I like the dunk method! Makes a lot of sense. I’d add about mushrooms that not only do they show your soil has nutrients, their mycelium is one of those things that break cellulose and lignin down and make nutrients available to your plants. They’re part of healthy soil, and if we grow healthy soil, we’ll grow healthy plants too!
✅Suggestion for watering with fewer trips to the tap: a pump sprayer. 👀 They are usually meant for chemical spraying, but when you take off the spray nozzle you have a 1 or 2 gallon watering can and the long handle and nozzle helps to reach plants high and those packed between others. It’s been a game changer for me watering all my babies. You can get different sizes and sometimes get them cheap at the dollar store. 😊 thank you for all your useful tips. I always enjoy you channel!

It was only a few weeks later I told a lady in the garden centre, who explained that it was simply super fertile and happy 😭. I wish this video was available, back then!! So true Richard. I'm sorry that you lost one of your plant babies. I'm so grateful that I now understand that mushrooms are a good thing. Because I thought they were a bad thing as well.
It's a bit spooky, just yesterday I noticed three tall mushrooms growing from the self-watering pot that my small Monstera lives in - and here's Mr. Sheffield mentioning it the day after. Luckily I learned about this symbiotic relationship a couple of years ago, got happy seeing them there, and just left them to live there as they please. I hope they enjoy their stay. 🍄🌱
Seran wrap with the holes reminds of an antique glass flower frog. Actually I have one from my grandmother, I'm going to dig it out and polish the silver part and start my cuttings like royalty ! I use an old two liter plastic soft drink bottle to water my plants, I know it's 2 liters for adding fertilizer and it was what I grabbed years ago from the recycling when my watering can broke. If anyone sees me I just say yes yes 🧐 Gingerale is good for plants!

Another basic helpful trick is to grab a few of those free flower food packets you can get at the grocery store fresh flower section and save the extra ones you get. They are great to prevent cuttings from rotting whether you keep them in the water or water the cuttings with the water. The packets contain some sugar that feeds the cutting and some antimicrobial to prevent rot.

I found Keep milk jugs filled with water .let them sit for at least 4 hours or always have them ready for watering. helps release any chlorine or impuritie gases from newly poured faucet water if you don't get to put your plants outside during winter months. Not sure if collecting winter rain water and letting it go to room temperatures any good for your plants during winter. Haven't tried that yet
The watering can hack really is a game changer, especially because most fertiliser producers give dosage by liter or 3L. And I often mix it with a bio stimulator so going back and forth to mix in my 700ml watering translates to a lot of walking that, silver lining, helps me reach my daily 10K step goal.

