    You have a fantastic way of breaking down complex material to make it understandable to newer plant people like me, but at the same time presenting the most basic ideas without ever talking down to the viewer. Have you ever considered writing a book about plants? I feel like it would be the most well researched, comprehensive guide to plant parenting and I would be the first in line to buy it.

    Best advice I ever heard with a trouble plant that you’re almost done with: chuck it off your porch. I can’t tell you how many plants I thought were done, that I was done with for sure.. throw them outside and even in winter time and they GROW. It’s nuts. Try it.

    Not sure if you said it BC I'm doing planty things while watching but one thing that can cause fungal infections is misting esp if you're heavy handed and it ends up pooling on a leaf. The only time your leaves should be getting wet or damp is of there outside where the wind and sun will evaporate the water quickly or when you're cleaning the leaves 🤷🏼‍♀️

    what you said about the stuck leaves make sense, so I went to have a look at my healthy looking syngonium with 2 stuck leaves and voila! mealybugs.
    also the sticky stuff is normal for some plants, check extra floral nectarine if you are interested. I wipe it off every so often, cos it discolours the leaves and I worry about pests. As it is I see spiders(1cm so I know its not spidermites) and 1 yucky insect which shall not be named

    Thank you so much! Just discovered this sticky stuff on my Calathea, Analque. After examining for pest several times, and finding no sign of anything, I was stumped. Then I watched your video, and realized that this is exactly what my plant is displaying...and after reviewing my watering journal, and listening to your explanation of water stress, I am sure that that is what I have here! From my experience, after bringing home a Philodendron (or any Aroid) purchased from a plant store, or bought online (shipped/delivered), and it happens to have a new leaf growth that has not yet unfurled or partially unfurled, that new leaf will remain 100% unfurled.
    Then sometimes (not always), the next one will also be unfurled.
    If that second one also does not unfurl and there is a third one already coming out, then I cut off both the first leaf (did not unfurl) and the second one so that the third would unfurl (100% works since the plant now focuses its energy on that newest leaf growth; and not struggle further; plus, the plant has already acclimated to its new home, and is not stressed anymore).
    If the second one unfurls, then consecutive leaves unfurl as well (again, from my experience 😊); and I just cut off the first leaf (did not unfurl).

    This video is simply brilliant - I haven´t seen anyone on the Internet to cover this topic in any way that would be even close to this perfection.
    Watermelon peperomia: you also don´t know, why the leaves are cracking. I spent hours searching, tested everything possible and still don´t know why :-D It reached a point when I just gave up - the plant is growing well, but looks a bit rough :-D I believed it´s too much water or pest, but doesn´t seem to be ...maybe that´s how the plant grows even in the wild

    For stuck leaves, a tiny drop of detergent or even soap free wash applied by the tip of your finger around the sheath above where the leaf has bulged out, then a drop of water to spread it slightly, wil make the leaf pop out almost with no further help. And no damage, unless it ws bulged too far and already split the stem. Just like a stuck ring on your finger😂. Love your videos and your generosity sharing your knowledge. Greetings from Central Queensland, Australia 🤗.

    Ty! I brought home my first begonia maculata and it's been getting brown crispy edges and brown crispy spots on a couple of leaves. Before watching your video I thought i mt was due to my humidity being too low for the plant and it just needed to get used to it, however watching your video made me realize it's actually been getting direct light hitting those leaves during the day and that is probably what caused the browning. I've now moved the plant to indirect light and i will keep an eye on it. Hopefully you just helped me save it! 😊

    One thing on the sticky leaves topic: some kinds of philodendrons produce nectar out of their leaves which makes them sticky and the plant does it to attract ants in the nature to help protect the plant. My philodendron pedatum does that for example

    Most difficult thing I did today was try to find a spot in my ZZ to put the water meter thing in. Like "no I'm growing here, here to, stop it!" It was a 2-3 on the meter in the spot it allowed so it's had a beverage now. Perhaps it wants Perrier or something carbonated since it's my diva plant 🤣

    One other quick thing, I noticed upon close scrutiny of my beautiful plant that on those that had sticky stuff on the undersides, the plant has teeny tiny spots where it looks like the green color has just faded...doesn't look terrible, but it is there, where it was not when I first bought the plant, and this coloration does not exist on the newer leaves.

    I’m a newbie and learning about plants. This video very helpful. I have an app on my phone that I diagnose problems with and any speck of brown (app says it brown spot of leaf rot). I pluck those leaves. Is this the correct thing to do?

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those apps are awful. I’ve tried all of them out and they all always diagnose everything as overwatering, underwatering, or pests. If your brown spots are rot or from a fungal or bacterial issue then yes remove them

    • @melissaalexander1042
      @melissaalexander1042 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So not all brown spots are bacterial or fungal? I guess that is what I was asking. Should I be plucking these leaves when there is a brown speck on them

    I was always told that yellowing but moist was overwatering and brown but crispy was underwatering. And if you get to the brown crispy stage and you water too much then your prime for root rot.

    Thanks for the all the information! Saved it for future references. I have a Aglaonema that grow smaller leaves (like 3) when I first changed the potting medium from soil to water then LECA.
    I have a Philodendron Birken that I don't quite understand. I switch it from soil to water, and the leaves started growing in the water. When I lift the plant up higher (only the root touches the water and not the stem), and the leaves are kinda growing pointing downwards? Its growing into quite a sizeable plant now and only recently the leaves started growing "looking up".
    I have no idea why.

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hmm, interesting. It’s hard for me to say why without seeing it but it sounds like you’re saying it’s not doing it anymore so maybe it was just acting a little weird while it was trying to acclimate from being moved from soil to water.

    When it comes to stuck leaves; especially on those humidity loving philodendron put them in a overly well draining mix like pon or straight perelite and vermiculite or whatever and water them almost daily. It will simulate the rainfall as if it was under another big leaf. It atleast that's what started to work for me 😃

    Great info
    Question... my large form monstrea has been putting out leaves that are black and won't unfurl in time to not fall off ... I'm assuming it's needing a repot and I'm trying to wait until spring when I can take the huge pot outside to do it... any other ideas I might be able to address before I drag this plant out of the massive pot?

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally black leaves if it’s not getting too hot would have me concerned that you might potentially have a bad root rot situation going on especially if they’re falling off. Definitely get it out of its pot and see what’s going on. Let me know how the roots look. You can always DM me a pic on Instagram or Facebook so I can see for myself.

    I've tried watering more, less using distilled, rainwater, fertilizer(every other water) , more light, less light.

    I wish humidity was the issue with the defective leaf births! Ive been at 70 percent all summer and lost several pink princess leaves and bipenifolium leaves. The only thing I can think is if in nature they would likely be born in the actual rain to help lubricate the leaf sheath. I don't catch them at often as I used to in order to spray them and help the leaf be born, cuz I'm now an unregistered plant midwife 😳 when I was first coddling my plants I always caught them
    IMO it's a sign that not all hybrids should've been released when they were but money spoke, so at have plants that can't figure out how to keep themselves alive and that don't have stable variegation, making them doubly difficult.

    just adding this here: my Calathea plants few months after they had been moved to Lechuza Pon got brown spots around the edges which in time managed to dry out the entire plant. I lost several Calathea due to this type of substrate but I don't want to remove it due to the flies which appear on the normal soil/compost. Any piece of advice in regards with over-fertilized soil?
