Ive been playing Monster Hunter seriously since Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on PSP and I always wanted to play long sword... I never used it cause it was considered a "noob" weapon but now I can see how technical the weapon is and I ll finally try to use it in Rise 🙏🏾
I mean, the 'basic principle' of the longsword is fairly simple. You start by building and leveling your gauge three times. Then it's a matter of spending one gauge level and rebuilding/re-levling it, and repeating that process. The technical aspect of it comes into play with the various ways to build your gauge and avoid damage while doing so - mainly through various counters. Personally, I only have about 100 hours in World, and it's the first MH game I've played for any significant amount of time. I played longsword for a little while, though, but didn't find it too fun because I couldn't get the hang of countering. I'm guessing that's something that mostly just requires a lot more experience with the game, including the monsters I'm fighting. Longsword is definitely one of the more complex and technical melee weapons, though.
Thought I was a Hammer main, then a Greatsword main. Now I just got done with my first few tries with a Gunlance, and I'm loving the play style even more than either-and I only decided to try it because of this video. Thanks!
Been kinda bouncing between switch axe and dual blades, but I've been giving the weapons types a try. The only three I haven't tried yet are the heavy bow gun, the bow, and the gun lance. In mh3 ultimate I was a dual blades main. The only other mh game I've played is mh stories 2, which feels like the off spring of mh and pokemon. If you haven't played it, you can collect monsters to fight along side you in turn based combat. You still need to collect monster parts for weapons and armor, but not every weapon type seems to be available.
I have always been stubbornly swag axe but now after playing the demo I'm all chips in on heavy bowgun. That counter really made all the difference for me.
I kind of worry about the counters in Rise, been a gunner since MH1 on PS2 and been through it all. Hands down HBG is consistently the highest DPS weapon in the games, and I love gunning because it amplifies the MH fundamentals in order to be better, such as positioning, awareness, learning monsters etc, but it ALSO benefits more than blademasters do from armour skills and builds, I mean, just look at world Meta, all spread HBGs. I love gunning for that reason. So, now you have this counter and it feels amazing, but, I cannot see a single downside to HBG now, its going to be SO powerful in the full game, It was already top tier, but the alternate counter causes you to charge shots faster... thats insane. Plus most weapons seem to have some form of counter now, I worry the game will be way to easy because of that. Back in the day, that was the Lances biggest feature, now loads of weapons can do it.
@@MysteriousStranger50 dude you used the hbg on mh1? you liked pain did you? but i kinda agree, on the right hands the hbg was op, in world it became so much broken and now i just don't see any downsides. as a lbg main i just don't see why should i pick it when the hbg now has basically the same mobility and that op counter
@@MysteriousStranger50 Dang I feel like people like me are ruining Monster Hunter for you guys. But to be fair, while the counter is still a pretty extreme addition, the acrobatic wire bug movements in general really curve out the skill required for the slower and heavy mobile weapons. I am actually playing MH3 on wii just for old times sake and just the movement in general has made the demo too easy. Being able to walk around while drinking potions turns the difficulty down a ton. It took away running around and praying for your monster to do an attack with a long animation cycle to chug a mega potion, but now you just jump on your dog and you can even drink on the run now. It would be interesting if they could introduce a punish mechanic for being too mobile like the more you move the more the monster will specifically aggro you with increased speed or something like that.
Since starting the series with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, I've made a point to learn at least one new weapon with each game. 3U I learned Longsword, 4U I learned Insect Glaive, Generations was the Gunlance and Sword+Shield, GenU I took to the Palico, and World was the Dual Blades and Light bowgun. I think this time I'll try out the iconic Greatsword.
Same here! Similar start with Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate and mained the great sword and switch axe, then played 4 and did longsword, World I did insect glaive and bow (in 2 seperate playthroughs), now I'm considering dual blades or sword & shield
awesome video! I now realise I have a thing for weapons with shields. Sword and SHield, Lance, Gunlance user and hoping to learn the Charge Blade in Rise!
As usual, you are an apex predator with gaming guides. I even want to paraphrase what you have said in an older guide video for Monster Hunter World that still applies to Rise... by comparing each weapon to a respective game: 0:54 Hammer: Overwatch (Tracer) 1:49 Longsword: Dynasty Warriors 2:40 Greatsword: Nioh 3:35 Bow: Doom Eternal 4:33 Insect Glaive: Dragon's Dogma 5:28 Lance: Any RPG or MMO game favoring "Tank" role 6:24 Light Bowgun: Horizon Zero Dawn 7:22 Charge Blade: Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice 8:16 Dual Blades: God of War series (PS2/PS3) 9:06 Hunting Horn: Support class of most RPGs 9:55 Sword and Shield: Dark Souls 10:50 Heavy Bowgun: Gears of War 11:46 Switch Axe: Bloodborne 12:40 Gunlance: Squall Leonhart
I like the Sword and Shield combo the best in this game. It carried me through the elite hunts amazingly well. For one, it's a weapon type you can sheathe very quickly in order to pull heal before getting back into the action. The shield of course helps with the defensive, but the sword slashes are quick and deal a pretty good DPS. And you can wire jump even with it out allowing for more evasive movements. But the best feature is its implementation of the wires in the form of what I like to call the Kratos Blender, twirling both parts of the weapon set and dealing swift damage, totaling over a hundred damage.
