Thomas, I enjoyed, appreciate, and agree with all your findings. We have a 2021 BMW X5 45e since August 2020. It is an outstanding vehicle. This month we have added a 2024 BMW iX 50 base model with fabric seats and just a few options. We have EV chargers in our homes. The X 5 45e is terrific for local and highway driving, but it will be mostly used around town in the future as 38 miles is its EV limit. We will use the iX to commute 280 miles between our homes. I love the X5 45e. I hope in time, I will love the iX 50. Thank you.
been driving the IX for a month now, must say it's definitely the best car I have ever had. from both the driving experience and sitting comfort. I am not a big fan of engine sound so the quietness is awesome, and I love the instant acceleration and the convenience of recharging that the EV has, never having to go to any gas station is a great feeling. and the look of the IX is outstanding, easily becomes the eye-catching point when it's out and about.

Got both, I switched from the X5 M50d (2019) to the iX50. If we exclude the combustion vs electric engine conversation, I would choose the iX. I personally love its look and interior design. But that's a personal parameter. Driving wise, I feel more relaxed and comforted in the iX. However, I miss the X5 "commander" driving experience. To me, the iX is more refined and quieter, the X5, more elegant and dynamic.

I would fully agree. While my car was in the shop, having some work done, I was given a iX as a loaner, and I fell in love.
I had an X5, switched to the IX, its an fantastic car, the IX looks fantastic in nature ! I´am happy. A lot of people talking about the IX, but most of them didnt see the car or drove it.
I drove it and I get what you are saying. Definitely feels more spacious and modern inside, very comfortable and I prefer the huge screens over the x5/x3 but personally can’t get over the look, no matter how hard I tried. I’m glad you love yours but for many it’s a hard pill to swallow. ( I went for the iX3 at the end)

We just got our IX 50 a few days ago. We had a 21 X6 40i and it was a great SAV. However, we already have fallen for the IX.
Yes, the exterior styling is subjective, we actually like it. It actually looks better in person.
The ride is so much better and the openness of the cabin makes it very rewarding .
There was a small learning curve coming from OS7 to OS8, but nothing too negative. In fact, it's more customizable with putting in shortcuts. Also, you get used to using the voice interaction.

Thanks Derrick. I am switching from a G05 2021 X5 40D to the IX M60 in May. We have a big solar roof on the home as well. What made me do it is the cost of 8 grand a year in Diesel and also the quietness of the ride. Enjoy your IX :-)

@@metalmilitia224 I'm 6 ft 4 and they are pretty comfortable for me...howerer I have small nitpick to mention:
-massage function is very limited, worse than other bmw models; probably because of the additional bowers&wilkins speakers inside the seats.
-the bottom of the seat is tenting up, checking on bmw IX forum, looks like it's a common issue both on amido leather and sensatec
Mentioned the ride is more comfy w the iX. Did you have air suspension in both cars?

I have an iX and before I drove the 745e.
This iX is definitely the best car I ever had.
Powerful, spacious, safe and well equipped.
As a biker, the iX has a big advantage of course with its trunk.
It's design raises a lot of discussion, however I like it!
X5 has range and is much easier and safe to operate with buttons to press in stead of searching through screens while driving. With the X5 45e you can drive electric locally and bypass all fast charger queues in the holidays. That is comfort!
You don’t need to search through the screens with the iX. The voice control works very well, and no need to take hands off steering wheel to reach for a button.

A thoroughly good comparison. I have a 2020 X5M50i that will be three years old in August. Perhaps the best all around vehicle I have owned. Excellent comfort and performance. I also tow a 6500lb car hauler with ease. The air suspension and rear steer make it both refined and maneuverable. I like the IX M60 in black with bronze trim, but e cars are still not ready for prime time especially when I consider how well the X5 can tow and have decent range.
Love the EV vs Gas comparison and good to see apart from the normal comparisons out there electric vs electric Tesla killer etc. Would love to see more of these in other segments… keep up the good work!!!

I'd take xdrive45e, the best from both worlds, better interior and exterior
Since gas sucks it’s just a worse EV in my option
the ix definitely feels luxurious. I just got mine this monday. (ix 50 full option) The exterior is starting to grow on me. I'm wrapping mine with PPF Stealth and deleting the blue edges on the logo's

Fantastic decision for next 10 years, till BEVs can do 500 miles and has better charging infrastructure.

Happy with my X5 45e. I considered the IX, but looks are important to me and the front/ sides of the IX is ugly and hasn´t grown on me. Rear looks good. Great review Thomas. You are the best out there!

