    It's unfortunate most shops now want the biggest money rip and always say engine rebuild or some similar $8,000 repair. I went from zero experience to doing almost all maintenance on my car after the last repair quote at a trusted "independent" shop was $11,5000 and it was just a clogged filter. Too bad trust is gone.

    Cylinder 1 misfire in a 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE, replaced the spark plug and the ignition coil. The check engine light went from a solid orange light (pre-fix) to a flashing orange light (post-fix). Only code that had came up on my OBD scanner was P0301. Not entirely quite sure what the issue is with it, as the coils/plugs were brand new straight from the box and didn't show signs of anything faulty with them. Ran through possible outcomes before putting them in to make sure nothing would go wrong with the process, so I'm really at quite a loss as to what to do here.

      A flashing check engine light after replacing the spark plug and ignition coil for a cylinder 1 misfire (P0301 code) on your 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE usually indicates a more serious misfire that could damage the catalytic converter. Since you've already replaced the spark plug and ignition coil without resolving the issue, consider the following steps:
      Check Installation: Double-check the installation of the new spark plug and ignition coil to ensure they are properly seated and connected.
      Inspect Fuel Injector: The problem might be with the fuel injector of cylinder 1. A clogged or faulty injector can cause misfires. Check for proper operation or signs of clogging.
      Compression Test: Perform a compression test on cylinder 1. Low compression can result from issues like a blown head gasket, worn piston rings, or valve problems, leading to misfires.
      Examine Wiring and Connectors: Check the wiring and connectors leading to the ignition coil and fuel injector for cylinder 1. Damaged wires or loose connections can cause misfires.
      Vacuum Leaks: A vacuum leak in the intake manifold can lead to misfires, especially if it's near cylinder 1. Listen for hissing sounds and check for leaks using a smoke test if necessary.
      Check the Engine Control Module (ECM): Rarely, the issue could be with the ECM itself. Ensure the software is up to date and check for any signs of ECM malfunction.

      I recently got new cat fitted, 3 weeks later it was throwing a code p0420 and p0303, now its just showing p0303 , i changed coils and plugs, plugs were really bad, which i was surprised at as it was only 2 years ago i got new 1s fitted, but 1 had almost like crazy build up that almost looked like stones, stuck round the thread and another had tiny bit of oil on it, so i replaced them with new1s, hoping that would fix it but code came back in no time, theres no sign of head gasket leaks and under the oil cap is clean, the coolant looks fine also, tbh i was shocked at how bad 1 of the plugs were, so its prob on its way out if looking like that, but surprisingly the really bad spark plug was in cylinder 1 but i have p0303 code which was weird. My revs are not jumping, my exhaust is sputtering at the rear, its a celica 2001 vvtli, im gonna try clean the injectors to see if that is the problem but im losing my mind, just want my car back with power😅

      Hi Steven. Did you manage to solve the problem? Since the light started flashing after replacing the ignition coils (packs), plugs, and wires, it's possible there's an issue with the installation, a defective part, or another underlying engine problem that wasn't addressed by the replacements. It's important to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) with an OBD-II scanner to pinpoint the exact cause. Given the situation, it's advisable to avoid driving the vehicle until it's been inspected and repaired to prevent further damage.

    When I was a child doctors used to ask: "when/how did it start happening?" 🙄 Doesn’t how or when the problem started to happen make a difference in the diagnostic?
    I have a 20 year old Volvo s40 with 120,000 miles which looks like it just came out of the dealer!
    It was running great until… getting on a freeway had a bad truck driver coming really fast which forced me to accelerate really hard… it got me out of trouble but when I got home the engine light started flashing and the car sounded and felt like misfiring. I have another car so I stopped driving it since I learned it could make it worse. I replaced the spark plugs and coils and the catalytic converter which was the original and really needed to be replaced; however, nothing stopped the flashing light but when I think about it in my case what are the chances that the hard acceleration could've caused the plug wires or spark plugs go bad? They were not old before anyway and I’ve always replaced everything I can with original Volvo parts! So I’m afraid I have to think the worse that could’ve happened… sadly since I bought this car originally in 2003 and used it to take my son to school.. wanted to keep it but now I doubt I’ll be able to.. any ideas pls welcome!