Love the video so far and I'm only 2 minutes in. Just wanted to say it felt like there was a missed opportunity at 1:45 to say "The hammer really hits the nail on the head." Just a personal opinion lol
I'm a big bowgun fan. Especially with the heavy one giving you a great counter attack option. Let alone the fun of shooting up a storm a variety of ways. Though I'll admit to liking most of the other weapons for certain prey more. Like Insect Glaives for Rathians and sometimes Barioths. Or the various defensive weapons for Barroths and Tetrandons.
I main the dual blades but always trying different weapons to get different feels this video really gave some insight on the pros and cons on other weapons thanks 👍
I like the Charge Blade and Insect Glaive the most. Was actually looking for a video on how to use both to full potential, but good video regardless, appreciate.👍
I love dual blades because it allows me to just turn off my brain and go unga bunga mode, just mash away at buttons occasionally mashing two at once, very fun
I was unsure what weapon I'd choose until I saw the compressed discharge move for Switch axe.. That move is so incredibly cool that it basically made the decision for me
same, im honestly gravitating to the bow guns, sense i love how they are in Rise but i didnt like how they were in the old gen games, and i never played world
Nice, yeah using all the weapons makes the combat more satisfying, but not only that but monsters have their own combat style which makes some weapons more or less effective against them, so weapons masters like us are more versatile in combat.
That's something I wanted to do at the time in World but once you put your hands on an bow from the beginning of the game you just don't change it. The bow has such a unique play style that it makes it very difficult to switch to other weapons once you have progressed too far in the game. However when Rise is available on PC I will try to start with other weapons to diversify. Although probably the only thing that I will get is to pigeonhole in two weapons instead of one XD
@@brago900 unfortunately I don't think it'll land on pc, it was designed specifically for the switch, if you can give an example of a Nintendo exclusive that made its way on to pc then maybe it could, but I can't think of any.
I played Monster Hunter World for 150 hours back in the day on ps4. Now that I’m playing Rise on PC, if feels like I’m completely fresh to the franchise again. This has definitely soothed my confusion, nice work man!
I've watched several reviews of this game, which has left me confused as to whether I should purchase this game. But this video explains the combat so well I feel confident this is a game for me. Great video 👍
Have played mostly as hammer, lance, or Greatsword in the past. Might give plain old SnS a shot this time! I think I still sort of prefer the 'plain' weapon types without extra mechanics and gauges/ammo etc.
Hunting Horn is the only weapon type that really feels 'wrong' to me - though there are quite a few that I haven't got the hang of yet! Got only about 100 hours in World, so it's not like I have massive amounts of experience with every weapon type. Started out with Charge Blade, but found that I need a lot more practice with it before it really becomes enjoyable. Switched to Longsword, but had trouble getting the hang of countering. Now switching between Hammer, Greatsword, and occasionally Switch Axe - though I do want to get back into the Charge Blade, and I'd also like to get better at at least one of the ranged options.
my best advice is - try all of them. I played roughly 10 simple hunts with each weapon before i picked my main for World and then I did the same for Rise. Ended up playing SnS in world till the end before i started picking up new weapons, with rise i did the same but with the Gunlance. I think because of how the games work and whats the mobility and speed of each game each weapon will feel different in a way and fit your playstyle more
@@atlasdgen Both lance and gunlance seem to have a surprising amount of mobility, actually, between the little "hop dodges" and their unique mobility skills, especially in Rise. Have not played any of the shield weapons in Rise (yet), but I have played a bit of Hunting Horn, and mobility might be the area in which I feel it's the most lacking - aside from the fact that the song list takes up way, WAY too much space on-screen.
So far, I see myself going back to a longsword main. World kinda forced me to experiment with the other weapons, but here I think I will be doing what I do best. Sorry in advance if I knock you around a bit in multiplayer.
This is my first Monster Hunter game and the one I've felt more comfortable overall is the switch axe. I feel like I don't miss that many hits, and it feels strong!
Switch axe has become my second favorite. Dual blades are my favorite so far since first using them in mh3 ultimate. This is my my third monster hunter. Played mh3 ultimate first. My second, which I'm also currently playing, is mh stories 2 (the combat in it is turn based instead of action based like other mh games).
