    From what I read, Toyota wanted to make a small, affordable RWD sports car something like the old 86s', especially with their rise in popularity. Asked Subaru to help .. then abandoned the project. Subaru finished the car themselves, then Toyota wanted it back. The result was both companies now sell their own version of it.

      Subarus hg issue was bad on NON turbo model's around from '96-'98 in 1999 they changed the design and materials from a composite to multi layer steel design. It was a big issue on the 2.5L legacy and base impreza. But all the turbo models had upgraded gaskets even during those era's so it's a very undeserved reputation that's turned more into auto lore than fact, turbo models even had a whole different head design so the cheap pos gaskets wouldn't have even fit on them. The only gasket on my daily driven 10yr old STI was a slightly damp valve cover gasket which was like $300 to replace.. Has been a good car to me but they can be a little finicky so taking one to jiffy lube for maintenance is pure stupidity lol, like any turbo or sports car smart owners ditch the Stealership do their now research and find a private reputable mechanic which specializes in your make. Any shop with corporate funding is there to make money off you private honest shop's only stay in business by providing good service.. Plus I don't care what anyone say's any turbo or super charged car should get religious 3k mile oil changes and premium oil with a higher temp rating to keep it's viscosity under high turbo temps. Factory in 5-30 we use 5-40 Motul that plus an upgraded oil pick-up I never have oil consumption issues, that's where the research comes in lotta info out there to see what common issues and when your car will have them.

      But that awesome awd subi has saved our lives in a horrible rock slide incident on a windy cliff road where the whole damn road was covered in flowing dirt marble like rocks and huge boulders the size of a damn engine around a blind corner you couldn't even see the black top anymore was scary as hell lol, but that traction control went crazy 3 lights on the dash flashing and you could feel each tire gain traction moving power between then so fast it was literally jerking tbe vehicle from wheel to wheel but kept me straight AND was able to dodge those boulders like a damn video game 😂, if it wasn't a few hundred foot drop with no shoulder it would've almost been fun 😂. That roll cage rated frame saved our lives a second time when we got rear-ended at the red light by a college girl texting who hit us at freeway speeds on cruise control absolutely totaling her dads car.. Poor dad lol. But we were safe enough to be cleared by chp n drive away with a slight rattle from the munched bumper no frame damage at all and only $1k in repairs plus an alignment lol. I may me a Camaro and truck guy but I'll always own at least 1 Subaru they are fantastic cars as long as you keep up on your maintenance and research which parts tend to go out and just replace them BEFORE they give you issues.

    Scotty, I'm 31 years old, I recently started a course in Automotive Mechanics and I study on my own too (your videos teach a lot), I've already spent a lot of money on tools and I have an 89' Monza that I paid for the price of a popcorn just to disassemble and re-assemble without fear.
    I feel that I'm progressing but at the same time, because I don't have previous knowledge, I sometimes feel discouraged... After all the money invested, I can't go back. Some advice? I have a wife and child and they support me a lot, but because I have a family, I sometimes feel much greater pressure to learn... Can you (or anybody) say some uplifting words of wisdom?

    "It looks a lot faster than it is" - lol. I had a college professor at my Flight School University, who when he was 16, had a 4 cyl mustang. It too looked "faster than it was" - as he couldn't address the actual speed of the thing, he decided he could, momentarily, make it seem like it had the power it lacked. He went to the U-pull it, grabbed an extra windshield washer reservoir, bought some tubing, wired it all up and ran those tubes to the back wheels, where it would spray "bleach", allowing him to easily create excessive wheel spin off the line and hell of a lot of white smoke :) Made for a good show for about 4 seconds, before the guy he was racing off the line at the traffic light blew him away, ha ha.

    Owning an 86 or BRZ is a really special club. It’s an inexpensive tuner car. Thousands of mods and different variations. In Japan they even sold in the RC spec which comes with unpainted bumpers, steel wheels, no stereo system given that most tuners replace those parts

      @PSIRockinOmega 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, even the engine was co-developed. This is truly a collaboration. Though it is a Toyota project, and the BRZ is technically the rebadge, Subaru did contribute a lot as well!

    Scotty, it is not a C45 engine. That logo on the intake manifold says D-4S. Look a little closer. It stands for Dynamic Force Superior. That’s what Toyota calls their direct inject plus port inject engines.

      Yeah sure Bud. Fuji Heavy Industries, parent company of Subaru has no industrial press brakes to stamp their own steel head gaskets. Subaru failures are primarily the owner neglected heater hoses that pinhole and cause the failure. I can speak on that since I owned a 1970 FF1 Star and failed to replace the $3 bucks worth of 5/8 hose on my 78,000 mile engine. But that was back in
      1981. I miss that japan built, mini cooper knockoff. 1100cc of fun.

      Bought it 2nd owner, off a guy from New Zealand that imported it to the USA. $450.
      Only complaint was in 20 degree F the car had to idle for six or seven minutes because the gear shift was so tight into 1st. So I just let the input shaft spin up and warm up the 90wt in neutral. Weird. But it gave me time to sweep the rest of the snow off.
      Never got stuck.
