Philodendron: Bacterial Leaf Spot | How To Treat It & Save Your Plant

  • Hello, plant people! I hope you are all doing great! This week, we are in for a shorter and more serious video. I wanted to talk about something I am seeing a lot of on the Internet, especially on Facebook groups - bacterial leaf blight & leaf spot on Philodendrons. This is super common for Philodendron 'Imperial Red' and 'Imperial Green'. No need to panic! This is quite manageable and besides some cosmetic drawbacks, your plant will be just fine, provided you act in time. I hope you enjoy the video and find it useful.

    I agree with you 100%! It’s so difficult sometimes to find some answers when you have a specific problem outside of your common pests or root rot. Especially with diseases or uncommon pests. Thank you for sharing this!

    I JUST purchased a Calathea White Fusion!!!! Omg! This helped me SO MUCH, because I was thinking it was a rust fungus from my research!! Thankfully it was not really close to any other plants aside from an Alocasia Frydek I have, they weren’t however directly touching and I don’t see any signs of this disease on the plant.
    I had absolutely no idea it was a bacteria! I decided to actually play it safe and just get rid of the entire Calathea as I noticed it was spreading quickly and much of it spread right down the stem to the soil level. I’m so glad I got rid of it now hearing that! I wonder if I should take any additional measures even tho it’s now tied up and disposed of in the garbage. I disinfected all the major surfaces of my home. I hope that’s enough.

    Thanks. I just noticed these rings on my Imperial Red. Otherwise very healthy with new growth. I couldn’t find any information so I snipped off all the affected areas on the affected leaves and sprayed Neem oil. Then did more search and found your video. I really hope that this plant survive. It is so healthy, I’m so surprised by this sudden illness. Thanks again.

    I'm so glad I came across your page/video! I have a Red Imperial Philodendron that I purchased last Sept. from Etsy. When It arrived it was absolutley beautiful, but I noticed that one leaf had beeen cut., so it was phsically a three leaf plant. Fast forward to late November, I noticed the yellowish-orange blotches on one leaf, and this one particular leaf was starting to fade. The others are much darker. I was told to spray it with neem oil. Now after watching your video, I know exactly what I'm dealing with. I hate to do it, but I will cut this leaf right now! Also, thanks for the tip to not mist this plant, which I was doing as well.

    Thank you for this video! I recently bought one of these guys from an online shop and it came in beautifully packed and and had very healthy foliage. But during the past couple of days it's been showing signs of these nasty spots on one leaf more than others so it was really worrying me😔. Now I cut the leaf off I'm hoping it will stop being poorly. My Imperial red also showed up with this yellowish-brown spots a few days after buying. At First I thought it got a sunburn,but more and more leaves died back in about 2 days . So I cut all the affected ones and washed the two remaining leaves with 3% Peroxid. Now it's doing well and started growing.😅

    Good to know. Added to my plant knowledge. ❤️😜👍 I am so glad I don’t have much problem with plants . The last I have was scale from my branch new ficus Audrey(2) bought from IKEA. I use 100% rubbing alcohol and ended up destroying lots of leaves and some stems. I trimmed it and now both giving out tons of new growth . I do like the plants to be bushy so cutting the top off wasn’t all lost. I was a little worried that they won’t grow and we are approaching colder weather here in Sydney.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree! Misting is possibly the biggest misconception. Not enough airflow in the house. A sure way to kill Calathea sanderiana is to mist it once indoors.

    • @wendeelee2091

Sometimes it were whole parts of it. The leaves are pretty close together. So it makes sense, that it spread more and more. In the beginning, I only saw it on one leave. • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      This was most definitely bacterial. The plant had not been fertilized and all plants back at the plant store showed the exact sympots that started to spread the same way. In fact, many Philodendron 'Imperial Red' and 'Imperial Green' will be infected - many of them that were imported after all did the same - it starts off with small spots, and it quickly spreads. It is very common, and very well documented in the aroid community, especially for this type of Philodendron. When Summer Rayne Oakes visited Bill Rotolante (Silver Krome Gardens) he also mentions this at one point in the video and says that is why they do not grow certain varities, because they are more prone to developing bacterial leaf spot. But aside from all of this, the sympots were all identical to typical bacterial blight that I cross-referenced with a university article linked in the description and the disease on my plant had been confirmed by a horticulturalist.

I had a micans succumb to these spots recently and now my Brazil is showing the same tiny yellow spots, I'm guessing because it was right next to my humidifier :( This is the most informative video I've come across and I'm hoping I can maybe save the plant by eliminating the problem leaves every day...

      I am sorry to hear that. It surprises me this is common in micans. I only thought it was Imperial Red and Green. I guess I learned something new too.

