Loved this review. I started the game understanding that the hub quests were of similar difficulty to solo monsters of previous monster hunter titles. So I started this game playing the first few single player quests, then immediately moved on to hub quests and finished both hub and solo side by side, both as a single player. So in my experience, hub quests felt normal length and single player quests felt too short. I think this game provides a challenge to those who want it.

Solo is fun in Rise, but I also love the multiplayer. If you want to grind, you can join quests like mentioned in the video. If you just want to hang out a bit and take on random queats, you can join a lobby. Some of my favorite moments in Rise were from joining random lobbies. It is very rewarding to go against a Teostra multiple times with the same group of people beforee you finally take it down. Or at the end of the quest everyone does a weapon pose together. I highly recommend everyone try out lobbies. If you feel a little self concious about your abilities, create a lobby asking for help, or saying taking it easy.

I love the idea of a series just about soloing multiplayer games! I vastly prefer single player, especially now that we have a baby coming an multiplayer just won’t even be an option anymore. I bought this game recently after watching the review and have put about 50 hours into it, and just started on the Sunbreak DLC. After playing solo throughout most of the game (aside from a couple urgent quests that were played online with strangers), I can say it's definitely got a learning curve. For instance, the game has 3 difficulties, Low Rank (the one you start out with), High Rank (unlocked after 4* hub completion) and Master Rank with the Sunbreak DLC after 7* hub completion. Online guides are sort of missing bits and pieces, trying to navigate the weapon trees means going to higher ranks and defeating the higher tier monsters to unlock new options. Also, gear gets quickly outdated in all 3 difficulties, at Master Rank, my rathalos high rank armour had way less armour than a Great Izuchi in Master Rank, one of the first monsters you might fight. You basically restart the game at those points (aside from having to craft lower tier weapons to upgrade to high tiers). I'd definitely recommend playing with friends, the first 20-30 hours are probably spent just catching up to the point where veterans who have been playing for years are at.
Nice, i was wondering what you thought about this game since i saw your tweet. I've played pretty much every Monster Hunter title solo and i think Rise is the better single player experience. Hunts are fast and the grinding is less demanding compared to previous titles, which encourages experimenting with different weapon types. When i get bored of hunting, there's a photo mode that lets me go all 'pokemon snap' and fill up the monster index with photos. Great review by the way👍 i hope you come back for Sunbreak !
Though it has been said many times already in the comments, I too would like to express my thanks for this review. One of the things that frustrate me is when certain other reviewers prioritise multiplayer experiences in videogames, which can make it hard for a solo player to decide whether to purchase a game or not. The game may have a solo campaign / story mode, but if the review is all about multiplayer, or if the game only really works as a multiplayer, then that's a red flag for me. Then there's also the controls. Even though there's a demo for MH: Rise and I've tried it, I've found it hard to wrap my head around all of the controls available in the game. I could probably 'hack and slash' my way to a degree, but if I want to 'get guud' then I need more practice... and I only got a few more attempts of the demo left. Your video has basically sold me that, if I stick with it I can learn to like this game (and other similar games such as MH Generations, or God Eater 3). I'll wait for a deep sale, but next time that comes around, I'll probably give it a shot.
Village quests where supposed to be like a tutorial or a nerfed version of the monsters, not a solo experience. Hub quests are something more typical you would expect on a monster hunter game, but It's still balanced to play alone. Having people on multiplayer only makes some stats scale on the monster. I find it really weird that people think that monster hunter is a multiplayer focused game, it simply has that feature but no hunts are designed only to be played in a group.
this is true and this video is misleading. Hub quest monsters only scales up when theres an additional player on the quest. So when playing against solo hubquest monsters, its still nowhere near as the hps of the multiplayer monsters. Theres also only a little bit of content for the village quests, afterwards the rest and most of the content is on the hubquests.
just noticed you said there are only limited walls you can climb on, but actually you can run on any wall, if you keep pressing the run button while wall running, you can keep running on it as long as you have stamina
The Hub quests are tougher because they're tougher quests by design. As mentioned by Idrees25, the HP scale with number of players so tackling them solo is not a problem. In fact, most serious MH players only farm solo, going into group hunts more for fun than for efficiency.
