  • Automotive reviews are fun to do but many times I learn more about vehicles by actually spending time with their owners. This week on EV Rider we're taking a ride in a 2023 BMW iX xDrive 50 owned by Cory France, who previously had a Tesla Model Y.

    I switched from a Model X performance to an iX, day and night the iX has better range, quieter, way more options … So all the complaints that the comparison should have been made to an X and not a Y, here you go.

    I came from a Bolt EV. Actually had 2 of them, I gave one away to a family member who lives in another part of town. My wife, however, loves her Bolt EV so that's okay. We paid cash for all our vehicles. Back to BMW, I love my fully loaded iX50. Glad it has wireless Apple Car play compared to my Bolt which had to plugged in.

    Same problem with our Model X 2021. Even in summer (where heat pump is not relevant even), range at 120kph highway, is just around 300km, for a car rated with 600km. 50% range drop on winter...
    iX, routinely get 500km, now that we are at fall.

    I think this could be a teachable moment for the EV Rider that they should address the elephant in the room directly. While the model X was brought up it’s natural to wonder why the price difference with the was not discussed more. I’m hoping that competition will eventually motivate Tesla to make cars that have more features rather than just making them cheaper.

      Tesla is the pioneer and until now the market leader - they are spread thin because they also do charing, solar, robots, hyper loops you name it. Maybe its because of that they start to fall behind. To have more and more choice is a good thing for the customers.

      @@EVRider I don’t understand why there is so much bickering between electric car owners and fans because the EV market is big enough for everyone. We’ve owned a Tesla Model 3 since August 2018. It’s a great car and there were only a few alternates back then. Tesla’s main benefit is effortless Supercharging for road trips, but once that is gone Tesla had better start spending some money instead of counting every penny from cutting everything that they can. Tesla is trying to do everything by vision instead of paying for any sensors and it’s not working! Thank you so much for your excellent channel! No one should be arguing because none of it really matters.

    I have a 2024 IX M60, and I wish I had waited for the 2025 model year, which is already available in Europe and as early as March 2024 in the U.S. The 2025 receives the new M-style steering wheel and dark accents for the interior instead of gold and bronze. Carbon fiber trim for the M60 would have been nice! We do need that trailer hitch and the IX has it, except BMW doesn't provide it for the US market. ?? It is often hard to put the kid's bike in the back. I also wished the range was better. So far, I am very disappointed with the range and the charging time. I hate the fact that BMW and other automakers get away with the "up to" range. What does that mean? I also wished they had the rear window sunshade. All my other BMW SAVs had them. One would think that for a special car like IX they would have one.

      The video pointed out the iX was in a different price category (th-cam.com/video/tjpNPWG8t00/w-d-xo.html) and the owner was asked if he considered a Model X, which is generally closer in pricing to the iX. As of today, the US base prices of the 3 vehicles before incentives, taxes, etc., listed on the manufacturer websites are:
      Tesla Model Y - $47,490
      BMW iX xDrive50 - $87,100
      Tesla Model X - $98,490
      Depending on options, the iX and X can both quickly top $100,000. A base iX slots in pretty well price-wise between a high-end Model Y Performance and base Model X.

Tesla-approved Supercharger adapters for non-Teslas are expected to start shipping in Q1 of 2024, starting with Ford. BMW expects to transition in 2025. Just as Teslas have access to Electrify America, EVgo, etc., via an adapter, most non-Teslas will have soon have the same access to Tesla Superchargers. It is an ugly design both ext/interior, badly put together in standard medium-quality materials. Clearly evident when compared to a real premium car. Tesla is like the chevrolet of electric cars, right now. Many cheaper cars put loads of gadgets in their cars. But I would never recommend anyone to buy a model S. Since BMW has said it is "closely following the current discussions and developments on the American continent" regarding NACS we may yet see BMW do a deal with Tesla for Supercharger access. Concerning your other comment, it was uncalled for. Please remove it and keep future comments on EV Rider polite.

      BMW will now get access to the Tesla superchargers in the near future and have the NACS port built into the vehicles starting in 2025.

    Range comparisons 1:00 need to be made in context. Fact, the Tesla Model Y Long Range is more efficient at 4.23 miles/Kwh, compared with the BMW ix50 at 3.58 miles/Kwh. So if the Tesla Model Y LR had the same battery as the ix50, it would actually get 445 miles of range, more than enough to get you to Disneyworld and back on a single charge. (Data points BMW ix50 / 105.2 / 377 = 3.58; TMY LR / 75.0 / 317 = 4.23).

      Please remember this was an owner perspective video as opposed to an objective instrumented testing piece between vehicles. While efficiency per mile is more important to some drivers, overall range is more important to others.

      Also remember that the EPA range estimate for MY is not accurate. All Tesla range estimates are below the estimated range according to the Manufacturer and EPA

      Real world you’ll get less than 300 miles in real world mixed driving. ~260 if charged to 100%

    Why not the Model X ? Its a lot faster, more range, also ventilated more comfortable seats, air suspension, more storage, faster charging. same price, 3 years free supercharging. And the most important, Supercharger Network. Good luck on long trips with this car.

      Model X more range? Do some homework, this car beats EPA like nothing while Tesla overestimates their ranges by like a lot! And also, good luck with TSLA service if your car ever needs a repair. Last I remember X price was quite higher, but who knows what Elon did to in the last 10 seconds

      I've successfully driven my CCS Mustang Mach-E more than 24,000 miles in a year to 20 US states. Long trips haven't been a problem for me, including a cross-country trip of 4,800-miles, but having access to both the Supercharger and CCS networks (via an adapter) remains an advantage for Tesla owners.

      iX has more range, 0-60 only around 1 second or less difference. The build quality, noise quality, ride quality miles ahead of Model X

    Marketing strategy,
    Bullying underclass Tesla Model Y with BMW iX and not Tesla Model X
    Thank heaven he's not comparing his reasons with Fort Model T.
    Even after switching he's still driving with part of Tesla in it.

    I sold my Model Y and bought a Rav4 Prime. Tesla is quality crap. Modely Y sounds like a tin can in the cabin with lots of rattles.

    • @burnx45
      @burnx45 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How do you like your new Rav4 Prime so far? I've seen the Rav4 can get over 500 miles real world range including highway driving compared to like 220 miles for the Model Y. I have a 2023 Tesla Model Y long Range with about 9,300 miles on it and am thinking of getting a Toyota Rav4 hybrid or Prime when the new 2025 redesign comes out. I am disappointed in the hard ride quality over bumpy roads and the low range of the Model Y.

    • @badimpulses17
      @badimpulses17 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@burnx45 The Prime is a quieter cabin and the ride is more softer it soak up the road imperfections pretty good although not like a Mercedes kind of good but better then the Y. I was so disappointed in the Y I really wanted to like it but the stiff ride and rattle was too much for. Yes the Prime does get around 450 to 500 a tank. If your charge everyday at home you will barely visit the gas station although that depends on you driving range everyday.
