Another extremely important multiplayer manner I wish more people would have in mind: Depending on the monster, observant players will either prefer to capture or even specifically *kill* certain monsters. Either because cap rewards are better, or because carve rewards are better for them. If a player says "Cap ready." Then cease fire, because the monster is limping and further damage risks killing it. If a player requests you kill the monster, then do not capture it for them, because you're taking away their opportunity to get a carve they might need.

waaait a minute, you can ride your dog mid-combat and sharpen your weapon while riding around? This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in a game
One of my favorite additions to this game. In MHW stopping to sharpen your weapon every 5 minutes was a pain in the ass. Now its super easy to slip away during a fight or do it while youre moving between areas. Letting us use items while on the Palamute has been a huge improvement for the flow of the game, you never feel like you're wasting time or stalling.
In Rise you can sharpen while riding doggo, In world you can cancel sharpen animation by rolling (you can still do this in Rise), in older game you are stuck in sharpen animation once you use whetstone

This video has helped more than any other beginner video. I'm new to the MH series. Or rather, I tried when MH World came out, but I was overwhelmed and had no idea how to do anything properly. All videos seem to be for people that have a basic understanding of the game already, but this one is tailored for the babies like me! Thank you so much!
I can say one thing as a newbie, (I've done quick forays into the old 3DS games) that the MH community has been soooo incredibly kind, welcoming and helpful to new players. I used to get a lot of "git gud" from other online communities unless it was made clear that I was a grill and then it was completely other kinds of unwanted "help". MH has been soooo welcoming and helpful in a genuine way and I love it and just hope one day I git gud enough that I can help the next newbies. Don't be scared to jump right in. Dont hang back and don't be afraid to ask for advice. It's just a game and it's so much fun.
As someone who jumped right in and bought Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise at the same time on Black Friday sale, this introduction was incredibly helpful. The in-game text menu turned me off for about a week until I watched this and got back into it.
I have been wanting to get into monster hunter rise for some time but couldn't do it. It was all overwhelming. So glad I found this video very too the point and not a bunch extra crap to overwhelm a beginner. Before this video I thought the hub was the only place to get quests so I was handicapping myself from the start. Seriously well done.
Another tip: Watch your Zenny. It's essentially the currency needed to buy things at the shop. There are also Points, which do the same thing, but for different shops such as the Argosy exchange/Buddy dojo/Meowcenaries. Both Zenny and Points can be used to pay for the meals at the canteen. And Zenny is used at the smithy for upgrading/forging Armor and weapons. Both can be earned by doing quests, but during the early game, It can be quite difficult to manage your Zenny. There are certain items which their only purpose is to be sold(steel/silver/gold/platinum eggs, The various ores that you can buy for points at the argosy's rare finds, etc...) the TH-camr GaijinHunter has a tutorial on how to make Zenny super fast.
Chef’s kiss!! Can’t believe I’m just seeing this now, but MAN I would’ve loved a guide like this when I started 4U... I was stuck with an older brother who thought it was hilarious that I didn’t need to sharpen a weapon 😓 but as always, great to hear Pat’s love for the series :’)
You can definitely play this game single player, monster hunter might not be for everyone, but I’ve been having a big-bang-blast of a time playing (in single player)
Yeah, you can have a great experience playing totally solo. The quests in the Gathering Hub, which in previous titles would be permanently scaled for multiplayer, will now scale down if you take them on by yourself.
As a SnS (Sword and Shield) main, I would like to point out that elemental damage is better for quick hitting weapons like the SnS, Dual Blades and Insect Glaive. Slower weapons benefit more from higher normal damage
I'm new to the series and even though I manage to understand some minor things by myself this few days I learned A LOT by checking in this video, everything was well explained and very informative, kudos for that!!
Thanks so much for this! I'm new to the series and I didn't like how overwhelmed I was with the UI and controls. I also started realizing I was not having fun because I was overwhelmed so this video really helps.
This was really useful! I was very confused at first because of the walls of text the game gives to explain stuff, and this explained things well, thank you! :)
you literally save me haha 3 days playing without knowing it. and finally got to enjoy haha. this 18 mins literally make me slay more than 8 huge monster alone haha
I've got 2000+ hours in these games and I watched this whole video just enjoying his voice telling me things I already know. The Courtesy tips are very important, I've been seeing some vicious long-sword-trippers in Rise online. Here's an extra tip: Get one point in "Flinch Free" skill, it's a life-saver in multiplayer!
Saved this video! Thanks so much for this Pat/Polygon! Picking this game up later this week and will be my first real Monster Hunter game after being unable to really get into Monster Hunter World. After playing the demo and watching countless vids I feel like I’m finally confidently grasping the mechanics
This is my first MH game. So far I'm enjoying it and can easily see myself becoming VERY into it, but only if I can get decent at the game lol. I have to say that it seems very intimidating still and there's a lot to learn. Also, I feel like the in-game tutorials and explanations could be a lot better. But I know MH fans are crazy about it, so I'll keep pushing.