As a player of MH3U, MHW-IB and MHR:S, I actually would recommend new players to hunt solo. In Rise you have to advance the story a lot of the time through hub quests. Hub quests have monsters with much bigger HP pools (lol you actually discuss this at 04:18). Multiplayer hub quests makes the HP bloat even worse, and MP quests may take you longer than solo because of the quality of your teammates.
Just bought Monster Hunter Rise on Steam. This will be my first time playing any of the Monster Hunter game so this video will help me greatly. Thank you. 🙂
The village quests must have changed since mh world, in world soon as you engaged in the fight you could summon help. Then the hp of the fight would increase, I think the hardest thing about multi player on these games is you get used to how the monster attacks you as an individual, but with a party you are uncertain if the attack is going for you, or for the other player making your reaction harder. Another thing with multi-player is say you need a horn break. Well that part is going to be a lot harder to break and if not everyone is focusing on that part, it can be difficult for that break. Take for instance daora horns, if the complete party wasn't focused on those horns, you were never going to get a horn break I do think certain weapons need a better tutorial. In particular the ammo types of heavy and light bowgun. Charge blade could be more helpful on what phials and stuff are and the switch axe to what the benefits of axe vs sword are
Ok, for real. I need this content. “Solo, but could it be fun?” I went to the channel hub, and you have not made a playlist of this subject. Ffffuu I hope you do. Thanks for this one, at the very least.
Like you, MHR was both my first game in the series and the first game I’ve ever spent any significant amount of time in multiplayer. I made a point of avoiding multiplayer in games due to the usually toxic atmosphere and constant banter. MHR has been a revelation in this aspect. Because of both the streamlined communication and the quality of the community itself, I’ve now spent over 150 hrs in multiplayer, filled with nothing but totally positive experiences. Like you mentioned, I could just as well be playing with a bunch of very polite AIs. It’s a really great game, very confidently realized, that rewards any effort you put into it.
This review os fantastically helpful, even just those questions at the end give me enough motivation to buy it. I played 4 ultimate a while back, this will be my return to the series
I played mhrise as my first MH game ever and first time on the switch. I played through sunbreak as well and continue to play solo. It's fun and I don't really like people. BUT my hubby is getting it soon so we will see how fun a 2 man run will be. 💖💖💖
The one thing missing from this video was armor and decoration skills. Those are vitally important to consider when considering what armor to craft, plus there's a separate crafting list for armor if you just like the look of a particular set.
Monster hunter fights are still mostly focused on being face to face, especially with rise counter heavy combat which lends itself to a really fun solo experience. Same for mh world but that one had sieges and raids you needed multiplayer for. You still can have a lot of fun in multiplayer even tho it kind of makes a few fights cake walks.
As a seasoned MH player I just wanted to say well done on this video. MH is NOT for everyone. It is hard to master and requires hundreds of hours to do so. You’ve explained everything the game has to offer quite eloquently. While I too prefer gaming as a solo endeavour, MH is the exception for me. My personal style is to solo a quest first, then replay it with others to grind for monster parts. Completing a quest is definitely faster with others. 30+ mins solo, 10-15 mins as a team. Happy hunting!
Very detailed and amazing review. I already have been playing the game but was nice to see your take on the game. It was the first video I watched from you but an easy sub from me.
These kind of games are perfectly good for solo playing. I remember playing Toukiden Kiwami on the PS Vita solo and 100% offline without any problems. I enjoyed it a lot and farmed the hell out of it 😂. I'm now playing MHR and although I'm playing it with my wife now, the game is the same as toukiden and completely doable in solo. In fact, sometimes I play alone for hours just because it's so much fun.
bro if you loved rise environment you saw nothing compared to world that games environment is like nothing iv ever seen in a video game the ecology is so freaking detailed i love it also imo world has deeper combat rise has more variety and for me depth>variety i think you will like it but yeah its way harder to get into than rise for most people
I've played hundreds of hours of world solo and almost 200 solo on rise. I play both solo and multi, enjoying both both mostly solo since coordinating with friends has gotten difficult these days since we all work full time with different shifts.
