Marine engines are slightly different than automotive ones. They are wildly ovebuilt. Its expected they will be run for hours at full power.
True, but you don't service your car engine every 100 hours. So clearly meant for rich people with rich hobbies. As a kid I buzzed around in a 17 feet really basic fibreglass boat with a 20 hp Johnson engine. Probably ran for 10 years and never was serviced, and never had issues. Us poor people get by with simpler toys that have longer longevity.
So what you’re saying is to grab a Honda outboard v6 and slap it in my Miata?
@@Forbiddinaan interesting proposition...
The Honda 90hp (and I belive the old 75) are based on the Honda Fit engine.
@Tomazack the service interval on that Johnson was definitely 100hrs...
You seem to find a new topic every day and turn it into an interesting video to learn from. As usual, thank you for being an amazing mechanical teacher.
I love the information in this channels videos. I have no interest in boats but I'm enthralled with Visio racers film about them.
L5 and V10 layouts are the best sounding.
I 100% agree, they have a symphony of a sound to them
Thank you once again, Visio Racer! I ♥️ outboards!
I don't even have a boat but I always want to buy an outboard when I watch one of your videos on them.
I like outboards for many of the same characteristics that I love motorcycle engines for; the design brief calls for high power output yet within a very limited space, and with a reasonably light weight. Reliability is crucial. As someone who has spent a good deal of time aboard boats large and small, I would make unstoppable reliability and durability the #1 priority were I seeking engines for a boat.
That being said, i really don't want an outboard (outboards) for a boat.
I want to put one in a car, and/or a motorcycle! This V10 would be awesome in a compact, lightweight mid-engined sports car.
Then again, a vintage 2-stroke V8 would be a wild engine to build a car around... this is when I start wishing for an unlimited budget and a comprehensive workshop for fabricating things from all materials.
Well, anyway, you've put a smile on my face this morning. I'm such an engine geek. You do wonderful work, keep it up!
Oh, I keep meaning to mention- You probably know about this one. Late in the Second World War, Rolls-Royce designed and built prototypes of one of the most insane engines ever conceived. It was to be an aircraft engine, and it was a 2-Stroke petrol V-12 (!) with sleeve valves called the Crecy. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
I loved the build I saw years ago on TH-cam of the guy who built a drag car out of a two stroke boat v8.
He had a tuned pipe on each cylinder, it looked and sounded wild.
Many thanks for this. I have been fascinated by outboard motors since I was a child. Mercury was always my favourite, they just sounded fabulous.
New ones are super quiet.
It's perfectly proved : rich people don't pollute... they send golden star dust in the air. 😇
My favorite part is the four strokes somehow out-competed the Evinrude two strokes, which actually burned less fuel from smaller engines that had less emissions for similar horsepower output. All with a better holeshot.
@@duckdestroyer2412don't forget to mention the cool oil sleek two stroke engines leave on their wake, if I'm not mistaken that's exactly why they grandfathered the existing ones and banned them in many countries years ago.
I don't know about other countries but in Portugal it reversed some of the environmental degradation of our beaches and no one in his right mind wants to bring them back.
@pmnichols10 the modern ones no longer do that. Like I said, they actually burn cleaner than their competing four stroke competitors. But the old ones, without a doubt, do. Fuel injection is amazing when it comes to power, efficiency, and cleanliness.
@@pmnichols10direct injection got rid of that issue 2 decades ago.

Rich people can have anything they want
I hate boats but love their motors
Prob the only engine producer who doesnt think less cylinders are better *eye roll
Really interesting to learn about this Verado engine family, but I'm way more interested in the V12 than the V10! For smooth operation over long hours, the V10 is hopeless, but V12 has perfect natural balance.
They are in wildly different categories, though. The V12 is a huge beast that you won't be strapping on a smaller performance boat. It also has a two speed transmission and pivots at the lower instead of the transom. That all makes it weigh MUCH more. Besides the balanced nature of a V12 versus a V10 you wouldn't be shopping for both of them for the same boat.
What a beautiful engine, this kind of thing needs to happen in car industry!
