The Toyota GT86, the Subaru BRZ, and the Scion FRS--the tuning trifecta that helped define the meaning of ‘driving experience.” With famed Tetsuya Tada at the helm, and a Subaru Boxer engine under its bonnet, the 86 took off from Japan, splashed into the European and American Automotive markets, and ushered in a new era of young drivers and enthusiasts. Of all its accolades, the GT86 just lacked one thing...power babeh!
Join James Pumphrey as we explore the Toyota GT86, and answer the infamous automotive dilemma, “does making a faster car, mean making a better car?”

To me, the fact that the 86 has "less power" than other contemporary sports cars, and is also N/A, just makes it all the more similar to the 86 of old. People criticized that car too for being old and slow, but what a legend and unique driving experience it is and turned out to be.
The toyota 86 was created because of initial d and I think that is what people of the car world don't understand about it.
@@RemsHusband the zn6 was developed to be a spiritual successor to the 80s Corolla GTS and be a cash cow for Toyota and subaru because everyone wants an affordable rwd sports car. What the fuck is initial d?
I’m hoping for more sleek and simple cars instead of these overly developed ones. N/A with less power with loads of after market options with the ability to drift and built for cheap performance?? Hyped, beyond hyped
this car doesn't need boat loads of power... It is solid, and a blast to drive. I don't get why people keep saying it needs more power.
Little thing boots and N/A means all its power is instant and predictable.

Hands down THE best car I have ever driven in my life!
And I've driven cars way more powerful than this...but power doesn't actually matter...fun is what matters
Preach
Every car has its own purpose. Every performance car has its own approach to "fun". A sports car relies on handling, feel, balance, tossability, and a direct connection to the road. The S2000 had that. The Elise had that. The first two generations of the Miata had that. The Toyobaru triplets had that.
For me, any approach to "fun" has value. Hell, I even enjoyed tossing around my first new car, an obscenely simple '92 Nissan Sentra E, with its 13" wheels, manual everything, and power nothing. It was FUN. If I'm to drive a muscle car or pony car, I want tire-melting burnouts, loud growling engine notes, and room for some friends. If I'm to drive a Grand Tourer, I want legs for days, power to spare, and room for some overnight bags and some golf clubs. If I'm to drive a supercar, I want to be looked at and I want to scare myself with more power and sharper turning than I could ever handle.
If, however, I want a car that feels like every ride on the playground, at any speeds, then I'll drive a sports car. The BRZ/FRS/86 is one of those cars, and it's a great one at that.
Preach it brother
indeed: time on tracks, winning race, and efficient driving is totally boring and absolutely no fun.
Sadly, race/sport cars are evaluated on this shit.
Like driving a train is boring, even if an empty TGV can easily go at more than 500 km/h. (more than 310 mph).
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_speed_record
TGV 4402 (operation v150) reaching 574.8 km/h (357 mph)

Alejandro Vega I’ve had my twin for 5 years, fully paid off and I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it. I daily a G37 coupe now, but my BRZ will probably always stick around.
Serious question: How are they on mountain roads? Asking because I live in the mountains, and sometimes passing uphill is a must, but not every car can do it fast and reliably. Nothing worse than trying to get by a logging truck or tanker when you run out of "umph" and have to get back behind it or hope to hell nothing is coming from over the other side.

Me : F*cking Toyota Hybrid Sportscar?

XD NOICE!!!
Its odd that a comparative small coup, the Mazda MX-5, could go generations with very nominal changes in power and still be loved, while the 86 receives criticism for it.
Many people say the Miata is a hairdresser's car, while many other people say "Miata Is Always The Answer." It gets it's share of criticism, but it's old enough that the consistency in it's design philosophy is part of the love, and the bulk of the power-critics have probably gone on to looking at different cars instead.
Meanwhile, the GT86 is much newer, and the big boys behind the engine (Subaru) love juggling turbos so much that everyone is wondering how one hasn't accidentally fallen into the BRZ yet.
I would love mine to have a turbo, but the car is already such a nice drive that it'd sort of be a waste.
Case of bias before trying. I would gather 95% of those who hammer on the car have never actually driven one at all or for its intended purpose. Meanwhile in the twisty b-roads I can guarantee every owner is grinning ear to ear. Haters gonna hate.

@@alex-vu3gv It's not heavy, compared to most cars out today at all.

