Tesla model Y Review
Tesla Model 3 Review - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
"Time to charge" is such a non-issue, even on road trips. Then again, I don't mind a 10-20 break to get a sandwich or pee every few hours. And at home, it's easier than going to a gas station. It's strange passing all the gas stations and oil change places thinking, huh, I have no use for that anymore...an odd feeling.
Yeah, it's also an odd feeling when people talk about the price of gas, and you're thinking "what is the price of gas these days...shouldn't I know that?"
Charging is a huge issue for all EVs. Remember that most people in large cities live in condos/high rises, which means no home charging. Most people are not willing to wait 45 minutes to charge, especially if they have to wait in line at a charging station, and pay 39 cents/kWh which isn't very cheap compare to gasoline. The fact the cars cost so much more and these big inconvenience makes buying an EV a big no-way for most people right now.
Every road trip I have ever been on would have been ruined with that much charging, drove 400 miles 1 stop a few weeks ago, twice in 24 hours
Most new apartments have charging. But I also live in CA so maybe it's not common other places. I've also worked for multiple companies some outside if CA and they all offered charging as well.
I still find myself going to gas stations for the convience store aspect.
This. This. This is how to make a vehicle review video. Efficiently narrated, quick, clear conversational tone with multiple camera angles, zoom-ins and cutaways. Not just a camera stuck on a tripod (too far away) for painfully long periods of narration (like Out-Of-Spec Reviews). WELL DONE, RYAN. KEEP IT UP! Thank you :)
please, run down and see if i parked correctly, ta

Ryan, this was another super thorough and informative episode, but I was surprised by a couple of your comments. First, my experience with voice commands has been very different, especially with music searches. It finds the songs I'm requesting more than 90% of the time and I love it, even super obscure things like, "Play the theme song from Petticoat Junction." :-) Same with temp controls. Instead of saying "Change temperature to..." try saying, "Set temperature to..." You can also say "Increase" or "Decrease temperature." and it will move up or down by 3 degrees each time. Same with fan speed. Works every time for me. I just wanted to share my experience, even though you and others may not get the same results. I'd also like to mention that we got our Model Y in the first year of production (Nov 2020) and we have not had a single squeak or rattle in 3 years of ownership. We've covered 36,000 miles and it is still rock solid and completely quiet. Again, I understand that you and others have had some issues, but it is not fair to say that everyone will. That said, I still believe you have one of the best EV channels on TH-cam, and I thank you for the fine work you are doing to educate the public on EV ownership. Keep up the good work, my friend.
2021 DM Y owner here. 44k miles and the only issue has been a loose rear view mirror. Maintenance has consisted of new tires at 31k miles and changing out the cabin air filters. Zero squeaks or rattles on our VIN. We are probably going to sell once the Juniper refreshed Y goes on sale. Great vehicle!
with the wipers, when you tap on the button, you can use the left scroll wheel to adjust the speed of the wipers by pushing right or left. there are tiny little arrows that pop up on the card indicating that you can do that
That’s awesome thanks for the tip

Not any criticism on removing the stalks???
This obvious stupidity from Tesla is a nightmare and will be a DEALBREAKER for the future Model 3/Y!
I agree, but it will come after market then. Tesla hasn't removed them on the new updated Y, so it's still good.
@@hqsound5582 Right, but I fear they’ll do it to Model Y (Juniper) as well.
Don’t underestimate the small storage in the front. I have my mobile charger, air pump, an extension cord, a small tool kit and the pucks for lifting the car as well as a 30 amp adapter cord for my mobile charger. these all fit in that small front under storage and is very helpful
I have just about the same kit in mine, plus a tow strap.
Always put takeout in there so rest of your car doesn't smell like takeout
I use mine for groceries and take out.
The Tesla 32a adapter is so handy, and cheap too!
