    quick tip i work on farm equipment and rusty electric motors and pumps, the key to getting bolts to break loose with minimal effort is to tap them with a flat punch and hammer and the vibration breaks them free. also zep45 helps alot too if you can get your hands on it

    Any advice to remove a stuck driveshaft in my 64 9.5
    I removed my lower gear case and the copper tube came with the lowercase and the drive shaft stayed in the power head
    And I have another drive shaft from another lower unit I just need this out and pb and whacking on it won’t help

    I did a water pump replacement on my 1965 Johnson sea horse 9.5 fallowing your video I have rebuild over 6 Mercury and Mercury Mariner out boards no issues but newer motors not the older models I can’t get into reverse now saw someone drop the shift lever into natural before dropping lower unit to get to shift lever undone no issues taking it apart and seemed to go together pretty easily but won’t go up to reverse just natural and forward any ideas? Thanks for your posting your video

    So you like those turtle tops ? Not to bad of a motor but usually there low compression ( don’t think I’ve ever seen one over 80 PSI ) but the sell very well ! Do you belong to the AOMCI club ? If so do you go to any of our meets like tomahawk or Constantine ? Great place for parts and knowledge !

    @ around 8 minutes in you spoke about replacing 1 of the 6 flathead screws. I was wondering where I can order some. (I’m sure what the proper name for them)
    Thanks

      It’s actually @ 7 minutes 45 seconds and maybe they would be called gearcase screws

    Hey Brandon I just bought a 73 Johnson 9.5 with tank and hose for $40.00 Looks great starts and idles good 2 questions 1st question Tiller is really stiff and won't throttle all the way up 2nd shifted into forward 1st time I started it in a barrel worked perfect,went to neutral and now it wont shift shifting lever has good snap and stays in position.I don't want to break any seals because right now the lower unit is sealed and doesn't leak and a seal kit where I live is $65.00 Don't want to pull the flywheel either any Ideas for a short cut By the way I am a subscriber and think your videos are the best Thanks

  • @danielgutuescu5321
    @danielgutuescu5321 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brandon, I assume that before you removed the 4 bolts holding the lower unit on, you first removed the nut on top of the engine holding the drive shaft? Is that a step we can see somewhere else? Is removing the long shaft having any effect on the magneto assembly?

    • @danielgutuescu5321
      @danielgutuescu5321 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry, the shaft does not go all the way to the flywheel.

    You mentioned the water tube was trying to come out when pulling off the lower unit. Mine did. I can't find a way to fish it back up into the powerhead. Any ideas how to replace it short of pulling the powerhead? I also watched the rest of your vids on the tear down. Thanks for those. Any steps I can skip if I do have to dissect to the powerhead. Thanks.

    Brandon, I have the 9r-72M version of this motor and she's slipping out of forward gear under load. I've taken the gear box apart and the gears and clutch dog, and drive gear on the shaft from the motor all look good (no worn engagement surfaces). Could the slippage be a shifter adjustment? Anything else to check?

    • @michaelcyr8215

      never mind.. i think i figured it out. rubber hub in prop slipping under load.

    Hi Brandon, a quick question thanks. Is it normal for the driveshaft of these 9.5hp motors to move up freely from the lower unit lower leg once the impeller housing is off?

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe so

    • @nickmav682
      @nickmav682 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonsGarage Thanks as I knew in the smaller ones like the 4hp it comes out easily and you need to be careful as it is hard to realign it with the pinion but I was surprised it is the same with this 9.5hp. It slided up freely but I just pushed it straight back down :)

      Don't even need to change oil really.
      How do the fuel lines look? old/original 'ribbed' lines?

      But an OEM kit, not an aftermarket and you should be fine.

      @BrandonsGarage haven't even tried. my dad gave me the boat he said reverse doesn't work but I took the lower unit off, Did what you said. and it shifted forward neutral and reverse. But that's while I had the engine off. I had nothing but a small amount of water in my gear housing. I'm going to replace the impeller and fill it with gear oil and see how it goes

      Did you seal the pump base (metal plate) to the bearing hosing?
      Then did you seal the housing to the base?
      If yes, hook the drive shaft up to a drill, and stick it in a bucket of water - see if it pumps.
