I'm at 83k.. just doing them right now. It's a pain in the @$$ for real. Not even done.. just took a 10 min break. Looked hella easy in the video but it's not
@@jimher8810 I was hesitant on doing this, but removing the engine mounts and jacking up the engine made this job 20 minutes to finish. Its simple af. You have clearance for days doing it this way.
Magnetic 14 mm spark plug socket, universal joint swivel, and a 1 inch extension. In that order. You don’t need to deal with fishing out sockets and the actual spark plug with a magnet just detach from the ratchet and you’re all good.
In 50,000 miles maybe. There are some good vids on you tube on the underneath technique if you look. Seriously if you have any wrenching skill it’s not at all difficult. Just a huge PITA.
Tip for anyone else who had trouble separating the 3" extension from the 14mm deep socket: go to your kitchen, grab a fork, and use use that to push the deep socket towards the spark plug while your other hand holds the 3" extension. Should come right apart.
My first time taking out a spark plug (which was bc I had a misfire in cylinder 3. RIP) was fairly easy. Extension and socket would fall into the bay or ground multiple times, but i got it removed in less than 30 min. Fairly easy if your patient with it.
i remember doing this in june.. couldnt get the extension to unhook from the socket after loosening the spark plug so i was stuck for an hour trying to get the extension off with no luck so i gave in and just loosened the motor mount bolts and raised the motor. on the other hand it did make the job alot easier and there was way more room; real confident booster to continue the job.
🤣 that was my exact problem too! the forums say not to fully seat the extension so i knew that going in, and i'm genuinely surprised that isn't one of the tips in this video. i don't know how he got the extension off the socket here, 'cause i absolutely couldn't do it no matter how much jiggling and cursing i did. ended up raising the motor after all lmao
@@GlennOrion oh crap i didnt know you shouldnt seat the extension all the way, well that explains a lot. oh trust me wrenches were thrown and curse words were at their worst. but loosening the motor mount nuts to almost the end of the stud and lifting the motor isnt actually that bad (as long as you have a half inch impact driver) it made the job fairly easier and made the job alot faster than having to be stuck in a crammed area

My buddies have been giving me shit about how AWFUL it is to change spark plugs on a boxer but your tutorial gave me the courage to do it myself anyway. Bruh, you made it look so EASY... Shit took me 4 hrs LOL. I could probably do it in 90 mins next time now that I know what I'm doing.
Just tackled this today, started at 10am and finished at 2pm, very limited space to work with. Lost a 10mm socket and 1 airpod lmao! Quick tip, put a shirt between the gap so it can catch whatever you drop. I never found my socket or airpod lol.
Just want to drop in and let you know how my plug change went on my 2018 86. It took me six hours and was an experience I never want to go through again. Both forearms are bruised with cuts in three places from the sharp clips I had to wrestle with to get to the plugs/screws/coil clips. My back is killing me and my right side starts to cramp if I twist in just the right direction. Also had to take the front skid plate off as well as the first set of bolts on the second skid plate to find all the crap I dropped (bolt for left side fuel rail cover, two coil pack plug clips) and couldn't recover with the magnet. By the way, the plugs/clips on the coil packs are way different than the ones on your car. These things are evil. You're right though. The passenger side is easier (right side - US market). Marginally. I seem to have more clips holding the wiring to my ECU and it was extremely difficult to get it folded back out of the way. I was sure I was going to break something. Also helps to take off the cover to the fuse box. Gives you a bit more room. The driver's side was ridiculous and where I received most of my bruises and suffered the most blood loss. I'll never do that again. I'll happily pay someone next time that chore rolls around. Heck, I thought changing the plugs on a Camry transverse V6 engine was a pain. That's nothing compared to this. You do make it look easy, though... :) Deceptively easy.
Just did the spark plugs for the first time on my FR-S , took about 2:30 hours but honestly just take your time and find some thing like a small hard plastic to remove the socket from the extension and that will make the job a lot easier.
In the process of doing this now. I'm trading my BRZ in for a different one. Holy balls this is the most infuriating process ever. Don't be duped by this video like I was, this process is my nightmare.

I fell victim to the false sense of confidence from this video, 5hrs on the passenger side! Ended up having to jack it up and drop the skid plate to retrieve hardware and tools, but the biggest time consumer was actually the little bolt that holds down the coil on the front cylinder. It just would not find the hole, and after an hour, I ended up making a stud, installing the stud and finishing up. A stud would be phenomenal for the coil packs, and I'm dreading the other side now.