I find my moisture meter is often misleading. I’ve confirmed this by taking a reading before pulling the plant out of the pot (for various reasons). And I’ve tried various hydrometers 🤷♀️
Not long since I repotted my peace lily, two small mushrooms sprouted at her feet. I found then charming and was saddened when they perished (they didn't last long😢). It felt like a gift, like having a small piece of the forest at home...
Plastic wrap 4:52 saving my cuttings. Up til now, i use narrow neck glass bottles (repurposed) and tend watering just to topmost root. A few survivng, growing roots fully but very few new leaves stunted growth
These were all really great tips, most I hadn't heard of before, you also have a delightful personality come through which makes the video very enjoyable. I just hope Mrs. Sheffield has a good sense of humor to deal with your jokes at her expense! 😸
This is the first videobi have seen of yours and I subb'd/liked and then began to read the comments. You have such lovely fans/viewers❤❤, i love these people and how they love you!! I feel the love ❤
The problem with moisture meters is they either re ad “bone dry” or “wet wet wet”. They rarely register the in between zone. And the bigger problem is light meters. They tell you how much light is there at that moment. But the bigger issue is for how many hours it is so. A blast of sunlight for an hour at 4pm (but in shade otherwise) makes a spot seem sunny, but a moderate amount of light all day may very well amount to more light. And as cities build up more, that’s how shade patterns fall (due to manmade structures causing shadows). So it’s not so simple as just taking a reading or two.
@jpp7783 Don't even worry about light meters. If you live in your house in the evenings and weekends with lights on, and are not a hermit with the blinds closed 24/7, there is plenty of light. I agree, the light meters are useless and do not track light received during each season. They would be useful if had a lux over time and Max lux, average, etc... I use Seasol and Seasol Liquid Compost 👍 10/10 and reinvigorates the soil!!!
Yes, the moisture meter has saved me from overwatering my "snake plant garden." At first, I assumed I should water it every three weeks or so. My meter tells me otherwise. They are thriving with much less water. Thanks for all of the other hacks. Like the idea of dipping for pests. Much easier than going leaf to leaf.
Love the turkey baster hack. I am going to get one right away. I have deep saucers on all my plants but some times it is a close call. Also I think it maybe handy to water some of my small plants that are hard to reach. Thank you. 😊
Thank you for sharing that first hack! I've been dealing with thrips and mealy bugs on and off this past month. I've been using painter's tape to keep the soil from coming out, which didn't work well. Just tried this hack and it worked great! I have hope that I can permanently get rid of these bugs now! 😊
Thanks for the dishwater trick. One of my favourite plants I've had for years suddenly got riddled with small insects and I took off most of its leaves 😢. I'll try this to save it, I've gotten so attached to it. It always blooms beautifully in the winter.
We also can write on (wooden) clothespeg as a label for the plants, just clamp it on the edge of the pot (or even on the branch?), so it doesnt need to get in contact with wet soil for rotting.
Ah man that Turkey baster is what I need!!! I have a bad back and have to lift big pots up sometimes to move them out of the tray, empty the excess water and then put the heavy pot back.. going to order one today 😄😄
Oooh love these. I am a massive admin nerd and created a Notion table just for my plants! I record its official name, its "known as" name, when I bought it, and the humidity, water and light requirements. I also add notes, a link to a reliable care page and a photo! I'm probably weird in that I actually put all my plants in large shallow storage containers to water them rather than take the water to the plants. I'd love to see a video on where and why you've positioned all of your plants and the types of light you give any that aren't in their "optimal" position because of lack of space. So, "these ones are in east windows but this one should ideally be in an east window but there's no room so it's here with a grow light / hanging up to receive more light" kinda thing. I'm with you on the moisture meter. Mine broke yesterday and I was straight onto Amazon to get another one. That whole "poke your finger into the soil thing" is bobbins. You can't tell if the roots are wet without getting down there to check.
For prorogating cuttings I use shot glasses for the little ones. I have these fancy crystal wine glass shaped ones that look lovely on my kitchen window sill. But the plastic trick will still be useful for the single leaves I pulled off of the box-store floor.
Another great video! I’m basically a houseplant noob, although my Mom had them throughout my childhood. I figured I didn’t inherit her green thumb 😢 since I basically killed any green thing in my home. And that included the fake ones!! 😂 I have since acquired some a bit of skill, as I still have two beautiful and happy violets Mom gifted me 10 years ago. Since finding you channel, I have been inspired try others and now own 10 houseplants besides my violets and they’re thriving! 😮 Thanks again for your short but sweet and full of helpful information videos.
After I started bottom watering I don't need to refill my 2 litre watering can as often. Still, I just got a 1 lite watering to add fertilizer to and use the other one for succulents and recently repotted plants.
Omgosh one of my plants sprouted a mushroom and I panicked and put it outside! I thought it was overwatering and didn’t want it to cause root rot. So bringing her back in 🙃. Always enjoy your videos and humor 🥰
im on the south coast uk, we do most definitely get mozzies here. the soil round here is very much clay like so after lots of rain theres lots of stagnant water for mozzies to lay eggs in. my house gets inundated with them every year.
The mushroom one is something I wish I knew earlier, the key difference between fungi and mold, the fungi can actually be beneficial helping exchange nutrients with the plant in the pot, I saw the spores and growth in my terrarium and freaked out at first but did some more reading

