Great video! Just a bit of advice in removing the battery terminals: Always take the ground terminal off first, and reinstall it last to avoid doing arc welding with your socket wrench when you tighten the positive terminal and accidentally touch the tool to the frame. I have done it and it wrecks your tool and makes you jump into the next township.

I used a 14mm with an extension but shaved off the lock on the extension. Socket in then extension then had to fish for the socket. Thanks again.
One thing i love about those subaru engines is ease of doing an oil change because of oil filter placement but i wish they would place sparkplugs on the top like most 4 cylinder engines
Thanks for the video . Ended up getting the TONE PG86S extension set from Amazon Japan, helped a bunch but still very tricky for the driver rear plug. The trick in addition to your video was to disconnect the driver rear coil pack cable connector first to be able to get the coil pack out. Still a PITA! My plugs looked alright at 60k miles, but glad to finally get them replaced.
Great video! This explains why Subaru wants +$500 to replace the plugs. I miss the good ol' days when the plugs were right on top and it took 15 minutes to replace them, even for a total novice like me. Also, someone mentioned that the music was overpowering... the first song wasn't bad but the second song did begin to drown out your voice. However, I don't know if it was intentional but the "whir whir whir" at 1:28 in time with the impact wrench was a really nice touch.

2020 Forester sport here... The ac line is dangerously close to the wiring harness bracket on the driver side. Also, probably don't have to unplug the ECU at all if you can just move the harness enough. Furthermore, the driver rear ignition coil required undoing the harness clip with a flat head and DO NOT lose this clip, and then pulled out the coil towards the front and up of the engine bay. Your extensions are going be slightly too short and just too long to really inconvenience you as much as possible 😂. Good luck if you are taking on the good ol boxer spark plugs on.

@@samkitty5894 sounds like he has a newer Ascent, that is at least working like it should. lol. I agree with how you feel about the technology. I think it’s helpful for those who aren’t that great at driving. lol. I personally turn most of that tech off as like your friend said, I don’t like the vehicle controlling things. I prefer to rely on my driving skills, and I hate having to fight the vehicle. So I completely understand and agree with that. But I also think that technology is being put in all the newer vehicles.
Thank you so much excellent work
Your PCV should be changed out by now too.
Thank you!
@@carolpresnell8173 you’re welcome!👍🏾
Any idea how this compares to the 2019 Subaru Ascent?
Actually I do. My parents have the 2019 Ascent, so had to do theirs also. It’s comparable.
Please keep in mind your hearing impaired friends. The music wasn't overpowering but it made your voiceover impossible to hear and essentially useless. Thanks for the video - getting ready to tackle the 60k service on my 2020 forester.
@@douglasphillips1203 I didn’t realize how loud the music was until after it was posted and I got so many comments about it. Now I avoid the music, or do it really low. lol. Lesson learned.👍🏾
INFORMATIVE!
Great video, you motivated me to order the parts and get started. I followed along the video and was able to replace the passenger side front and rear spark plugs with out issue. Then I removed the battery and wiring harness and removed and replaced the driver's side front spark plug with slight contortions of the hand. However, after I removed the pencil coil plug's 10MM bolt on the rear drivers side I was unable to remove the coil. I wiggled that thing for over an hour and could not get it off between the frame rail and the engine. How did you do it? I had to put the car back together with 3 new plugs and 1 old one for now but any advice would be appreciated. I read somewhere about removing the motor mount and jacking up for clearance but I am afraid to do so. You have the only video I could find on a 2019 Forester and it was immensely helpful for the first three spark plugs. Please advice on the last one. Thank you Bob
Don't know if you completed this but gently prying the coil should work.
You said to use a 9/16” socket on the plugs. My 2019 Crosstrek has 14mm plugs. Is the Forester different, or did you mess up?
Good question. I know the 9/16” works, and is about the same as 14mm so should be fine with either. Thanks for that👍🏾
Great video!! Appreciate it
Thank you! I appreciate the view and comment.
Always back at it my dude. I just hit 30k but it did oil change. U recommend the 30k service? Or just a bunch of baloney??
With all the shut downs, things really slowed down. It took me a lot longer to get to 60k than it did all the previous maintenance points. But I’ll be posting a vid soon on what to expect and lookout for at 60k.👍🏾
For now, here is my take on the 30k maintenance.