Legit I started playing World entirely based on seeing Pat and Griffin's streams from years back and now MH is one of my favourite series of all time. I still watch the streams on an embarrassingly consistent basis - it's the hyperfixation that MH really does lend itself to. My friend got me Rise last week and I just finished the main story tonight - as Griffin said, I'm "deep in that post-game grind".
Lmao I can’t believe that I was like “yoooo why the hell is this monster still a live I have ten minutes left” but apparently that quest was a multiplayer quest lmao
I just got this game (first time monster hunter plauer) was not having fun at all until I found this video!!! I am a visual learner. So the in game instructions dont mean anything to me. But this video was my savior. Now I'm addicted and cant stop playing
I am originally a Dauntless player. My god they are the same fucking games. Clearly Dauntless is the wish, free version of Monster Hunter with a whole lot less features but I'm glad I played it, because the hunting part is probably gonna go a whole lot smoother than it would if I was a total noob at this. Awesome vid, cheers man
Very helpful video! I'm just picking this up as my first Monster Hunter and the amount to learn is daunting, but more management when it's broken down simply like this
great sword and hammer are actually great beginners weapons because it pretty much forces you to learn monster attack patterns. also its much more satisfying seeing big damage numbers
I agree. With the hammer early on you only need to really focus on a couple weapon combos and you'll be fine. It gives you more time to focus on the monster's behavior and attacks as you're charging your hammer
The title is so aggressive and the video is so calming… Anyway, turns out I WILL watch an almost 20 minute long tutorial video about a game I will never play and that I don’t know anything about IF Pat is doing the talking.
I put over 1000 hours into mh4 with my 3ds back in the day. I'm so excited to play with the insect glaive and switch axe again. Thanks for the refresher!
Thanks for the tutorial. It explains a lot. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never played any of the Monster Hunter games. I know, I know why haven’t I played them before. Lol I been playing WOW for years. lol Gonna pick a range weapon to start out with. Playing WoW my main toon was a Hunter. Thanks again! ✌🏻❤️
Thanks for the vid, this was the most helpful one I've found. Just bought Rise and it's my first MH game. I've wanted to break in for a while but never got around to it, finally decided to take the plunge and now I'm looking forward to becoming hopelessly addicted!
Super helpful. Didn't think I could really get into the game after getting so used to World's gameplay, but it's surprisingly similar. I guess I never gave it the time of day
As a greatsword main from monster hunter world can confirm. You need to know the monsters movement by heart to be effective, you are so slow and your attacks are slow. It's a strong weapon and I loved nailing meaty hits though.
A very helpful video, thank you. I've tried various MH games over the years and I'm determined to actually get properly into this one. This video helped me understand a fair few things I wasn't sure about
i'll always recommend the hammer to anyone unless they really need to chop off a tail. being able to hold your charged attack with a hammer while running around to get a good window for attack is very op. also being able to cancel out of your charged attack or follow through into an evade makes hammer mobility feel pretty good.
PSA: Assume for most multiplayer quests that your team is aiming to kill, not capture, unless the party specifies to capture for this quest. Some rare items for monsters are either greatly reduced in percentage of dropping or flat-out unavailable when capturing; Other rare items are the reverse for killing. Exceptions would probably be: You’re all in the last life before failing the quest and can guarantee a success by capturing, you’re planning on getting rare drops specifically obtained by capturing, or someone “carted” right before the monster is about to die and won’t be able to come back in time to loot the corpse.
This was extremely helpful for I am a Monster Hunter veteran, but I needed a different appraoch in explaning the series gameplay to some friends looking to start Monster Hunter.
I am new to Monster Hunter... Bought this to support the devs and give a Monster Hunter game a go... Loving it so far! It took me a week to figure out which weapon is my weapon and it's the charge blade! Now, I am figuring out how to upgrade it and unlock the tree system, they all seem to have ???? on them!!!
I like the part when you said about the role of a Hammer and Long Sword wielder during quests. My co-workers and I were doing this way back since the PSP days...it was also the time I had to learn another weapon aside from being a Hammer-main.
Old gamer here but new to Monster Hunter universe... tried before in PSP (Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd) and I never understood the hype with it, so I let Monster Hunter World (for PC) pass by... Now I'm tring to get into Rise. After a couple of hours, I'm still not into it. And after watching some videos, this is the first I think it's most compheensive (and basic... ) for newcomers... going to give Rise another chance!
Thanks for the good content, Pat! I'm not actually planning on playing this game, I could never really get into the first one, but I missed this type of content. 😊
Hi! It's me! The MH veteran since the first game with 15k+ hours across all games. This guide is helpful. Rise is kinda complicated with the mechanics.

you can read the title and know... ah yes. pat did this one. great vid pat!
I also play Who's That Polygon? based on titles.
for some reason I wasn't sure about Monster Hunter Rise but... now I'm actually hyped
I only play single-player games but I’m gonna watch this whole video anyway to hear Pat’s lovely voice
You can definitely play this game single player, monster hunter might not be for everyone, but I’ve been having a big-bang-blast of a time playing (in single player)
Yeah, you can have a great experience playing totally solo. The quests in the Gathering Hub, which in previous titles would be permanently scaled for multiplayer, will now scale down if you take them on by yourself.
same. I didn't like MH at all, but playing this in the background is lovely.