    Thanks for the information. I have a problem I am hoping you can shed some light on. I had engine misfire and replaced all. the coils and spark plugs. The misfire went away. Also have a new fuel filter. Six months later, I am experiencing a random misfire. Sometimes the car runs perfectly, and all of the sudden it misfires for a few seconds. Sometimes the "Service engine light soon" flashes on and off during the misfire. Then it goes back to running ok. I have poured motor treatment liquids to see if cleaned injectors and the such. Once it misfires, I can detect a P0300 code and troubleshooting this has been difficult. I do not get more specific codes. 2003 GMC Envoy XL 4.2L 6 Cyl. Any thoughts?

    • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi, my pleasure. Experiencing random misfires in your 2003 GMC Envoy XL 4.2L 6 Cyl after replacing coils, spark plugs, and fuel filter suggests several potential issues. Given that the misfire seems intermittent and triggers a P0300 code without more specific fault codes, consider the following areas for further diagnosis:
      Fuel System: Despite a new fuel filter, issues with fuel pressure (fuel pump problem or clogged fuel injectors) can cause random misfires. Using motor treatment liquids might not fully clean clogged injectors.
      Electrical Connections: Loose or corroded electrical connections to the coils or spark plugs can cause intermittent issues.
      Vacuum Leaks: A vacuum leak in the intake manifold gasket or vacuum hoses can lead to misfires, especially noticeable at idle or low-speed operation.
      Catalytic Converter: A partially blocked catalytic converter can sometimes cause random misfires due to restricted exhaust flow.
      Crankshaft or Camshaft Position Sensor: Faulty sensors can lead to misfires as they provide critical timing information to the engine's control unit.
      Given the complexity and range of possible causes, a thorough diagnostic approach is necessary. Consider having the fuel system pressure tested, inspecting all electrical connections for tightness and corrosion, checking for vacuum leaks with a smoke test, and testing or scanning for issues with the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. A diagnostic tool capable of real-time data monitoring might help pinpoint the issue more effectively by observing engine parameters during a misfire event.

      @HonestMechanicChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It sounds like you’ve got a real conundrum with your 2010 Passat. Let’s break down the potential issues and solutions:
      Misfires and Engine Roughness
      1. Vacuum Leaks: Check for any vacuum leaks. These can cause misfires and rough idling, especially when the engine is cold.
      2. Fuel System Issues: Ensure the fuel injectors are clean and working properly. A clogged or malfunctioning injector can cause misfires.
      3. ECU Problems: The engine control unit (ECU) might need reprogramming or replacement. Sometimes, software issues can lead to random misfires.
      4. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A faulty MAF sensor can cause erratic engine behavior. Cleaning or replacing it might help.
      Brake Lights and Pedal Response
      1. Brake Light Switch: The brake light switch might be faulty or incorrectly adjusted. It’s located near the brake pedal and can be adjusted to activate the lights with less pedal travel.
      2. Master Cylinder: If there’s an issue with the master cylinder, it might affect both the brake lights and pedal feel. Check for leaks or other issues with the master cylinder.
      Lurching and Acceleration Issues
      1. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): A faulty TPS can cause the engine to lurch or hesitate. It might need calibration or replacement.
      2. Transmission Problems: Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level and consider having the transmission inspected. Rough shifting can sometimes be due to transmission issues rather than engine problems.
      Recommendations
      1. Second Opinion: It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion from another trusted mechanic or an independent VW specialist. This can help ensure you’re not being misled.
      2. Detailed Diagnostic: Ask for a comprehensive diagnostic report, including a check of all sensors, fuel system components, and the ECU.
      3. Brake System Check: Have the brake system thoroughly checked, including the master cylinder, brake light switch, and related wiring.
      Good luck, and may your Passat purr like a kitten soon! 🚗💨

