    I took delivery of a LR MY with the standard 19” Gemini wheels on Halloween of 2021. I was concerned about everything I had heard about ride and build quality. I have 14,500 miles on it now and I’m happy to report I have had zero issues with build quality and find the ride quality comfortable and quiet. It seems the quality of the newer models are much better. This is by far the best car I’ve ever owned. Don’t let negative comments dissuade you from considering this car.

      I too purchased a Model Y in Oct of 2021 with a 2019 Model 3 trade in. The Model Y build quality was much better. I could find no body defects even after my super perfectionist son-in-law looked at the car for a long time. The new Teslas just keep getting better.

    Ryan -thanks for another great review! I must agree with you 100% on ride quality. I now drive a 2022 MY, but previously owned a 2021 standard range MY and a 2019 long range M3. Getting those smaller wheels really helps!

    Got my LR MY in mid 2020. Vin number is in 9000s. Only adjustment done thru the mobile service was the frunk alignment. No issues since then. Now the car has 27K miles with many multi-states trips. Auto pilot/FSD beta really makes long road trip stress free. Best car I ever have (had Acura, BMW and Lexus ES Hybrid before).

    Totally agree, Ryan, about the Model Y being the best SUV type I've had. My delivery of a 2022 LR car was easy and quick. They cleaned a small dirt spot on the interior right there, no service call needed. The careful walk around turned up no exterior and only one minor interior problem for which I'm still awaiting mobile service. The mobile service has been delayed 3 times due to parts being unavailable but eventually they'll get it done. Ride is still choppy but then my old Prius is just as bad and the roads I drive are not all smooth freeways. We have a road trip coming up and it will be a good test of AP and FSD subscription. Charging will be easy except for our usual route through the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. We may be able to use a charge point station or we may re-route through Gallup, we'll see. Thanks and drive safely.

    @musicbysv_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Excellent review Ryan. Thanks for sharing.
    After two years (VIN is sub-600), I would buy another Tesla (probably a MS), but not likely the Model Y.
    *The ride is TOO stiff. (I’m swapping out the 20” wheels for TSportline 19” wheels next week. 🤞🏻 )
    * FSD and Autopilot is not safe enough for prime time. My passengers are genuinely scared at some point in every ride that FSD is used. Autopilot, is great 90% of the time, and I use it daily. That remaining 10% is terrifying for passengers.
    * I want a display in front of the driver, and I want more tactile knobs.
    * I desperately wish they’d add CarPlay support; or at least my primary apps used when I drive (PocketCasts, Amazon Music, TH-cam Music).
    That said, I love driving the MY. I love one-foot driving. I love the legroom and comfort (as long as it’s not moving). I love the storage space. I love never filling up a gas tank. I generally like the on-screen UI.

  • @Bilbospil
    @Bilbospil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Your review was great, however I would add the blind spot mirror system to be right behind the ride quality as the top two issues. Commonly used bsm mirrors used on many ice cars work so much better than looking at the camera view on the screen. I really wish there was a third party replacement available for this. Like many people, I would gladly purchase them.

    Just took delivery of a May 22 build Model Y with 20" wheels. Leased our model 3 in March '21 and loved it so much ordered Y in September for spouse. Midnight Silver on White with tow hitch and upgraded wheels. I find car's ride firm but very comfortable. Tight as a drum. Smooth and fast as a bullet train. I'm coming from 3 series BMW with sport package and Jag F type (sport) and Mini Cooper S (sport) so I was def not hoping for a luxo boat ride but also didn't want jarring banging ride in car which is destined to be our long term road trip vehicle. Very pleased. Storage epic compared to M3. Extra range going to be very handy on So Cal trip to midwest this summer.

    I’m at 30K on my MYLR. Having turned down the one that was offered to me the week before you got yours, I got one from the first week after Fremont reopened. The worst problem I’ve had was a auto park backing into my garage and scraping the side mirror and the front driver fender flare. Luckily, I had PPF, so no underlying problem to the paint. We’ve taken it from Atlanta to Lake Superior (2500+/- miles) and Washington DC (2000K +/-). No problems on either trip. This week we’re headed out to the Grand Canyon then Yellowstone, then Mt. Rushmore (6000+/- miles). Hope our luck lasts!

