It’s time for BMW EV vs ICE head-to-head! Mat’s sat in a true BMW behemoth, the X7 M50i, and he’s lining up against the all-electric iX 50!
Trust us, this one is going to be close…
Starting with the X7, it’s powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can deliver 530hp & 750Nm of torque. It comes equipped with all-wheel drive as well as launch control, and it tips the scales at an almighty 2,490kg!
However, the iX isn’t exactly a slouch! Its two electric motors put down 523hp (just 7 less than the X7), and it’s actually up on torque, producing 765Nm! It’s slightly heavier though, weighing in at 2,520kg.
So, they’re pretty even, but does electric have what it takes to bring down petrol? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

@@maerklin29800 Environmentally friendly's a bit of an exaggeration. Better than the X7? Sure. Want to be environmentally friendly, buy less drive less.
I'm guessing that aerodynamics play a big role here, X7 is a brick, and the iX is surely optimized for airflow around the car as much as possible, like all the other EVs.
I think it’s the lack of gear changes. It looks like it has a single large gear. That’s why it has that minor top end. 125 is tiny. The aerodynamics would make very little difference.

The x7 has the same drag coefficient as a bmw m140i of .34 but you are right the ix is better it’s .25. But just saying. For a brick looking car it’s actually not that bad
@@lbnewell23 with all of that considered, it’s still improbable that it makes that much difference. Me thinks it’s the lack of gear changes.
Remember those mopeds from back in the day. The ones with single gearing. They ran until they ran out of breath. The same thing is happening here. It runs out of spool at 125.
Yup, definitely aerodynamics on the drag race and low center of gravity for the braking test.
I was sure the drag race would go exactly the opposite way. With the EV jumping ahead at the start, followed by getting reeled in at higher speeds.

The superchargers still put tesla in a better situation. And on range and performance they still seem to be a little ahead. I'm still yet to find an electric car I actually like.
Hey:) The braking limit depends on the grip that the tires can produce. That grip is mostly up to the tires themselves, the weight of the car, suspension, weight transfer and the abs system. I dont think the regeneration has anything to do with this. Your limiting factor is grip. All brakes that work correctly and haven't overheated, should anyways be strong enough to lockout the tires. meaning the regeneration has 0 effect on brakes at that point. Great vid!

I believe it’s the aero that gives the advantage to iX. The frontal area is smaller and gaps are much better closed on iX.
Adding a couple times of comparable vehicles that have been tested previously after every race would be a cool addition

@@Kurre. hmm sure, its bigger, has a 3rd row, looks better in my opinion, nothing beats a good old v8, interior is super nice, over all a great car.. Electric cars are super good but my PREFERENCE is still the x7, your opinion might vary which is perfectly alright, liked this spec too.

EV speed limit is to protect the batteries from continuous high load. it could go much faster, but you would quickly fry the batteries under peak load for such a long time. There is a HUGE difference between continuous power output at 125mph vs 155 mph as air resitence is portional to cude of velocity.
Not true in this case. The iX M60 has the same battery and can do 155mph. The standard iX has different motors that are only geared to 125mph where it reaches it's rev limit.

@@7ludi you might be right in this case, I have a model S performance, the top speed is definitely artificially limited there... max ive had it to is 260kmh, I guess if you have a cooling system good enough then you can do as much load as you like...

All cars build speed when accelerating. You have literally no measure to judge the ix by other than an x7. Electric motors can be geared however the company desires.

Looking at the specs I thought the EV was going to bury it instant torque and all, the choice is clear, just get the ICE version and do a simple tune, it will destroy it while actually sounding and looking decent. He had a point: the future is not a looker.
And then you pull up to a M60 and then what? EVs are simply smoother better vehicles and the future

X7 has been on the market for years, so will probably be more reliable than the new iX. X7 offers more room, ground clearance and has superior ergonomics.
IX has one of the most spacious interiors on a BMW. However it only has 5 seats and a smaller boot.

Hey Matt for the break test at the time when you guys hit the line wasn't that BMW iX behind of you that's why it had a better stopping chance because both of you wasn't level or is it the camera angle??? Look over the clip at 8:50
Doesn't make a difference...if both cars are doing the same speed, it just effects when they stop, not where. Breaking distance remains the same.

This drag race perfectly highlights the big weakness of EVs, and it is not range (by itself) but high speed performance. How come a 500+ HP car tops out at 125 MPH? Top speeds are limited across the board for EVs, even in motorsports such as Formula E. The dirty secret is that battery drain is exponentially faster the faster these cars go, so they are never going to match their ICE counterparts at same power/price points for sustained top speed.
Anyone spending the big bucks on a "high performance" EV should rightfully expect sufficient top speed - granted it is only on German Autobahns that the true top speeds can be utilized but it is still a sucky feeling that the "powerful electric vehicle" has the same top speed as a mid-range sedan or hot hatch. And I'd wager at even a top speed of 125 MPH the battery would drain out in 10 or 15 minutes, the range reducing to a fifth of the claimed range.
For these reasons plus of course the heavy weight of the batteries I don't expect sports cars to be all-electric anytime soon.
No, it is just BBA week and low EVs not for Tesla. they are just far behind from Tesla. And overpriced.