Marine engines don't have the same emission (even though 2 strokes have been outlawed in many states because of their emission and noise levels) and fuel consumption standards imposed on them like auto/truck industry. Except for maybe noise requirements. Who knows that may change sometime in the future.
Good stuff, thanks for sharing 👍.
Welcome in 2023, when it became easier to find a good engine into a bloody outboard rather than under a hood.
The industry has been shifting to outboards for a little while now. I wouldn't consider an inboard at all on a new purchase.
Untapped Potential. However, my brother knew. I borrowed his 1984 Chevy Suburban, with a SKYJACKER lift-kit, AND a VOLVO PINTA 350 V8
Good video. Thank you. N.B. The ‘t’ in debut is always silent, even in the South of France, where they typically do not drop the final consonant, unlike the ‘barbarians’ in Paris-and other points North😁! Cheers from NZ🇳🇿.
P.S. I suspect that the new alternator achieves its higher output via the same rare earth metals that are in my newer-brushless-battery powered tools.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one daydreaming about throwing each one of these engines, from the smaller V6 to the big V12, in a car...
Imagine that V12 in a little RX3 😍
I’ve speculated on this too, especially in something like a 1932 Ford. It could be an excellent hot rod engine. Even a land speed car, especially when they’re designed for wide open throttle for long periods.
Lovely outboards !
Mercury is on another level !
All I want to know is can this engine be modified to work in a car
Everything was perfect until you said 40k . My kayak won’t get a mercury 😅😅😂😂😂 - good video
If you think it's a good idea to put a 400hp engine on a kayak you may want to take a look at home made river jet boats, it will blow your mind away and something you may actually be able to afford.
I love your channel and I never miss a vid so I'm not knocking you and just want to clarify the word "however".
You use it constantly in all vids and pronounce it "how-whether"
Yeah, I struggle with that one 🫣 Thanks
Pretty fVck'n impressive!
what I'm trying to figure out is where they got this engine at, they tend to take off the shelf units and build them into marine units, the only 5.7 v10 I'm basically finding is one for the carrera GT.
Great video. Very informative. I do love a good mercury engine. Do you plan on doing a video on inboard mercury engines?
Thanks again :-)
Perfect content.
nice video mate a beast of an engine sounds sweet and i bet very expensive .
Oh yeah!! But if they can afford a $200K + boat im sure they can afford a $40K engine to power it along with the fuel costs.
5.7 litres and 64 degree V angle are very strange numbers for a V10, or at least compared to automotive units.
(i know the carrera GT was 5.7L)
The 64-80 firing pattern isnt too different than the 54-90 pattern of the viper v10. The carrera Gt had a 68-76(?) pattern...i still dont know why porsche bothered with the 4°.
First water V10? What about the Ilmor MV10 series?
this is partially my curiosity, lack of knowledge of outboard engines and probably a dumb question, but is it possible or has anyone found a way to convert/use an outboard engine in a car or other automotive type application?? would be really cool to use any of the Yamaha or Mercury marine engines. especially a older 2-stroke Mercury, or even the yamaha V8's that were based on the 4.4 that Volvo and Noble used.
MISHIMA!!! Sailor who fell from grace devastated me. I'd worked out the ending three quarters of the way through and kept reading hoping for a happier ending while becoming increasingly freaked out realising that the kids were really going to kill him
The movie didn't do it justice
do a video about the om642
One of these engines would absolutely rip on a bass boat.
At 700lbs, it might sink it if you stop.
These are well off people's toys. Its nice to have money. 40k per v10 🤣. And as we can see some have 4 of them. 160k in just motors. Now buy fuel for 4 v10s or other high out put motors. And maintain them. Oh and lets not forget the rest of the boat. These owners are hundred thousandsires and millionaires. Big money. I like the AMG boats with 4 TTV8s 😂 absolutely nuts. I can only imagine costs of operating one of these high output 4 motor boats. I know a few people with "cheap" 35 to 43k 125hp boats. And they complain about fuel and maintenance costs constantly.
Half a million dollar 50 footers with Merc Racing 1350's are 300K for engines, 250K for drives, and yes, they are rich folks toys. But honestly, airplanes are the next step up for big $$$ toys.