Finally! Thank you for doing this video! I’ve had a turbo in my BRZ for 5 years now, putting out 275whp, I couldn’t ever go back to NA. It should’ve come with FI from the factory, it didn’t upset weight distribution at all.
Have you had any issues? What brand did you get
Gustavo Salgado It’s a SBD kit (the Greddy knock-off). Winter mix fuel causes an O2 sensor warning every winter but the actual sensor is fine. I always run 93 octane, E85 stations are hard to find in my city. I think the winter O2 sensor issue is probably an OFT problem, I should’ve gotten EcuTek. So I reset the ECU once a month in winter. No issues aside from that annoyance. IMO getting it tuned by a great pro-tuner is the biggest factor in reliability. I’m going to have him retune it using EcuTek and see if the winter O2 sensor problem goes away.
I just turbo’ed my BRZ about a month or so ago. Full Blown Motorsports Stage 2 kit, definitely made a huge difference! lol currently pushing way too much boost at 14 PSI, gonna drop it down to 10 PSI soon 😌

edit: bruh it happened in the first minute
Honestly, I’m thankful it doesn’t have a turbo. Naturally aspirated engines just feel so much nicer to drive. I don’t know how to explain it, but some people will get it
More power is great if you get a kick out of blasting out of a standing start or getting really lose around corners. If you want to really hone some driving skills, less power is actually better. It means you have to make every corner perfect and hold as much speed as possible as it takes longer to build it back up again. You'll learn how to drive perfect lines and make sure each gear-change uses the most of what you've got and don't allow the revs in the next gear to fall too far below where the power is. I drove an auto one a while back and felt it was great, but would be even better with a turbo or supercharger. Then got to think about it more. 200HP is pretty good really! They run a racing class for them in New Zealand, with only suspension mods so you really need to drive well to win anything. So, I get where they're coming from now! :)
Could of used a little more "Initial D" references.

Oh you must need lift bolts if those noises are sad to you
The last generation celica was 👎
Rwd gt86 > fwd celica
I had a 2000 Celica GT-S and the valve program wouldn’t kick in. Spent nearly $1000 at the Toyota dealership to no avail. Turns out it was a simple fix, but this wasn’t known at the time (internet forums were in their infancy)

@@MotorTorq_ZA its more of a compliment.
Technically if you are less weight so is the car

I have put over 40k miles on my 2019 86gt in 1st year. LOVE IT. ...but... Passing on the hightway is a no go. Or just slow. Too low power to pass essily, safely. Otherwise, plenty of power to cruise, gets great mileage, and hits curves without slowing down. I get more compliments on the 86 than both my C5 & C6 put together. Just 30 to 50 more hp, and fix stupid "dip" would be very nice. Better headers help from what I understand.
Headers and a tune and Dip is gone, unfortunately for more power/Tq only way with this engine is to FI or E85
@@shawnmiranda Great! Thanks! I am making notes right now. Yeah. Knew headers helped a lot. Just waiting for more income I guess. So the intake is a great idea for now!
Ayyy, we've got similar taste. I had a 2014 C7 and it would just attract douchebags and homeless people begging for money (seriously). With my 2018 brz, it's not as fancy or nearly as fast but the car is still very fun. I can play around with it but don't have to worry about dying in corners.
Shawn Miranda intakes are a waste of $ power wise for this platform.. plenty of tests on the forums to reflect this. The stock air box is very good, just grab a better filter. Put the money for an intake towards an OFT after header and exhaust.. no dip, extra 20-30 hp for relatively low cost.. To each their own though. Intake does add some cool induction sounds.
@@brettlarson912 Thanks for advise. Sounds like the better plan of action.

The Celica was also produced until 2005
We need a up to speed on the Altezza
Also considering the Project engineer of the AE86 made the Altezza/IS300 SXE10/JCE10.

PRETTY SMOOTH!!
Super underrated car. There is no better chassis/suspension that you can get for the price. It's a jdm car that you can buy on every continent. It's meant to be unfinished. It's meant to be tuned or engine swapped. I've got an 86 with 30k miles only cost 16k. I could put 5 k into this car make it equal or better than a 40k sports car. This car with 300 whp is pretty much excellent
JDM mean Japanese domestic market. It’s a slow ass car, cope

Why is this the most comprehensive 86 documentary to date?
Love my 86. It's lightweight, manual transmission, great racing suspensions and it's RWD. Oh, it's modified to have 240 HP lol. Still, you can enjoy this car stock
Don't I know it haha. Planning e85 conversation and UEL headers once tuning shops open up, we'll see what I end up with.

lmao a 90s honda prelude is faster than this car.
@@BlueLobster92 Ok...your point being ? (40 k is kinda expensive for what you get but hey, FR manual tax.)
@@RobBroderick44 point being why should i spend 40k for a new car when my prelude thats 21 years old has the same amount of power and its payed for with 80k miles on it. the FRS would be cool if it had a turbo and like 100 more horsepower.
The 86 doesn't need a turbo ...
Its a blast the way it is. ☺️
I’ve always thought these were cool/unique cars because there isn’t anything else comparable to them.