You're better than MrSubaru
lol thanks, I appreciate that. Although I watch and like MrSubaru too.👍🏾✌🏾
Can you do this from under the vehicle? If so, is it easier?
If I remember correctly, going from under the vehicle is not an option.
Not sure what happened butt there's parts where we Can't Hear what you are saying do to the Music.
I use an old spark plug wire to help put in plugs.
Oh shoot, thanks for the heads up. I watched it before uploading and I did notice where I said something and it was hard to hear over the music, but I didn’t think it was that bad.😒
Thanks for the advice. It seems they always make sure the spark plugs aren’t easy to get to.😂
Any way to lower songs volume when you edit @@Lucrativesoldier . Yours isn't the only vid that music seems to be louder than vids normal audio. I know some editing tools & free music doesn't let audio levels be adjusted in editing
@@tpseeker3367 lol yes, that was actually lowered quite a bit. Next time I’ll go a little lower. It’s always tricky trying to find a good balance in the audio. I just watched it again, and for me, the only part that was kinda hard to hear was when I started on the first spark plug and said what size socket to use.🥴. So hopefully people will notice I put that info in the description.
Thanks @@Lucrativesoldier . Oh yeah hope the ac fan noise was remedied & hasn't come back.
@@tpseeker3367 yes they replaced the blower motor, and all has been great. Thanks👍🏾
Great job!
Thanks!
Did you use the dealer NGK plugs SKU: 22401AA940 NGK: DILKAR7Q8? or the one that rock auto sells NGK: DILKAR7Q8 or hardly anyone else.
Can anyone confirm the B8 variety fits and functions properly?
I had to purchase from the dealer at the time of this video. That was the only option at the time. Not sure if more options have become available now. Sorry
Can order them from O'Reillys too.
Number 4 spark plug coil how did you get that out ? Did you remove the wiring clip from the coil pack? Cause i have very limited room before the pack hits the frame rail...
It’s very tight in there. A lot of time and patience to get that one out. lol. Hope you were able to get it. Let me know
@Lucrativesoldier once I took the clip off the backside of the coil pack and turned the coil itself so the bolt hole was pointing the top ot came out! But not without a loss of skin and blood..... lol, I've been working on cars/trucks/ motorcycles/small engines for over 45 year's as a ASE certified mechanic for most of that time. Unfortunately, I lost most of my tools in the " camp fire " on November 8 2018, and I haven't planned on replacing what I had. Sometimes, I miss being tooled up. Thanks for posting this and getting back to me I really appreciate it
@@christopherjohnston6042 Glad you were able to get it. A little skin and blood is always better than losing your marbles. It's a close battle between the two. lol
It's always great to have the tools, but it also seems like you never have enough. lol
I bought my dad some new tools, and he still comes over to borrow mine. lol. Take care!
@@christopherjohnston6042 Thanks a million - removing the clip and turning the coil was the ticket. Getting that clip back on was not nearly as much fun.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. I have a question, does anyone else 2019 Subaru forester do a lot of kicking and jerking when it’s in first or second gear? Also, it’s not a smooth transition between the lower gears either. Also, it feels like I’m having a loose of power climbing hills with/out the ac on. I had my local dealership look at it but of course they never find anything! I’m truly concerned it’s the transmission 😳.
Thank you!
I haven’t had that problem, but I would agree, sounds like a transmission issue. Unfortunately the Subaru dealers are great at not finding the problem.😒 involving Subaru USA, and being persistent often helps get things done. Make sure to document all your issues and efforts to address them, so you have records. Good luck!
Why they need to be replaced at 60K, every other vehicle I owned 100K for platinum.
Per Subaru maintenance schedule.🤷🏾♂️
@@Lucrativesoldier I understand it’s per schedule , question why only 60K for platinum spark plugs?! those plugs should run at least 100K. Do they want to make more revenue, bc people have to change them more often?
@@WarEagleTheBest that’s very possible. The spark plugs are so new so you can only buy them from Subaru.🥺
Great content and very well done vid - I must admit I'm probably gon bite the bullet and have it done at the dealership - I'm not patient at all anymore ..... The money spent ain't worth my cursings and aggravation - and NO I don't want to spend that kind of money 💲🤑🤑-

Did you have to do an idle relearn? Lots of mixed info the the net.
I did not have to do the relearn. I’m actually just seeing the relearn process for the cvt fluid change, and I didn’t do that one either and haven’t had any issues. I think if you have an error code or the vehicle isn’t running right, then you need to do the relearn.
I'm a member of a Subaru Forester forum. Your video shared a lot. The only issue people have is not seeing enough on that back driver's side plug removal.@@Lucrativesoldier
@@aleekat73 thank you! I’ve been hearing that. I didn’t realize I left it out. I think because I got caught up trying to figure it out. But it’s like all other plugs, just tight for the first time. You have to push the button and pull.👍🏾
I understand. Having to use both hands.@@Lucrativesoldier
I didn’t catch that can you show me one more time…on mine? Ahhhhh, no, I’ll do it not looking forward to that last one.
Lol I might only do 3 plugs next time.😂. Glad it doesn’t have to be as frequent as the oil change. Lol✌🏾
Music is too loud.
lol yep, someone beat you to that already. But thanks anyway.
@@Lucrativesoldier the video is fantastic though. You saved me$400
Would this be pretty similar for a Subaru accent?
Yes pretty much identical. I had did a vid on the Ascent but decided not to post it for that reason.
This is the reason I will never have a Subaru.
lol all over 1 spark plug? Just having the oil filter up top makes it worth it for me.😂
Let the junk cv axles, junk transmission, thin cracking windshield, and everything else that failed in the first 2 thru 4 years stop you from buying a Subaru. Worst piece of junk I've ever bought.

1st interval is at 60k then every 30k??? say what... is that correct???
Lol no. It should be every 60k.
How long did it take you start to finish? I wonder what the dealer charges to change plugs?
It’s hard to say, because I also had to record the video. I would guess 2-3 hours. I’m sure the dealer is quicker, but charges $$$. Lol

Do the plugs come pre gapped? What should the gap be?
The plugs are vehicle specific, so no need for gap adjustment.👍🏾

@@tillisross2246 you’re welcome!✌🏾
As he stated, there should be no need to adjust the gap but if you want to verify the ones you bought are correct, the gap spec according to the 2019 Forester service manual is 0.7 - 0.8 mm (0.028 - 0.031in)