      @@BasiePlants I'm not so sure if it's common in micans as much as I am very unlucky! But the photos included in the papers you cited are the closest thing I can find to what the micans looked like - here is a link to my photo which will hopefully work. After the spots appeared the leaves wilted and turned pink/yellow before dying. imgur.com/BZ8ZiVQ

      @jannamoen4370 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were no pests that I could find on the micans or on anything else. The Brazil seems to be responding OK to fungicide so perhaps it is fungal blight? Either way, everyone else is getting periodic neem oil showers for the next little while until things clear up, so if I missed any pests hopefully they'll be gone soon! Appreciate the insight and the helpful videos!!

      @@jannamoen4370 I don't think I had fungal blight. I had similar spots like those on my xanadu. They appeared from time to time and I couldn't figure them out. I was annoyed as heck! Then thrips got to it and took care of the problem. 😂 Sorry, that was a bad joke. But I was so frustrated with that plant. I hope they stop appearing for you! Eeeeks. I got 2 Rojo Congos a few weeks ago. And may get 1 or 2 Imperial Reds this week. It's kept outdoors since I got it as I am still deciding where to put it indoors. So far no spots. I will make sure leaves don't stay wet for an extended period of time. Thanks for the tip!
    I live in the tropics. Would that make a difference in your opinion?

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure if this is an issue on congos, as I don't have one. But I can confirm it also happens on imperial green as well. Having wet leaves outside doesn't bother them, because of air circulation. Inside, it's a different story, even with open windows and fans. I am not sure how long can you keep them outside, but I would keep them out as much as possible :)

    Bought a giant imperial online a couple of weeks ago. It had a couple of blotches that I've assumed were just sunburn. Nope. They spread and spread and spread to a completely healthy six year old birkin positioned next to it. I am guilty of wiping the leaves quite vigorously due to living in an area heavy with traffic so smog often forms a layer of dust on all leaves. This seems to have contributed to the spread. But now... I need to cut off leaves bigger than my entire arm and it just hurts. It hurts in advance :(

    I purchased a Philodendron Imperial Green about a month ago and I noticed new leaf trying to shoot out. It also had one old leaf that look as if it was not going to make it. Both leaves died so I reported the plant and fresh well draining soil. I just use a sharp clean sterilized knife and cut off the old dead leaves. Now I'm puzzled over this plant.

      No, nothing is wrong. It is a very slow Philodendron. Mine was outside last year from May to end of September and it only produced 3 leaves or so. It produced couple of more in winter because it was under LED lights. I moved it back again outside in the same spot but this year it burned for some reason. But that's okay, I will do chop and prop video 😂 It just needs time.

    I got a bacterial blight
    And I researched and researched
    I assumed this bacterial blight came from the nursery ( the other plants at the nursery had the same black spots)
    I’ve quarantined it, treated it with liquid copper and now I’m so paranoid, but my rogo isn’t showing any other symptoms other than that yellowing in the younger leaves which is disappearing with the copper and these tiny black dots that I identified on my other plants as blight, but these dots haven’t gotten worse, I don’t know if I’m paranoid and should bring it inside or keep quarantining it
    It looks nothing like your leaves, the leaves are hardy, healthy and it’s producing new shoots so it’s not root rotted

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bacterial blight can't disappear. When leaves lose the coloration, they lose it :) I tried bactericide, and it didn't help. I think you have some other issue. Maybe if it is happening on younger leaves, it could be some deficinency in micronutrients. If the spots don't have "wet" appearance to them, I would say it is not blight.

    I had this same issue on my congo rojo. It ordered it online and it came with a couple leaf tips cut so I was like oh no it was overwatered. The roots were and are still healthy. All the leaves but one had some yellowing. Within two weeks I had to cut all but one leaf off so this must be what it was bc since I chopped those leaves off it hasn't become anymore yellow.. I have an imperial red without it. I just got a prince of orange, another imperial red, and an imperial green. They all look good but I'm nervous.

      @@BasiePlants yes! I was able to stop it. However now the three new leaves are smaller. I had to pull a whole mushy leaf off before it was unfurled and chop all but one leaf off the plant. Then chop the tip of that one leaf. So all I had was one big leaf that I cut the tip off of, and then a small center leaf growth that was inside of another. But it growing quickly now but its almost like a baby again. I keep them away from my humidifier and when I water I make sure I only water the soil instead of the plant. My imperial red, imperial green and my prince of orange are growing healthy luckily!

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can try to use a bactericide. They can potentially work as prevention or early on. I tried spraying bactericide on my Imperial Green and to treat it without cutting, but unfortunately it ended up spreading faster (because water distributed it more on the leaves) and killing the plant. It's a general consensus that mechanical treatment is the best and there is no recognized chemical treatment.

    Steralize any cutting tools you used. Contact the nursery you bought it from so they can change suppliers and ask for a refund. Bacteria can be spread by overhead watering, insects, contaminated tools or soil.The nursery where it was grown either didn't have sanitary practices or grew from contaminated stock. Do not support them. I have seen this on plants from state inspected nurserys and large hardware stores and large mail order nurserys. Theres no excuse and we all benefit if we call out the nurserys and try to return the mess they sold you.