      Hi Jesse, It looks like you've done some of the right things already by changing the spark plugs and ignition coils, but since you're still experiencing the P0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire detected), P0302 (cylinder 2 misfire detected), and P0305 (cylinder 5 misfire detected) codes and shaking past 3000 RPM, let's dig deeper.
      Check the Fuel Injectors: Misfires can often be caused by faulty fuel injectors. Ensure that the injectors for cylinders 2 and 5 are working properly. You might need to clean them or replace them if they are malfunctioning. I suggest you try a liqui moly fuel injector cleaner.
      Compression Test: Conduct a compression test on all cylinders. Uneven compression can cause misfires. If the compression is low in cylinders 2 and 5, you might have internal engine issues like worn piston rings or valve problems.
      Vacuum Leaks: Inspect for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold, hoses, and connections. A vacuum leak can cause a lean condition leading to misfires.
      Let me know how it goes!

    Hello there, it is a very detailed video! I got my car broken down when driving in traffic (less than 30m/h). Had the check engine, battery and oil alerts. It didn't want to restart. Went to the garage and they changed the camshaft sensor. Worked perfectly fine until 2 days after. It started to shutdown randomly and when i restarted, it was working. Sent to the garage again and they couldn't see any abnormalities in their scans. Then, when driving out of the garage, the car didn't work and the scan said P0302. They checked everything and couldn't find the cause. The spark plugs were with oil, so they cleaned it. And deleted alerts. Drove home and the next day, the car shutdown twice. There is no alerts so nothing was diagnosed. Any help here? They checked everything, air , fuel pressure,. Elantra 2019 2.0L

    • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Lillian. Sorry to hear that. Here is what I think The P0302 code indicates a misfire in cylinder 2, and oil on the spark plugs suggests there might be a valve cover gasket leak or worn piston rings allowing oil into the cylinder, which can cause misfires. Even if the sensor and pressures check out, oil fouling can prevent a proper spark, leading to random shutdowns.
      Here's what I'd suggest:
      1. Inspect valve cover gasket for leaks around cylinder 2.
      2. Compression test on cylinder 2 to check for mechanical issues like worn rings.
      3. Coil swap: Try swapping the ignition coil with another cylinder to see if the misfire moves.
      4. Check wiring to the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, as loose connections can cause intermittent stalls.
      Intermittent issues can be tricky, so I'd push the garage to focus on these areas.

      Check the gap on the plugs you put in, that could do it. If it’s running worse than it was before you know 100% it’s something with the plugs, get a spark plug gap tool , and see. Get close to OEM. Sometimes OEM spark plugs are better than “upgraded” irridium or whatever.

      Hi, Possible causes:
      1. Fuel injector issue on cylinder 5
      2. Vacuum leak
      3. Cam or crank sensor problem

    Hello there, I have a Toyota Camry 2010. I currently have a misfire on cylinder 3. Its not the ignition coil or spark plug ive swapped them and the misfire remins on 3. The car goes on limp mode when I excell on a large hill or driving on the freeway. My friend told me to change the air filter and clean the mass air flow. I also did fuel additives. That did clear the code on its own however it came back with the same issue only on hills. Not as often now. Any suggestions. Thanks and God bless.

    • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi David, Fuel Injectors: Since you've ruled out the ignition coil and spark plug, the next likely culprit could be a clogged or faulty fuel injector on cylinder 3. Try swapping the injector with another cylinder to see if the misfire moves.
      2. Compression Check: It's possible that there might be an issue with the engine's internal components. Performing a compression test on all cylinders can help identify if there's a problem with the cylinder itself, such as a bad valve or piston ring.
      3. Vacuum Leaks: Check for any vacuum leaks around the intake manifold and vacuum hoses. A vacuum leak can cause a lean condition, especially noticeable under load, such as driving up hills.
      4. Wiring and Connectors: Inspect the wiring and connectors going to the fuel injector and ignition coil for cylinder 3. Sometimes a loose or corroded connector can cause intermittent issues.

      Thank you for the reply. I purchased a compression kit off Amazon. If that passes I'll just purchase a fuel injector and go from there. The fuel rail is in the back of the engine block making it harder to access. So swapping them is out of the question, at least for me... It's an intimidating job. Thanks again I appreciate it.