@@sharpdad33 Personally, I prefer World/Iceborne. There's an appeal to Rise too but it's a bit too fast and flashy for my taste. I like mastering simplicity and there's too much to learn about every weapon in Rise for me to play them all anywhere near their potential. In terms of quality as a video game they're both up there, imo which is better just depends on someone's taste.
started on switch and have 200 hours, bought on PS5 finished the story in 24 hours game time with one set of armor lol. same with world started on ps4 then got on PC and finished in 24 hours of game time and finished the story.
Been eyeing this up since it was released on the switch. So I love a multiplayer game but sometimes just want to go at it by myself. Then find myself bored as there's no interaction with other players so I'm glad this can cater for both as and when I want to solo or play online. Going to download the demo tomorrow and see how I get on and probably buy it if I like the demo 👌🏻
If you thought exploring on this game was fun then you should try monster hunter world. I feel like world has very fun maps to explore for a single player and with catching endemic life it is even more engaging than rise. I also feel like world caters to single players more because it has more of the story quests throughout and has phenomenal pacing. It definitely is more fun for a single player since I got through both it and iceborne but the slog of rises hub quests make it to where I can't even get past the first story before sunbreak.
i play this game on both online and offline if i want to increase my skill and get used to monster move set then i go solo, which help to prevent embarrassment to get carted on multiplayer if i just want to have fun then i go to multiplayer, things like paralyze and KO has more value on multiplayer
I've held off moving forward on this game because I didn't want to do "group" quests. I just came back tonight and decided to hunt the high rank solo. I struggled with Tigrex, but pulled it out.
Thanks so much for your honesty! I'd been thinking the same things! After what you've said I've come to the conclusion this wont be my type of game as I'm very much not into steep learning curves and having to learn a plethora of different moves Save me a bit! :)
Ever since I learned how to guard point in monster Hunter world, I've actually found playing solo easier than multiplayer. To the point that I no longer bring the cat or the dog when playing rise, just because that means the monster will always attack me and I know it will always attack me so there are no whiffed guard points anymore.
I played the hell out of monster hunter world. I played with friends most of the time, but after learning the monsters moves and patterns you can kill any minster solo. The gameplay can be hard at first, but you really feel like a complete badass when you master every mechanic of the game
Obviously, why do people need so much convincing these days just fucking play it. I've played every game solo since i was a kid (living in a 3rd world country so it's super hard to find anyone with a PC/console).
Yes and I'd even argue it's better than multiplayer. Doing village quests I had to learn patterns, upgrade my gear and generally be a lot more involved with the mechanics. In multiplayer I didn't need any of that. There's always one or two players beating the sh*t out of the monsters why everyone else's job was simply not to die...
Dont skip -Back to basic- Quest... training quest.. Run it With R2 momment you get it.. I had horrible expiriance, started with hub quest.. Play offline first..
I played most of the game solo and only started using multiplayer in high-rank 6* quests. Honestly it feels to me like the monster battle mechanics were engineered specifically for online play. When fighting a monster alone, the monster is only focused on YOU and if you’re using a less agile weapon, it can be really frustrating as some monsters simply move too fast to land hits consistently. Even one other player allows you the opportunity to land some solid hits while the monster focuses on the other player. Rise was my first monster hunter game so I didn’t even consider this through my solo playtime but now that I’ve tried multiplayer I find going at it alone really frustrating. It’s a game designed for multiplayer - plain and simple. Btw I’m a hunting horn main.
playing multiplayer for Hub Quest is to speedup the hunt, but for enjoying the hunt, it's better to solo unless playing Event Quests which is more harder lol
I've been playing Monster Hunter since 3U and my 10 year old son worked out the gameplay and all the mechanics and is now better at it than me in 10 hours.
