I am trying to use the Nova II chips.64- 9.5 hp Johnson sea horse. I have 3 leads coming off my coils. I think one is ground and the other 2 went to the condensor and points. there is the stop switch in there too. do you have any info or ideas on this. I don't know what to do with them. do I tie those 2 together and put them on the positive side of the Chip? what about the stop button? thanks for all of the helpful videos. your a life saver. and you have motivated me to fix my outboard that I kept from when I was a kid in the 80's
I got the same motor mines running about 60psi for each cylinder as well I feel like that’s a good number for these motors?
Hello. I signed up for youtude just to ask you this question? That was almost as frustrating as the problem Im having.LOL I have a 9.5 johnson and it runs pretty decent until I put the cowl on? Like its being choked out or exhaust fumes are killing it?? Have you ran across this? Any thoughts? Was hoping you or someone could point me in the right direction. Your videos are very helpful and make sense to me. Thank You
Check the rubber exhaust boot for exhaust leak. You probably need a new one

Do you have any videos or know anywhere that shows how to put it all back together? I broke my ‘64 9.5 down to this point and replaced a bad spark plug wire and now I’m not sure how to get it all lined back up and put back together correctly.
Just the ignition?
Its same same as the ignition system as my recently completed 10 HP
Never thought to use a drill on mine to do a compression check.Would you be able, if you get an engine with bad rods or bad main bearings running to video that.Would like to hear it.thanks
Next time I come across one sure.
It sounds like a rattle; the more common type of failure I find is the wrist pin bearings or bushing.
This allows the rod to rock back and forth just a hair, causing a racket.
If you hear any knocking in a powerhead, there is a problem.
Thanks-I bought an 1985 johnson 20hp last year and after going from a 1988' 9.9hp the engine sounds alittle different of course.At full throttle I am not sure on the 20hp if I have a very slight rattle or it is just how the engine sounds?I do not really hear a knocking.I would have to compare it to another similar one.Never know what you get with used ones?Like no gear oil in the lower unit when I got it home.Should of checked it first.Seems to be working so far.
Does the stop switch kill both sparks? I have one firing and one is not.
Yes it does.
Check the coil/points on that dead cylinder.

I have this motor, but my spark plugs are both the same part # champion j4c, but the bottom cylinder spark plug has a bigger thread. Not sure if someone put some type of insert in it or what.

I used a harmonic balancer puller from AutoZone. I got the bolts and washers from the hardware store