Would you please make a video on all of these voice commands? It's not that hard to do and keeps the driver "heads up"

    Excellent, thanks for all the honest assessment. When I can EVENTUALLY get my Model Y in Australian form, I might change over the tyres first to maybe 18’s as I have no need have high performance driving capabilities. My current heavy station wagon is fast and powerful on 16” tyres and drives as hard as I need. So 18’s would be even better but softer than 19” tyres. And I have a friend who designs and builds suspension kits for race cars. So I’ll get him to make me a very comfortable set of springs!

    Good point about full charged regen, LFP VS NCA, I assume "strange" regen characteristics will be more common on LFP since people will top them off more commonly?
    Possible this has been tested or documented anywhere to better understand the characteristics?

My main complaint is range full charge is good for 189 to 191 this is consistent on long trips or in town. Service dept said that is the norm for long range. Curious if you feel that is incorrect. my Y will do 1-1 (miles to battery miles) at about 65MPH. however it drops off quickly doing 78 MPH will cost 140 battery miles per 100 miles. thus 200 miles will cost 280 battery miles, with the LR model is 326 miles.

    You video so spot on. I got mine in October 2020. Other than a misalignment issue, I didn’t find any other issues.
    I live in apartment and I don’t have any charging stations at the place. So I use the superchargers or I charge at chargepoint when I’m shopping. So this inconvenience and the prices going for used car, I thought of selling my Model Y and getting an luxury ICE car. Keeping the rising gas prices aside none of the ICE has features comparable to Y. Even for the things that comes as standard for Y, I have pay extra for the same in an ICE car and the prices shoots up if I included those. That is keeping me away from buying ICE cars.
    Supercharger is another thing That is keeping me way from selling this and buying another EV. The charging prices are high other EVs. Which would cost somewhat similar to riding a gas car.

The sport wheels it’s better but still bad. I don’t have a tesla but am looking to get one soon. I like the model Y because I like crossover SUVs but the right quality is the biggest deciding factor for me.

    It's pretty funny that a lot of the comments on your Model Y review are from owners of a Model Y. Shows you how obsessed we are with our cars! :) (Written by yet another owner of a Model Y and a Model 3) A few points I'll add:
    1. The blind spot monitor should have an indicator on the mirrors themselves. This is a pretty major missing feature and seems like it would be an easy fix.
    2. The lack of Apple Car Play or Android Auto isn't as big of a deal as I thought it would be (but I still wish it was an option).
    3. Most of the QC issues I found on mine were nitpicky and I likely wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't looking for them because of the reputation of Tesla (I later found that my Toyota had similar minor fit and finish issues when I went looking for them).
    4. I'm tall, 6 foot 4, and find the car extremely comfortable. It's much better than my model 3 (which my wife took over as a result).

    Hey Ryan- we need you to do a video on the recent development regarding the Model 3 and deliveries showing up in the last couple of days with the older style headlights in place of the newer matrix style! A bunch of people are reporting M3s arriving without warning regarding the negative feature change and without many even realizing it until too late. . . Need to get the word out to put the pressure on Tesla to reverse this decision,or at least give us a fair heads up about it for those of us who are about to take delivery and were expecting the feature. Way bigger deal IMO then the loss of the included mobile charger . . .thanks!

    I don’t like how late the AP breaks sometimes - it’s a lot more harsh than I am, but then it never misses cars slowing down either…
    I have heard that most of the sound engineers at Tesla are from Bose & B&O.

    • @omanyaki402
      @omanyaki402 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ditto on autopilot breaking - sometimes so late it’s jarring and scary…oh but then once it senses it’s ok to move again, noticed this more since the latest update, it starts like it wants to take off - not subtle at all, then slows down and basically creeps along almost as if it’s making sure there’s nothing in front and then slowly ramps up speed. The last minute stoping is dangerous because the driver behind you has little to no warning especially if they’re the dumb smhuck who like to tailgate…the slow creeping to continue the follow is also dumb as it leaves the drivers around you wondering what the heck you’re doing - another safety issue.

