This applies to all houseplants and is a reason to not buy sale plants that don’t look healthy unless u isolate them for a few weeks. Great info for new plant parents. Thanks
I think you are one of the most interesting person talking about plants on TH-cam. You take the time to teach useful information. Although your Hoyas are wonderful. So happy to have found you.
Black Spots on Hoya are also a Symptom of a Shore Fly ingestation. Seen mainly in plants from large growers & Greenhouses. The flies deficate on the leaves (ie. The Black spots). This in turn burns the leaves. Making your plant highly susceptible to fungal & viral infection because it ulcerates the leaves cuticles. If your plants are not properly treated ( The Soil Must Be Treated), the Shore Fly larva will feast on your plants roots and eventually will kill it by rotting the roots or by weakening the plant so much that it succumbs to fungal or viral infections. What will also happen if not treated is the Shore Fly larvae will hatch out of the soil and infest all of your plants. It's a nasty viscious cycle of which came first the chicken or the egg. You could treat for a fungal infection when it may not be a fungal infection yet or maybe starting but what is really going on is an infestation of Shore Fly. Fungus gnats can also add to this problem if not treated.
Thank you So Very Much for this Well Thought-Out, Courteous, & Conscientious informative on your tragic experience. Very BIG & Kind of you to share your wealth of knowledge on this quite begrudging topic. Best of Wishes!
Thank You! I have been looking everywhere on TH-cam for this. It seems no one has info on fungus or black spot but you. Your video was very through and informative. I have a hoya compacta that has black spot, I think. It is still small, and I think I will throw It out, I love that plant, but if it is not going to completely go away then out it goes, don't want it to spread. Thank you for a great video!
@Jessica Parks Good Luck, I hope you can save it. I treated mine than set outside for about a month in chilly weather and now seems fine, no more spots, so mine might have something different.
Very informative. The adjective foe the word naive is naivety. Ur English is almost flawless. I wish I had learnt a 2nd language beyond what was required to complete my syllabus. I use Phyton 27. I'm afraid to use these chemicals as they cause respiratory diseases and cancer.
Love the haircut/new hairdo! I really need a haircut, but the salons are closed in Toronto and have been for months. P.S Great video about fungal infections and very sorry your hoyas got sick.
I would recommend mancozeb or Myclobutanil based fungicide. These didn't seem to have caused any harm to my plants. I had very bad experience with liquid copper - absolutely burned my monstera and philodendron leaves and even made the new shoots deformed.
Thank you!! Yea unfortunately as indoor grower, it's hard to achieve high humidity and air flow at the same time. The imbalance between these two increases the chance of fungal infection. Well... we live and we learn right? 😅
@@amandalaw7131 Exactly. I live in southern AZ so it's really quite dry here. Its hard for me to have the humidity I want, BUT on the other hand it's inclined against fungal issues and mold. The DID have incredibly bad spider mites last year in my outdoor garden because it was just soooo dry and hot - conditions they thrive in. If its not one thing, its another! and yeah, live and learn, it's the only way. It's how we become experts in the horrible things haha.
This video is so informative, thank you!! (I recently started keeping my Hoyas in an Ikea greenhouse cabinet with lights, fans, humidifiers, etc. so I'm paranoid about fungal infections.)
I also had to deal with a tramatic fungal infection a few months ago! thanks for putting this info out there! when I had my fungal issue there wasn't much info I could find on the process. but I ended up doing a very similar treatment/process as you. now I have a lottttttt of fans all around my plant collection 😂
Question: If putting the physan in the soil, I worry about it killing bacteria. Healthy soil has beneficial bacteria, as we know. Is it worth basically sterilizing the soil?
You're absolutely correct. Physan might kill helpful bacteria and fungus too. Just like when some of us decided to use systemic pest control, it might kill beneficial insects such as bees too. So it really come down to weighing the pros and cons. In my situation, I decided to use Physan20 because I must control the fungal infection or my plant would die. I will then repot my plants with new soil and add mycorrhizae to populate the beneficial bacteria and fungus again.
i have a cv joy which is kinda rare to find in my area and i suspect it started to get infected from another hoya nxt to it.. problem is my cv joy got only one leaf...should i just throw it away ???? :,(
If I removed all the diseased leaves, there will be no leaves because there was only 1 leaf when I bought it. Will it grow with just a stem & a piece of green tendril? It’s a Hoya Vitellinoides.
Thanks for the info. Can fungal infections happen even when the humidity isn't that high? I have some mystery problem plants that I can't quite figure out. Also, not hoya related, but I LOVE your haircut!! It looks super cute and fresh!!
It could. At least in my experience, the #1 cause of fungal infection is lack of airflow. I would look into it if your humidity is over 50% or 60% and if you're using organic material as your medium. And thank you!! 😊
Finally somebody start make video about fungal infection. Thank you. 🙏 Zlata Florida
13:00 repot

Love your new look.

Thank you Amanda. That was very informative. 👍

Thank you! Yea I waited for over a year for a haircut haha
Good day, what beautiful flowers, I love hoya
Thank you!!
Great info ! Do you think the application of fungicide would also harm the plants ? Thanks.

wow great video. I see a ton of people with closed growing spaces, I hope a lot of others aren't going to end up with same experience!

Right?? We all have our own challenges. The most important thing is we learn from our experiences 😁
Great Video!
Thank you!
This video is so informative, thank you!! (I recently started keeping my Hoyas in an Ikea greenhouse cabinet with lights, fans, humidifiers, etc. so I'm paranoid about fungal infections.)
Yea it's challenging for indoor growers to maintain a high humidity and good airflow at the same time. Gotta watch out for that. 😅
Underneath the leaf suggests downy mildew.

Ahhhh!! I'm so sorry that happened to you!! It's THE WORST!! I'm glad your plants are doing fine now. 😅 And yes! FANS!!!! 🌿🤣👍

I would try to treat it with fungicide first. If only part of the leaves have black spots, try cutting just that part.
new phobia unlocked!! thanks A LOT XDDDD oh gaaawd... I think I have on few of my anthuriums. I mean I'm pretty sure now -_-' good info tho
If I removed all the diseased leaves, there will be no leaves because there was only 1 leaf when I bought it. Will it grow with just a stem & a piece of green tendril? It’s a Hoya Vitellinoides.
If the roots system are healthy and the plant recovers, it'll grow back.
Maybe your Hoya Lockii did not feel good so it's trying to flower to spread its seeds etc?
May be... may be. 🤔

Very informative video. But leave your hair and glasses alone.