But as follow-up question, what about petrol vs. electric, now that EU starts to talk about restricting sales of ICEs from 2035?
Probably, buying a new ICE car now, will drop its price drasticaly in a few years due to the above.
But still, i really still prefer the ICE to the electric motor.
Excellent and entertaining compatson. I went through the same exercise few months ago deciding between a x5 m40, x5 45i hybrid or iX 50.. ended up purchasing the iX 50 fully loaded and dont regret this choice. To me although I prefer the style of the X5 the iX is more efficient, I never go to a gas station where we all are hostage to fluctuating gas prices. Interesting thing is with the iX 50 you have v8 type power without the high petrol consumption. Lastly the only caveat I find oin this comparson is that you compare iX 50 to x5 M50 v8, you outline that the v8 has 250km/h top speed vs 200 for the iX and that acceleration is similar but in your closing arguments you mention that the x5 m40 v6 is a wiser option.. I guess we cant have it both ways, also annual fuel/energy cost should be discussed because it is part of the decision making.. thanks for the great video, cheers from Quebec

Never had i4 40 on your channel, in retro it would be a good comparison with i4 m50 which has been on channel earlier, which is heavier, with less steering feedback and more power

@@dragospahontu Unfortunately, Honda isnt willing to share those gems with other parts of the world for some reason.
@@kingneptune886 well they're not made for the European market. Those engines use way too much fuel for us. There's no reason for Acura to invest in developing new power trains for the EU or other markets.
I guess so, I do think the consumption figures some Europeans are feeding us are disingenuous. We may find the equivalent Acura isn't that far off.

I would personally have preferred a comparaison between the plug-in version and the iX, in my city the V8 is just too expensive because of additional taxes (Geneva, Switzerland but the same would be true in the whole territory of France as well)
Agree! i’m torn between these 2 also. Second hand X5 45e and iX40 are priced very similarly.
I only get 550km range in my M50i. I get about 16-17L/100km (14-16.5mpg) depending on if I’m driving only in the city or 50/50 hwy.

Thanks to your excellent comparison and your insightful commentary, I’m happy to say my wife’s new X5 M50i just arrived! She prefers, like you, iDrive 7 so was excited to be able to buy before the LCI. While she would typically have chosen the v6, at the time we ordered it in the US, they did not offer the multi contour seats (only in the PHEV). Also, like you recently mentioned your BMW 3 vs 5 series video, seat comfort is paramount for her, so we were “forced” to the m50i. Interestingly, BMW USA has, again, started offering multi contour seats in all of the v6 models. If those had been available when we placed the order, we probably would have gone for the v6 as you recommend for the fuel savings. Having said that, I think we are both happy the seats weren’t as this was an excuse to buy our first M Performance vehicle. The v8 is just so much fun and sounds awesome. It brings a smile to your face every time we hear it start up.
So, thank you for all of your hard work and efforts, which directly influenced our decision on our new baby 😊.
Also, I’d be remiss to say how incredibly awesome your 4k videos look on my brand new 85” TV where seating distance is a mere 12 feet. Yes, I’m literally watching Thomas on the big screen! (In US, “on the big screen” is expression for movie theatre / cinema). All I need now is some popcorn when I watch your videos!

The X5 is amazing and always has been, I have had numerous. However, changed to IX for tax reasons and it’s probably the best car I have ever had.
So if you put the 45e in this comparison, how would you order the 3 autos in favorability? Great comparison with iX and X5M!

Really good idea for a review Thomas - I am a petrolhead an owned many fast cars but currently have an EQC AMG as a daily. The range is crap but I’m totally converted to fast EVs for daily driving. The instant power is very addictive 💪 The range on the M50 is a winner for me.

I prefer the design of the X5 without a doubt, especially in terms of the user interface with real buttons.
The IX is an impressive drive, however I found the seats lacked lumbar support. This can be resolved on the drivers seat through adjustment, unfortunately lumber adjustment is no longer available for the front passenger seat and this is why I chose not to buy the car. There are some issues that also need to be addressed, there is nowhere to store the rear parcel shelf. The rear windows will only go halfway down. The ride after my X5 with air suspension is poor unless you order it for your IX. Placing so many controls on the front screen is a backwards step and a big concern if it appears on the next X5.
I need to lose weight. Hope it doesn’t get out of control …
I enjoy my daily X5M Competition and I like the classic display.
I have the x5 45e (21) and about to pull the trigger on iX (24) as the second household vehicle. We will use 45e on road trips and iX as the daily driver.
For me the X5, with the hybrid engine. Now in susteinability, I think the syntetic fuels are the way to go
I have the M40i and I think it is the best engineered SUV
I was about to buy the iX and here why I backed out
- The interior of the ix is not as luxurious as the x5 especially if you see both at night
- the steering of the ix is weirde look and I cannot like it (I tried)
- the curved screen in the ix is not nicely integrated with the dashboard it seems out of place
- the outside front and side design is not as attractive as the x5
The ix 50 really drives good and handles good but I decided to keep my x5 for those reasons. It is still a great EV product, maybe the best EV SUV. But the x5 for me is a winner, I totally agree with your opinion in the video. Great job!

