in the gaming community.
OG Red Faction was the game that took over 007 as my go to console FPS multiplayer for 6th gen , Geo-Mod destruction was way ahead of It's time and the soundtrack Is equally classic.
Most people were hyping up Halo 1 and 2 during the early 2000s , but from 2001 - 2004 It was all about heated Red Faction multiplayer matches for me. Hope this franchise returns.

Man I have so many great memories playing split screen multiplayer in the first game with my brother. The environmental destruction is still so impressive to this day and I wish more games put more of a focus on destructible environments like that first game did.
Volition may be gone, but the legend of Space Asshole lives on.
Red Faction 1 and 2 are some of my favourite games ever, i really enjoyed the story mode in both and the multiplayer with bots was brilliant chaos, especially on maps like the lobby.
The Rise and Fall of Red Faction and The Rise and Fall of Saint's Row was The Rise and Fall of Volition.
With Volition dead I wonder where most of their games are going to end up in.
I actually enjoyed Armageddon a fair bit when it came out. Mostly due to the new repair function, but I soon got bored with it upon beating the main story and trying out the co-op mode over live.
I think the biggest problem was the move from sandbox, and back to linear levels. I can understand wanting to tell a good contained story, but they were known for the destructive sandbox of Guerilla at that time. So they needed to knock it of the park with a very strong story if they wanted to make a change to the gameplay loop.
Unfortunately, I dont think the team was capable of that. I never played Guerrilla for the strong story. It was acceptable as a vehicle to open up the sandbox and challenge the player, but it wasnt very memorable on its own. Its replayability, for me, was found in the sandbox chaos.
As much hate as it gets, Red Faction 2 was one of the first games I ever played so I had nothing to compare it against except maybe Halo CE which I played once or twice on my cousins Xbox. RF2 got me hooked on military sci-fi and I still love it to this day flaws and all.
One of my favourite series. Red faction 2 is definitely the low point of the series. Even RF Armageddon is far better than RF 2. RF1 is legendary though. The destruction, the soundtrack and good gameplay. It is downright one of the best shooters of its era.

Now that I have my PS2 Slim hooked back up again, I should pop in Red Faction as I remember the game being fun as hell.
Red faction 1 and 2 where some of my favourite old games. What a shame, the destruction of environments in that fps felt great.
I never played Red Faction one, but I had 2 on the playstation and I loved it. It was one of my favourite games back in the day. I also loved 3. It's a shame the franchise and Volition died.
"Dead" would mean Red Faction I and Guerrilla are woefully delisted, which they aren't.
And besides, Volition is better off dead than be unanesthetically gutted by EA and Ubisoft.
I was in high school when Guerilla came out and I never heard of Red Faction before then, I was definitely addicted to that game. Armageddon was alright.

Red Faction 1 being a PC only game would have been amazing. looking at the small footage that there is before THQ forced Volition to make it for PS2 shows its amazing potential. I still love the PS2 version since that is what I played as a kid but a PC only would have been amazing.
Red Faction Guerrilla was truly a great game but it had one major flaw: Mars in it did not look like a massive bustling and industrialized colony, it looked more like a fledgling backwater settlement, its buildings were small, architecturally simplistic and the inside of them didn't look functional at all, they simply did not look like these were buildings inhabited by people.
Guerrilla is like THQ’s Just Cause.
Red Faction never died because of any bad games, it was just forgotten about and now with Volition gone it's probably gone for good
Not exactly. Red Faction I and Guerrilla are still up and running, and not given a fate similar to the poor Unreal/Unreal Tournament games.