I finally preordered yesterday, can't wait! It was cool to watch all the new wirebug skills but I'll just end up being an insect glaive gal again anyway :D :3
wow, MH has come a long way from when i used to play on my psp MHFU back in 2005, watching this is nudging me to get MHR, LS, DB, Hammer and Bow are still my faves. Great video explaining the other weapons i dont know about.
Cool video. I am brand new to the series and gravitate towards charge blade. I read that it is complex for new players but I still like it a lot. heavy bowgun gets honorable mention too
Yes. I did one swing with the starting sword and decided that wasn't for me... played DB ever since (i'm pretty new in the game tho, and Rise was my first MH game)
Man apparently I played so much gunlance in World that when gunlance came up my tendons and muscle in my hand started to twitch from muscle memory. I think I'm going down the SnS path this time though.

I even want to paraphrase what you have said in an older guide video for Monster Hunter World that still applies to Rise... by comparing each weapon to a respective game:
0:54
Hammer: Overwatch (Tracer)
1:49
Longsword: Dynasty Warriors
2:40
Greatsword: Nioh
3:35
Bow: Doom Eternal
4:33
Insect Glaive: Dragon's Dogma
5:28
Lance: Any RPG or MMO game favoring "Tank" role
6:24
Light Bowgun: Horizon Zero Dawn
7:22
Charge Blade: Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice
8:16
Dual Blades: God of War series (PS2/PS3)
9:06
Hunting Horn: Support class of most RPGs
9:55
Sword and Shield: Dark Souls
10:50
Heavy Bowgun: Gears of War
11:46
Switch Axe: Bloodborne
12:40
Gunlance: Squall Leonhart
I like the Sword and Shield combo the best in this game. It carried me through the elite hunts amazingly well. For one, it's a weapon type you can sheathe very quickly in order to pull heal before getting back into the action. The shield of course helps with the defensive, but the sword slashes are quick and deal a pretty good DPS. And you can wire jump even with it out allowing for more evasive movements. But the best feature is its implementation of the wires in the form of what I like to call the Kratos Blender, twirling both parts of the weapon set and dealing swift damage, totaling over a hundred damage.
Might have to check out lance after watching this. Perfectly described my playstyle. Thank you!
As a total newbie, this is very helpful. Thanks!
This will be my first Monster Hunter game and I cant wait! Really useful info, thanks!
You're in for a blast! Happy hunting fellow hunter!
Definitely enjoying the Switch Axe and Hunting Horn thus far
Love the video so far and I'm only 2 minutes in. Just wanted to say it felt like there was a missed opportunity at 1:45 to say "The hammer really hits the nail on the head." Just a personal opinion lol
This is my first game, and for now, I'll stick with sword and shield. I just want a weapon that fast but also not ranged.
I'm loving the MH content.
Thanks!
I keep telling myself I'll pick up hunting horn or charge blade, but I can feel the hammer calling me back already... I gotta Bonk
The best weapon in Monster Hunter is the one you gel with the most. For me? That's Insect Glaive and Light Bowgun. Sitting still is for chumps.
Main IG, Dual Blade, Bow and Longsword for me. Tho I use Hammer and Greatsword a lot too.
Amazingly concise breakdown, Alex.
Awesome video! Just got my preload downloading, can't wait till next Friday!
long sword feels like a completely new weapon compared to the GU version, and i love it. also, i want to learn to play lance, LBG and maybe gunlance
This video needs more attention. This is very informative and straight-forward!
I main the dual blades but always trying different weapons to get different feels this video really gave some insight on the pros and cons on other weapons thanks 👍
How the hell is this guy not the number one gaming channel on the platform. No one does what he does.
Hey thanks!
Me: Maybe i should move on and start with another weapon thn HH, i am a hh main in MHW already
Me: back to hh like nothing changed
HH is the only weapon worth using in MHR rn it's just SO fluid and intuitive... They just perfected the weapon imo
The Lance looks so cool. Monster just minding its business then CHARRGE, also the shield defense
Dual Blades, rip and tear. Switch skill demon flight is awesome, Levi spins anywhere. DB was made for me. HBG with wyvernheart is another favorite.
Great sword and hammer I love the heavy hitters
13 year old me: buy mh4u as first mh game -> look at all weapons -> ????? -> charge blade.
Me minus the 13y.o. part lol
Me except sns again
you did an AMAZING JOB with this video.
ty
sweet video! thank you, this is gonna be useful.
Great video dude, you described all 14 weapons way better than Capcom ever has 😂👌 Look forward to more from you.
hey thanks!
I was unsure what weapon I'd choose until I saw the compressed discharge move for Switch axe.. That move is so incredibly cool that it basically made the decision for me
Sick!
same, im honestly gravitating to the bow guns, sense i love how they are in Rise but i didnt like how they were in the old gen games, and i never played world
@@Wolfstrong01 Same actually! I'm considering also trying out Light bowgun despite never liking ranged weapons in Monster Hunter
I was one of the few players in MH World who had over 40 uses for every weapon, I'm proud of that.