I work at alot of music events and TV studios where you are never far from 32amp outlets 🙌⚡️
Best review of an electric car I’ve ever watched, and I seen *tons* of them in the past three years! Kudos. Your production work is second to none, in my opinion.
Biggest pet peeves on 2023 Y:
- windshield wipers (auto)
- cupholders (size of 🍼 with no support for different sizes)
Besides that it's an awesome car, literally like 1/8 of gas prices (charging at home) with near zero maintenance. 👍
what about the lack of sensors for parking etc.. I heard horrible things about tesla vision replacment.
@@charlestwoo , luckily haven't had a problem with that.
Ryan,
Thanks as always for putting out a great video with thoughtful commentary!
The right stalk actually was taken from Mercedes which use the same way of changing gear. The left stalk way of changing indicators was there with some German brands as well.
My 2023 Model Y I do a quick "open glove box" and boom it opens as fast as you can command it. The voice commands have really been improved.
Thanks for the walk through. I really appreciate it
15:11
In case of auto wiper doesn’t do the job..
If you engage wipers with the left stalk button, you can switch through wiper modes (which pops up in the bottom of the screen) with the left button on the steering wheel, by switching left or right (like switching audio tracks).
Pretty intuitive!
You still only have 4 different levels, unlike most cars where you have 4-5 "low" speed settings before the 3 constant speeds.
But that update was a huge improvement
Great comment ty
Ryan. Your videos are just getting better and better. I dont recall seeing a better review. I've a model 3 but cant get my head around the lack of stalks on the new model. I'll wait and see what happens to the model y update, but will take some convincing on the stalks. Yes, other cars may be built better, but Tesla is king with teh charge network.
2021 MYP - I have had some issue with mine but I still absolutely love it. Issues I experienced so far include: charge port locking mechanism need to be replaced, battery replacement, hazing on windshield on front cameras (removing the cover and cleaning with a cloth fixed the issue) and recently safety restraint error (code RCM2_a495) which I have a appointment to get that fixed soon.
I rented a Model Y for my last vacation to see what it's like. The technology worked well, though there was some phantom braking, as well as times when it felt like ventilated seats would be nice to have. It basically confirmed my plan to wait for the Juniper Model Y.
Most people investing who are not in Tesla don’t realize that Tesla is the next oil company. With other companies in USA changing to their superior network means printing money in a few years time. Much better business model than making the car itself. Not even mentioned the Tbot.
Love your videos! Super informative and I watched a ton of them before I finally ordered my MYLR. I have to say it's probably my most favourite car I've ever owned!
Great Job, this will likely be the video I will point to if my friends or family want to learn the basics. There is actually quite a bit to learn and understand when transitioning to a Tesla, Ryan does a great job demonstrating and explaining. I love my model Y.
At 4:24 I agree with you that the 19 inch rims with rim covers is the best choice for range and comfort. We test drove back to back between the 20 inch black rims and the 19 inch with rim covers, we like the ride comfort of the 19 inch better. And for the look, yes you are right everyone has the same covers, but we can also buy aftermarket rim covers for them now which come in graphite color and black color as well.
Thank you. I'm in COLD country and am waiting until Tesla insulates a bit better. Hopefully your concerns will have been addressed by then...but I'll be watching for them!!
I sold my Lexus RX hybrid SUV this spring and bought a Model Y LR, and love it!!! By far, it's the best car I've every owned. Buying one for my wife next year, to get the additional tax credit as her Volt is getting a little old now. We've been on a few long road trips and they were easy peasy. The Supercharger network is easy to use and almost everywhere, making road trips pretty simple. Around town driving is great and charging at home from my solar panels, is the best, $0 cost for fuel.
Even better in interior quality, road noise, suspension etc?
Really handy tip:
When watching Netflix, TH-cam, etc and you want to go to another app/car menu briefly then return to what you was watching... tap the screen and a little minimise button appears in the top left corner - tap it to make the app pause and shrink WITHOUT closing it down.
Took me months to find out!
Great episode Ryan, thank you!