    My neighbor tech checked it today and he said it's not a spark plug problem now. He said the car may be misfiring because the motor is leaking engine oil from the spark plug. I have a 2010 jeep patriot 2.4l I changed the spark plugs, ignition coil, and injectors. I'm still having a misfire in cylinder 3. I got to doing some reading on it and it said it could be the pcm so I changed it. Still having the issue. I also changed the valve cover gaskets as cylinder 3 had a little oil on the spark plug. After doing all of this, I noticed it's been white smoking until it warms up and it goes away. Is that the head gasket that's causing all of this?

    • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Your 2010 Jeep Patriot's persistent cylinder 3 misfire, even after replacing spark plugs, ignition coil, injectors, PCM, and valve cover gaskets, along with the appearance of white smoke that disappears when the engine warms up, strongly indicates a head gasket issue. The head gasket might be leaking coolant into the cylinder, causing the misfire and white smoke. A compression test or leak-down test can confirm if the head gasket is the culprit. Also you can try a head gasket additive and see if that fixes your problem.
      Hope this is helpful

    Hi, I have a really frustrating problem I have to take my car to the dealer every 2 days Mercedes cla 250. They changed the spark plugs and ignition coils twice. Today they changed the fuel injector supposedly it was clogged. Drove the car 30 minutes after picking it up and started shaking horrendously and the engine started gurgling. Now it’s giving me a p0302 code when back then it would consistently give me the p0304 code for cylinder 4 misfire. Now it’s saying cylinder 2. How do I get to the bottom of it. They keep fixing it and it keeps giving the same issue

    • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Kamlya, Sorry to hear you experiencing this. . Given the changes in error codes from P0304 (cylinder 4 misfire) to P0302 (cylinder 2 misfire), the problem might not be with individual spark plugs or coils. Here’s a strategic approach:
      Compression Test: Request a compression test on all cylinders to check for any mechanical issues that might be causing the misfire.
      Fuel System Cleaning: Since a clogged injector was mentioned, consider a full fuel system cleaning. Sometimes, more than one injector could be affected.
      ECU Check: Ask the dealer to check the Engine Control Unit (ECU) for any software issues or the need for updates.
      Seek a Second Opinion: If the dealer continues to struggle with diagnosis, consider taking your vehicle to an independent specialist with a good reputation for working on Mercedes.
      Persistent issues like this can be challenging, but a thorough check of the systems involved should help in pinpointing and resolving the underlying cause. Really hope this helps

      Hi there, Sorry to hear that. • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @mooniivlogs, Dealing with an oil leak in the valve gasket that led to a misfire in cylinder 4, and then replacing the spark plugs and a coil to remedy shaking and vibrations is a good step. However, if you're still experiencing jerking, albeit reduced, there are a few possible causes to consider:
      Remaining Oil Contamination: If oil leaked into the spark plug wells due to the valve gasket issue, it might have contaminated the ignition coil or other spark plugs. Even though you've replaced one coil and all spark plugs, there could still be some residual contamination affecting the ignition system.

    • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Based on your description, it seems like there may be an issue with the ignition system, specifically related to the ignition coils not firing. Here are a few potential causes:
      1. Ignition control module: If all four coils stopped firing simultaneously, the ignition control module (ICM) might be faulty. The ICM is responsible for sending the signal to the coils to fire.
      2. Wiring issue: Check for any damaged, loose, or corroded wiring connections between the ICM and the coils, as well as between the coils and the spark plugs.
      3. Crankshaft position sensor: A faulty crankshaft position sensor can cause the ignition system to fail, as it helps determine the timing of the ignition and fuel injection.
      4. Camshaft position sensor: Similar to the crankshaft position sensor, a failing camshaft position sensor can also cause ignition issues.
      5. Security system issue: In some cases, a malfunctioning security system can cause the ignition to be disabled.
      Since all four coils stopped firing at the same time, it's more likely to be an issue with a common component like the ICM or a sensor, rather than individual coil problems.
      To diagnose the issue, you may need to use a scanner to check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and perform further testing on the ignition system components. Consider having a professional mechanic inspect your vehicle if you are not comfortable with performing these tests yourself.