Same I like all the weapons I’ll do the same with rise their all solid in the demo
@@VidiverseExplorer It is confirmed that it will be available on PC in 2022.
I went from light bowgun to bow to finally dual blades with groundstyle movement. Love it.
This is my first monster game I purchased and it looks like I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me but I can’t wait 💯🔥
going to be buying this next week, thanks for the video very informative
You helped me find a weapon when I started with World! I will not be playing until the PC release of Rise but in the meantime have a thumbs up. :)
hey thanks!
@@BoomstickGamingI'm finally starting Rise! lol
This was a well done video congratulations it's impressive
Have played mostly as hammer, lance, or Greatsword in the past. Might give plain old SnS a shot this time! I think I still sort of prefer the 'plain' weapon types without extra mechanics and gauges/ammo etc.
Exactly. I love hammer but hate the fact it has 2 modes now.
@@hilmanic28 Yeah, you just stick to one of the two anyway, or at least i do.
I think because of how the games work and whats the mobility and speed of each game each weapon will feel different in a way and fit your playstyle more
Nah man Hunting Horn is broken
Kinda surprised he put hunting horn's mobility on a 2 tho coz it's so much faster than a gunlance

Ironically, I ended up get hit more by my own team today.
You could always use a flinch free gem
This is my first Monster Hunter game and the one I've felt more comfortable overall is the switch axe. I feel like I don't miss that many hits, and it feels strong!
Switch axe has become my second favorite. Dual blades are my favorite so far since first using them in mh3 ultimate. This is my my third monster hunter. Played mh3 ultimate first. My second, which I'm also currently playing, is mh stories 2 (the combat in it is turn based instead of action based like other mh games).
Very helpful for a MH new comer! Thanks!
I finally preordered yesterday, can't wait! It was cool to watch all the new wirebug skills but I'll just end up being an insect glaive gal again anyway :D :3
I appreciate that you have knowledge of how to properly use a lance and didn't just say "triple poke and charge is all it has."
Swag axe is looking good, going to be doing the zero-sum into the dive stab a lot, and I might use the new replacement to zero sum on solo hunts
wow, MH has come a long way from when i used to play on my psp MHFU back in 2005, watching this is nudging me to get MHR, LS, DB, Hammer and Bow are still my faves. Great video explaining the other weapons i dont know about.
Cool video. I am brand new to the series and gravitate towards charge blade.
I read that it is complex for new players but I still like it a lot. heavy bowgun gets honorable mention too
I'm a very traditional MH player. It was a bit difficult getting into World's changes, but this I'm definitely giving a try
if you haven't started already imo if you liked the old games this one even beats those
This help me confirm my weapon choice! Glad to see these finally coming in handy for the new crop of Rise players!
Funlance and Hunting Horn as always
Was a Gunlance Main in world but I really gotta say. I think I will play the regular lance in this game!
Honestly never thought i would try out hhorn until this vid
Well, HH was the real winner in the buff division. Feels really different from the static version of world.
Some HH have a buff wich gives you dual blade-like mobility, along with a huge hammer. It was the trigger for me to play that weapon
I mained insect glaive in Monster Hunter World and plan on doing the same in Rise
This was handy knowledge of the new moveset thank you.
"The gunlance feels home right under the monster"
*laughs in long shelling*
already know which weapon im going with and its never gonna change tbh... charge blade
All of these look so good
I want to use it all
Those Hunting Horn changes look sweet, cannot wait to play Rise
Greeetings, new sub here! I appreciate all the content on this video. GoodJob!
Hey thanks!
I started my mh adventure in world, using the ls and bow.
Ive moved onto rise. I really like the gs and the gl now.
uhhh am I the only one who can’t decide on one weapon because they’re all so fun to use
No I bought the game yesterday and have yet to boot it up because I can't freaking decide!!!
@@traphousegamer1906 You don't have to decide, I play them all.
Yes. I did one swing with the starting sword and decided that wasn't for me... played DB ever since (i'm pretty new in the game tho, and Rise was my first MH game)
NICE intro
Reminds me of your 14 MHW weapons vid that got me into the series thank you
Really good video this honestly helps with beginners as I’m an awful teacher lol
Yo what a great video. Recently converted lbg main here~
Fanning vault is a game changer for that thing
Man apparently I played so much gunlance in World that when gunlance came up my tendons and muscle in my hand started to twitch from muscle memory. I think I'm going down the SnS path this time though.
I don't even like MH but this video was really entertaining
I mained longsword in World. I think I might go with hunting horn or charge blade in Rise.
I've always been Hammer, but the Swaxe and Dual Blades have me interested
I use the dual blades in MHW a good recommendation is decent armor and go for the belly.