OMG I've had my 2023 Y/LR 6+ months and I didn't know about that secondary back under-storage area. Thank you, Ryan!!
I found it by accident after a few months 😂
This is the best review of the Model Y I've seen. Good job!
Good refresher video and thanks 😊.
One hack I find useful for using the Model 3 and Model Y exterior door handles is to use your right hand to open the right side doors, and left hand for the left side doors. More Tesla logic.
You can use either, just turn your hand upside down.
Thanks Ryan, got to say I love my 2023 White Model Y AWD (with white seat option and tow hitch) (Fremont built as now in Canada these are the slightly less ranged China builds with LG batteries rather than the fast charging slightly longer range Panasonic Battery Fremont cars). I had a 2023 Ioniq 5 AWD long range Limited equivalent (the Canada model name is too long), but it was a dud, took 6 service visits and 7 month to finally fix the no DC Charging issue from new. I was worried I would miss the quietness and ride quality on the 2023 Tesla model Y, but really not that big a difference but the Tesla handles a lot better and as this is my road tripper, wow cannot contain my self on how easy it is to drive 800 miles + Vancouver to Calgary, AB or to Edson AB!
At 6:39 My wife's MY also has rattle noise when going over speed humps and uneven road surfaces. Took us one appointment to the service center to fix it. Well, one other improvement that have made is that there are now free coffee at the Service Center. The last appointment I had for my Model X was over a year ago and at that time, there was no free or paid coffee machine at all.
14:42
I use the voice command to open the glovebox. It’s pretty convenient.
great and practical review. appreciated!
Hey Out-Of-Spec Reviews, this is how to shoot a car review--multi-scene camera cuts, angles, close ups. Your camera person and/or editor seems quite unskilled, lazy or both. Thank you, Ryan for another excellent production! -MSPlaid owner
It would be nice to have the door handles back-lit to make them easier to find in a dark situation. Maybe activate when you walk up to it.
Excellent video, can you please share, what year is model Y what kind of battery you have, and the degradation on the battery so far and charging habits like home charing or super charging you have, also is this premium or partial audio. It would help the community alot Thank you
In my opinion the glove compartment is perfect the way it is, with no button for concealment. To open it you can use voice command “open glove compartment” works 95% of the time. Also with windshield wiper control. Turn them on with left stock button. Than use right steering wheel scroll button, toggle right to increase speed per click, and left to reduce wiper speed. When I found this out by accident, I love wiper operation now, not having to use the screen.
Thanks! this is one is was very well done and should help new or want to be owneers.
I enjoyed your video and really appreciate your soft spoken, informative, no music-hype approach. I have a Bolt EUV which I absolutely love and now, completely sold on EV’s I’m test during everything I can get my hands on and yes, considering a Tesla, primarily for its longer range. You’ve driven almost Everything and that’s why I see you as an expert consumer. I’m wanting to replace my Honda CRV Hybrid in the next few months. I’ve seen a lot of these teslas on the road but I’ve never driven one. I’m thinking of renting one through Turo, then maybe buying one through Carvana or leasing one through Tesla. It’s so funny that you mention the rattles…. My Bolt is smooth as silk and whisper quiet. It would really take a lot to impress me at this point especially at a significantly higher price but I’m looking at the Blazer EV and holding out for the Honda version Prologue. But again, you like the Tesla and I trust your opinion. I’ll just have to drive one to see for myself. Thanks for your videos!
The one thing that really would bother me is having to glance to the side to check my speed. Really wish they had a heads up display or a minimal dash for speed straight ahead.
It's really not bad at all once you drive the car. You won't even think about it since it is still decently close to your field of view.
People have made small and large center displays for this problem, theres a type for anyone. Large, Small, Hidden..
You do get used to having the speed display on the tablet display. I drove a Prius for 14 years and after about a week I got used to looking at the center of the dash for my speed. But I do use the cruise control a lot so I don't have to watch the speed as I prefer to put all my concentration on driving, not on watching the speed limit.