    We took delivery of our 2020 LR AWD Y on July 28th, 2020, and currently have 19K+ miles. It's been a great vehicle. We did add the Performance Boost for $2K. We paid $52,190 back then and were just offered $56,540 from CARVANA. We are thinking of taking the deal and ordering a 2020 Performance Model Y. Our Y has been BULLETPROOF. We are 70 years old and don't find the ride to be too harsh, but I find running the tire PSI at 38 psi COLD for routine daily driving which softens the ride a bit, then pump them UP to 44 PSI COLD for road trips. But taking long road trips I wouldn't want to try that on any other charging network. We use AP exactly as you do, it's a great driver assistance tool as long as you follow common sense and don't expect it to be more than it is. My lifetime efficiency as it sits is 267 wh/mi. We love the audio system as well.

    I took delivery of a '21 long range Model 3 late June last year (2021) and it has been to the Service Cebter countless times. All minor things, but as Ryan pointed out, really unacceptable for a car at this price point. Worse than the issues is that the service centers in my experience have been largely bad and just give shoulder shrugs with some of the issues I have that remain unresolved. Maybe I'm a nitpicker, but for what we pay for these cars I believe it's warranted. I can say with confidence if I bought an Audi, BMW, etc. many/most of these issues would not be present in those cars.
    On the positive, the lack of quality build control not withstanding the ride is definitely smooth and pleasant. Like Ryan, I feel like I might have gotten a quasi-lemon Tesla but gun to my head I would buy another one when the time comes. Service centers need to really up the accountability game though - every single time resolved issues required more than one visit and a couple of mine remain unresolved after already multiple visits.

    2:50 - Regarding the Hold feature, I originally learned to drive (like 1976 😳) on manual-transmission in a flat-terrain town. So, I originally learned to bring the car to a stop with the brake pedal, then take my foot off the pedals entirely while waiting at a red light. That’s essentially what the hold mode does, does, so I wish I had that option.

    Beware 2. Asked Tesla to clarify how anyone stands if they modify the suspension or, fit after-market suspension, to try to reduce the suspension & road noise harshness. They confirmed that the Tesla warranty would be voided.

    • @rogersmj
      @rogersmj ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it won’t. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to arbitrarily void your warranty just because you modify something on your car. To deny a warranty claim, the company would have to prove (as in, in court) that the modification was directly responsible for the problem you’re claiming under warranty. The burden of proof is on the manufacturer.

    Great post - the lack of radar sensors in my experience, makes using the autopilot feature scary. The cameras - for me always the right camera more than the others - are always complaining. For this price range and front visibility issues, not having a front camera, simply put, is cheap and ridiculous. I’ve added a front camera and parking is now 1000% better and SAFER. I agree with your statements regarding the music search. On pickup I found 8 issues within first 100 days. I took it in as scheduled and they basically did nothing - including the right camera - they told me they use a 3rd party partner for paint and they’d schedule another service with the partner -5 months later I’m still driving the car with the Tesla sticky tags pointing to the issues - no reschedule and no word. Frankly I’m just gonna forget about this and move on - again for the price this is ridiculous. In general I like the car. Not having to pay for gas anymore is the biggest win for me. I’ve added other stuff here and there to make the car more for my liking, some at significant at costs, that most would say the car should’ve come with in the first place.

    I'm curious, how often do you pull up to a charging station and there is not one available? With gas, it takes so little time to fill up but if you get to an EV charging station at the same time as multiple people and all of you require 30-40 minutes of charge time, you just added their charge time to yours so stopping to charge is gonna suck. Also, how often do people leave their cars plugged in after it's done charging? If someone goes to the mall and plugs in and spends 2 hours inside the mall, that charging station is tied up till they decide to come back.