Thank you 😊
Well, I learned things and your acting made me smile ! Thanks !
These were all really great tips, most I hadn't heard of before, you also have a delightful personality come through which makes the video very enjoyable. I just hope Mrs. Sheffield has a good sense of humor to deal with your jokes at her expense! 😸
She’s got thick skin 😅
This is the first videobi have seen of yours and I subb'd/liked and then began to read the comments. You have such lovely fans/viewers❤❤, i love these people and how they love you!! I feel the love ❤
Thank you 😊. I agree a great community here
Love your humor!
Thanks for all the hints and hacks.
Thanks for watching 😁
The problem with moisture meters is they either re ad “bone dry” or “wet wet wet”. They rarely register the in between zone.
And the bigger problem is light meters. They tell you how much light is there at that moment. But the bigger issue is for how many hours it is so. A blast of sunlight for an hour at 4pm (but in shade otherwise) makes a spot seem sunny, but a moderate amount of light all day may very well amount to more light. And as cities build up more, that’s how shade patterns fall (due to manmade structures causing shadows). So it’s not so simple as just taking a reading or two.
It gives you a good steer. You wanna take the reading at a normal time when the sun’s not blasting is my thinking
I'd say that the trick is to average it out.
I was chuckling all the way through the end of this video. I love the humor in the whole useful hacks...thank you. Hilarious!
Glad you enjoyed it!
ive done leafless propogations as well. as long as theres green on the plant it can photosynthesize :)
Truly enjoyed your video and your humorous antidotes. There was good advice as well. Thanks.
Thanks so much!
You're absolutely fantastic!
Wow, thank you!
Glad you found it useful!
Love the turkey baster hack. I am going to get one right away. I have deep saucers on all my plants but some times it is a close call. Also I think it maybe handy to water some of my small plants that are hard to reach. Thank you. 😊
Sounds great!
Brilliant video. Just what I needed to know. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I never used a moisture meter in tens of years of keeping houseplants, instead I just weigh the pot, I got a great feel for it after a while.
Thank you for sharing that first hack! I've been dealing with thrips and mealy bugs on and off this past month. I've been using painter's tape to keep the soil from coming out, which didn't work well. Just tried this hack and it worked great! I have hope that I can permanently get rid of these bugs now! 😊
Happy to help 😁
Thanks for the dishwater trick. One of my favourite plants I've had for years suddenly got riddled with small insects and I took off most of its leaves 😢. I'll try this to save it, I've gotten so attached to it. It always blooms beautifully in the winter.
Hopefully it will do the job
We also can write on (wooden) clothespeg as a label for the plants, just clamp it on the edge of the pot (or even on the branch?), so it doesnt need to get in contact with wet soil for rotting.
Ah man that Turkey baster is what I need!!! I have a bad back and have to lift big pots up sometimes to move them out of the tray, empty the excess water and then put the heavy pot back.. going to order one today 😄😄
It's a game changer!
That’s great. I’ll be filming a tour soon so will include those bits of info
I am a Canadian and new to the plant world. I love your videos and they help alot. I love your accent too! 😂 Jan
@@janicesurette2308 Thank you 😊
These hacks are brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful videos.
Thanks for watching!
thanks again, always enjoy your content as well as learning .
My pleasure!
For prorogating cuttings I use shot glasses for the little ones. I have these fancy crystal wine glass shaped ones that look lovely on my kitchen window sill. But the plastic trick will still be useful for the single leaves I pulled off of the box-store floor.
👍👍👍
Thanks for your time my friend!!
You bet!
Awesome glad you find them useful!
You are hilarious, great information and so funny 🤣 Thank you so much, I love my plant babies ☘️🌵
I love your sense ov humour and thanks for the hacks, all your plants are so lovely and healthy. ❤❤
Thanks!
One of your best videos ever. You made me laugh and learn!!
Wow, thanks!
I learned about the moisture meter from you and I bought 2 on Amazon that are ladybug moisture meters. They're cute and useful! 🙂
My favourite item!
9:46 propagating from leafless. Yay! 10:56 i have that originally to monitor humidity for my books and wood.
Great information, thankyou, I love your tips very useful! Love from Australia
Thanks for watching 😁
I find your way very appeasing therefore easier for me to follow. Thank you.
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the hacks....will start using some.
After I started bottom watering I don't need to refill my 2 litre watering can as often. Still, I just got a 1 lite watering to add fertilizer to and use the other one for succulents and recently repotted plants.
True much more efficient 👍
You're wonderful I so Love this channel very informative, and you're quite fun to watch too! 😂 Thank you!
Thank you 😊
I love this video! I listened to it twice! AD's and all!❤
You're the best!
Great ideas! Thanks
Omgosh one of my plants sprouted a mushroom and I panicked and put it outside! I thought it was overwatering and didn’t want it to cause root rot. So bringing her back in 🙃. Always enjoy your videos and humor 🥰
Thanks!
im on the south coast uk, we do most definitely get mozzies here. the soil round here is very much clay like so after lots of rain theres lots of stagnant water for mozzies to lay eggs in. my house gets inundated with them every year.
Your videos are SO good 🌱👌🏼✨
Thank you 😊
Thank you from Australia
You bet!
The mushroom one is something I wish I knew earlier, the key difference between fungi and mold, the fungi can actually be beneficial helping exchange nutrients with the plant in the pot, I saw the spores and growth in my terrarium and freaked out at first but did some more reading
All great ideas! Love that turkey baster! Thank You!
Thanks for watching 😁
Thank you Richard, for another informative and humorous vid 😁 I love your sense of humour! 😄