Officially in multiplayer in World I have had a lot of headaches. When you get together with strangers you always end up with bad organization, yelling and so on. I like Monster Hunter, but I'd rather play everything solo than be annoyed when playing in a group.
i have play solo in most of case and for me solo are more fun because is quicker than multi and you learn better your weapon and monster pattern, lower mission like low/high rank and master rank in multi are fun but in anomaly investigation solo with follower are so much better for quick grind! (solo 80%/multi 20%)
But the hunting horn is not very useful unless you plan on spending most of your time in multiplayer, as one of the main uses of hunting horn is to buff teammates
i play single player games because i love the story. i just wish MH games have a better story. the combat mechanics are perfect for me. if there is a new MH game that is more story-driven i would definitely buy another game.
Just wait till you unlock following quests there fun you get to bring AI with you and the more you bring them the better they become better it's sooo fun I love it once you unlock rise the hole game gets so much more content it's insane
If you are looking to get into MH series I’d recommend trying MW World first. It is imo much more new player friendly, there’s a much more in-depth story, there are several beautiful environments, the monsters scale amazingly in terms of difficulty. MH Rise is also good but imo is slightly a downgrade in many aspects from World.
Haven't played Rise yet, but even though i loved World and have almost 500 hours on it (all solo)... Fatalis and Alatreon are a nightmare for solo players, i think.
I just bought this game and i was hating it. Until I found out that i should be doing village quests solo. Thanks to you I was just running hub quests like a tattie haha
No point in only single player unless you have bad internet. I'm a single player person and am very introverted, but there is no mic communication which makes it nice as I don't have to communicate, it's like playing with ai. If you want a super challenge play alone
Im play MH solo since the first title. First i had no online Connection. Then with freedom unite i played a little bit in local with some other guys nearby. But again i ended up solo. In world i played a little bit online but for the need of forced group quests but ended up solo again. Now in sunbreak i played again a little bit online but got back to solo because the helpers are much better than other randoms 😂
Just started playing this. Switch backlog lol. I went in hoping for only single player grind and just got done 3 hrs of multi-player and had a great time.
I find that playing MP really slows down the game - maybe because a lot of players just button mash and don't know all of the little ins and outs of doing the maximum amount of damage. If you have experienced players with you, then hunts are crazy short and sometimes monsters don't even have a chance to attack. You just never know what you're going to get with random players.

Take for instance daora horns, if the complete party wasn't focused on those horns, you were never going to get a horn break
I do think certain weapons need a better tutorial.
Great video and appreciate all the information
Way more fun 👌
The multi is almost a bonus
I Love The Collab Option ❤I'm Also Glad They're Continuing That On The Mhwilds❤
Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!
What a great video! Thanks for that, covered everything I wanted to know about Rise.
bro if you loved rise environment you saw nothing compared to world that games environment is like nothing iv ever seen in a video game the ecology is so freaking detailed i love it
also imo world has deeper combat rise has more variety and for me depth>variety i think you will like it but yeah its way harder to get into than rise for most people
World deeper combat? lol.
Subbed, fantastic video from QuestMode on Hunter Rise and the offline aspects of the game. very well made video and explanation
I've played hundreds of hours of world solo and almost 200 solo on rise. I play both solo and multi, enjoying both both mostly solo since coordinating with friends has gotten difficult these days since we all work full time with different shifts.
What game do you prefer?
@@sharpdad33 Personally, I prefer World/Iceborne. There's an appeal to Rise too but it's a bit too fast and flashy for my taste. I like mastering simplicity and there's too much to learn about every weapon in Rise for me to play them all anywhere near their potential.
In terms of quality as a video game they're both up there, imo which is better just depends on someone's taste.
I played through all if Rise into Sunbreak Solo. It's very doable.
Great review. I especially appreciate the solo vs multiplayer breakdown.
Great review. I’ll be playing this game mostly solo 👍🏻
Have fun!
Its the best way to go for a first playthrough
started on switch and have 200 hours, bought on PS5 finished the story in 24 hours game time with one set of armor lol. same with world started on ps4 then got on PC and finished in 24 hours of game time and finished the story.
Great review! Exactly what I was looking for!