I'm a single player only too!👍
This *can* be a singleplayer game, like most Monster Hunter titles before it. I played all of World and MH4U solo.
Wow this was helpful. Haven’t played since the psp and I was so overwhelmed yesterday. Just going to practice these tips one at a time.
Pat: It's time to finally hit the lizard
TH-cam: ALIENWARE!
thank you I really needed this
-baby
I don't even play Monster Hunter but I love Pat vids.
Honestly this is a great refresher for veterans of the series who've been out of it for a while, thanks for the video!
Yo I’m so brand new to this series and this vid is the BEST and does its purpose so thank y’all for all the hard work.
thanks for including the palico cooking animation like a real king
This was really useful! I was very confused at first because of the walls of text the game gives to explain stuff, and this explained things well, thank you! :)
You are a lifesaver! This was very helpful. Been trying to understand the mechanics of this game but now I'm ready to hunt! 😁
you literally save me haha 3 days playing without knowing it. and finally got to enjoy haha. this 18 mins literally make me slay more than 8 huge monster alone haha
Great video. Just got this for the switch and it throws a lot of stuff at you at the beginning which blew my mind. This video is perfect.
I'm not sacrificing one of my skills for shitty teammates who don't know anything about their environment
Saved this video! Thanks so much for this Pat/Polygon! Picking this game up later this week and will be my first real Monster Hunter game after being unable to really get into Monster Hunter World. After playing the demo and watching countless vids I feel like I’m finally confidently grasping the mechanics
As a newcomer to the series, i very much appreciate the video! Thanks!
The way Patrick says PALAMUTE
Just bought Monster Hunter Rise on Steam. This will be my first time playing any of the Monster Hunter game so this video is perfect for me. :D
I just got this game today because I've been enjoying Monster Hunter Now and I am sooooo bad at it. This video is great :)
me having played 500+ hours of monster hunter watching this guide. Amazing guide btw
Thank you for the multiplayer tips. I didn’t know my attacks affect others. I’ll be more cautious.
More experienced hunters will get the brace deco in their builds when playing multiplayer. It removes the hit stun from other teammates.
I just got this game (first time monster hunter plauer) was not having fun at all until I found this video!!! I am a visual learner. So the in game instructions dont mean anything to me. But this video was my savior. Now I'm addicted and cant stop playing
Why do I smile so much when he says Palamute omg
Lol I'm watching this to get ready for when it comes out in January for the series x gonna be fun
Awesome vid, cheers man
I just bought this with my friend. Thanks a bunch! Can't wait to get into this series!
Great guide, Pat! Thank you especially for the etiquette tips (especially especially about LS tripping)
The title is so aggressive and the video is so calming…
Anyway, turns out I WILL watch an almost 20 minute long tutorial video about a game I will never play and that I don’t know anything about IF Pat is doing the talking.
I'm not a beginner but I'm watching this just to see Pat make more Monster Hunter content.
I put over 1000 hours into mh4 with my 3ds back in the day. I'm so excited to play with the insect glaive and switch axe again. Thanks for the refresher!
Very useful. I’ve just bought it on switch!
whats kinda funny is that when i was a beginner, i loved the switch axe and insect glaive
The little details provided in this video are greatly appreciated, sir!
Thanks for the tutorial. It explains a lot.
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never played any of the Monster Hunter games. I know, I know why haven’t I played them before. Lol
I been playing WOW for years. lol Gonna pick a range weapon to start out with. Playing WoW my main toon was a Hunter. Thanks again! ✌🏻❤️
I feel like we are platonically holding hands this entire video. ❤ Wholesome best friend vibes. This is 10/10
The insect glaive is the weapon I started with. Once you get the hang of it and know when to strike they're pretty easy
I guess I never gave it the time of day
me who has beaten world, 90% of iceborne, and already has done multiple hunts in rise: yea i'll watch this
I’m not a Monster Hunter absolute baby, but I still find these videos interesting and entertaining. Happy hunting to all new players coming with Rise!
Good video, most beginners videos are not for beginners ☹️ I’ll be buying this today and starting my hunt 👍
This video helped me understand a fair few things I wasn't sure about
4:00 actually the best advice i heard today. It is just so true. interest in a topic helps so much improving at it.
i'll always recommend the hammer to anyone unless they really need to chop off a tail. being able to hold your charged attack with a hammer while running around to get a good window for attack is very op. also being able to cancel out of your charged attack or follow through into an evade makes hammer mobility feel pretty good.
I searched for tips because I was trying to beat the multiplayer missions on my own and thought I just did no damage💀💀💀
Me too
I love Pat's smooth relaxing voice
Love that right away, the line "cool lizards" is accompanied by footage of the bird like monkey enemy
That newborn:
"Yes!"
"I qualify!"
Thanks, Polygon. I really needed this.
Hi! It's me! The MH veteran since the first game with 15k+ hours across all games. This guide is helpful. Rise is kinda complicated with the mechanics.