Check your speed??? People do that? J/K All jokes aside, it's actually very easy to get used to, no different than glancing over to your rearview mirror. I think it's better than looking down to a standard gauge cluster because your eyes move laterally allowing for better peripheral vision of the road (which in humans is much more acute from the sides as opposed to above and below our primary field of vision).
To others' point, have you tried it? It's a non-issue for everyone I know who drove a tesla for more than 1 hour.
Thanks for the honest review.
I leased the 2021 Model 3 LR and I love it. When the lease is up next year I plan on buying a Model Y LR as my 'forever' car (I'm 72). Hoping to extend my lease until the Juniper refresh/update is available.
That's a really smart plan! with hardware 4, you have the best chance that FSD will become level 3 or 4 someday
My situation *exactly,* except that I'm ten years older than you. My lease is up in March; and like you, I hope to extend my lease until Juniper is available.
Ryan, can you elaborate more on why you like the Y the most out of all 4 models in the Tesla lineup? I’ve driven all of them and I agree with you and own a MYP as well. Just curious to hear more from you on this.
Thanks for the video! One note: as others have said, I've found the voice input more useful. Try "navigate to Dunkin Donuts" sometime. The "navigate to" command is quite handy, and I find works very well.
Ryan, great audio! What wireless mics do you use? Thanks in advance.
Great review. Thank you.
Great review! I have a burning question. How reliable is the blindspot awareness? Does it often tell you there’s no car when there really is?
Glovebox - press left scroll wheel, say "open glovebox".
You're welcome.
Voice commands are great. Use them.
I've honestly sort of forgotten about tesla options. But since I am looking for a new car, preferably electric, and a wagon (we don't have to make up fancy non hatchback/wagon names) this seems like a really good option. It's actually more affordable than many comparable offerings.
i have a 2021 model y performance, with fsd. Im in love.
Hello! I was wondering if you could tell me your camera car set up? What mounts are you using to hold your cameras? Would greatly appreciate it.
Needs that updated interior that highland got, just looks so much better and from the sound of the reviews feels less cheap
Is the sensitivity of the rain sensing wipers adjustable like on other cars?
Realizing how often you use the features via the stocks on the steering wheel, it will be odd to activate all that via the new Highland stock-less steering wheel. I rented a Model Y from Hertz in Arizona recently, and I loved my 8 days with the vehicle!
I've had five Model 3s over the years and have had no rattles whatsoever. My 2022 Model S rear seatbelt bumps against the rear seat a bit(easy fix if it bothers you) but yeah no rattles on my Teslas.
Can you program the steering wheel button to fold the mirrors or us voice control? I live in the Cotswold UK where there are lots of narrow roads.
Hi Ryan. Any chance you would consider reviewing and test driving the Kia EV6, Nero, or EV5 when available? I've been hearing really great things about this brand but would respect your opinion regarding this line. Since I'm in western Canada, we'll probably still get a Tesla to overcome the range anxiety but still would love to get your thoughts. Thanks!
OMG! Thanks for the show and tell.
I just thought of a question for FSD: while using it, do you notice more of a battery usage? I only ask because since it sees more when the beta is enabled, I would assume it is using a bit more power.
Great video, but you left out phone key with user profiles, IMO two of the best Tesla conveniences that other brands still aren't delivering as capably or seamlessly.
Online calendar integration that auto navigates to my next appt is yet another convenience reviews never point out. Oh, and setting nav destination from mobile phone (share to Tesla app).
Also, no rattles yet on my Sept 2022 MYP, and voice commands work great for music, nav, and even Google searches which I use often esp on road trips.
Overall, I tell my friends my MYP not only arrived flawless and has remained so 13 months in, it's actually gotten better via updates, repeatedly.
While in autopilot on a freeway, will the car move over if a semi comes to close in an adjacent lane, or even starts to enter your lane?
