Beyond "No Compromise," The 2022 BMW iX is Simply Better Than An X5

  • We're used to EV SUVs and Crossovers being slightly smaller, or slightly less capable than their gasoline counterparts, but no more. BMW's carbon fiber intensive iX proves that BMW is all-on on electrification because they have created an EV that's bigger inside with more legroom, headroom, cargo room, and better performance than the gasoline model for less cash. Yep, the iX manages to be less expensive than a comparable X5 even before the tax credit. That makes this buck-toothed EV the ultimate no-compromise BMW. Even stranger? I kind of dig the front bumper...

    This is my first of your videos. Well done...the only review that shows the hood-open pulls.
    It's worth mentioning BMWs electric motors: no magnets. No rare earth elements. And therefore, no drag. One inherent shortcoming with using rare-earth metals in EV motors is the drag in magnetic fields remaining continuously active. This is why Teslas always and almost all other EVs drag like you're riding the brakes. BMW EVs can coast like a conventional torque converter transmission.

      I looked at Lyriq as well. The problem for me was the first year only came in rear wheel drive and you could have any color you wanted as long as it was silver or black. Another deciding factor for me was no test drives allowed. No way I am shelling out 90K plus for a car I never drove before. BMW did themselves a huge favor by having the test drive vehicles out for folks to get a feel for the car. Once I drove the IX for the first time, I was hooked.

    The fast charging times are a bit embarrassing considering the price of the vehicle. It helps that it has decent range, but I could charge my Ioniq5 almost 3 times from 10-80% in the time that it would take that iX to charge from 10-80% (using the 45 minute estimate you said). You’re right, fast charging time is not as important to most people as it is made out to be, but a $100k family car is going to be used on road trips, and a 45 minute charging stop is definitely on the long side. That said, if it does really have 315 miles of range, that 80% charge would probably get you about 240 miles of range (driving from 80-10%), so that’s not too horrible. I just wish BMW would have done a little better on a “no compromise” EV. All of the 800V architecture cars charge faster than this.

    • @hotrod182
      @hotrod182 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well on a road trip, some of these BMWs are doing the same distance faster on Bjorns trips than 800v Hyundai BEVs.

    • @Wised1000
      @Wised1000 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lets shatter this 800V fallacy right away. Despite only 200kw charging the EQS can still charge to 80% a lot faster than this BMW despite having a slightly larger battery, in fact it can charge to 80% in about the same time as the ionic 5 (800V) despite having a 20% larger battery pack. PEAK charging rate is bunk unless you only want to charge for 15 minutes. Much more important particularly for road tripping is the average charging rate to 80 for which 800 or 400 V is meaningless is a meaningless statistic. With current batteries, charging at very high rates means inevitable heat throttling right around 40 to 50% SOC thus hurting your average to 80. In the EQS you can charge at 100kw all the way to 80, 800volt packs are lucky if they are doing 50kW at that SOC. In summary, its much better to jog quickly than to sprint and come in second because you cant keep up the pace.

    • @markmiller3279
      @markmiller3279 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, that would be far more useful. Temperature/battery conditioning can also affect that, but just some specific, standard number for charging time would be a big help.
      I'm very disappointed that other carmakers are following Hyundai/Kia's lead and pushing up charging rates. Sure, most charging is at home, but some of us do take road trips, and DC Fast Charge times do matter. I won't buy an EV that charges as slowly as this. I don't need a huge back seat, so the Genesis GV60 is looking very attractive. I'm also waiting to see what the charging is like on the GV70 EV, as I really like the styling and size of the ICE version.

    • @ouch1011
      @ouch1011 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually find that to be far less useful, especially since the “miles added” vs the amount of charge added varies *substantially* depending on driving habits, weather, vehicle load, etc. You might add 20 miles/min when charging in ideal weather conditions, but only 15 miles/min when in cold/wet conditions, or maybe only 10 miles/min when towing, all without changing the charging speed or amount of energy added. So, saying how much amount of energy or percentage of the battery charge is added is far more useful because it doesn’t depend on driving conditions/ the efficiency of the vehicle at that moment.