Fantastic comparison! X5 here as well for a couple reasons. For one, the exterior design is much better than ugly, bizarre iX. For another, availability of iX is non-existent and will likely stay that way for a good chunk of time to come.
Indeed, the dealers give min 2 years to deliver iX50 while for iX40 is more acceptable but the range is rubbish on 40 version.
@@Leskylor As far as delivery goes try a few different dealers. I placed an order in May and my iX is built and at the port ready to be shipped here for delivery in early August. Also its a 2023.

I own a BMW X5 M50i, which is a fabulous car, and I absolutely love it. Yesterday, BMW invited me to drive the XM. I enjoyed that but didn't feel it gave me $60,000 more experience than my own car. However, while there, I also drove the iX xDrive50 and the M60. Wow! They were amazing cars. If I were going to swap my car for an electric model, it would probably be one of those. I really didn't like iDrive 8, though. Removing the buttons was a huge mistake!

The beauty and the beast
I am “transitioning “ from a RR Sport which is dead in Paris ( 2012 with 360.000 KM) . Will take time and restore myself as she is a Zermatt edition.. But I was searching for a replacement and my budget was 50k euro. We found a IX40 at the local BMW dealer Strasbourg .. price 2022 model , 14.000km for just under 60K€.. BMW offers a 9K € zero interest loan which gives a 5 year extended warranty ( why not free money and a guarantee)
So I am forcing myself from one extreme to the other . An X5 V8 would be a dream . But not in my budget and the ever increasing Fuel prices ( or govt imposed limitations like last year) so I need to plan my trips differently .
And yes I love the German “Villian” driving and “ mit Vorfahrt eingekauft “ mentality you display in your testing
The X5 still has a nice future ahead. It has always been and will remain the family SUV of choice, and in terms of looks it just doesn’t get any better.
In the US the Lexus RX is the family SUV due to the reliability and customer care services.

Love the drive and the technology of the IX. Been driving it for almost 2 months. Only complaint are the seats. The X5 seats are longer allowing for people that are taller not to feel like half their handstring is in the air, like Japanese cars. Otherwise looks great, drives great and gives you iver 300 mile range.
As an IX 50 owner, I 1000% agreed with what the video said regarding to the driving experiences of the two. I tested drove the x3 m40i and IX before making the purchase decision, apparently the x3 m40i made me much more excited during the test drive because the sound the shifting progress made me feel so connected to the car. IX on the other hand, was super fast and smooth. Perfect car, but I just don't feel I'm part of it. From the video, it seems like X5 M50i is a plus version of X3 m40i in terms of the driving experience. I really really miss that feeling.
However, IX's interior is superb, which attracted my wife. Considering that it's always my wife make the final call for big purchase in our family, IX 50 wins.

I will enjoy my X3 M40i until I have to return it in 18 months. Maybe by then there will be more choices. I like the iX since it’s bold statement and has good performance.
IX all the way I would never go back to a combustion vehicle
Thanks for a good presentation, but I think you miss the most important question, what will you use the car for and who is responsible for the costs. If you are only going to have it as a commuter car and the employer covers all costs and infrastructure, then the IX is the obvious choice. If, on the other hand, in addition to work commuting, you will use it as a work vehicle and tow caravans or horse transport, then the X5 is the obvious choice. The area of use or the requirement spec is what determines, then it is of course a bonus that the car is stylish and comfortable and you enjoy it.
Just a bit of advice,

I am the owner of an iX 50 and I can tell you I would have not bought it if I knew certain things.
For example: 1- there is NO VENT directed at the feet on the driver and passenger next to it. 2- The microphone is located on top of the driver's head and I need to yell for the person on the other side of the phone to understand me. 3- The app could be more rich in features. 4- The seats could be more comfortable.And I could go on more....
I don't know about Germany but in France, CO2 malus had become insane and for the X5 M50i V8 it will cost you 40K€ on top! Needless to say that price wise the TCO of these 2 cars don't compare at all!! I've personally owned an IX 50 for a month now and it's Christmas every day! I was used to EV already as I owned a Model S 100D before but there is also no hesitation between the Tesla and the BMW. Thomas, I am a big fan of your channel and your initial test helped me making up my mind. Keep doing what you do well

I don't know... the iX really does look like the future the more I look at it. At first I didn't like it but 'in the flesh' it really is very nice.
I prefer the classic layout within.
The front of the iX reminds me of Mater from the movie cars.

Funny... In Norway the price for the IX is pretty similar. If you want X5 M50i you'll need to fork up 200k at least.