This is very common on I5 in the PacNw. I drive a Subaru and shut off my cruise control with lane centering when passing a semi on a windy day.
No rattles but panel gaps taking multiple SC trips to more or less resolve. Also color matching problems with White.
The driving part where he was getting onto the freeway triggered some dmv driving test memories for me lol
I order my new model y last week, do these videos are really helpful Ryan. I believe (according to my VIN I have received in app) my car is 2024 from Shanghai, and this introduces Black Gemini wheels and hubs, new interior (not wood), ambient light strip on the dash, and reinstated parking sensors. Plus better performance. All of which are great updates!
are you sure parking sensors are back, cos I will order mine today if that's true. I heard really bad things about the 2023 vision only model.
Are you in the US?
It would be interesting to hear about the individual points you thought were better in other EVs.
There is not much better. Probably personal preference things.
I'm having the same rear view mirror issue, what did Tesla do to fix it? Mine SC doesn't know how to fix it.
@Ryan Shaw, 5:47 i agree it becomes a phone warmer. I think if tesla tones down the charge/energy rate for phone charging, it shouldn’t warm the phone. It currently charges my phone very fast
I've never had this issue with my Samsung S23 Ultra
One thing that is really annoying, when using google maps on my phone to plan a route and then sharing/sending it directly to the car, sometimes it doesnt know where to route to but offers similar options (usually when the destination name starts with a common street name or the name of a business that has many stores)...
Ive nearly gone to the wrong airport before because i didnt notice it selected a different one to what i set on google maps before sending it to the car 🤦🤷♂️
Do you have some kind of roof covering?
Mahalo for the video, we are looking for getting this in a few months.. but a lot of things you brought out didn’t bother me, which I get because there will be some things that are not a big deal for me then will be for you. But how do you find cleaning 🧼 the white seats?
Just like black seats. The white is a non-issue aside from some possible bleeding from your blue jeans which is addressable.
I was told squeaks and rattles aren't covered under warranty when I raised the issue of my steering wheel making a low-pitched bulldozer noise when it telescopes in.
Good video. Really appreciate that you are candid and forthright with the review of FSD. It's not worth it even at half the price!
_It's not worth it even at half the price!_
What you probably mean is that it isn't worth if *to you,* even at half the price. It is worth it to several hundred thousand Tesla owners, myself included.
My wife & I love our 2023 Model Y Long Range
Hi Ryan,
You didn't say anything about the battery degradation on your 2022 model Y
Does the referral link work only with purchase? Or can it be used after. I forgot to use it and I’m taking delivery soon.
does model 3 highland have acceleration boost option?
You also don't have to flash your high beams to bring up the menu. Pull is to flash high beams and it brings up the menu, but pushing the stalk just brings up the menu, the brights will not turn on.
Can you make a video with the contents of your safety kit?
7:14 I HAVE THE SAME RATTLE ON THE REARVIEW MIRROR HOUSING! I just smack the housing and it usually goes away for an hour 😅🤦🏻♂️ my fear is they’ll make it worse or not fix it at all like in your case and the closest service center is 2 hours away so I think I rather deal with it idk, my seat creaks too after my first and only seat replacement, but when they did that they scratched the interior B pillar trim, so they had to replace that after, so yeah, I’m just scared to fix my seat again and the mirror sound…
So how did they fix the seat belt rattle? I have the same thing in my 2023 Model Y performance, and the only solution I have found is to either raise the seat or buckle the seat belt. When the seat is at its lowest setting the seat belt rattles.
Can you control everything via voice commands rather than using the screen?
At 0:42 you mentioned the panoramic glass roof. You mentioned only the good, but the bad is that it lets in lots of heat during Summer time and as owners, we need to buy aftermarket sunshades or sunscreens to reduce the use of AC and other heat issue to our heads. If we don't use sunshade, the cabin can reach over 140 F when outside is only 95 F. Imagine using lots of AC and reducing range since using heat or cool air from the AC costs electric energy from the battery pack. I have seen range of my long range Model Y only reached195 miles for a 100% full charge going around LV and Grand Canyon area, that day was only 93-98 F from 12pm to 6pm. And the car is suppose to have 329 miles when its in full capacity.
