the highest pitch i found for my 15 hp evinrude 1984 is a 9.25x12 pitch ( the standard one was 9.5x10 )...i hope its going to be pitched enough for my light weight kaboat at 128 pound...what do you think?
25hp evinrude rated power 4500-5500 35hp evinrude 5000 - 5800.
All depends on your RPS your turning 😊
Micheal to RMD what's the biggest prop like can you put 19 pitch or not
could those fit on a 15 hp 1982 evinrude?
Great info
Very helpful
Michael could you pull Skieer on that 25 HP outboard I was just wondering
not anything over 30 lbs. Thanks for watching
I have to know where that shirt came from! Looks like our old Mercruiser Tri Sonic that we had when I was a kid!
I've always used 14 pitch props on the jon boats I've owned. Seemed to give the best all around performance. The only reason to me to go with a lower pitch is if the load is always going to be heavy (2-3 people, more gear, etc) in relation to the size of the boat. But if it's going to be most times a reasonably light load, use a 14. Then set the pin to the 2nd from bottom level and leave it there. If you go 3rd it'll cavitate more and bow-hop. Go to the 1st, it'll bow-dig and exhibit heavier steering.
In theory, "all boats are different"...but my entire life I've owned 14 to 16 foot "Mississippi River fishing boats" and each one always seemed to perform best (or rather most consistently) with a 14.
thanks for watching
On last comment it was down stream from dam with 4 gates open. A cross the lake 21.3 mph 10.3x12 pitch. I put a tachometer on board trim set at hole 2. Just ordered a solas Amita 10.8" x 10p hopefully it will reach 5500 rpm and run out near 25mph +- across the lake.
My 1542 trapper topper with 1989 25hp evinrude and solas 10.3" 12 pitch hit 24.8 mph down rivers with two aboard 370 lbs of people and 100 lbs gas and battery. Plus anchor and tackle and open live well. Plenty of punch out of the hole.
Thanks for the demo !!!! Excellent !!!!!!
i got a 25 hp merc and i got it on a 20 foot pontoon and i just changed my prop from a 13 to a 11 because of weight i think the 11 would do better not sure winter time again dang nice videos you do thanks
Thanks for posting this. I was thinking about changing the pitch on my Jon boat but now seeing that it doesn't change much ill just leave it be.
Thanks for the video. In my experience with these types of boats the single most important thing you can do for speed is get your setup as light as possible. I’m running an empty (except for required equipment) 14ft aluminum with a 1974 25hp Johnson, 9.3x11 solas prop and I’m 170lbs. I run it on the second trim hole from the bottom and run 29mph. Although I guess we have to take these speed apps with a grain of salt 🤷♂️
Thanks for sharing your information and thanks for watching
Have you tried a 4 blade made a world of difference on my skiff
My solas 10.3 x 12 p 25 evinrude outboard was Turing 4500 rpm. I upgraded to a Solas 10.8 x 10p now it's higher into the power band at 5350rpm increased top end in flat water from 21mph to 23 mph. The engine run so much quicker and quieter.
Quieter at a higher rpm?
Great video, Michael. Yep, about 300rpm with every shift in pitch (2-degree). When you have your goatee grown out, your dark glasses on, a hawaiian shirt on, and your hair is blown up and back by the wind, you look like you ought to be bending a reed on an alto saxophone in a blues band about 11pm in St. Louis. Totally cool look, "Big Daddy"!
That's awesome, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Fun video for sure but the only way to optimize any prop selection is to monitor top RPMs against the engine's manufacturer specs. Proper prop selection is no science, it's an art !!! There are so many variables to consider (hull displacement, total wheight hauled, optimal transom height, etc), when you think you got smart, how about switching down to a 2 blades prop ... or moving up to a 4 blades and then how about a plastic, aluminum or stainless prop. Trust me, after fiddling with outboards for about 50 years, the number of alternatives are mind boggling ! Keep safe and be merry my dear sir !
you are so correct, thanks for watching
What app are you using for you mph? Thankyou for you videos, I watch them all. I have an evinrude 1984 35 hp.
Just called "speedometer" in the apple app store
👍👍👍 Great video on Comparing pitches. I run the 13 pitch on my 25hp Johnson river boat. 👍👍👍As always Sir thanks for the ride along and Keep’em coming.
If I had to chose one it would be the 13 pitch especially if I had a third person in the boat. thanks for watching
I would try a 9 pitch or 10 pitch in yoir case
Nice video good information. How was the gear oil? Did you guys get a chance to do any fishing?
Thanks
Tim
Still need to check the gear oil and I didn't do any fishing. Thanks for watching
Lovin your content. Simple easy to follow. Great information. from Syd Australia
Awesome, thank you!
Very cool information, really got to see the difference in props ! Often wondered how size reacts to a engine 😬👍
Thanks for watching!
Yes found it very useful.
Thought max rpm is 5500 on these.?
it's a range from 4500 to 5500
How high is the cavitation plate from the bottom of the boat?
about 1 inch below the bottom, thanks for watching
What lake are you at??
Mahalo for sharing your observations and wisdom
you are welcome, thanks for watching
Thanks for posting a video today.
You bet, thanks for watching
Your going to need a faster drone
LOL, eventually I will, thanks for watching
You should use the lowest pitch that won’t allow you to go past max rpm, with one person, trimmed up.
I ran a large service department at a marine dealership. We propped every boat that we worked on that way.
Run the 11 pitch in hot weather.
What's the reasoning behind that?
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina
In hot weather you loose some rpm
On top end. Same goes for high humidity.
Do a measured fuel burn on the 13, 15.
Not on this outboard this go round, thanks for watching