The gasoline engines at least can last for 10-15 years. The question is what happens in 10-15 years with an electric car. Will the electric car still exist? Will it still be operational?

If you compare the PS only - yes, these two would be comparable. However, from the X5 line-up, I'd say the closest to iX is a hybrid diesel powertrain. WIthin the city limits you'll be using electricity almost exclusively, and for longer journeys there's the diesel engine. For someone who does not make long journeys - sure, any of the petrol engines would suffice and I'd assume second-hand cars from Germany/Holland would be available at a good price.
IX is not for me - mainly, the design is weird, and secondly the infrastructure is still somewhat limited. But most importantly - it's way too expensive with very, very uncertain residual value. If I was a betting man I'd say this generation of electric vehicles will depreciate in value much faster (given the research and improvement that we're seeing right now)

I suspect the reality is that customers for either of these will not be considering the other. One is hardly likely to be choosing between a sonorous V8 or an EV…

Love your content and this comparision which I have been waiting for, however I believe you have the wrong trunk capacity figures, the X5 has 650l for the ICE versions (500l in the 45e) and the iX has 500l, all figures according to BMW. In the video you say 500l for X5 and 400l for the iX.
Yes indeed, I was referring to space under the cover only. Total space is 500 vs 650

Since the capacity is lost lower than the cover and the 45e has 150l less than the ICE X5 I would guess the 45e has a capacity of 350l under the cover?
Since the X5 looks so much better, it destroys the iX for me just with that.
I agree with you - that grill is fine on the coupe sedan but not on an suv - take q look st the x9 concept - that grill is much better

I do agree with you, the 23 x5 grill is so much better looking than the IX grill - its too massive for me - will be switching out my 20 RX 450h next year, going back to BMW getting an X5

I'm not into SUV's at all but even then, X5 is a looker and if you are a car lover, looks count. iX isn't exactly eye pleaser 😁

I really enjoyed your review of both the X5 and IX 50. I just purchased an IX 50 over the weekend and will pick it up on Monday. I live in California, and we have a very substantial charging infrastructure. I believe long-term the IX makes more sense and the gas prices in California are ridiculous. I traded a 2020 Audi SQ8 which I loved but it was getting 12 MPG. I would also add the interior of the IX 50 is amazing and looks very futuristic. Have a wonderful day.

Very good comparison, you have a lot of very valid points here. I would say that having owned an EV for nearly 2 years, I don't miss the engine noise or vibration one bit. The addition of artificial noises seems pointless to me. On a recent vacation, the petrol powered rental was extremely frustrating to drive, lacking the instant and effortless torque that I'm used to
The very best reviews! I like ix, but charging network is bust.. you need to USE FAST DC charging which is not built out that well.. if you go to 'normal' charnging you're going to 7kwh instead of 80kwh (or more). It will take you loong time with 7kwh

My 2023 iX It replaced my 2018 X5 40i. As much as I loved the X5 the iX is the best SUV that I have ever experienced
We all know electric has the instant torque and quickness off the line but I’m not chasing 1/4 miles and doing lap times. Where as an ICE or a hybrid still has the motor oil, transmission fluids, spark plugs, exhaust, radiator and gas with the good mpg of a hybrid That said, I will still purchase an ICE/hybrid like my X5 45e over a full electric vehicle and will continue to purchase ICE/hybrids. Now I just need to convince my wife about getting me a Mustang Shelby GT 350, GT 500 or a Ford Raptor. The conservative interior is what I want and need still.
I am switching from X5 M50D to iX xDrive50, whenever BMW will deliver my new car, which I have ordered 9 months ago. 😀
But same for me: the X5 with its round shapes is more beautiful.

@@allaboutcars4835 No, worse: in Germany. And the iX is produced in Germany! The X5 for instance is build in the US.
-You don't get the sense of occasion with an eV upon hard driving, like you do when you can feel and hear eight cylinders, less than a metre away from you, being pounded at high speed. You're way more connected, to a much more visceral experience.
I prefer my new 2022 X5 3.D MHEV - stylish, sporty, comfortable. IX is very interesting car, but I think - not enough masculine, I prefer classic BMW. And I still have my old E70 X5 as a family member too, it’s too good to sell it))
The iX is more premium though, and has more space.

iX has one of the best interior lately
EVs should make a mechanical noise of some sort for the pedestrian sound. Some sort of percussive thrumming on a piece of metal or something like that. Speakers can only do so much.
BMW still makes cars with very high quality interiors both in build and materials. They don't cheap out where my once beloved brand Mercedes does now. So I'm looking to switch brands but while I feel Mercedes is more reliable long term (at least the older ones) I wonder how is BMW's long term reliability. Love the X5. It's interior build and material quality as well as overall ride quality is honestly so far ahead of the GLE that it makes the GLE look like a first attempt.