The lack of a front view of basic info like speed and lack of a few basic physical buttons together with the rattling are really deal breakers for me
How are the new cars without the parking sensors? Hit or miss?
Fact that you kept talking your eyes off the road to interact with very basic functions is what’s concerning to me about having it all on the screen.
Most EV's from other brands don't have a frunk. The interior cam is also used in the new dog mode.
The cameras makes you see much better on the screen in any direction, then any rear view window etc anyway. Just activate it on the screen.
Hose? You mean cable.
I speculate it has to do with manufacturing issues and supply chain. Parts are not ready and would delay the sales on these vehicles further if they were to wait for the NACS components. They’ll still sell a few and then they can use those few to work out the bugs. The risk is releasing a sub par vehicle like Toyota just did does not build a positive reputation.
Somehow people keep missing the graphic that shows up on screen that tells you how to control the wipers with your steering wheel scroll wheel. You don't need to touch the screen at all to do the wipers. You press the wiper button then use the left scroll wheel side to side to control how fast you want it. It's not that difficult. I do think they are fixing auto and that is a big deal because you'd never need to do in manually.
I haev a question. If you have a non-Tesla EV and use teh Tesla supercharger, is the cost more than that which a Tesla driver gets charged? Is it a separate app?
If have the 2023 MYLR and I see absolutely no reason to purchase the acceleration boost. The thing accelerates like twice as fast as any other car I've had, it feels like a toy even without the boost. Think it's important to note that not having ultrasonic sensors on the newest cars feels like a huge step backwards, at least for now. The park assist is absolutely terrible, and not having a rain sensor makes the auto wipers unreliable as you mentioned. But outside of that I absolutely love the car.
I have a 2023 and I keep mine on Chill mode 99.9% of the time.
I just do a full blinker signal while in autosteer for lang changing. It stays in cruise and i re-engage autosteer when i pick a lane.
I like it when you film outside.
With autopilot existing, I don't know why people would really use traffic-aware cruise control by itself. I made just one pull-down to activate autopilot and it felt amazing because I always knew it would steer for me. It is so streamlined push down to turn on and up to turn off.
I don't know why you dont use voice command more to turn on and off wipers and navigation etc. Only one button to push then. Easy
Great video!
Acceleration boost makes it almost the same as performance in real world driving while still being cheaper, though the performance has come down in price so it's not as much of a value as before, though the suspension is more plush in the dual motor long range and you get longer range. I think if you test them side by side it's down to driver reaction as far as which will win in a straight line, though on a course with turns the performance will have more of an advantage but with some reduction in ride quality.
They have made significant progress in MYP suspension. It looks beautiful with the Uber turbine wheels, and the performance brakes are particularly safe during acceleration + Additional accessories all for $2500 more is a no-brainer. I am predicting the performance price will go up soon so act soon guys.
Maybe when Juniper comes out. Also, they should have dynamic dampers like BMW with sport and comfort modes at that price.@@mylovehandles
I could have sworn they were going to do a minimal refresh prior to the Juniper release? Ambient lighting, black dashboard and dark wheel covers? I thought it was coming very soon... Did I hallucinate all of that?
I have the mirror rattle also.
I want a MYP but all the little things would really bother me. Squeeks, wipers, turn signals, the tires are apparently set at like -2 tow so they wear quickly. I'm on the fence!
I've taken the MYP & MYLR for test drives, and both can give you wip lash. Both can overtake extremely fast , but the MYLR has softer suspension 😊. So we brought the MYLR, and it handles so well ❤. It's in the same style as Ryan's.
GREATEST REVIEW....I just got one because they had a huge discount in February.