It definitely is more fun for a single player since I got through both it and iceborne but the slog of rises hub quests make it to where I can't even get past the first story before sunbreak.
i play this game on both online and offline
if i want to increase my skill and get used to monster move set then i go solo, which help to prevent embarrassment to get carted on multiplayer
if i just want to have fun then i go to multiplayer, things like paralyze and KO has more value on multiplayer
I've held off moving forward on this game because I didn't want to do "group" quests. I just came back tonight and decided to hunt the high rank solo. I struggled with Tigrex, but pulled it out.
Thanks so much for your honesty!
I'd been thinking the same things!
After what you've said I've come to the conclusion this wont be my type of game as I'm very much not into steep learning curves and having to learn a plethora of different moves
Save me a bit!
Great review! Exactly what I needed!
Ran through the hub quest first now just coasting through single player like a goat.
This is good to know because I have no one to play with for now and at the same time I want to play this game.
Great video. Please make more of these types of videos. Thanks
Obviously, why do people need so much convincing these days just fucking play it. I've played every game solo since i was a kid (living in a 3rd world country so it's super hard to find anyone with a PC/console).
I play just about all of them solo until I get to unlocked HRs. I like having the option to team up while also enjoying the challenge of MH solo.
Thank you for your video. I enjoyed it very much. Super helpful!!
Btw I’m a hunting horn main.
very good review. it also provides detailed information about different gameplay mechanics. two thumbs up👍👍
Thanks!
Just started my 10th...TENTH... playthrough of MHR. Yea it's fun. End gets better in Sunbreak cuz of the companions.
I play Solo to remind myself that I’m always alone. So I have to keep growing or fail on my own.
playing multiplayer for Hub Quest is to speedup the hunt, but for enjoying the hunt, it's better to solo
unless playing Event Quests which is more harder lol
I've been playing Monster Hunter since 3U and my 10 year old son worked out the gameplay and all the mechanics and is now better at it than me in 10 hours.
Officially in multiplayer in World I have had a lot of headaches. When you get together with strangers you always end up with bad organization, yelling and so on. I like Monster Hunter, but I'd rather play everything solo than be annoyed when playing in a group.
I like MH solo but I get really lonely playing it by myself so I can’t do too much solo at a time
im just glad Sunbreak listen to our heed, they included AI teamates for quest i wish the future MH will include this
MH is a series you 100% can play solo. I play mostly solo but I do enjoy multiplayer now and then.
i have play solo in most of case and for me solo are more fun because is quicker than multi and you learn better your weapon and monster pattern, lower mission like low/high rank and master rank in multi are fun but in anomaly investigation solo with follower are so much better for quick grind! (solo 80%/multi 20%)
14:43 you don't have to use the long sword. You're able to change your weapon from the get-go at your item box.
But the hunting horn is not very useful unless you plan on spending most of your time in multiplayer, as one of the main uses of hunting horn is to buff teammates
@@oofcall9115XD
I play most monsters solo but it was helpful having friends co op during the beginning and for behemoth
Yeah. It's still fun Solo, but I played yesterday with friends and it was pretty cool.
I’ve never managed to find anybody to play the game with, and I’ve loved it solo.
It’s more fun for going solo, taking time to understand the gameplay and little by little you’ll get the hang of it , so yeah
This was helpful, thanks
multiplayer monster hunter will always be more fun then solo unless you get 3 afk bots or something
i play single player games because i love the story. i just wish MH games have a better story. the combat mechanics are perfect for me. if there is a new MH game that is more story-driven i would definitely buy another game.
Just wait till you unlock following quests there fun you get to bring AI with you and the more you bring them the better they become better it's sooo fun I love it once you unlock rise the hole game gets so much more content it's insane
Great idea, single player focus review.
You could also get both as MHW is pretty cheap these days. MHR Village is a lot more forgiving for newbies.
Was going to sub but he seems to be inactive for a year, anybody know if he's taking a break, or suddenly left? :S
Awesome review subscribed!
Nice review i just started a solo on my switch too. What is the song in the background in the exploration part?