In the end the only persons that truly enjoy the boat are your friends and the guy you pay to maintain it.
One of my best jobs was at a beach marina ferrying costumers to their boats in a seven passenger dinghy with a 50hp outboard, so much for the six knot speed limit, I kinda exempted myself from respecting it 😂
There seems to be a somewhat distracting flickering effect on all the added text on the video, at least while using 1080p resolution. Do you by chance produce your videos in 1080i, but upload them in 1080p and up?
I don’t see any
Did you reupload this? It says 3 hrs ago, but I’m sure I saw this like a week ago?
No no, this is the original upload
Great video they need put these engines I car's 😂😂
These V10s deliver more torque across the rev range than the L6's.
Can they bring back the $5,000 2-stroke please...
Hanging onto my old 175 Evinrude crossflow for as long as I can. Paid $1800 for it and it came attached to a free fiberglass hull! 😆
I'm going to get my 17 foot Bayliner out this afternoon. 90 HP Mercury, 16 valve four cylinder. Yamaha builds a better engine.
lol ok.
Little known fact, the best boats and engines are the ones that belong to your friend or the rental company.
@@pmnichols10 Hahah!
Why no mention of the new 500r that released last month?
The video was already narrated and almost fully edited when it came out
@@VisioRacer oh ok. Will you be doing a video on the 500r?
Boat: A hole in the water you throw money into.
I'd love to design engines for them, but I'll never own one.
..and are paid handsomely for that golden dust.
I'm genuinely surprised that outboards never went to a VR configuration with all the space saving implications.
No kidding, especially considering the ability to rev, and make broad torque.
I think you may have answered your own question, isn't the VR configuration slightly wider than a regular V using the same size cylinder?
If so that could constrain the number of engines, in contrast they can grow in any other direction without causing the same problem.
@@pmnichols10no
@@pmnichols10no, the 12 valve 2.8 liter VR6 in a VW is about the same size as an inline 4, but the power isn’t much better (180hp) the 24 valve has better power (220hp) but a larger cylinder head. There are hot spot problems with the VR design as well. But they do save space.

What happened to the alfadan 😂
Yea!!!
X2??
Imagine, if you will, pristine and peaceful nature being destroyed by a noisy compensatory piece of gear!
Yep, just did it today with my 1990 90hp 2 smoke Evinrude V4!!! I love me an old OMC 2 smoke
That water is disgusting, it’s like they’re in a septic tank
WHF? $40K for a stupid outboard donk? OK, I'm going to watch this now and figure out how a fool and their money get together in the first place.
Fantastic engine but 40k..... 😬
has anyone tried to install one into a car ?
Mercury can build you a 9.0 V8 twin turbo and you can install it in a car
Gonna need to run that car in a lake for enough cooling
id rather see a MercuryBusa on 2 wheels 🐱👍🏿

Mercury should build superbikes
Admit it, you love saying however.
Gasoline is way too cheap!

congratulations 🐱👍🏿
The T in ‘debut’ is always silent
I know, English sucks
40k? No wonder they have exotic engines, they’re selling you a car engine for the price of a car. I kind of hate boats, really don’t understand the hype, I just like the engines. But “boat culture” makes me sick.
Mercury engines are powerful but unreliable and behind when it comes to technology, behind by like 20 years
we've had a 90hp merc 4cyl for years and it's never given us much trouble, I didnt know they had a bad wrap
Nah Yamaha is unreliable and expensive merc is cheap and since they are mostly based on domestic units parts and repair can be easily had
You need to see a doctor asap !
But why... v8 balances way better...
Not at all. The more cylinders you add, the smoother the engine gets.
@@EddieFly00 Yeah, but straight sixes are the best balance. V, 8 or close second and twelve, so that's 2 6 cylinders. 10 been the weird odd duck.
@@taomicioli More displacement without turbochargers. They want it naturally aspirated.
@@taomicioli Best I-6/ V12, second cross plane V8, third V10, forth flat plane V8.
This is just straight up incorrect
The sound was a disappointment. Most boring V-10 sound ever👎