  • @fr9714
    @fr9714 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not too far off from your delivery of Mar 2020 and I'm quite in agreement with your review. My views on those 10points
    1. driving experience - really great. SUV but has amazing feel/response and acceleration. Doesn't feel sluggish nor do you get rollover/tipping feel at all even at 90+mph. Smooth. Only thing is I prefer coasting of ICE over regen.
    2. AP - worth it for Interstate driving. Did this 3x across multiple-states (min 3). Don't use it normally as I prefer driving myself even in traffic as I love driving. AP has issues though. Rain/night with a lone car with headlights and AP is blinded or with sun and it's over. We're nowhere near FSD tbh.
    3. Ride Quality - agree. Stiff and bumpy but ok. Not as smooth as Model 3.
    4. Storage - a bit poor. You'll struggle after 2 large suitcases. 90% of time trunk won't close as something bumps. The extra storage is nice but overall the back slope limits storage drastically
    5. Sound system - when still; amazing, when moving; meh. I'm not an audiophile (99.9% can't tell diff anyways) but it is just ok overall. At 70mph road noise is a lot. Cell phones are useless via BT is useless as noise is so low unless you make vol near 80%+ so just put cell speaker. No issue with Spotify but issue with Streaming podcasts (SYSK - most podcasts here don't load). Searching is idiotic.
    6. Software - good initially but the latest UI/UX change is IDIOTIC and made by idiot not-programmers. I can code better than this crap. So much wasted white space, buried menus, idiotic design change - can't change seat heats on the pic but can do it for rear seats which used to be there. Not to mention the useful swipes left or right are gone etc. Someone really stupid took charge of Tesla software and this will really hurt them in the long run
    7. Tesla App - much better but still buggy. Initially I had to click my cell phone and futz around till it connects. Some update fixed it. Today it now includes useful features like remote sentry cam, climate controls, charge stats, service. However that same UI/UX idiot probably was in this team briefly because Defrost is hidden till you find an accidental upward swipe to get to it. Moron.
    8. Issues/Service - definitely build quality is not up to mark. Squeaks abound. I just ignored it. My 2 decade old BMW is so much superior in all these. Service call itself was good. But they canceled my scratches ticket saying just go somewhere else. I just threw some paint on those scratches. Paint quality is sub par. Windshield quality subpar. Driver mirror shakes at 75mph+
    9. Safety - safe. Car handles well and you just have be careful
    10. Range/Charging - Range is good and I'm getting near 316mi as stated as long as you don't launch, speed like crazy, accelerate from 50-70 constantly or go fast. After 2 years, I'm still getting around 316mi to 330mi even depending on climate and driving style. Winter - range loss is around 30% less with heater on, without about only 5% less. Superchargers are amazing tbh. No issues at all.
    Overall I'm glad I replaced my Acura SUV with Tesla. There's no way it's pathetic 14mpg could match the efficiency of a Tesla and I've already saved $2200 in gas charges already in 2 years. Not to mention the $5,000 state EV incentive rebate and Y is already $7200 saved on its $55k purchase price which brings it to below Acura cost. Overall, there was no real competitor to Tesla then. Today, maybe I would give Ford Mustang MachE or Rivian or Lucid or VW a chance (not GM or Toyota or anyone else)

    • @fr9714
      @fr9714 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Few other points not mentioned
      1. Glass roof - gets VERY hot in summer. I bought a Tasmanian $70 porous mat to reduce the microwave effect inside car. I feel this is not so with my 3 but only with Y. Poor build again
      2. Some features of software are annoying like can't have Auto without AC/Heat like in every other car
      3. Frosting in winter is a HUGE issue and you have to be VERY careful with the glass which moves up and down when you open/close the door. If the window is stuck and you open and close the door the glass moves and stays OVER the chrome/non-chrome of 3/Y and can damage the window to the point where it will start to squeak always as it lost mm to cm of alignment
      Idiotic design imo. So you have to PREHEAT the car and defrost for 1hr min (at 20F weather outside when things "stick", esp early morning or risk damage)
